Chapter 26- Showing Off

A few hours later the sun came up. With dawn though, began the culmination of dark clouds slowly closing in on the city.

As people looked out of their windows and travelers peeked out of their caravans, the clouds seemed to speed up. In an hour, the city had a veil of clouds covering it. If someone were to climb upon the tallest building and look out into the horizon on all sides, they would see the continual darkness, and could hear faint lightning in the distance.

As this continued Sear was still shut away in his basement, unaware of all that was happening above him.

In a few minutes, the wind began to pick up. At first it was gentle, and carried a nice homely smell with it, but soon the gusts were blowing rocks and logs of wood around the town. Many of the homes being reconstructed collapsed as the supporting foundations were blow away.

Soon enough, even children and small adults were being slowly blown back. By now, the lightning had grown enraged, and every now and then a large strike would fly across the clouds before congealing in an area and shooting downwards.

Luckily, or unluckily, the lightning hit with such power that it didn’t cause any fire, because the area that was hit got vaporized.

Over in the camp, the men were quickly packing everything up before it got blown away and began to pile it all in an enclosure so that it wouldn’t get blown away. The men dashed to the nearby cave and hit. In Gut’s mind, only one word played out: “Sear…”

Back in the city, people were quickly being moving down into the cities catacombs to hide from the turmoil brewing in the sky.

Inside the mage’s tower, a meeting was taking place.

“What should we do? This storm seems to be just starting, and if it gets any worse we may die.” One voice spoke out before the entire room erupted into people talking.

            “We could all hide underground!”

“Use the wind mages to blow the storm away!”

“We should take the city, and push it somewhere else!”

Seeing that nothing was going to actually happen, most of the men left to go hide. But still, Sear was in his inner mind, toying away.

Soon, the rain began to come down. At first it was already bad. It felt more like a hurricane just came to them than anything else.

A an hour though, the water droplets had been less in numbers, but each one had to be at least 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) in diameter. Anyone they hit would squeal out in pain before running away, waiting for the bruises to come.

Along with the rain, some light hail would fall every now and then, either knocking people out, or destroying some of the houses. It was total mayhem, and nobody knew the cause for it.

Across the city people began crying out to the gods for forgiveness, while others struggled to find Sear to see if he could help.

Ok, done with that part of the mana. In total, 0.5% of my mana has been converted. Not bad, for a singular night.

Opening his eyes, Sear could immediately tell that something was wrong. Not only could he hear everything going on outside, but he could also feel a vortex of mana high in the sky.

What…what happened while I was meditating? Did I cause this accidentally? Hmmm… I think that there may be something controlling this storm by the way I sense the mana spreading through the clouds from a center point.

Walking outside, Sear quickly put up a wind barrier to stop anything from hitting him. Infusing himself, he quickly got to the catacomb entrance, where he knew everyone would be. He needed some answers.

Walking in, he soon came upon who he was looking for, Gee.

“Gee, what’s happened here?” Startled, some of the people took out their blades before seeing Sear and relaxing.

“We’re not sure. Since…” Sear listened to Gee talk about how the weather seemed to come from nowhere. “Do you know where it came from?”

Turning around, Sear began to walk away. “I think I have an idea, and I’m going to check it out. Looking at him with bewilderment of wanting to go back outside, they ran after him only to be greeted with the dust left behind.

After jumping upwards, Sear quickly used air magic to create solid pieces of air. Placing his foot on them, he pushed forward, running in the air.

In a minute, he was halfway top the clouds. Continuing on, he almost got struck down.

As soon as he passed a certain threshold, a large lightning bolt spiraled through the clouds before launching itself at him. He quickly put up a shield, but he was still pushed back quite a bit.

“Damn, whatever is controlling this sure knows what they are doing. Too bad it changes nothing.”

Smiling, he launched himself upwards once more. This time he was prepared, and once the lightning bolt struck he managed to deflect it towards his right.

Continuing upwards, he soon was struck by more bolts, while these were smaller, their sheer amount almost broke his shield. Pushing forward, he continued until he reached the clouds.

Realizing he could not see anything, he quickly dispersed the water particles around him.

In the end, it was a futile effort. Before he could even react, a serpentine like being made of lightning flew out of the clouds, barreling into him.

Watching as his shield was instantly ripped apart like paper, Sear began to see his life flash through him eyes. Whatever he had just tried going against, was much too strong for him.

Realizing he was about to die, he quickly used most of his magic to create a small shield covering his chest.

Even though the being still ripped through it, it visibly slowed. Slamming into Sear, he could do nothing but accept this. As he got hit, a large crunch was heard from the breaking of his ribs.

Almost going unconscious, Sear’s body got launched backwards at such a speed that he broke through the speed barrier, by a lot.

Feeling the strain this speed was putting on his body, he attempted to slow down. Looking around for the serpentine, he quickly jerked around just in time to see its body barrel into him again, this time breaking his left arm and shoulder.

One his already ribs poked out of his back, sticking out like a misplaced horn.

This is it, I’m actually going to die here… damn, to think there were still things this much more powerful than me that existed…

He watched as the being body once again turned towards him. This time though, instead of flying towards him off the bat, it slowly began to curl its body and pull back like a spring.

In seconds, the being had shrunk down to 1/10th of its size. Feeling killing intent coming off of it, Sear closed his eyes and waited for this final hit.

And it came. His body flew over the countryside, eventually passing though entire countries.

Over the continent, people spoke about this day being the beginning of the end. Many stated that the bright object flying to the skies was a message from the gods, and believed that their time was up.

The main reason for this was the fact that the city got wiped off the map. Not a single pebble was left. In its place was a large crater spanning a few kilometers. The nearby area was either blow to smithereens by the wind that followed the strike or was still on fire.

Panic broke out across the continent of Gruflumlor as people began to kill each other for food and hide. Soon, most of the continent was in hiding, waiting for the final day.

Across the continent, the bright streak in the sky landed in the middle of the ocean, waiting to be swept away from anything that it knew.
