Chapter 8-The Giants

The candle burned through 8 in the morning at when Sear went back to Herj. The prior night he had gotten himself ready for this fight. He brought along his enchanted silver sword as it would greatly help him ruin the beast’s vision.

“I hope you remember how to do everything I showed you yesterday. This battle that is to come will be me testing your capabilities. If you manage to fight how I expect you too, I will begin teaching you more difficult spells.” Sear saw him cast spells on himself and suddenly he began running.

Sear had to begin running and casting at the same time to catch up. This would be his first time outside of the village. He ran after Herj and took a look at his surroundings. This large underground cavern looked to be much bigger than he expected. To support the weight of the ground above it, there were large pillars of rocks that went from ceiling to floor.

They looked more like giant stalactites that connected to the ground. There weren’t many, but they were each at least 150 meters in diameter at their thinnest point.

In the distance, Sear could see the one of the walls of the cavern. The only weird thing, was that this wall was covered in large holes and had gigantic stairs carved into it. When Herj said they would be hunting giants, he hadn’t realized what he had meant until now.

Each opening had to be at least 50 meters high and 25 meters wide. Sear couldn’t even think of being able to fight something that large.

Suddenly, Herj stopped and pulled Sear into a crevice in the ground. “Now we will wait. You will not be able to fight many. They usually go hunting alone, so once one separates enough, you will attack.

They took turns looking out of the crevice in order to see if any giant was coming. During Herj’s 3rd time, he motioned for Sear to look. He saw a humanoid figure coming out of the opening. It had roughly made pants from what seemed to be the hide of hundreds of animals.

It carried a large club made of stone and metal on its shoulder. He realized that a hit from something like that would kill him.

“What could be big enough to feed a tribe of things this big?” Sear couldn’t imagine the rest of the things that dwelled in this cave.

“This place is full on mutants. The giants are mutated humans who grew, the small person with me is from a tribe of mutated humans who grew smaller, there are even humans that have full red scales and are about 10 feet long.”

“Along with humans, many other animals other mutate, such as the 3 headed wolf you fought earlier. They come from a pack. Even bunnies here have mutated. One such is the Grul, a bunny that is about 5 meters tall. It can jump over both of us with ease, and it is considered a delicacy for giants.” Herj continued to stare at the giant while talking. “There are many other mutated animals, but that was just one. This entire area is full of crazy animals. But surprisingly, none know magic.”

Sear watched as the giant walked past him. The ground trembled as if the giant commanded it. Once it passed, Herj began to follow it. Behind him, Sear pushed down his fears.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They traveled for another 5 miles before coming to stop. The giant was busy stomping all over one of those 10 feet tall red humanoids. Herj screamed out loud, and the giant turned to face him.

“Go on now. Your fight has begun.” He pushed Sear out in the open and hid again. “Your fat head is ugly!” Herj screamed from behind a rock and he saw the giant visibly get angry. Sear swore he saw smoke coming out of the giant’s nose and head. He looked like an angry bull.

While they were massive, they apparently got angry at the smallest things.

Sear concentrated and cast his spells on himself. He unsheathed the silver sword and charged forward. In a blink of an eye, Sear had reached the giant’s Achilles heel and cut horizontally along it.

When his sword connected though, it felt as if he had hit solid rock. He hadn’t even left a scratch. The giant roared and swung downwards with his club. Sear ran and the giant missed by a breath.

Unfortunately, there was so much power behind the swing that when it hit the ground, Sear was pushed away by the shockwaves. He went tumbling into a nearby rock.

When he got up, he saw the destruction the giant could cause. His arm was bruised even though he hadn’t gotten hit. The ground around the impact had cracks sprayed outwards for meters upon meters. If he had gotten hit, he would have surely been hit.

He decided to stop using the sword and once again summoned a ball of dark energy. He used his previous day’s experience and straightened it out into a 10 meter blade. He rushed forward, and the giant swung down once more. This time, instead of dodging, Sear pirouetted between the giant’s feet and jumped upwards.

