Chapter 29 Turning Point 1 Isle of Corruption (Start)

It’s been a few days since we set off from the port. Few new things I learned include how to tie a knot and that Nephele gets easily seasick, she’s been struggling, she looks like a ghost sometimes, I think she’s up in the crow’s nest right now. But, so far, everything has been calm. No wandering gods or heavy storms. It’s just quiet. Which is a nice change of pace.

I got caught up with Bob about the short past. He told me that it’s been about a week and a half since the prison escape, I honestly didn’t expect that it would be that long since the escape. Bob was with a ship that went to the nearest Free Cities and just picked up odd jobs to make money.

He told me that he’s working up to something, don’t know what yet, but he spoke so passionately about it. I can guess that most of the work he’s done so far involve something physical or mercenary in nature, just an obvious hunch looking at him. Man built like a Part 1 Jojo character. He's probably got those thunder thighs heh.

Captain Aton did talk with me and Nephele the coming day after we left port. Most of the stuff that’s on board are just your common goods, nothing special. He asked if we wanted any work to earn a little money. I declined, but Nephele went ahead even with the sickness. I'm partially regretting not taking a job, might've made this whole trip less boring, I might still ask, but I kinda want to stay a bit lazy.

Among the security that the Daywalker has you’ve got the leader, that being the big man Bob, after him we’ve got two Dwarves, probably exiles. A Halfling and some Half-Orcs. Aton really paid for some muscle, but I’m surprised he didn’t hire any Dragonblood or Azca. Dragon and lizard races are pretty well known fighters and they do partake in mercenary jobs. They’re so fun by the way! I love them! I had a second character that was an Azca, man, hot lizard female characters hit different.

Right about now I’m at the front of the ship just watching over the waters. It’s calming, I think a bit clearer like this. Sadly, I haven’t had the chance to try out some of my other spells. I haven’t tried any summon spells either because I worry that something might go wrong. Unexpected explosions and such.

I’ll need to find time to try them once we reach our destination. Matter of fact I need to find time for a lot of things. Learning mostly, I breezed through that Alchemy journal in a day and a half, and my notebook says that my Alchemy skill is at thirty. I’ve got a ways to go. Besides the whole learning thing, let’s just say that I’ve been feeling a little..

Pent up…

And that I’d like a release of sorts, but I do not have the privacy to even remotely try anything like that here, let alone know how to…operate this new body exactly. And I’m not keen or confident on using objects. I just glance to my staff before I look back to the waters. Don’t even think about Ynn.

What the hell am I going to be doing for the next few weeks? I could improve on some stuff. I think my sailing stat went up just a little bit. Probably from zero to one. I’ve got a lot of stats in the single digits. And only a handful above eighty, let alone ninety. I guess in due time that will change.

I glance up into the sky and….huh..

That’s odd.

The sky is becoming grey, like really grey, the bad kind. I glance back to take a look at the crew and most of them have stopped moving and are just staring at the sky. They aren’t mind controlled, but they are certainly mesmerized to a degree. This feels familiar. From an event or place in the world.

I step away from the edge and start heading up to the helm, on the way I hear a few sailors make silent prayers to themselves. I glance over to see Nephele on her way down from the crow’s nest. I climb the steps to the helm and see Aton and Bob just watching the skies.

Bob notices me and gives me a friendly nod.

“This….shouldn’t be possible.” Aton says “Weather like this shouldn’t be here.” He adds

“The feeling of air has changed as well.” Bob says

I can’t really feel that, might be the Elven blood or maybe I'm just not that perceptive.

“Are there any creatures that lurk beneath these waters?” Bob asks

I move towards them.

“No, there shouldn’t be any and even if there was, we’d be ready for it.” Aton comments then notices my presence “Is this weather magical?” he asks

I just shake my head. I know I'm a mage and all and that I know a lot, but I'm not a weather reporter.

