Chapter 12: A Dangerous Reunion

Chapter 12: A Dangerous Reunion

Jack, Sarah, Ashley, and Johnson all piled their weapons into the blacked out truck. They were all ready and prepared for the war that lay ahead of them. As Sarah loaded her last weapon into the truck , Jack went over the plan again with everyone. "Okay now that everyone is here, let's go over the plan," Jack said. "When we get there we will enter through the back door of the building. Once we are inside Johnson and his team will take the lead on taking down the additional Russian spies that are in the building. I will then go after the head spy Dimitri. While I'm occupied with him, Sarah you will then go down the hall a few doors down and rescue Mike and take him back to the truck where Ashley will be waiting," Jack stated. "If everything goes to plan, after we are done, I will call Birmingham to tell him we are finished and that's when he will proceed with arresting Amanda and bringing her in for questioning," Jack added.

Everyone nodded in agreement. "Alright, let's head out," Johnson said authoritatively. Johnson piled into another car with his team, while Jack, Sarah, and Ashley piled into the truck. Jack led the way to the Russian's hideout. Johnson and Jack both parked about a block away, and continued their journey to the hideout on foot, while Ashley waited in the car. Once they reached the end of the narrow path, Johnson signaled for his team to split up and surround both sides of the building. Johnson, Jack, and Sarah proceeded to surveillance the area they were in, making sure no one was outside. Johnson's team signaled that the coast was clear, and they all began to walk towards the back of the building.

Jack took the lead to make sure that there was no one guarding the inside. Once the coast was clear, he gestured for them to follow him. They all quietly walked further into the abandoned warehouse. As they reached the beginning of the hallway, Johnson and his team split up into two groups, one heading to the right side of the hallway and the other heading to the left. "Sarah, Mike should be down that way," Jack whispered. Sarah nodded and walked away. Jack stealthily looked around and headed deeper into the warehouse to find Dimitri. As he ventured deeper into the building he thought to himself, "this is going way too smoothly," he said very skeptical.

Just as soon as Jack bent the corner, a bullet whizzed past his head. He quickly retreated behind a wall. He carefully peaked around the wall to see where the gun fire came from. He could see Dimitri crouching down behind a table. Jack slowly inched out and returned fire, causing Dimitri to take cover further into the building. Jack left his hiding spot to follow him. Dimitri then popped out of hiding and started shooting towards Jack as he ran, while Jack chased after him. Dimitri quickly ducked behind a wall before Jack could catch up to him. Pressing his gun against his chest trying to catch his breath, he slightly leaned over to gauge his distance from Jack. Jack was about 10 feet away from him. He quickly retreated back behind the wall, steadying his breathing. Jack settled himself and slowed down his breathing to easily hear where Dimitri could be hiding.

He inched closer and closer to Dimitri's hiding place, and just as he was about to turn the corner Dimitri jumped out, punching Jack in the face causing him to lose his grip on the gun. Dimitri then took his hands and grabbed Jack by the arm stepping forward and flipped Jack over his shoulder, viciously slamming him down onto the concrete floor. Jack gasped for air, after his back collided with the ground, bouncing back up like a basketball. Dimitri tried to run towards his gun, but Jack quickly regained his composure, grabbing Dimitri by the foot and pulling him to the ground. As Dimitri fell he tried to catch himself but failed, causing his face to connect with the floor knocking out two of his teeth. Grabbing his bleeding mouth he lifted his leg to forcefully kick Jack in the face.

Jack let go of his grip on Dimitri's leg, quickly scooting away and using the wall to pull himself up. Both Jack and Dimitri stood off with each other, as they wiped the blood from their mouths. Jack could see his gun out the corner of his eye, it was about a few inches away from him. He looked back up at Dimitri who stared back at him. Jack lunged to the side to grab his gun, but Dimitri was a little quicker than him, and proceeded to kick his gun out the way. Jack then turned to face Dimitri, getting into a fighting stance. Dimitri lunged forward, throwing a mean right hook. Jack swiftly moved to the left, punching Dimitri in his side, causing him to hunch over. Jack then took his hands and placed it over his head and brutally kneed him in the face. Dimitri's head flung back, causing him to fall. Jack ran up, forcefully kicking him in the face.

