Chapter 5: Forgotten Lessons and Preparation

Chapter 5: Forgotten Lessons and Preparation

So this is a filler chapter for the week until the tournament. The tournament has been almost completely planned out. It will be quite long, one of my longest so please put up with this meager chapter. Thank You. *Bows*

Perseus had logged back in to the base to be greeted with a snoring Dan.

“Oi, Dan wake up. It’s time for training.”

“Huh, yeah, I’m up, I’m up”

*Zzzzz*

*Thack*

“I said get up.”

“Yeah Perseus, sorry”

“It’s alright why are you so tired, did your Master make you do longer training last night?”

“Nah, he’s away on a mission, so I am training longer solo to make up for it.”

“Really, mines gone as well.”

“Trouble must be coming for two order leaders to be out on missions. Either that or they are both out lazing around.”

“Probably the second one but you never know, anyway want train together after practice. I figure without our Masters here we should still spar against strong people.”

“Sounds good to me, lets meet up at the mess hall after practice.”

“Yeah, but you better get changed first or Instructor Grant will have our asses for being late.”

“Oh yeah”

In the end Perseus and Dan were five minutes late and got ten extra punishment laps. After their laps they joined the rest of the squires in horse riding. They rode for three hours before moving on to weapon training. Perseus picked up his axe and began hacking and slashing the scarecrow. He continued, for an hour practicing every combination of slashing and hacking he had, when on a whim he picked up the Gada in his left arm and began using both weapons in combination. Perseus was surprised at how well the mace complimented the axe. He imagined an opponent standing before him in full battle armor carrying a broadsword. Perseus slashed with the axe the man blocked it with sword. Perseus then retracted his axe and brought the mace up with his left in an uppercut. The force of the hit knocked away the broadsword. The man left himself open to attack from Perseus’s axe. The man however narrowly dodged. Perseus and the sparring opponent he had envisioned continued fighting for an hour during which Perseus found ways of using his weapons he couldn’t have thought possible had it not been for using them together. At the end of the hour however Perseus fell to the ground panting and clutching his arms. He couldn’t lift them up anymore.

As soon as he fell the instructor walked over and examined Perseus for a moment.

“Dan, could you please take this incompetent buffoon to the infirmary. He broke his wrists and sprained his arms. Alright the rest of you lot we are moving on to the sparring rings.”

‘How did I break them without noticing?’

“You really broke them, huh?”

“Sorry for the trouble Dan.”

“No, it is alright. Look we are here.”

The infirmary was a Church, the only difference was that there was that it had fewer priests.

“Hello there what can I help you with.”

“My friend here broke his wrists and sprained his arms.”

“How did you manage that was it the weights?”

“No I can carry them easily it was because I used my axe and Gada at the same time, for an hour.”

“Why in Freya’s name did you do that they’re not meant to be used in one hand especially not for an hour and most definitely not while wearing weights. Oh Freya what is this world coming to, a place where young people destroy themselves.”

“Yea umm can you just heal him we have to get back to training?”

“Yes fine but next time don’t do that unless you take of the weights. If you keep breaking your wrists the no matter how much healing you receive they will shatter beyond repair.”

He paused and after Perseus’s nod continued.

“If you understand Healing Hand.”

A warm light entered Perseus’s arms and they were healed.

“Thank you, sir Priest.”

“Don’t mention it and remember what I said.”

“Yes sir”

After thanking the priest Perseus and Dan headed to the sparring rings. Upon reaching the sparring rings Perseus and Dan walked over to the instructor.

“Instructor we are back.”

“You think I can’t see that, get to training Dan. Perseus I want to have a word with you.”

Dan feeling sympathetic gave him a look saying good luck. Perseus mentally thanking Dan sighed steeling himself for what was to come.

“What do you think you were doing breaking your wrists like that, did your Masenfu teach you nothing?”

“The thing is, sir, that he didn’t teach me any techniques for using two weapons at once. I just picked the Gada up on a whim and tried using it with my axe.”

The instructor grew silent for a few moments thinking. The instructor finally spoke again.

“Did he teach you anything past the Killing Spirit Control?”

“No”

Once again he grew quiet.

“Ugh that idiot, when he gets back I am going to….”

The instructor started grumbling to himself.

“Uh sir what is wrong?”

“That idiot didn’t teach you any of the other techniques.”

“Huh, what?”

“Never mind come to the idiot’s room after training, now get sparring.”

Perseus was confused now, what other techniques, was his Masenfu so idiotic that he would forget such things. Upon thinking of the question Perseus sighed and went off to spar.

After the sparring, Perseus made his way to the mess hall with Dan. After finishing the meal he told Dan that he would have to postpone the sparring for a while. Dan didn’t mind as he said he had some secret training to do. So Perseus walked to Aglaron’s room. Upon entering Perseus couldn’t see the instructor in the darkness around him.

‘Why do I feel like this is has happened before.’

While Perseus was thinking this over he heard the sound of wind cutting and jumped to the side narrowly avoiding a blade stuck in the ground.

“Why the bloody hell does everyone do that to me?”

“You still need work”

“Don’t give me that you could have cut me in half.”

“Nonsense you are my disciple’s disciple it is not possible for such a weak attack kill you.”

‘Where have I heard that before?’

“Wait don’t praise yourself as an excu-”

“WHAT?”

“Nothing, Masenfu.”

At Perseus accusation the instructor released his Killing Spirit while it was slightly weaker than Aglaron’s; it was still in a world Perseus could not comprehend.

“Good, now the reason I called you here. Your idiotic Masenfu forgot to teach you two types of techniques. The first you have to gain on your own after watching and from experience. The second type of techniques are the sub techniques of Killing Spirit.”

