A Riddle From an Elder Dragon

Today, the King sat down and read the Elder Dragon’s riddle. It read:

Last night, I found a tavern. However, I was told by the guard that this tavern could only be entered after I had figured out the password. I was allowed to wait nearby and observe people as they entered. A little while later, a young lady approached the tavern. I believe she was part of an adventuring party. At least that is what I hoped. With her attire, I could only see her as that or prostitute but I did not want to assume. Anyways, I ramble. The tavern door opened and the guard said “6” The lady answered “3” and was allowed to enter. Later, I observe another person walk up to the tavern. The guard opened the door and said “12.” The young man thought for a moment before answering “6!” The guard nodded and let him in. At this point, I was fairly certain of the pattern and approached the door. The guard looked at me and said “4.” I said “2” and had the door slammed in my face. Why was I wrong? What should I have said?