On the other side of the building, Johnson and his team were in a battle of their own. When the groups branched off, they immediately ran into the other spies, causing them to be caught off guard. The other spies began to fire their guns, hitting one of Johnson's men in the leg. Johnson quickly ran over to him, dragging him to safety, as he ripped his sleeve off his shirt to tourniquet his leg. "Are you alright? Did you get hit anywhere else?" Johnson asked, as he tied his shirt tightly around the wound. "I'm as fine as I can be, I was only shot in the leg," the soldier replied. "Ok, wait here I'll make sure to get you out of here alive," Johnson said, as he ran back towards the gunfire.

Johnson and his team participated in a gun battle with the other Russian spies for around 30 minutes. Once the Russian spies ran out of ammunition, his team stealthily inched closer and closer. Once they had them surrounded, they immediately attacked. Johnson took out a knife stabbing one the spies in the neck, causing blood to spray everywhere. He then shot the other spy hiding in the head. As he proceeded forward he was attacked from behind by one of the spies. The spy hit him in the back of his head with the butt of his gun. Stumbling forward, and grabbing the back of his head, the spy lunged at Johnson, taking advantage of his delirium. The spy cocked his hand back and forcefully slammed it into Johnson's side. Johnson hunched over and spit on the ground. The spy then brutally uppercut him, causing him to fall backwards.

Johnson fell into a pile of crates causing dust to fly everywhere. The spy accidentally inhaled the dust causing him to cough. Taking advantage of the distraction, Johnson then took this time to gain his composure. As his vision returned, he stood up using the remaining dust to mask his movements. He carefully inched forward, making sure not to inhale any of the dust. Once he got close enough to the spy, he took his right hand to punch him in the liver. The spy instantly dropped down on one knee, and grabbed his side. He tried to get up, but it was as if his whole body had completely shut down and he couldn't move. Johnson then forcefully grabbed him by his hair and slammed his face into the ground repeatedly, causing his face to cave in. Johnson then picked the spy's head up, and he could hear him gargling on his own blood. He then dropped the spy and forcefully stomped on his head, the cracking of his skull echoing throughout the warehouse. Johnson then fell back in sync with his team taking down the remaining spies one by one.

After kicking Dimitri in the face, and believing he was knocked out, Jack turned around to pick up his gun. As leaned down to grab his gun, Dimitri jumped on his back, quickly wrapping his arms around his neck, putting him in a chokehold. Dimitri then used the weight of his body to pull Jack backwards, causing them both to fall down. Refusing to let go, Dimitri tightened his grip around Jack's neck. Jack struggled to remove his grip. As his vision began to fade to black, Jack frantically reached for the knife in his pocket. He pulled it out and stabbed Dimitri in the leg before his body went limp. Dimitri yelled out in pain, losing his grip just a little, "AHHHH!!" Jack then slammed the back of his head into Dimitri's nose, breaking it. Jack then took Dimitri's arm to slam him on to the ground, twisting it until he heard the bone crack. He then placed Dimitri under arrest. Jack then took a large rock and with all his might he slammed it on to Dimitri's feet, breaking them. "Now you can't run away," Jack said with a mischievous grin. "I'll be back for you," he added as he ran to find the rest of his team. Dimitri stared Jack down as he ran away, lying on the ground unable to move.

Sarah stealthily walked down the dark and musky hallway, moving her gun from side to side. "Where are you Mike? Please still be alive," Sarah pleaded with herself. Sarah ventured deeper and deeper into the darkness, looking for any signs of Mike. She finally stumbled upon a room that looked just like the one Jack described. She rushed over to the window to see if she could see anything. The window was so dusty, she could barely see through it. "How did Jack see anything through this window," she said, as she used her spit to try to clear the glass. Sarah squinted her eyes, desperately trying her best to see anything, but she couldn't. Tears began to silently stream down her face, as she backed up from the window.