“Cool, what is the first type.”

“Patience I was getting there. The first type is about using multiple weapons in combat. You attempted on doing so by yourself, but broke your wrists in the process, because you weren’t shown the proper way. To use two weapons at once first you must first practice with two lighter long swords. Then work your way up in weight. Understand?”

“Yes, I will start practicing using those in weapon training.”

“Good, now the sub skills of Killing Spirit have to be shown to you first. The first is a breathing technique. This technique is used to strengthen the lungs so that they may contract and expand more and easier thus allowing you to gather more oxygen in your lungs and increase your stamina. This is done by visualizing your Killing Spirit enter your lungs and help them contract and expand. The second technique is on for increasing the strength of bones. Imagine your Killing Spirit entering and coating your bones giving them support, this technique will help you use weapons in a single hand. The third technique is one for strengthening your muscles. It is similar to the technique for the lungs you imagine your Killing Spirit enter your muscles and help it to expand and contract. This will increase your strength and speed. The fourth technique is used to harden your skin so that you can take more damage. You have to imagine your Killing Spirit forming an extremely thin yet very dense layer around your body. This increases your overall defense. The fifth technique is very similar to the fourth technique in which you coat your weapon with Killing Spirit. This increases the damage and speed of your weapon. The last technique is letting your Killing Spirit burst through your weapon or body in the form of energy. Now you try.”

After a half hour of trying Perseus had received a notice.

“Sir I learned them.”

“Good, just practice these here and nowhere else. Here is the key don’t tell the idiot I gave it to you. Just tell him he did he is so stupid he will just believe you.”

‘My Masenfu can’t be that stupid, can he?’

“Yes Masenfu”

With that Instructor Grant left Perseus to himself to practice. At his current mana level Perseus could only maintain the skills at the same time for 5 seconds. So he practiced each one separately, while at the same time using the two long swords as the instructor suggested. After 6 six hours of continuous practice he had managed to increase his percentage to beginner 7 (78%) and generated a new skill.

Dual Wield

Allows you to use two weapons at the same time with greater efficiency

Increases speed of attack by 10%

After checking his new skill Perseus went back to his room and fell asleep soundly.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perseus woke up anxious and excited, today was the day the tournament started. He was prepared mentally and physically but still felt anxious.

After Instructor Grant had taught him the techniques Perseus had spent the rest of the days before the tournament practicing using two swords at the same time and using his new Killing Spirit techniques. He also practiced his blacksmithing at night before sleeping. The result was that he had leveled his Dual Wield skill to beginner level 5, Weapon Mastery to Beginner 9, Killing Spirit Control to Beginner 9 and Blacksmithing to Beginner 7. Perseus had also generated a new skill after repeatedly using both hands when practicing his weapons.

New Skill: Ambidextrous

You are proficient with using both hands.

Increases off-hand accuracy, speed and strength by 10%

He had leveled this skill up to Beginner 5 at the same time as Dual Wield. The two skills leveled together and gained experience at the same time as well.

Stifling a yawn Perseus got out of bed and after preforming his morning stretches walked over to Dan’s bed to wake him up, but he wasn’t there.

‘Wonder where he is.’

“Hey Perseus”

Dan entered the room looking sweaty yet still energetic.

“Hey, went out for a morning jog?”

“Yeah, I couldn’t sleep so I just went out to run.”

“I know how you feel.”

“Do you have any idea what the tournament what the tournament will be like?”

“No, I have never been in one, you?

“Yeah in the real world once I was in the spelling bee.”

“I don’t think that qualifies as tournament.”

“No, it does.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

While Perseus and Dan continued arguing about whether a spelling bee counts they had changed and made their way to the sparring grounds.

“I am telling you a spelling bee is a tournament.”

“And I am telling you it is not, it is a competition.”

“Same difference”

“No its no- wait what?”

“Quiet down you maggots and Dan a spelling bee is not a tournament.”

‘How would you know you’re an npc, wait how did he know what a spelling bee is? The damn AI must be trolling me, again’

“Alright you maggots, I am only going to explain this once so listen up. The tournament is made up of a few parts. Round 1 is a battle royal between all you lot, the last two left standing are the best and the representatives of the east base for the next part of the tournament. Round 2 is a 2 man team tournament in which the representatives of each team up. Each time you win a fight you earn points. Round 3 is mounted combat and lastly Round 4 is a single combat elimination tournament. Understand?”

The instructor paused for a moment and after looked at the nodding heads continued.

“Good, you have 15 minutes to prepare whatever you need and then we will begin the first Round, when you are ready come to the track. More details will be given when you arrive, tardiness of a single second means disqualification.”

As soon as the instructor finished Dan and Perseus looked at each other and grinned. They realized they had both thought of the same thing. They were going to be the representative together. Perseus picked up the two swords he used in training. They were dual Claymores he had been able to create good weapons only just recently, after his blacksmithing reached beginner 7. The stats looked like this.

Dual Hard Iron Claymore

Durability: 55/55

Damage: 20-24

Created by a Blacksmith with decent skill.

Effects:

Strength +15

Speed decrease by 10%

Options:

When used with its counterpart effects and damage are increased by 20%.

Perseus had created them from the same mold and they had become Dual Claymores. This suited Perseus fine as he had found through trial and error that when dual wielding it was better to use two swords together instead of a sword and another weapon. Using a different type of weapon disturbed his balance so he couldn’t fight properly.

He then took off his armor repaired, polished and sharpened all his gear then reequipped them.

‘I should check everything for a final time.
