Chapter 2: Kismet

Eight years had passed, and the world had made significant advancements in creating weapons capable of matching the power of the monsters that threatened humanity's existence.

In this new world, I, Kim Su-Jin, had become the strategist for our base.

As we cautiously made our way through the abandoned and dilapidated city, the sound of our footsteps echoed through the desolate streets. Each member of our team held their weapons tightly, ready to defend against any potential attacks.

"What do we do now team leader? Shall we keep looking for any possible resources?" One of the team members asked.

The captain of our team, Lee Su-hyeok frowned before he looked at me, asking for my opinion.

I lazily spoke and said "It's best to split up for now"

Lee Su-hyeok pondered before agreeing and said "Well then, you all heard it, let's split up into three groups"

I found myself paired with two fighters from our team, Sun Beom seok and Park Do. Together, we ventured into the nearest building, a bookstore, in search of anything that could aid us. As we rummaged through the shelves, I stumbled upon a fallen bookshelf. Curiosity piqued, I noticed a peculiar book that stood out from the rest. It had a dark and worn exterior, but intricate golden lines adorned its cover. Intrigued, I picked it up, blowing away the dust to reveal the title: [Kismet].

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

The title struck me as peculiar, as most would have simply used the word "Fate" instead of "Kismet." I stared at the book intently, contemplating its significance. Just as I was about to open it, Park Do called out to me, breaking my concentration. I decided to put the book in my bag and join my teammates.

....

Returning back to the base we did not encounter any monsters fortunately and I and Lee Su-hyeok reported to the leader of the base.

Afterwards we went back to the hallway. As we walked I took out the book and stared at it while walking.

"You really are a bookworm, even amidst the chaos you still have the time to pick up a book" Lee Su-hyeok chuckled.

"Hm" I just hummed in reply.

Arriving at my office, I settled into my comfortable chair and placed the book on the table. Stretching my limbs and taking a deep breath, I prepared myself for what lay within its pages. Opening it, I began to read the lines inscribed on the first page, immersing myself in deep contemplation.

The words on the page spoke of how one's demise is not solely determined by their own actions but rather by "Fate" itself. It emphasized that even as the reader, we are bound by the threads controlled by "Fate," regardless of any attempts to alter our destiny. The passage warned of the consequences that accompany every decision made, urging careful consideration to avoid future regret.

I couldn't help but murmur in confusion and fascination, finding the book's contents both intriguing and unsettling. As I prepared to turn to the next page, a sudden unease washed over me, causing my hand to freeze in mid-air. My heart raced, and perspiration formed on my brow. I couldn't understand why I was reacting this way. Logically, it was just a book, but my instincts warned me of the potential life-altering consequences that awaited me.

A slight snort escaped my lips as I considered the notion. My life was already in ruins to begin with, so what harm could this book possibly bring?

Memories from eight years ago flooded my mind, causing an involuntary frown to appear on my face. With a deep breath, I turned to the next page.

What I read next shook me to the core, filling me with horror.

「In the world , year 2036, a hydro dragon will appear and massacre countless of lives from the surface of the world.

The names of the people who'll perish are: Ethan Mccarthy, Ye Yexio, Nakamura Yuki, Tanaka Sasaki, Lily Anderson-...」

Then, I've read three names that made my world shattered.

「...Sung Il-yeong, Ahn Shin, Park Jum...」

「These people are the ones destined to die by the hands of the hydro dragon designed by "Fate"」

And all of what was written here, had already, and actually happened, exactly eight years ago.