Just as she was about to walk away and give up, she heard something being knocked over. Sarah quickly jumped into action, trying to open the door, but it was locked. She then pulled out a device to help her pick the lock. "I'm coming Mike, just hold on," she shouted through the door. Sarah frantically tried to unlock the door, her heart pounding in her chest. When she finally unlocked the door, she forcefully swung it open, and charged inside the dark room. She pressed her body up against the wall to feel for a light switch, turning it on. Sarah's eyes squinted from the brightness. Once her eyes started to adjust, she blinked away the remainder of her tears. When Sarah turned around, she immediately dropped to her knees and vomited at the sight of Mike's brutally beaten and bloodied body. "Mmm.. mmmm.. Mike," she stuttered as she slowly walked towards him.

Mike's clothes were basically ripped to shreds, there was blood everywhere, both of his eyes were blackened, his right eye almost swollen shut, his lips were busted, and his breathing was shallow. Mike was clinging on to life. Sarah carefully placed her hands on his face to lift his head up. "Mike, can you hear me?" she asks, as she tries to look him in the eyes. Her heart shattered at the sight of him, as she blamed herself. "I should have never brought you into this," she said, as she let the tears flow. Mike tried to look at her, but couldn't. "I'm going to get you out of here," Sarah said, as she untied him. When Sarah finally freed Mike from his bonds, she slung his arm over her shoulder, helping him up. She began to walk, but it was difficult, as Mike was essentially dead weight.

Sarah walked slowly out the room, her determination to save Mike driving her. "You're going to be alright Mike. I'll make sure of it," she said through breaths. Mike tried to lift his head up to look at her, but he was too weak. Sarah pressed on, until they got to the end of the hallway, seeing the light come in from the exit, she quickened her pace. "We're almost there Mike, just hold on for a bit longer," she said, as she looked at him. Just as Sarah and Mike were about to reach the door, one of the spies jumped in front of them pointing their gun. "Don't move," he said, with a thick Russian accent. Sarah froze in her tracks, trying to figure out what to do next. If she didn't figure out what to do quickly, they would be trapped. "I can't let Mike die, I need to get him to safety," she thought to herself. Sarah kicked up dust that was at her feet, momentarily blinding the spy. He stumbled backwards, as she carefully placed Mike against the wall. Using the element of surprise, Sarah ran using the wall to give her momentum, as she flung herself forward, punching the spy in the jaw.

The spy stumbled backwards, wiping the blood from his mouth. The spy then punched Sarah with so much force, she flew back, causing her to crash into the wall. Dazed, confused, and trying to catch her breath, she shook her head and moved out the way, before the spy could connect his second punch. Sarah moved around him like a lion stalking their prey. She kicked him in his leg and punched him in his side. He took a step back and grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the face repeatedly. He then slammed her body on the floor, knocking the wind out of her. As she gasped for air, he picked her back up again by the neck, and began to choke her. Sarah then smirked at him, as she looked him in his eyes, before she pulled out her knife, plunging it into one of his eyes. The spy yelled in agonizing pain, "Ahhh!! What the fuck," he said, as he placed his hand over his left eye, and dropping Sarah in the process. Sarah gasped for air, as she quickly got up to take Mike out of the warehouse.

As Sarah flung his arm over her shoulder and began walking towards the exit. The spy pulled out his gun and said, "you're not going anywhere bitch." Sarah quickly turned around as he fired the gun, stepping in front of Mike to block the bullet. The bullet went through her stomach and out her back. Sarah then fell to the ground, causing Mike to go down with her. "Fuck," Sarah says through gritted teeth. "SARAH!!!," Jack yells out, just as the spy cocked his gun to fire again. Jack quickly drew his gun shooting the spy in the head. The spy stiffly fell to the ground, blood gushing out of his head onto the concrete. Jack ran so fast to Sarah, he floated.

