Chapter 217

The next few days passed by without anything of note. Ed had fallen into a routine, and thanks to his new phone, he was able to stay in contact with Zara even when he was working with the interns.

The internship was coming to an end, and Ed was feeling a bit nervous. He worried that Buddie would use this as a chance to push him down should he not perform perfectly.

As for the interns themselves, they had all adjusted to their work to varying degrees. Most of them completed their work without being punished, and were likely to be hired by the company. Albeit none of them had a sinner redeem themselves.

Roman and Mathew were like fish in water. They got through the work with frightening ease, never once getting punished or even hesitating. They were eager to complete their duties.

Masami and Jacob formed the next tier. They had always finished their work, once again never choosing the punishment for themselves. But they did hesitate a bit, and showed quite a bit of sympathy to their sinners.

And unlike the first two, they didn’t enjoy watching the sinners die. They weren’t doing this out of fun, only out of survival. All things considered, they had still adjusted well.

Belle was struggling with it all. Despite what she went through earlier, she still decided to take the punishment one more time throughout this period. She struggled to get through designing even a single trap, and Buddie had to force her eyes open so that she would watch the videos.

Ed realised that it was highly likely that Belle was going to die. While she hadn’t performed as badly as he did during his internship, she didn’t have the help of two managers to prop her up.

Ed could go and ask them for help to get her the job, but they had already helped him enough, and asking would just put a strain on their relationship.

After adjusting himself to the fact that she was going to die, Ed thought about what it would mean for him.

Would Buddie punish me for not doing things perfectly? Ed hoped that wasn’t the case, but he felt like something would happen. Checking the future wouldn’t help as there were just too many possibilities and not enough times.

Lying in bed, he had woken up before Buddie’s announcement and couldn’t get back to sleep. So he thought about all of this.

This round of internships were coming to an end, and today was the day that HR would decide who was going to be hired.

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

He was feeling nervous, but at this point, there was nothing he could do to change anything. He stayed in bed with his eyes closed, trying to rest a little in the short amount of time that he had.

“Good morning.”

Before he could fall asleep, Buddie’s voice rang through the room.

The two woke up, made breakfast, and readied themselves for the day just as they always would. But instead of being sent to check on his interns, or getting sent to the office, Ed was sent somewhere else.

He was sent into a long, well-lit hallway. There was plush carpet beneath his feet, a few paintings hung up along the walls that he didn’t know the origins of, and even some windows.

The windows looked out onto a verdant field that made one forget about all of the worries in their life. Ed felt tempted to try and smash the window and rush outside. But he knew that was stupid and impossible.

Turning on his fate vision, he could see that a bunch of other people had walked through here before him. There were several groups, probably totalling more than a hundred people.

The strings were all bunched up in the hallway, making it look very dense. Only a few deviated to explore the place making it difficult to distinguish one string from the other. It also made him somewhat dizzy just looking at all of the strings condensed into this small space.

But the feeling was nowhere near as bad as he had experienced out on the streets of Hell, so he quickly adjusted to it.

Most notably however, was that there was a bundle of strings walking with him, despite him seeing no one in the hallway with him.

The bundle of strings were familiar. They belonged to the healer that was in Masami’s room.

“Hello, what are you doing here?” he asked.

The room was silent for a moment, the healer not wanting to admit that they were there, but after seeing Ed staring directly at them, they spoke.

“Handing in reports,” a quiet voice stated simply. It was so short and quiet that it made Ed question if he had even heard anything at all. It was like a whisper from someone who hadn’t spoken in a long time.

“What kind of report?” he pressed on.

“Health and observations.”

Seeing that the person didn’t want to speak, Ed gave up on trying to get information and continued walking.

At the end of the hallway was a large door, reminiscent of the doors he would see on a school hall. The door was still wide open, meaning that whatever was going on hadn’t started yet.

Through the doors was a wide open hall filled with rows of chairs that all faced a stage. He turned off his string vision to make it easier on himself.

Entering the room, he could see that about half of the chairs were already full, meaning that he was most likely not the last person to show up.

Looking at the seats, he found that they didn’t have anyone’s names written on them, so he went and found a random seat in the middle, hoping to not stand out at all.

As time went on, more and more people filtered in, all coming in groups and filling up the seats. There were a few seats that looked empty, like the one next to him, but Ed guess that they were filled with healers.
