Chapter 11: Preparing for the Rescue

Chapter 11: Preparing for the Rescue

Johnson returned to the safe house about 2 hours later. As he walked through the door, both Sarah and Ashley greeted him. "Did everything go as planned?" Ashley asked. "I believe so, I didn't run into any issues," Johnson replied. "Well since that is done we just need to wait for Jack to get back so we all can go over his findings," Sarah said, while sitting back down on the couch. All three of them waited around for about an hour before Jack returned.

When Jack walked through the door it was as if all of the color had drained from his face and his life force had been drained from his body. Jack walked in like a zombie to the chair next to Sarah and sat down. It was a long eerie silence before Sarah spoke, she turned to Jack placing his hands in hers, while Jack stared out at nothing, it was like he wasn't even there. "Jack what happened? Are you okay? Is Mike okay?" Sarah asked softly. Jack didn't respond and Sarah turned to look at both Ashley and Johnson, who both sat there with confused looks on their faces. "Jack, can you hear me?" Sarah asked as she squatted down in front of him, waving her hand in his face. Jack finally broke his silence. He looked down at Sarah with a deep sense of sadness in his eyes, "I'm sorry Sarah," he said barely above a whisper."What happened?" What do you mean you're sorry?" Sarah asked urgently.

Jack looked up, "I found their hideout and Mike was there, badly injured and bloody, but I couldn't save him by myself, so I left him, they're more russian spies than we anticipated," Jack replied while fighting back the tears that welded up in the corner of his eyes. "It's okay Jack, you did good today. You found out where they are hiding, where Mike is, and that at the very least he is alive. That's all I could ask of you. Thank you Jack for putting your life on the line for me," Sarah said as she got up and hugged him. "Now all we need is a plan to save Mike and to take out the Russians spies before it's too late," Ashley replied sweetly, while patting Jack on the shoulder.

Sarah picked up her phone to call Director Birmingham. "Hello," he said very sleepily as he answered the phone. "Director, we found them," Sarah slightly screamed through her phone. "Hmm?" "Wh.. what did you get?" The Director said groggily. "We got the location of their hideout," Sarah repeated. He leans up in his bed to fully wake himself up, taking a sip of water from the cup on his night stand, and looks at the time. "Ok ok let me make sure I heard you correctly. You have found where they are hiding?" The director asked, still trying to shake off the cob webs in his brain. "Yes that's correct."

"Jack tailed Amanda and was able to get the location and confirm that Mike is essentially still alive," Sarah said replying to his question. "We are going to need to act fast to save Mike as they plan on killing him tomorrow. Also the "accidents" for the remaining sleeper agents will start being discovered tomorrow as well," he stated. "Oh, we did get some additional information from Jack that there are more than just Amanda and the guy I met that are hiding out as well," she added. "We are going to need to adjust our plans, I'll be there first thing tomorrow morning," he promised. "Okay, I'll let the others know," Sarah said, as she hung up the phone. Sarah placed her phone back in her pocket and turned around to inform the others.

"The director will be here first thing in the morning to come up with a new plan to raid their hideout and rescue Mike," Sarah told them. "That's in a few hours," Ashley says while looking down at her watch. "How about we all get some sleep, it's been a long day, and we can all regroup tomorrow," Johnson added. "Sounds like a plan," both Sarah and Ashley replied. "Since it's late, you can stay in the room down the hall," Sarah said while pointing in the direction of the room. "Well thank you, I'll see it all in the morning," Ashley says as she takes her leave.

Sarah turns to look at Jack, who was still sitting and not really mentally there with them. "I'm going to head to bed too," Johnson says as head towards his room. Sarah looked up at him and said "good night see you in the morning." Sarah proceeded to walk over to Jack and sat down right beside him. "Jack, are you okay?" She asked, her voice gentle. Jack snapped out of his trance and looked at Sarah. "I'm sorry I couldn't save him and left him there, but if I tried I know we both wouldn't have made it out alive," Jack said somberly. Sarah gently placed her hands on his face, turning it towards her. "Is alright Jack. You were outnumbered. There would have been nothing you could have done, and I rather you came back safe and alive than you risk your life and his to try to get him out," Sarah said sweetly looking into his eyes.