"Ashley calls the ambulance and the director, Sarah has been shot," Jack yells through his ear piece. "What omg, yes I'll call right now," Ashley responds, as she picks up her phone to call for help. "Sarah, can you hear me?" Jack asked. Sarah slowly opened her eyes to look at him. "You have to hold on Sarah, the ambulance should be here soon," Jack said, as he held back tears. "Jack," Sarah says weakly, as she slowly places her hand on his face. "Yes," he said, as he placed his hand over her hand. "Jack," she said, as she swallowed her bloody spit. "Please don't blame yourself, it's not your fault. You risked your life to save mines and Mike's and I'll forever be so grateful for that. You fought your hardest," Sarah said, as she coughed up blood. "Sarah don't talk save your strength," Jack said, as he looked down at her, his heart breaking. "It's okay Jack, please make sure Mike is okay," she added. Hearing the ambulance in the distance, "just hold on Sarah, the ambulance is almost here," Jack pleaded. Sarah smiled at him, her hand still on his face. "I love y-" Sarah tried to say before she closed her eyes and her body went limp in his arms. "SARAH!!! SARAH!!" Jack screamed through tears. "Wake up Sarah," he begged. Just as he said that, the paramedics came rushing in.

They removed Sarah from his bloody arms, and began to perform CPR on her, and hook her up to the machines. They quickly put her on the stretcher and rushed her to the hospital. The other paramedics attending to Mike rushed him to the hospital as well. Jack sat in stunned silence, as he looked down at his bloody hands. Johnson and his team came up from the other side of the warehouse. Johnson walked over to Jack placing his hand under his shoulder, and helped him up. "Sarah's a fighter, she is going to be alright. Let's wrap this up, so you can get to her as soon as possible," Johnson said, trying to comfort him. Jack walked outside to get some fresh air and to call Director Birmingham. "We have neutralized the threat. Dimitri and some of his men are in custody. We were able to rescue Mike, but unfortunately Sarah was shot in the process," Jack said, with a sense of urgency and anger. "Good. Where is Sarah now?" Birmingham asked. "Her and Mike were both rushed to the hospital, once I'm finished up here I'm going to head over there. I'll give you an update on her condition then," Jack stated. "Ok, the CIA should be on the scene, just hand it over to them and you can leave," Birmingham added. "Will do sir," Jack said, as he hung up the phone.

Jack walked over to Johnson to inform him of the conversation he just had with the director. "Ashley should still be waiting in the car, let's round up your men and head out," Jack said, as he walked away. Johnson signals to his man to head back to the car, while Jack gives a quick run down to the CIA agent in charge. Both Johnson and Jack head back to the car together, moving in silence, as today's events have drained them. "Is Sarah okay? Is she going to make it?" Ashley urgently asked, as soon as they got back into the car. Jack sat in silence while Johnson tried to answer her burning questions. "We don't know at the moment, but she was rushed to the hospital. So can you please take us there," Johnson said, as he leaned back into his seat. "Got it," Ashley said, as she quickly started the car and drove off.

Back at the U.S government secret building, director Birmingham called a few CIA agents after he got off the phone with Jack, to help assist him in the arrest of Amanda. He sat in his office and waited for them to arrive. Amanda, oblivious of the situation, continued to do her mundane tasks that the director had given her. "It's gonna be a long day. I wonder if Dimitri finished up the mission, so we can all head back home tonight," Amanda said to herself. As Amanda was making copies of a few things, she saw a few CIA agents enter the building and head straight to the director's office. "I wonder what that is about," she asked herself. Brushing it off she went back to doing her job.

