Chapter 27: Black Sheep

Chapter 27: Black Sheep

Isaac didn’t expect to see someone here at this time of night. At first, he thought it was Bram, but upon closer inspect, he realized that wasn’t the case. It was nearly pitch black outside with no lights in the immediate area. The only thing that was lighting up the way were the lights attached to the overhead of the balcony area.

The person in question had blue eyes and blonde hair with the sides of his head tapered off while the remaining was standing up as if he had applied a gel to it in sort of a faux hawk fashion. He was wearing two green bands with yellow lines embedded into them and appeared to cover his upper arms. He also wore a light green cloak.

“Oh, I’m sorry, was I intruding?” He asked before realizing why this person looked so familiar it was because he was the one person standing in the portraits spread throughout the castle walls.

“Huh? Oh no, I was just night gazing. You’re free to join me if you’d like.” The person responded in a casual tone. He was leaning against the railings and simply staring into the luminous moon.

Isaac nodded and then leaned against the railings as well, staring at the beautiful celestial body roaming about in the sky. Even in a place like this, there was still the beauty that the world had to offer.

“Is it all right if I ask you something?”

“Go ahead.”

“How come you’re left out of the pictures downstairs? You know the one your family took together. You are Zain, right?”

Zain shifted his gaze towards the blonde boy for a moment before returning his blue eyes towards the giant orb in the sky. “That’s me. The reason I’m not in the photos is simple. They were taken long before I was discovered.”

“Before you were discovered? What does that mean exactly?” Isaac looked as if he was about to have a huge brain fart as he didn’t know what he was implying.

“To make a long story short, my father had me by another woman and didn’t know of my existence until shortly. That is why I’m not in any of those photos you see.”

“Oh, that’s too bad. But, it’s a good thing that your father found you. I bet you were surprised to learn that he’s a King.”

“Hah, actually I was. I never knew that I had royal blood in me. It was upon that discovery that I wanted to better myself.” Zain regained his posture as he then moved to lean against the wall, staring at Isaac with a curious expression.

“Is something up?”

“I don’t see humans here often. You guys look different in person.”

“Oh? In what way?”

“You look a lot weaker than I imagine.” He chuckled softly. “Not to be rude, I just thought humans would be bigger.”

“Hey, we come in all different shapes and sizes. I just happen to be on the small side.”

“Well, you seem honest enough. What was your name? You knew of mine, but I know nothing about you.”

“I’m Isaac. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Prince Zain!”

“No need to call me a prince. I rather dislike that title as I never had it for a majority of my life.”

“I understand, Zain.”

“So, what brings you here? Can’t sleep?”

“I’m a bit homesick if I’m being honest…”

“Really? You haven’t been gone for long. Perhaps... There’s someone you’re missing?”

“Yeah, I’m missing my family. Being here and seeing a friend nearly die. It’s shown me we could really die at any moment.”

“That is true. I had that nagging feeling over my head for quite some time. It does get easier to deal with once you get stronger.”

“I don’t think anything could defeat you guys. You all seem so powerful… and kinda scary if I’m being honest.”

“Most of our power comes from our venom. But, if you find a way to deal with that there isn’t much to us. If you ask me, humans can truly be a frightening race also.”

“You mean you’re afraid of us?”

“No, what I’m saying is that one shouldn’t underestimate your kind. Even though most of you lack magical prowess you still somehow are able to survive and build technology as advanced as yours. If it weren’t for the Elves this world would be yours to control.”

“Wow, that’s good to know… I guess it’s important to put yourself in the shoes of others.”

“How else are we to understand one another? Anyways, I’m going to head off to bed. You should get some rest. You guys still need those spheres after all.”

“Yeah. Have a good night, Zain. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Zain nodded on his way out, leaving Isaac alone to gaze at the moon for a little while longer.