"Don't beat yourself up about it, for now we know he is okay and when the Director gets here in the morning, we will devise a plan to recuse him and take them out," Sarah added. Jack hung his head low, as he was disgusted with himself for not being able to bring Mike back. Sarah placed both of her heads on his face, lifting it up to meet her gaze. "It's gonna be okay, we still have a chance to save him. Let's not give up on ourselves now," she said smiling brightly. Jack nodded his head in agreement, but in the back of his mind he hoped that Mike will still be alive when they go back, because if he wasn't he would be able to live with himself and he knew Sarah would never forgive him.

Jack got lost in Sarah's eyes for a few moments, finally taking her in. "Sarah, that disguise is really good, you look different," he said with a half smile. "Oh you finally noticed," she said, as she blushed and began to laugh. "But your eyes tell me that you are still my Sarah," he says as he leans in closer. Sarah froze as her cheeks began to turn red and she quickly turned away. "Ok now," she softly laughed, as she placed her hands on her warm face. "It's time for us both to go to bed now," she said, her back still facing him. "Yeah you're right," Jack says as he walks over to her and hugs her from behind. "Thank you for being there for me," Jack says, as he embraces her.

Sarah froze as she didn't know what to do. She slowly removed his arms from around her and turned to face him, "you're welcome," she says with a smile. "Now I'm going to go to bed, I'll see you in the morning good night," she said, as she turned around and quickly walked to her room. Jack smiled as he watched her leave, "good night Sarah." Jack picked up his things and headed towards his room. Once Sarah got in her room she quickly closed the door, firmly pressing her back against it. "What was that?" "Does Jack like.... No no no," she says to herself as she walks towards the bed and goes to sleep.

A man was driving at 6am on his way to work, in his own little world. As he came up to the tunnel he could see a car, "I wonder what is going on with them," he says to himself. As soon as those words left his lips, he could see a person slumped over the steering wheel. He abruptly stopped his car causing his body to jerk forward. He pulled his car over and got out to see if the person was ok. As he gets closer to the car he can see it's a woman and she isn't moving.

"Ma'am are you okay," the man says as he reaches out to tap her. As he leans in and touches her, her body stiffly falls over. The man yells "WHAT THE FUCK," and falls onto the ground trying to scoot away from the body. He quickly gets up, runs to his car and calls 911. "911 what's your emergency," the dispatcher says as they answer the phone. "There is a dead body!!" He yells into the phone. "Calm down sir, where are you?" "I'm in the car tunnel on 5th and Maine," he replied. "Okay, police are on their way," the dispatcher said before hanging up the phone.

The man then goes to his car to wait for the police, still in shock. Detective Jones and Detective James arrived on the scene about 30 minutes later, walking up to one of the police officers. "What did you find?" Detective Jones asked. "Well, the gentleman over there said he was on his way to work when he saw a car crashed into the wall. He proceeded to get out of his car and that's when he discovered this woman's dead body," one of the officers says while they walk towards the woman's car. "Do we know the cause of death?" Detective James asked.

"From the looks of it, it seems that she was intoxicated and crashed the car, but I won't know until I do a full autopsy," the police officer added. "Ok well let's secure the scene," detective jones said. Detective James walked around to the passenger side of the car and started going through the scattered items. He picked up the ID he found and his eyes widened, "Jones!!!" he yelled. Jones ran over to where he was, "What.. What is it?" detective Jones asked. "The dead woman is the woman we have been searching for," detective James says as he hands over the ID.

Detective Jones took the ID and looked it over. "This could possibly be ruled as a suicide, considering she probably felt she had no where to run and would rather end it all than be arrested or killed," Jones replied. "You're probably right, but we won't know if this is her until the autopsy report comes out," James said. Both detectives headed back to the precinct after looking over all the evidence, speaking to the witness, and checked the area out for any suspicious activity or cameras. Once they both got back to their desk, they jumped head first into their investigation. Detective James and Detective Jones went through the evidence, witness statements, photos from the crime scene from Harrington's office and under the tunnel.

They both were looking to see if they missed anything as both cases are linked to each other. "The autopsy results are out," the police coroner said. They both rushed over to the morgue, both on the edge of their seats. When they arrived, they immediately started asking questions. "Is this Sarah Jenkins?" Detective James asked. "What happened to her?" Detective Jones asked. "Were there any signs of foul play?" They both asked. "Now breathe, before you both pass out," the coroner said laughing. "What I found is that she died way before the car crash from alcohol poisoning," the coroner added. "I was able to verify her identity through fingerprinting, dental records, and blood type," "okay is she Sarah Jenkins?" Detective James asked.

