Madam and Sofia

Throughout my arduous journey of buying and selling, establishing my own trade routes, and becoming a member of a reputable merchant guild, I managed to bring some relief to my impoverished family. Though they still toil in the Lord's fields, they no longer need to endure the constant anguish of uncertain meals. Witnessing my mother and two younger brothers grow healthier and stronger compared to years past fills my heart with joy. What brings me even greater happiness is their newfound ability to harbor dreams and aspirations of their own.

My sixteen-year-old brother aspires to become a knight, while my fourteen-year-old brother dreams of following in my footsteps as a merchant. I have made a pact with my brothers, demanding that they promise to protect our beloved mother. In return, I pledge to assist them wholeheartedly in achieving their endeavor.

Another six months had passed since Sofia's birthday. Arriving at the bustling city of Goldkorb, I carefully parked my carriage within the confines of the merchant guild. With a sense of anticipation, I made my way directly to Dragon's Paw, the renowned tavern. The day was still in its afternoon phase, just before nightfall, and I felt inclined to indulge in my beloved drink, the Morning Dew Ale.

As I pushed open the heavy door to the tavern, a lively scene greeted my eyes. Numerous patrons were engaged in animated conversations, relishing their meals in the company of friends and companions. Everything seemed to be proceeding as usual, save for one absence that caught my attention—Master was nowhere to be seen.

"Greetings, Sir Takahiko. It has been half a year since your last visit. I trust you are in good health?" the familiar voice belonged to Madam, Master's wife. I returned the greeting with a courteous bow.

"Greetings, Madam. By the grace of the gods, I have remained in good health thus far. And how are you and your esteemed family? I notice the absence of Master."

Madam responded with a slight sigh, "My husband departed for the Tavern Guild earlier today. There appears to be an important matter that requires his attention, and I fear he may not return until late in the night."

"Indeed, as long as Master is in good health, I find solace in that."

Madam suddenly recollected her oversight and exclaimed, "Oh, forgive my manners. What would you like to indulge in today, Takahiko? Shall I prepare your customary Knight's Table Stew?"

I kindly responded, "It is still early, so I shall savor a glass of Morning Dew ale for now. I will place my order for the stew closer to dinnertime."

Understanding my preference, Madam nodded and assured, "Very well, please take a moment to relax until dinner. Your stew will be served at the appointed time."

With a gracious smile, she swiftly made her way to the barrels in the corner, returning with a splendid tankard brimming with the refreshing Morning Dew ale, "Here you are, one fine Morning Dew ale," she announced with a touch of pride.

I expressed my gratitude, saying, "Thank you kindly, Madam."

"And what of Sofia? How is she?" I inquired with interest.

Madam's face lit up with a smile as she replied, "Ah, Sofia is as vibrant as ever. Lately, she has taken a keen interest in sharing tales and stories with her friends. I believe your thoughtful gift from last time has greatly influenced her newfound passion."

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Hearing this, a sense fulfillment warmed my heart, "Is that so? I am truly delighted to know that the gift has found its purpose and brings her joy."

"Since my husband is not available at the moment, would you like to spend some time with Sofia? She's in the kitchen with nothing to do but observe the workers. I am sure she will be delighted to see you," she kindly offered.

"Certainly, I would love to," I replied with enthusiasm.

"Sofia, could you come here for a moment? Takahiko is here," Madam called out.

"Really? I'm coming right away, Mother!" Sofia's cheerful voice resonated from the kitchen, and not long after, the familiar sight of the lovely little girl I had met six months ago appeared before me. Her bright blue eyes shone with innocence, and her dark hair had grown longer since our last meeting. She was dressed in the typical attire for girls her age, wearing a skirt and a bandana in her hair. Madam then left us alone. Sofia took a seat in front of me, just behind the bar.

"Good afternoon, Sir Takahiko. It brings me joy to see you in good health," she greeted me with a genuine smile.

"Hi Sofia. Please don't call me 'Sir,' We are not strangers anymore, so I would be happy if you simply called me by my name."

"Is that okay? Well, if you insist, then I will call you Takahiko from now on."

"Please do. So, what have you been up to these days?"

"I've been observing how to prepare and cook the food served in this tavern. Father said as the only daughter of a tavern master, I must learn how to serve many guests at the same time. It's really challenging!"

"I understand. I have worked in this tavern in the past, so I can empathize with the difficulties you face."

"Really?! Please teach me how to do it."

I enjoyed talking with Sofia. It's something I only shared with few people, but besides my two brothers, I once had a younger sister who tragically passed away due to starvation when she was just 2 years old. If she were still alive today, she would be the same age as Sofia. It's a passing thought that crosses my mind, imagining how they could have been good friends, playing and growing up together.

We talked for a long time until dinnertime, and perhaps we would not have stopped if Madam hadn't interrupted us by bringing me the Knight's Table Stew. Sofia returned to the kitchen with a satisfied expression, and Madam smiled, pleased to see her happy.

"That child is truly delighted talking with you. Perhaps it's because she's an only child and longs for a sibling," Madam explained.

"Won't you and Master give her a young sibling?" I teased Madam.

She laughed and rejected the idea. "It's not that we don't want to, but it's difficult with my age and physical condition. When we were younger, we were too busy establishing this tavern, you see."

I recalled that Master Maximus is currently 49 years old, and his wife should be 38. It's understandable.

"And as an experienced old couple, we humbly offer a suggestion: raising a child is an arduous task that demands a considerable amount of resources. While it is not impossible to do so without abundant wealth, it undoubtedly eases the burden if one can prepare their financial means in advance. Fortunately, my husband and I comprehended this truth before welcoming Sofia into our lives," Madam shared, imparting her wisdom.

As we continued our conversation, I relished every flavorful bite of the Knight's Table Stew, savoring the warmth it brought to my soul. Madam and I shared anecdotes from our past, exchanging tales of triumphs and hardships that had shaped our respective journeys.

Once the meal concluded, I expressed my heartfelt gratitude to Madam for her warm hospitality and the delightful conversation. As I paid for the meal with the drinks and prepared to take my leave, I offered a sincere promise to return and visit again, to which Madam warmly welcomed. I ask madam to say my greeting to the Master as well.

I stepped back out into the bustling city of Goldkorb. The streets were illuminated by the soft glow of lanterns, casting dancing shadows upon the cobblestones. It was a city filled with life, magic, and countless untold stories. As I made my way through the enchanting alleys, my thoughts turned back to Sofia, the delightful young girl who had filled my evening with joy. Perhaps I think of her as a substitute for my passed young sister as I mentioned before.
