Chapter 5

The crowd gasped as Goku collapsed from what seemed to be a sudden illness. Superman quickly jumped up from his chair, catching Goku before he hit the ground. Livewire, the commentator, rushed over to check on him. "What happened? Is he okay?" she asked, her voice laced with concern. Superman carefully laid Goku down on the ground and began to examine him. "It looks like he just overdid it a bit," he said, feeling for a pulse. "His body couldn't handle all those hot dogs." Superman felt slightly guilty for lying to Livewire but he'd rather apologize later when he told the truth later. What Superman saw shocked him to his core and caused shivers to go up his spine. All of Goku's cells were vibrating out of sync with each other. This would result in a total collapse of his cellular integrity and cause him to become a slurry.

Superman tapped something on his belt and began thinking [J'onn, I have a medical emergency, can you teleport us to Star Labs immediately?] The response was instant and professional. [Of course, please hold.] Superman smiled warmly at Livewire and calmly stated "Don't worry, I'm just taking him to Star Labs, he'll be fine." The look of worry vanished and was replaced by momentary confusion and then shifted to relief. She turned to the anxious crowd and cried out "Don't worry fol-" Whatever she continued saying Superman is unsure as he and Goku were instantly moved to a medical bay deep in Star Labs. [Thanks J'onn, can you also bring Flash? I could use his expertise.] Without waiting for the affirmative, Superman moved Goku to a bed. Superman quickly took in his surroundings, it was a sterile medical bay with beds and other medical instruments both mundane and esoteric. One door led to an operating room that Superman hoped was going to go unused. The other led to the hallways within Star Labs, and the object of Superman's search; the communications screen.

The second Superman approached, the screen lit up and a bored looking woman in her 60s appeared. "What is the-" she cut herself off with a gasp. "Superman! What are yo-No, never mind that. What can we do?" Superman appreciated the switch from shock to professionalism "I have someone in need of immediate medical aid, symptoms are convulsions, possible seizure, overeating, and their cells are vibrating out of sync with each other. I can fetch your doctor faster than they can run here. Where are they?" The operator began typing furiously and pulled a loose strand of hair from her face. "You'll want Doctor Fett in G771 and Professor Hart in the Lecture Hall." After nodding his thanks, he raced through the complex quickly finding Dr. Fett and zipped to the Lecture Hall and snagged Professor Hart.

The pair was bewildered as they ended up in one of the emergency medical bays standing in front of Superman. Their shock passed slower than anyone would have liked but they were Star Labs employees. They knew how to disregard shock and do what needs to be done. After relaying the requested information, the doctors go right to work looking over Goku who was still convulsing. [Superman, I'm at the front gate, I'll be the-] and with a blur of red, the Flash had entered the room [-re soon.] The Flash was a man wearing a full body red suit with gold embellishments and a smile. "Sorry I'm late, Captain Cold froze a highway and I had to not spin out. What's the problem?" The Flash and Superman went to the side of the bed the doctors were not on. "I'm not a doctor so I... whoa. What is going on here...?" Superman relayed what he could see and Flash agreed. "It's like he's used to a different cosmic frequency. What do you know about him?" Before Superman could answer Professor Hart yelled out "Is he?! I need to take measurements right now!" and rushed to a cabinet, her pink lab coat fluttering behind her.

"To answer your question, I don't know much beyond he's an alien and apparently vibrating out of tune with us." The Flash hummed to himself, going rapidly to the various cabinets and checking out Goku with different tools. Professor Hart pulled her red hair back into a bun and held a small rod up against Goku's chest. The Professor and The Flash began to speak hurriedly to each, leaving Doctor Fett to speak to Superman. The unwashed scientist smoothed back some hair and adjusted his glasses. "Superman, I need you to get several chemicals from my lab. I don't want to interrupt these two as they are handling that side of the problem." Having already been to his office, Superman knows exactly where to go, after getting the list of chemicals, Superman returns to Doctor Fett setting up an IV drip. "Good. Nick of time. Set them there" he stated pointing at a small table nearby. He turned back to Professor Hart and The Flash talking about Harmonics and Resonance. Not wanting to stop the flow of ideas and possible fixes he asks Doctor Fett "Is there anything else I can do?" Doctor Fett grunts in surprise but doesn't turn from his work. "Eh! No. Not from me. Just stay out of my hair please and thank you."

Superman let some tension out of his shoulders. Goku is in the perfect hands now. Nothing more to do than step back and wait. Well, that would be the course of action for anyone but Superman, but duty calls. Well, specifically it was many people screaming for help because of their train not stopping, but close enough for him. He takes a moment to state the fact he will return and exits the labs at great speeds. Stopping a train is no big deal for the man of steel so he returns to the park where the crowd is chowing down on the surplus hot dogs. Someone in the crowd looked up and pointed "It's a bird!" Another tries correcting them "It's a plane!" Livewire gets back on the mic and yells out "IT'S SUPERMANNNNN!"

The crowd goes utterly ballistic at this point, hot dogs are hurled, people start stampeding towards Superman, each asking a question that any ordinary person would struggle to pick out. "Is Goku ok?" "Did you really eat fewer hot dogs?" "Where is my son?" "I'm going to eat this hot dog!" and more. Superman waves for calm and the crowd quiets almost instantly. He begins pointing at people and answering their questions in order of importance. As their questions are answered the crowd slowly disperses from huddling around Superman. Superman doesn't get tired, he answers each question with the same level of enthusiasm as the last. Once the mob has gotten their fill of Superman, they all go back to what they were doing before he showed up: eating up all the hot dogs. Without a crowd in her way, Livewire steps right to the "Boy Scout. How is our winner?" Having a measure of privacy from too many ears, he quietly answers. "Unsure. His cells were vibrating apart when he collapsed, but there are two specialists and The Flash trying to take care of him."

Livewire knew better than to sag with relief, so she didn't. She still sighed audibly though. She would allow herself that much at least. "Ok. Good. Well you got my number, Blue. Keep me posted." With a punch to his arm, she went back into the crowd. The rest of the day passed in a blur of interviews and autographs. Superman was happy to meet so many enthusiastic fans, but he couldn't help feeling a little worried as well. He would check in with J'onn occasionally but there were no notable changes. As the sun began to set, Superman made his way back to his home feeling exhausted but content. He had done his best today, and that was all he could ask for. He filled Lois and Jonathan in on his day over dinner (which he ended up eating very little of). As he settled into bed, he couldn't help but think of Goku, and how he had pushed himself to the limit just for the sake of having fun. It was a lesson that Superman would never forget. No matter how powerful he was, he would always have something to learn from those around him.