His magic allowed him to jump upwards towards the beast’s back. He slashed upwards with his momentum and left a large bleeding cut going from the giant’s butt to right below its shoulder blade.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

Before he fell, he grabbed onto the giants back and turned the sword into a cone shaped weapon. He stabbed his arm into the beast’s back, and he managed to pierce it. The giant roared and fell back, attempting to crush Sear under his back.

Sear saw this coming and jumped away from the falling giant. He hadn’t gotten smashed, but while he was in the air, the giant swatted with his arm and smacked Sear. He tried to use the cone of energy as a shield but it did not turn out well.

Instead, he went flying from the impact. The impact had hit his chest, so he got whiplash on his neck when he began to fly.

He crashed into one of the pillars and stayed there for a minute. The giant walked over and looked at his body. Sear could see stars flying around his head. Everything was blurry, and he could only hear muffles instead of the giant’s loud roar. He pulled himself out of the hole he was in and fell to the ground.

He got up and attempted to dodge the giant’s rampage. He got hit multiple times which only cause his to get slower and slower.

“Shit.” Sear realized he was going to die if this continued. He got up and sprinted away, putting some distance between him and the giant. He knew that it could traverse this distance in a matter of seconds but he didn’t think about it.

He made two smaller yet denser and more powerful swords for him to use. He put all of his magic into self enhancement and charged towards the lumbering monster.

He reached the giant’s left foot, and ran up it, slashing away at the same time. He jabbed and slashed away at its leg without stop, and by the time he reached its hip the leg looked like a piece of raw meat. He continued on through the giant’s chest, but began to run diagonally and zigzagging on it, for it was trying to smack it.

He felt all of his stamina vanish from within, and used one final leap of power to push himself towards the giant’s face. His ascent stopped directly at its eye level, and he threw the two swords into its eyes.

With a cry of pain, the beast smashed him towards the ground, and Sear felt like his life was on the edge of a cliff. With one last effort, he took control of the swords still attached to the giant’s eyes and forced them to explode, only making an even louder cry of pain come out from its throat.

With its eyesight gone, the giant began to throw itself at the ground. It kicked and punched anywhere it heard a noise. Sear stayed down and let himself recover a bit. He had lost a lot of blood, so he needed to heal himself.

He had learned the prior day that you could temporarily stop bleeding with magic. It would be dark, water, fire, even earth magic. Any of those could stop bleeding.

He healed all of his major wounds and took a look at himself. He was covered in several interchanging layers of dust, dirt, and blood. He stood once more, and summoned one last sword. He gripped I tightly while he limped over to the giant.

It was now on its knees and punching the ground. He charged towards it and jumped onto its back. It turned back though it couldn’t see and snarled at Sear. Sear hesitated for a second, but then ran forward, and with almost pin perfect precision stabbed the sword into its jugular.

A large spray of blood so strong that it pushed Sear back sprayed out, and the giant went limp. Sear fell onto his knees and finally rested. Without all of his magical self-enchantments, he felt all of the accumulated pain going through his body.

Herj walked towards him. “Well at least you are still alive. You killed it, but you did it such a dumb way.” Sear could do nothing but stare up with confusion. He couldn’t believe what he had just said. “You decided to get yourself injured by using melee. You are a magic user you moron. You could have very easily just sent a whirlwind of magic and killed it.”

“You still have much to learn.” Sear blacked out as Herj picked him up.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When Sear woke, they were still by the dead corpse. But somehow, his body was healed. Before he could ask, Herj explained.

“I took you to the village and had you healed, and then came back. You still need to kill one more.” With that he motioned over and Sear could see a giant stuck in a wall. Somehow, Herj had enough magic to keep it restrained.

“Good luck.” Herj released the giant and it reeled its head back with a shout of anger. It charged straight forward at Sear. This time, he took heed of Herj’s words and summoned a large ball of energy. He threw it forward at the giant at such speed that it was impossible to dodge.

The instant it touched the giant’s chest, the beast was pushed back by an explosion large enough to destroy a cities wall. It fell onto the ground and had severe 2nd and 3rd degree burns covering its entire body.

Sear fired another one, and the beast was killed. “Now that was much easier wasn’t it?” Herj was for some reason proud of himself. He began walking back to the town, and Sear followed like a stray dog.