"Yes.... but something is off," the coroner said. "What's the issue?" Detective Jones asked. "So all the markers point to her being Sarah Jenkins, but her face looks completely different and the height is a little off by an inch and a half," the coroner told the detectives. "Maybe she changed her face to make sure she didn't get caught," detective James says. "Yes that's true, but her face has no indications that she has undergone any plastic surgery." "Hmm, that's very strange," Jones said while stroking his beard. "I'm going to look into it further and if I figure out something I will call you," the coroner replied. "Okay then, don't forget to call us if something comes up," James said, as he and Detective Jones left. "These cases are starting to become weirder and weirder," Jones says, as they get in the car and James nods in agreement. As soon as they were about to pull out of the parking lot, a call came over their radios about another body found. They both looked at each other in confusion as detective Jones pulled out of the parking lot.

Director Birmingham woke up, got dressed, and headed over towards the safe house. When he got there Sarah was making breakfast and setting up the table for everyone. "Good Morning Director Birmingham, Sarah said, as she finished up making breakfast. "Good Morning ma'am do you happen to have enough for this old man to eat?" He asked. "Oh yes we have plenty, why don't you go sit down and I'll set a spot for you at the table," Sarah replied. The director went to sit down in the living room next to Jack, as he waited for breakfast to be ready. "Good morning Jack, who is the lady in the kitchen? You don't want to be giving out this location if you don't want to be found," the director said assertively.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

"What lady in the kitchen?" Jack asked. "The one making the breakfast," Birmingham said. Jack walked over to the kitchen and laughed deeply, "That's Sarah director Birmingham," Jack said laughing and pointing towards the kitchen. "Sarah!?" Birmingham said shockingly. "Yes, Ashley the facial reconstruction specialist, was able to use some substance to change her face and features," Jack said. "Hmm, she did a good job. I didn't even recognize her," Birmingham said while laughing. Both Johnson and Ashley joined them a few seconds later. "Good Morning," both of them shouted. "Who is she?" Director Birmingham asked Jack. "Oh, this is Ashley Evans, she is the facial reconstruction specialist I was telling you about," Jack said, while gesturing for Ashley to come over to him. "And Ashley, this Director Birmingham," he added.

"Nice to meet you," Ashley said, as she shook his hand. "Your work is very good, I didn't even recognize Sarah," he laughed. "Thank you sir, I appreciate the compliment and I'm glad to be of assistance," Ashley said with a smile. "Breakfast is ready," Sarah yelled. "Oooooo wonderful I'm starving," Johnson said, as he rubbed his stomach. They all sat down at the table, while Sarah brought a buffet of food, and everyone stared in amazement at the plethora of food she placed down in front of them. "This all looks wonderful," Birmingham stated. "If everything tastes as good as it looks, we are definitely in for a treat," Johnson said, smiling while rubbing his hands together.

"Oh trust me everything is going to taste amazing, just you wait," Jack said with a smile. "Have you tasted Sarah's cooking before?" Ashley asked. "Yes she cooked breakfast for me after she stayed at my house, and it was delicious," Jack said smiling and looking at Sarah. "She's been to your house!!?"Ashley exclaimed. "I've never even been to your house or know where you live," she added. Jack laughed, "Sarah ended up at my house because of this current situation and she asked for my help so I had her come over," Jack said matter of factly. Ashley caught on to Jack's gaze and saw him smiling at Sarah and she felt uneasy, as she always wanted Jack for a very long time, but just never got the chance to express her feelings.

"Hmm okay, I see," Ashley said while looking down at her plate. "Okay guys I hope you enjoy everything that I made, you guys can dig in now," Sarah said with a smile before sitting down and making her own plate. Sarah made a huge breakfast spread of eggs, bacon, sausages, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, fruit platter, French toast, waffles, pancakes, toast, coffee, juices, and plenty of other dishes. Everyone started to dig in, "Omg this food is amazing," Ashley said while enjoying her food. "Yea Sarah this tastes delicious," Johnson said, seconding Ashley's statement. "If I would have known you could cook like this Sarah, I would have definitely asked for you to come and cook for me sooner," the director laughed. "You are definitely a jack of all trades, " director Birmingham said.

