The Mission Ch.1
Straining his eyes the young man looking down off the edge of a cliff behind a small rock formation spotted his target.
It took him three days to reach his current location and in his excitement he quickly got up to move.
From a faraway distance the lips of an old man creased into a smirk making a face that could put any crying babies into silence for years for he too spotted his target.
Just as the young man was about to move forward a chill went down his spine urging him to get back down. The sound of a gunshot echoed throughout the canyon alerting the young man of the cause of the sudden chill. Looking behind he could only stare at the small hole in the rock behind him where just seconds ago his head was.
Knowing that his position has been revealed he rocketed from where he was hiding knowing that hesitation would only kill him. Cursing his stupidity the young man skidded down the side of the cliff hoping that he would not join his five other comrades who’ve all met their end from The Reaper, the notorious sniper who has never failed an assignment, who was also trying to stop them from obtaining the package by any means.
“Damn it, Damn it, **** that crazy ****nutty old fart **** decrepit old ****** and the demon that spawn that piece of **** to ****** and ***-!” A string of curses flew from Joshua’s mouth as he raced down the side of the cliff.
Despite all his cursing inside Joshua’s head was a cool, collective mind looking out for any rock formations or other possible covers while calculating the potential trajectories of the incoming bullets. Despite all his efforts the bullets came dangerously close, some barely missing within inches in front of his face.
Hiding behind the last rock formation cover closest to his target Joshua slowly caught his breath. The cover giving him precious time to recover and evaluate his current situation.
“About 15 no 17 meters…” Sighing to himself, Joshua saw that the package was in a steel suit case strung to a protruding tree branch from the side of the cliff and directly below was a steep rock wall with no angles 50m straight down to the roaring canyon river.
As Joshua pondered for any possible solutions only one stuck out making him sigh once again. Reaching into the pocket in his vest he took out three throwing knives. Made out of carbon steel the knives were light and strong enough for the job but could he really hit the- no he has to hit the target or else The Reaper would claim his life.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
“Well here we go” said Joshua as he took aim while judging the strength needed and while praying to some unknown god he threw. The first one missed by a few inches causing another salvo of curses to spew from Joshua’s mouth. Calming himself again he recalled the strength needed and adjusted his aim. With a deep breath he threw. The dagger sliced through the air but only nicked the edge of the rope.
Thanks to all his discipline training he kept his calm (while cursing profusely) and replayed the sequence of hitting the rope dead center over and over keeping note of the wind, the trajectory and to keep the strength consistent. With one last mental preparation Joshua slowly raised his arm and with deep focus threw his last remaining dagger. The dagger flew true and embedded itself right into the middle of the rope.
Smiling in success Joshua roared “Yes! Take that you stupid ***** **** rope!”
However the smile soon left Joshua’s face as he realized the dagger was stuck straight in the middle of the rope instead of at an angle preventing the rope from being sliced right then and there.
“F********** Youuuuu!!!” Joshua shouted as he sobbed inside.
In his anger the usually rational Joshua grabbed the largest rock he could find and hurled it at the rope while giving off a primal roar. The rock didn’t reach the rope but it did hit the steel case with tremendous force causing the already fraying rope connected to the case to snap.
Snapping out of his anger and disbelief over his luck he quickly dived out of his rock cover into the roaring rivers after the steel case. Desperately he sought for the case in the icy dark waters while trying to prevent the water from overpowering him and dragging him down under. Finally he managed to grab the edges of the case with his numb fingers only to have darkness creeping over him as he blacked out.
From a faraway distance The Reaper smiled and if anyone were around to see it they would claim to having seen the devil itself.
