Chapter 8 the duel - edit

"To mass produce Worlds and Planes is easy but Life and Death needed some inspiration.

Making the same World or Plane is useless, they need to make them different from each others, unique.

Usually it begins with a , like what if pigs flew and eagles lived under the earth?

After a good comes then They add the rules to make the World/Plane work properly, then they create the environement and the inhabitants.

After the inhabitants settle, an Ego is made so it can keep them under control.

When Ego has observed his inhabitants enought and they start to become a menace to their own selves Ego picks the images or ideas that the inhabitants venerate and turns them into a God or Gods."

"While I write I would sure love me some bacon on the fly."

The hunters are the village protectors and because of the heavy weight of their weapons there aren't many villagers that can become hunters. Usually there are twenty to thirty hunters present at the same time in the village, age and death change those numbers easily. The hunters in the past fought as a single big group, they use the range advantage from the bows to soften or eliminate the threaths. If needed they used Hardwood shields and spears and engaged in melee.

A big change happened when Sidon became the First Hunter. There were twenty-three hunters under his command, he divided them in two ten-men groups with a senior hunter at the head and him, the First Hunter would operate alone.

The new formation was inspired to the changes brought by their new head scout. When the retired army scout Todd joined the village he easly became head scout and used his experience to better the scouts operations. Three mans per team so they would skulk easily while covering more ground but still able to help each others. Forty-five scouts could explore the woods surrounding the village, place traps and bring food to the village daily while still have some scouts in reserve resting.

Sidon would take a hunter party inside the forest to train while the other eleven men would stay to protect the village. Usually the training was hunting some dangerous beast or some bandits that the scouts found. When their prey were subjugated he would then spar with them, eleven versus one, so he could see how far their cooperations and their tactics would bring them when they faced an impossibly strong single enemy. The twelve men would then come back to the village to their expecting friends and family members, eleven banged up men and a hale First Hunter, when they came to rest inside the hunters longhouse Sidon would go man to man and explain to them what they did well and where things started to go wrong, he then would send the eleven of them to Todd for further guidance.

Sidon was a rough person, not many villagers liked his manners. Probably no one at all but, his strenght and work ethics are exceptional. The entire village can only respect their First Hunter, some wholeheartedlyand some begrudgingly, their best first hunter from the founding of the village. After Sidon became the First Hunter no hunter died from their expeditions and the most dangerous fights were done by him alone.

That's why young Alfonse admired him so much that he joined the hunters, trained harder than any other member and his hero himself told him he had the capabilities to become the next First Hunter! Only if he could keep the good results without it going to his head and then dying from a cocky action.

----

Alfonse the now senior hunter got called to the First Hunter house and he was estatic as always. He was gonna speak his hero again and not on the job!

Sidon welcomed him with a smile,"hey Al, the one in Fia's arm is my son. When he grows up he will become the First Hunter and I want you to train him."

Alfonse was surprised, "w-what? I tought I would become the next Frist Hunter!" He grimaced, Alfonse sounded more sour than he meant to.

Sidon's eyes took a predatory glint, "eh, do you think I'm immortal and ageless? I'm getting old too, twenty of you still can't even make me sweat but in ten or twenty snows... Eh who knows? You are only getting older too, if you aren't careful new blood could steal your dream. You are doing your best, I know, I see you." He shrugged, "I'm still stronger so do better and you might have a chance."

Alfonse shivered, that was the man he had to overcome and it filled him of joy to know his hero tought so high of him! "I-I'll train harder!" Alfonse fled to train some more.

---

Nine snows later Sidon and his son, his Little Wolf, exited from the village with only two normal wooden spears and their clothes on. When they came back Sidon was carring no spears and his sleeping son on his shoulder, to every hunter surprise he had a bruise on his other shoulder! Sidon visited Alfonse the same night.

The First Hunter brought him out of the hunter longhouse and found a spot where they could have a private conversation, "I made a promise with my wife, if my son could hit me even once it would be the moment to start his training to become a hunter. A promise is a promise, so in a while YOU will have to train him, from today onward you are the hunters trainer."

Alfonse now older, took pride to be the second strongest person in the village. He knows how strong Sidon is, he knows how old the First Hunter has become and while his prime is probably gone by. Alfonse is the strongest he has ever been, he has ever felt but, he just can't see any way to beat the older hunter. This did not sour his mood, well it did at first but growing is not only physical. Speaking with the old villagers he understood many things that eluded him in the past. Alfonse could still dream to become First Hunter, he will never stop to train and do his best but his duty as a villager was more important. Defending the village is his job but, to do his best to be useful to the entire village is what he should do as a villager. So is teaching new hunters, make the new blood stronger with his knowledge and experience. "Y-yes sir! I will obey! Your child will become the strongest hunter!" Alfonse might never become the First Hunter but no one will take that spot unless he has his say so!