"See I told you it was going to be delicious," Jack added. Sarah started blushing, "come on guys everything isn't all that great," she said trying not to blush harder. "Girl you're crazy this is a 5-star service right here," Ashley said laughing. "Thank you Ashley for that, and thank you for helping me out in this situation as well," Sarah said with a bright smile, trying to not cry. They all had small talk while they enjoyed their food. "So what happened yesterday, Birmingham asked while wiping his mouth with a napkin.

The energy in the room quickly shifted. "Well when I first started following Amanda I believed that it was pointless, as she just seemed like a normal government employee," Jack stated. "However after about 1 to 2 hours she received a phone call and she immediately started speaking Russian," he added. "And that made my senses heighten immediately. As soon as she got that phone call she checked out the store and headed to this abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town. When she got there she just paced back and forth and mumbled words to herself," Jack said, while everyone listened intently to what he was saying. "I thought it was a trap and she had caught onto me, but then she walked out of the building and headed down a weird narrow path that then led to another abandoned building that has been overgrown by shrubbery," Jack says. "She went inside and I heard a few words like Mike, oil, and home but I didn't hear anything else," he added.

Luckily I found a back door to get inside and there were no cameras or guards in the area. When I walked deeper inside, two Russian spies came out of nowhere, so I had to hide behind some boxes. When they passed, I was able to find Amanda and a Russian guy talking. After that I proceeded to explore the abandoned building some more to see if I could find Mike," he said, his voice sounding low. When I found him the door was locked and I could only see what was on the inside through a small window," he said, as his head hung low. "It's okay Jack you did amazing and because of your hard work we were able to locate Mike and now get the chance to save him," Sarah said with a smile. "I know you are right I just wish that I could have brung him back with me," Jack said sadly.

"You were outnumbered, with no weapons there was nothing you could have done," Ashley said, placing her hand on his shoulder. Jack said thank you while gently removing her hand from his shoulder. "Okay since there are more Russian spies than we anticipated we are going to need to create a tactical team to execute this operation," Birmingham said. "You are correct sir," Johnson added. "Johnson, you can recruit a few men from your team, but make sure to keep the reason top secret," Birmingham added. "Yes sir will do," Johnson replied. "Jack and Sarah since Sarah haven't been...," before the director could finish his thought his phone began to ring. "Excuse me for a second," he said as he got up from the table.

"I wonder what's that about," Ashley said. "Probably something to do with this mission," Jack replied. "Ok since we are going to have a few extra men from your team Johnson, we can enter from the back door and your guys can handle the other spies, while I'll handle the man that Amanda was talking to and Sarah you can go rescue Mike," Jack said. "Oh I almost forgot," Jack said, as he reached in his pocket for his phone. "I took a picture of Amanda and the Russian man together. Is this who you met with that night in the warehouse?" Jack asked, while passing the phone to Sarah. Sarah took the phone and looked at the picture, her body felt hot inside, as she stared at the man who threatened her and Mike's life. "Yes that's him," Sarah responded, her words seething with rage.

"I figured," Jack added. "Let me see," Johnson asked. Sarah handed the phone over to him. "Is this the guy that took Mike?" He asked. "Yes," Sarah said, her blood boiling, as she clenched her fist so hard, that it drew a little blood. "I think I know him," Johnson replied. Sarah, Ashley, and Jack all snapped their necks so fast, that they had whiplash. "What do you mean you know him," Sarah asked angrily. "Whoa calm down, not like that," Johnson said, throwing his hands up defensively. Jack placed a hand on Sarah's shoulder to try to calm her down. "It was a few months back, but he was meeting with Amanda in the parking lot. They were having an intense conversation when I came out to head home, but I couldn't make out what they were saying," he said. "Then what happened?" Jack asked.

"When I came out and they saw me, they both immediately stopped talking. Which was odd at the time, but I didn't think really much of it," he stated. "When I walked over to Amanda to see if she was ok, the guy stepped in front of her and I slowly backed up. She then whispered something in his ear and he backed off. I then proceeded to ask her who that was and she said it was her boyfriend or brother I don't really remember, but after I checked if she was okay and she told me not to tell anyone he was there, she then got in the car with him and drove off.