“I don’t know.” I mention

“Captain!” one of the crew members shout from the deck “Land!”

“Land?” Aton looks more concerned than ever

All three of us look forward and the sailor wasn’t wrong. That’s a fucking island that just appeared out of nowhere. And it’s fucking huge. The grey skies above us are nothing compared to how that place looks.

“Moving islands aren’t something I’m familiar with.” Bob comments, that man is oddly calm

I can hear Aton gulp, I see his hands grip the wheel a bit more. Nephele appeared around Bob’s side and gave everyone a nod. She’s a little pale as well. I look down towards the deck to see the crew moving frantically.

“Is this a-“

“Fear effect.” Bob finishes my sentence "But not a spell." he adds

I grab Nephele’s arm and cast Calm on her, the color goes back into her face and she looks more sound.

“Everything appears less urgent now.” She says

I tap Aton on the back and cast Calm on him as well. I see his grip lessen and he glances back to me.

“Thank you for that.” He looks to Bob “What do you advise?”

“As I said, I’m not familiar with islands like this. I’ve never seen one move.” He says then chuckles “I’d say go around it, but something tells me that won’t be possible. Simply head towards it, Captain.” Bob places a hand on the captain’s shoulder and I see him cast a spell

Was that Bless? That was probably Bless. I mean, he is a paladin, it makes sense that he knows that spell. Huh, I guess it just feels weird to see other people cast spells.

“Lady Ynnessa, if you could, please come with me.” He says to me before turning to Neph “Lady Nephele, guard the Captain.”

Nephele nods to him.

Me and Bob head down onto the deck and start walking towards the front of the ship. I don’t know why he needs me right now, something something magic probably.

“Do you understand what is occurring right now?” he asks me, grin on his face

“An attack?” I ask, glancing to him

“Not necessarily.” He says “That island is currently about the size of all Orcish lands combined. But. It is also currently expanding.” He says

“W-What?” I ask nervously

“Well, either expanding or getting closer, maybe both.” He places a hand on my back and crouches slightly and points forward “Look, the east and west sides of the island get bigger second by second and if your sight is true, you might be able to see the darkened waters near the land.” He says "None of which bodes well for us."

He’s….actually right….

The island looks like it’s getting bigger and I can see the darkened waters. But…

I also see something else.

“Did you spot it?” he asks

How the fuck are you so calm, my guy?

“Y-Yes.” I shakily reply

“Are you ready to fight the unknown enemy?” he asks me

“I don’t have much of a choice, do I?” I ask

“Hah!” he laughs “I’ve been looking forward to us fighting side by side!” he shouts

Now you might be thinking. What has you spooked? Just about ten or so “tentacles” flying under the water towards the ship. Also the fact that I have no knowledge of this island nor whatever the flying fuck is coming towards us.

Bob takes out his warhammer and taps it against the wooden deck. He takes a very deep breath.

“All hands on deck!” he shouts at full force

The crew around us start scrambling even more, all I can see is that Bob has a nice grin on his face.

“I’ve always wanted to say that.” He chuckles then glances to me “Do you have any ranged spells?” he asks me "I sadly lack the versatility."

I just nod with a look of concern. He's not wrong about the versatility thing.

“Perfect! That’s how we draw it close.” He says

What the fuck is he planning?

I just grip my staff and ready myself for whatever the fuck is about to happen.

From the greyish blue waters around the Daywalker seven large tentacles shoot out. They’re nothing like an octopus, I think threat of getting hetai'd would be better right now. I glance to the one closest to where I’m standing and see small moving hands on it. It’s like they’re trying to grab anything they can. Fucking creepy..

Without much thinking I aim my staff to the thing and fire off a Lightningbolt. It hits dead center which makes the thing fire itself towards me. The second its shadow appears on the ship I see Bob slam his warhammer into the thing taking it to the ground. A small indicator appears above the thing. It’s called a “Grabber” from the looks of it. Once again, fucking creepy...

