Chapter 3: Confronting the Boss

Chapter 3: Confronting the Boss

Sarah angrily threw the fire extinguisher at his head. "Where the fuck do you think you're going?" She said, her words seething with anger. "Sa...Sa..Sarah," he stuttered, as he held the back of his head, turned around and sat down at his desk. "I'm sorry Sarah, but I need to get out of here." Sarah's blood began to boil, as she moved within a blink of an eye, grabbing Mr. Harrington's razor sharp letter opener, and pressing it against his throat. Mr. Harrington's eyes widened as he blinked in astonishment, raising his hands up. "Listen Sarah, there is no need to resort to violence," he said with a slight laugh. "Do you think this is funny?" Sarah growled. "No..no I don't," Mr. Harrington said quickly as he shook his head. "Why didn't you help us, hm? How could you leave us out there to die?-" scratch that, why is the mafia fucking after you?" Sarah said, pressing the letter opener deeper into his throat, causing a little blood to trickle down the blade and onto her hand.

"Look Sarah it's a lot you don't-" AHHHH Mr.Harrington screamed in the middle of his sentence, as Sarah drove the letter opener into his left thigh. "You better start explaining yourself,"Sarah said, as she drove the letter opener deeper. "Ahhh, shit ight, what do you want to know?" He asked while grabbing his leg. " I want to know why those armed men from a mafia gang stormed into our office, looking for you," she said. Mr. Harrington took a deep breath, and looked around his office, contemplating if he should tell Sarah the truth. Sarah sensing some uncertainty in him, took the letter opener and drove it into his other thigh, causing Mr. Harrington to yelp in pain. "Don't fucking play with me Mr.Harrington. You better start talking and talking fast if you want to make it outta here alive."

Mr. Harrington swallowed loudly, " Ight look, the mafia gang who came here today is a rival gang that I've been fighting against for years." "WHAT!" Sarah yelled in confusion. "What do you mean fighting against?" "You're a criminal?" She exclaimed. " Yes, I am the leader of my gang, and I've been using this business as a front for all my criminal activities, and to be able to wash my money," he stated. "So you were just going to leave us all out there to die?" "Look Sarah, it's more complicated than that." Sarah cocks her head to the side. "Comp-" she says as she slaps him, and he growls in pain. "Complicated?" Sarah says with a psychotic laugh, as she scratched her head with the letter opener.

"Complicated are those financial spreadsheets, you had me doing every single month. This... hmm," she says, as she circled her arms around indicating the scope of the situation, "this isn't complicated, this is chaotic and deadly." "I know Sarah, I do, but we don't have much time, the police will be here soon," Mr. Harrington said, as he slowly got up from his chair, wincing in pain and limping. Sarah paces back and forth thinking to herself, "If I let him go now, I'll never know the full story, but if we stay here we both will be arrested." "Fine, let's go, but we will talk more about this later." "Yes, we will, here is my number to my burner phone , call me later," Mr. Harrington said, handing her a piece of paper. He then grabbed his things and quickly left out the secret door in his office. Just as Sarah was about to leave she could hear the police coming in. "Shit!" she says under her breath, "I need to hurry up and get out here," she says, as she quickly goes through the secret door and quietly closes it, seconds before the police burst into the office.

Heart racing, Sarah quickly navigated her way through the secret passage. A narrow, dark , and musky corridor that felt claustrophobic, as it twisted and turned like a snake in the night. When Sarah reached a dead end, she panicked not seeing any way out. "Fuck! How am I going to get out of here, I can't barely see," she screamed to herself. Sarah quickly ran her hands across the walls, when she finally felt a small door knob, she then grabbed it, twisted it, and pushed the door open. The opening led to a dark alleyway, desperate to escape this madness, she charged out of the alley running towards a busy street.

Sarah raced down the street, heart almost beating out of her chest, as she heard sirens coming closer. She needed a getaway car and fast. Just then, she spotted a parked car with its engine still humming. Adrenaline still fueling her every movement, Sarah ran towards the car pulling on the door handle, praying for it to be unlocked. The car door gave way at the slight tug of the door handle, allowing Sarah to hop inside. Once Sarah was inside she quickly sped off, the tires screeching against the pavement, as the car's owner chased after her screaming, "HEY!HEY! That's my car!"

Sarah drove erratically, speeding, going in and out of lanes, and running red lights. She kept telling herself , "I just need to get as far away as possible," as she pressed down harder on the gas pedal. As the car roared forward and she came up on a busy intersection, she ran through the light one last time, causing her to be hit from the side by another vehicle. The car spun out, crashing into a pole. Dazed and confused Sarah clutched her side, as blood seeped through her fingers. "Ahhhhh" Sarah screamed as she tried to open the door. " Ma'am are you okay?" The bystander asked. "The ambulance will be here soon." "I'm fine," Sarah says as she tries to get out of the car. " Ma'am you don't look fine, you need to see a doctor immediately." "No I'm...." Sarah tries to say before passing out.

Back at the office, Detective Jones asked , "What happened here?" He says as he walks around in disbelief. "I don't know, but it looks pretty brutal,"detective James says. The detectives surveyed the office, looking for any clues that might paint a clear picture of what happened. "Go talk to the witnesses and see if they will give any insight about what happened here today," detective Jones says. "On it," detective James responded back. Detective James leaves and walks over to where all the employees are sitting. "Can someone explain to me what all transpired in your office today,"Detective James asked, as he pulled out his notebook to take notes. "I can," an employee says, raising her hand, still visibly shaken up by today's events. "We were all getting back from our lunch break and settling back into our desks, when we heard glass shattering and saw armed men dressed in all black with masks, rushing into our office," the employee says. " Do you know why they were here?" Detective James asked.