That whole situation was weird, but I didn't think anything of it, as I thought she didn't want anyone to know, as this is a government secret building that only people with a special clearance should know," he says. "Why didn't you tell director Birmingham," Sarah asked, still a little pissed off. "Tell me what," Birmingham said, startling everyone, as they jumped in their seats. "Johnson saw Amanda with the Russian spy that kidnapped Mike and threatened my life about two weeks ago," Sarah said, as she snatched the phone outta Johnson's hand to give to the director. Birmingham took the phone from her and analyzed the picture, "you made contact with him Johnson?" The director asked.

"Yes sir I did, but I didn't talk to him he just kind of walked off before I could," Johnson responded. "Well it would have been important information to know back then, as our building is now compromised," the director barked. "I am extremely sorry sir," Johnson said. "How can we trust you and your team if you are withholding something like this from your own boss?" "Are you working with Amanda?" Sarah asked, as she stared in disgust at him. "No no no it's nothing like that, it was just a one off thing I thought it was nothing serious and she said she had the ok from Birmingham so I just went on about my business," Johnson spoke, as he tried to clear his name and defend himself.

"Ok let's all calm down, we don't have time to be fighting with each other," Jack said as he got up. "Director, what was that call about?" He asked. "That was a call from one of my connections at the police precinct, they have found "Sarah's body" and a few of the other "dead" sleeper agents," he stated. "Ok that's good, we can still fool Amanda into believing that their plan is working and use that to our advantage," Jack said. "You are right," Sarah said, still glaring at Johnson. "We need to execute our plan before we can't bring Mike back alive," Jack said.

"This is what we are going to do, we are going to round up Johnson and his team and you all are going to head to the hideout and rescue Mike, while you do that I will give Amanda the news about Sarah and the other agents, so she can call her contact and let him know what's going on while your on the way. Once I do that I will keep Amanda busy so she will not be around her phone to get a call and be tipped off about what is going on. When you are finished give me a call and I will then proceed to arrest Amanda and take her in for questioning," Director Birmingham said, running down their plan. "Ok let's all get ready and head out," Jack said.

"Wait, hold up. What about me?" Ashley said, looking around me. "You can stay in the car with one of my soldiers and be our get away driver," Johnson said. "That sounds like a plan," Birmingham said. "Okay imma leave and I will give you a call when it's time to head out so we won't tip Amanda off or them about our plan," Director Birmingham said. "Thank you for the breakfast," he added as he walked out the door. "You're welcome," Sarah yells back at him. "Okay everyone let's get ready, Johnson, call your team to meet us here and make sure you explain this mission is top secret, don't give them too much information that isn't needed," Jack said.

"Doing it right now," Johnson replied back. "Sarah and Ashley you both can get ready, make sure you both grab your weapons and anything needed to make sure this mission goes off without a hitch," Jack added. "Okay," both Sarah and Ashley said simultaneously as they headed to their rooms. Jack quickly cleaned up the table and headed to his room to get ready as well.

When director Birmingham immediately got to the building he asked Amanda to come to his office. Amanda picked up her things and quickly fell in right behind him following him to his office. As soon as they walked through the door, Amanda turned to close the door behind her. "Sarah Jenkins' body has been found as well as a few other sleeper agents," Birmingham said. Amanda did her best to stop a smile from creeping across her face. "Imma need you to dispose of their files and make sure you fully dismantle the sleeper agent program. Amanda nodded in agreement and walked out to her office.

As soon as she left, the director called Jack to let him know that they could head towards the hideout now and hung up. Once Amanda got back to her office she immediately closed the door and did a silent celebration, as she called Dimitri and told him the good news. Dimitri explained to Amanda that he is about to start questioning Mike and if he doesn't give any additional information he is just going to kill him. "Ladno, potoropis' i ubey yego, chtoby my mogil nakonets pokonchit' s etim i poyti domoy," Amanda said before she hung up the phone. (Translation: Okay hurry up and kill him so we can finally end this and go home.) As soon as Amanda got off the phone the director called her into his office to ask her to do a multitude of different jobs. "Ugh! It's gonna be a busy day," Amanda said, as she ran back and forth to get the task done in a timely manner.