I’m not surprised by the name, god that thing looks creepy as shit. I can see hundreds of small hands across it. Is it made up of them? What the fuck?

A few of the Grabbers return under the water while two throw themselves at the deck of the ship. I fire off another Lightningbolt to the one that Bob knocked down to the deck. There’s no health bar so this isn’t a boss.

I start hearing screams from the crew and look over to see one of the sailors being lifted up by one of the Grabbers. The small hands dig themselves into his flesh and tear him apart.

I’m going to fuck puke.

The ship suddenly speeds up making me lose my balance and get thrown back. I land straight into Bob’s chest. Thank Azura this man caught me.

“Fear not, Lady Ynnessa!” he says as he places me down “Spread your attention to the one injured.” He says

I look back to the Grabber that’s laying on the deck. It’s slowly started to get up, but I can see some remnants of my Lightningbolt. Is it weak to that?

I grab my staff with both hands and fire another Lightningbolt at the thing. Bob rushes past me and lunges forward bringing his Warhammer down on it. It’s still not dead, but it’s taken a good amount of damage.

Bob leaps back next to me and pats me on the shoulder, his hand glows and I feel a bit energized. Is that an Enhance spell?

“I-I’ll deal with this one, help the crew.” I tell him

“Are you certain?” he asks me

I just give him a nod which makes him smile.

“Abara, Voice of Truth, bless this tool to spread its faith.” Bob whispers to himself

A gold flame envelops the warhammer in his hands as he runs off to help the others.

Off topic but that was cool. Also 'spread its faith' plus violence. Bit funny.

Without wasting anymore seconds I fire off two more Lightningbolts at the Grabber which make it explode, leaving a charred shadow where it once was along with a bunch of chunks of whatever kind of flesh its made of. I’m lucky none of that got on me.

Lightning damage is doubled to them by my guess, alright, I can work with that.

I glance forward to see that we’re almost at the island. We’re being dragged there and I see more of those fucking things under the waters. I look back to the helm where I see Nephele standing ready with her bow drawn. Aton is trying to regain control of the wheel but it isn’t working out.

Goddammit what do I do?

The screams of the crew are getting more intense and I hear something akin to wood crack below deck. Are they trying to fucking sink us?

I just move towards Bob and assist him with my long ranged attacks. He’s good, but he’s got no range like he said, probably the only con to a paladin in this game.

These two Grabbers are bit more stronger and they’re even dodging a few of my attacks. Are they a hive mind? Makes me wonder because my aim isn't this shit.

I catch another glimpse of the nearing island and all I can say is that that land looks dead, like gray, the really bad kind. But I think the most important thing at the moment is to try and survive getting off this ship. Why is it that whenever I go on a ship something like this happens?

If I had a goddammed nickel for everytime a ship ride turned absolutely deadly I’d have two. That’s two too much!

A Grabber swings itself at Bob throwing him back behind me. I rush to him and quickly cast Heal. He jumps right back up. He probably has quadruple the health I have, but having more health is always a good thing.

“Get everyone to the helm. If we don’t reach the island we’ll all be dead.” He says

YEAH, NO SHIT!

“What are you going to do?” I ask

“Are you familiar with Tremorpoint?” he asks with a smirk

Oh no, please no no no, why would you try that?

I just give him a shaky nod.

“Then I need not explain.”

God fuck! Always the bad luck!

I tap him and cast Bronzeskin on him for some added buffs.

“To the helm!” Bob yells to his men and the remaining sailors

He bolts off with his warhammer and I lay down some more covering fire while everyone runs. Sailors and some of the mercenaries run past me as I continue shooting Lightningbolts, but the fuckers are managing to dodge most of them. Come on Ynn, don't fuck up my confidence..

I start moving back as well and from the looks of things Bob has them focused on him. I stop my barrage of Lightningbolts and head up to the helm with the others.