"Director Birmingham needs to see you, it's urgent," her coworker walked over to her and told her. Amanda neatly stacked the files of paper and headed towards his office. "You asked to see me," she said, as she entered. "Amanda," he said, his voice low and measured, "thank you for coming." She swallowed hard, taking a moment to gather herself, as she crossed the threshold. "Of course, Director. You said it was urgent?" "Sit down ," he commanded, gesturing to the chair across from him. As she complied, a knot formed in her stomach. Something was off. Birmingham's expression was unreadable, his hands steepled in front of him.

"I want to discuss the recent development regarding our program," he began, his tone deceptively calm. "You're been with us, almost every step of the way, so you should understand how critical it is that we maintain our security protocols." "Absolutely. I'm completely committed to the program," Amanda replied, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She felt the weight of his scrutiny, and her instincts screamed that something was coming. He leaned forward slightly, narrowing the gap between them, his gaze intensifying. "You know, we've picked up some chatter that's concerning. There has been a report of a potential infiltrator within our ranks. A spy, if you will." Amanda clenched her jaw, her pulse quickening. "There is no way he suspects that it's me. I've been too damn careful to get caught," she said to herself. "A spy? Here? We get everyone thoroughly— I mean, it's inconceivable that someone could—"

"Indeed," he interrupted, his tone shifting just slightly. " We do conduct an intense vetting process. However it seems that not even our best systems are foolproof. Sometimes, one just slips through the cracks," he paused, letting his words hang in the air like a storm cloud. "The enemy might be closer than you think." Her breath hitched, and she forced herself to maintain eye contact. "What are you suggesting, sir?" Birmingham's lips curled into a thin smile, but his eyes remained cold as steel. "I'm not suggesting anything yet, Amanda. But I have my suspicions..."he trailed off, the implication lingering in the air like a noose around her neck. A shaft of ice shot down Amanda's spin. "That's—"

"Unbelievable? Perhaps. But I've seen the telemetry," he interrupted. A flicker of triumph darkened his gaze as he continued. "The transfers, the meetings. It's a delicate game, isn't it? One of double lives, where the tiniest mistake could bring everything crashing down." Her heart raced. "I assure you, Director, I am loyal to this program. I've dedicated everything to it." The words felt hollow, a desperate plea that bounced off the walls of his office. "I'm sure you are," he snickered, "but loyalty can be a mirage", he replied, his expression inscrutable. "But tell me, Amanda, have you ever considered what it means to play both sides? To be the hunter and the hunted? I suspect it's exhilarating, the rush of deception." She recoiled at his insinuation, anger and fear mixing in a volatile cocktail.

"You're wrong. I've never betrayed this agency. I don't know what you think you've discovered but—" Birmingham began to play the recorded phone conversation between her and Dimitri. Amanda words caught in her throat, as she froze at the sound of her own voice. Realization crashed over her like a tidal wave, drowning her in fear. The jig was up, and suddenly the room felt smaller, the walls closing in. "Wait," her mind raced, searching for a way out. "We can fix this. Together." The director leaned back in his chair with a smirk on his face. He raised an eyebrow, the glint in his eyes, a mix of disappointment and resolve. "You should have thought of that before crossing the line Amanda."

Standing, Birmingham pressed a concealed button on his desk. A soft beep echoed, followed by a heavy thud as the door behind her swung open. "Agent Lawson please escort Amanda out," he said, as he sat back down in his chair. As she turned, terror clawed at her throat, Amanda knew she only had mire moments left, before everything she built shattered around her. But deep down, even with the walls closing in, a flicker of defiance lit in her soul. Some secrets were worth dying for and she would take her truth to the grave.

Amanda pulled out a concealed knife and stabbed agent Lawson in the stomach. She then kicked the next agent in the head causing him to stumble backwards. Birmingham looked on in amusement. Amanda fought for her life in that office, because she knew if she was caught, she was as good as dead. As Amanda was preoccupied fighting one of the agents, another one came up from behind her, hitting her upside her head, knocking her unconscious. "Now, take her in and call someone to come and clean this mess up," Birmingham demanded. "On it sir," one of the agents replied, while they cuffed her and dragged her away.