"They came in guns blazing demanding to see Mr.Harrington, our boss." "Your boss?" Detective James asked in confusion. "Yea our boss, but he wouldn't come out of his office, no matter how much they threatened him." "What else happened?" "Who killed them?" "Kill... they're all dead?" The employee asked, as her eyes widened from the shock. "Yes, unfortunately they didn't survive,"detective James said. The employee dropped to her knees in disbelief. "I..I..I didn't know she was capable of doing something like this," the employee stuttered petrified. "Who?" "Who are you talking about?" Detective James asked. "Our coworker Sarah Jenkins, she is Mr. Harrington's secretary," the employee stated. "Secretary?!" Detective James exclaimed. "But Sarah was acting differently today, I've never seen her act like that before, she took that one guy down so fast, it was like she was a trained assassin," she stated. "Hmm, where is she now? Can I speak with her?" Detective James asked. "Huh?" "She isn't in the office?" The employee asked. "No, is she not sitting amongst you and the other employees?" "No, she never left the office." "Mhmkay," detective James says, as he excuses himself to go speak with his partner detective Jones.

"I believe the secretary is working with the boss," detective James said to his partner. "What do you mean?" Detective Jones asked. "From what I gathered from the employees is that the secretary is the one who took all of these men down by herself," detective James says. "What?" "By herself?" Detective Jones asked in confusion, as static came over the radio. "We found a secret door in the boss's office," one of the policemen said over the radio. Both detectives look at each other, before running over. "Here we come," detective Jones responds back into the radio. As the detectives were running towards the office, one of the mafia members, who was shot in the stomach, slowly gets up and quickly walks out the side door, firmly pressing his hand against his wound. "I need to hurry and get out of here and tell our boss what happened."

The mafia member stumbles out of the office, looking around to see if any other people or officers were around. He then quickly took the emergency stairs to escape. Once he was out of the building and onto the street, he stealthily dips into a side alley, and pulls out his phone, to dial his boss's number. "Speak" the mafia boss says with assertion. "Hey Boss, things didn't go as planned. We didn't get to get Mr.Harrington," the gunman said. "WHAT!" The mafia boss says angrily, while slamming his hand on his desk. "What happened Sal, and you better get to talking or the next time I see you, imma drain every last drop of blood from your body, and mount your head on my wall above my desk," the boss says, menacingly through gritted teeth. Sal's heart began to race, as a chill ran down his spine, causing him to shiver. Sal knew if he said the wrong thing and it didn't make sense, he was done for. He swallowed hard and took a deep breath, "Sal I'm losing my patience, you better start moving your lips before you have none."

"Okay boss look, everything was going according to plan, the security guard we planted inside got us access to the building no problem. We got to the main office, we were able to hold the employees as hostages, and demanded that Mr. Harrington come out. Unfortunately he never stepped foot out of his office, Sal says "And then what happened?" The boss says while smoking a cigar. "Then Eric found the secretary hiding under her desk and forced her to call Mr. Harrington, but he said he wasn't coming out and hung up the phone," Sal added, as the boss slightly chuckled. "Then she tries to escape, so Eric stabs her and I don't know what happened, but she took Eric down and all of our men down within minutes!" Sal exclaimed. "I was also shot in the stomach. That bitch can't be just your ordinary secretary, I believe she is one of Mr. Harrington's secret enforcers, disguised as a secretary," Sal finishes.

The boss took one last drag of his cigar, blowing out a large cloud of smoke. The line got eerily quiet as Sal nervously awaits his boss's response. "Find her and bring her to me," the boss says coldly before hanging up the phone. "FUUUCCCKKK!" Sal screams as he kicks a crate. Sal begins to dial a number *Ring*Ring* "Hello" an unknown voice says "Come get me and take me to the doctor," Sal says right before hanging up.

Hours later Sarah woke up in a hospital bed. The sterile scent of antiseptic stinging her nostrils. When she awoke, her vision was blurry, but she could make out the sterile walls of the hospital room. Sarah winced in pain as she forced herself to get up, only to find a nurse by her side. "You need to take it easy, you lost a lot of blood," the nurse urged gently. "Where am I?" Sarah said while squinting her eyes, trying to adjust them to the brightness of lights. "You're at Foothill Hospital and I am nurse Jane," the nurse responded. As the nurse adjusted her IV, Sarah exhaled, reaching for the remote to turn on the TV. "I'll be back, press the call button if you need anything," Jane says, with a smile before leaving. Sarah focused her attention back towards the TV and gasped in horror when she saw the news with her face plastered across the screen.

"BREAKING NEWS: SARAH JENKINS WANTED FOR MURDER"

Fury and confusion battled within her as she struggled to grasp what had happened. How did it come to this? She was a victim of circumstances, yet here she was, branded a murderer. With her new found strength and determination, she flung her legs over the bed putting her clothes back on and quietly walked towards the door.

Sarah looked out, and saw nurse Jane talking to two police officers. Sarah ducked back into the room. "Think Sarah," she said to herself, trying to calm her nerves. She took a deep breath, determined to untangle the web of lies around her, she walked towards the door, opening it, and walked out, making sure nobody saw her. "I need to make it outta here if I'm going to uncover the truth," Sarah said to herself, underneath her breath.