“What is he planning?” I hear Aton ask, obvious concern in his voice

“Um..Just be ready to fly...” Is all I tell him

Bob swings his warhammer at the Grabbers attacking him, they reel back as he does which prompts him to spin his hammer with one hand in the air. I see him start casting the spell. I quickly glance forward and we’re going to be forcefully sunk and made to crash in about thirty seconds if he doesn't cast the spell.

But on the basics of what Tremorpoint is. Well...

Imaging causing a small shockwave of sorts, but the thinner the ground the larger the shockwave and since Bob has the strength he has and is a paladin, he can control the shockwave. So...

Bob’s Warhammer lights up and he slams it down onto the deck with all his force. Everyone including me get violently thrown forward into the air over the Grabbers. I see Bob cast Leap and he jumps between the Grabbers up towards us. Now all of us are violently flying through the air.

I’m surprised at my calmness, this isn’t the first time I’ve been thrown into the air. I doubt it’s going to be the last considering my track record.

I finally have a view of the darkened waters. It’s…not a pretty sight. I can see the Grabbers under there, but I also see a bunch of sunken ships. It doesn’t look like we’re the first ones to be attacked. What the hell is this island?

And now we’re on the falling down in an arch part. But hey, I’ve got enough health to take some fall damage, right?

I should’ve bought a fucking spell for shit like this!

Right as we fly over the shore something changes in the air. I can feel it quite well.

My sight ripples slightly and my whole body starts to burn from the inside.

A sharp pain strikes my stomach, heart and center of my chest. I try to hold my stomach, but my arms are frozen in place. I feel like I’m getting stabbed through my body with a thousand fucking swords.

I feel something in my throat before I cough out blood. It's not a healthy amount...

I glance to my health to see it slowly going down.

I can’t focus enough to cast a healing spell.

I manage to glance over to my staff and see it crumble into dust.

What the hell is happening? Why can't I move? Even thinking is getting hard to do right now.

I look around myself to see none of the crew that I was in the air with literal seconds ago. I don’t see Nephele or Bob anywhere.

Hell, my vision is already shit right now, but I see one thing clearly.

Health 64/125

Health 53/125

Is this necro damage? Even if it was it shouldn't be this much. We're not in a high level area...

I feel something crawl around me, I feel like something's trying to tear me apart. The veins in my arms are blackening as well. My breathing is getting worse as well...

I don’t what the hell this is!

Come on, come on! Think! Think!

I can’t move and I don’t know where the fuck I am.

Azura…

Am I really going to bet my survival on a prayer to a god that doesn’t even know that I probably exist? I don’t have anything else right now. I'm....out of ideas....

I’m dying, I know that right.

Suddenly it feels like my body hit something hard and is tumbling with greater force. Looks like I hit the ground or something like it. Fuck, this pain is getting worse.

Health 21/125

Fuck....

How do you even do a prayer?

Azura, protector of Elves, harbinger of magic, most beautiful of all Elven gods, please, hear my words. Please....

Health 13/125

Please, I beg for your protection.

I don’t want to die...

I feel my body come to a stop. It looks like I’m laying somewhere. I can’t hear anything either. My vision is a mix of black and red. My mana and stamina are full, but my health…

Health 5/125

Azura, please, I beg you. I know you're an almost forgotten deity, I know your days of glory are far in the past of this world, but please. Help me, I’ll be your priest or whatever. I just don’t want to die…

Health 3/125

Please….

Health 2/125

I can’t even sigh to be disappointed with myself. Fuck me…

I guess I had a good run. Shame I only got to level 8. I wanted to do some cool shit. It's fucking sad. Hehe…

I was even starting to be more socially confident and being a hot babe wasn’t half bad. Can’t believe I’m going to die a virgin a second time…

Life ain’t fair….

I glance to that red bar for the last now I guess.

Health 1/125

I just feel everything slowly go dark.

I’m sorry…

I’m sorry that I wasn’t stronger…