Sidon smiled ruefully,"he's already the strongerst hunter, just not the best hunter, not yet. He hits harder than the bear I killed some snows ago... If I didn't assorb the impact jumping back and our wooden spears did not break... "The First Hunter eyes looked distant, he touched his bruise, "My shoulder... Eh... You need to be careful Al, don't think of him as a child or just another trainee hunter. He's like a bear cub with the strenght of a moss bear, it might seem that he can't get hurt and he looks inhexaustible but... When he moves and takes hits he does get tired, he just doesen't show it. His stamina is not infinite, when he can't keep up and hits his limit he just faints. A little advice, use your experience, keep moving, when he exposes himself hit him hard. Dodge everything he throws at you, I'm serious, never ever block because your life is on the line. Hit him until he drops, he will be back on his feet in a couple hours..." Sidon now had a big smile and a predatory look on his eyes.

"A-are you sure sir?" Asked the confused newly appointed hunters trainer. Sidon just smiled and left.

Alfonse started training the future hunters, he found that he was actually a good teacher. There were older hunters, those past their prime, that could not venture outside the walls or could not stand on top of the same for long. Usually they were the teachers and they did a good job but to have a senior hunter, a squad leader take his time to teach the young ones? Those young future hunters were enthusiastic to prove themselves, they trained harder, fought harder and stood with their chest out. It was not always like that but he stole the phrase that his mentor always said after he trained them: " If you want to become the First Hunter. fight me, beat me and I will nominate you First Hunter right now!"

---

After the heat a new kid joined, one with a red mane, white skin so even and so white to appear fake and two red eyes with a gold ring that shone like the moonlight. Alfonse started with the bases and after the lesson he said the worlds he was used to say, "if you want to become a hunter early, fight me, beat me and I will make you a hunter right now! Who wants to challenge me?"

Alfonse stood calmly, arms folded, a wooden spear planted on the ground near him. An excited Little Wolf stepped up, "I wanna challenge you and become a hunter!" Alfonse was surprised. Sidon told him that his son would fight him and prepared him for the future duel but, he didn't think it would happen after the first training section. Alfonse is a man of his word and he accepted the challenge.

The fight started with a thrust from Little Wolf and he almost caught Alfonse by surprise, it was fast, sharp and vicious! But he dodged, the thrust turned into a sweep and Alfonse had to catch it with his spear, the hit was heavy! The instructor had to jump backward to lessen the impact, after the initial surprise Alfonse fell into the rhytm, dodge and hit, hit and dodge until the child collapsed to the ground. It was harder and easier than the hunter thought, the child had power and speed to his side but Alfonse had experience. He had to be careful and his normal wooden spear broke, he had to fight with little more than half a spear lenght.

---

From that day forward each day was the same for Alfonse, train the kids then fight for your life with the child of your hero. Then something happened, the snow was coming and the little monster started to change, he was less hasty, left himself less exposed to counter attacks, after each fight he was thinking more and acting less on istinct, it made the first fights easier for Alfonse because Little Wolf was trying something new and he was bad at it but his improvement was eerily fast.

---

Then a rainy day came, Little Wolf challenged Alfonse as usual. That day the boy was unusual, muted, he did his forms as usual and partecipated in the formation but his face was as cloudy and dark as the sky. The experienced scout was ready for the young man rush but, Little Wolf didn't rush to get the first hit, he just walked toward the instructor, slowly, the weapon secure in his hands but in a relaxed pose, his first move unknown. His eyes shone with a strange intensity and it unnerved Alfonse, every step made the child bigger in his eyes. It felt like when he faced a crazed moss wolf with his team, only this time the hunter was alone, hunter no more, prey. Alfonse lost his cool for a second and hastily swept his spear to give himself some room, Little Wolf expression did not change, he took another step towards the man and the swinging spear, another step and he disappeared! No, he pushed on the ground hard with his foot and slid under the spear and behind the hunter! Alfonse noticed the trick, he could not turn fast enough, so he tok a step forward and surned with a slow sweep. As the older man turned he was met with a sweep, Little Wolf did not use the normal spear grip, but took the spear from the butt increasing the range of his sweep! He hastly jumped backward to try assorb and minimize the impact but... It didn't happen, a light touch to his spear let him know of the child's feint but, it wasn't all... The little monster took a step forward, put his palm on the butt of the spear and turned his sweep into a lunge. In the air Alfonse could do nothing to stop the spear, he desperately tried to deflect and he got hit in the shoulder, the blunted stick that they used as a spear was made from normal wood and it couldn't too hit hard or it would break. The wooden sper hit his shoulder and splintered. The hunter's instructor found himself spinning in the air, he tried land safely but he found himself on the ground with a throbbing shoulder and a broken stick pointed at his nose.

"Do you give up unfair Alfonse?"

Said with a triumfant tone the new hunter.

Alfonse was mortified,"yes, I give up... You are a hunter now." The crestfallen man then whispered to himself, "I'm so sorry sir, I failed you."

It was so low that no one should have been able to hear it but Little Wolf tilted his head and looked in askance to the downed man, then he just shrugged and left.

Little Wolf was really happy, "Mother Fianna was right, when you break the flow of people they turn dumb and you can destroy them easily!" Alfonse heard him, the bruised hunter wanted the day to end so he could to to his cubbyhole and cry injustice.
