Chapter 7: Magic Books - Dungeon level 2

I was left enamoured by the heaps and piles of magic books that were at the shed. Among the interesting elements were as the aforementioned space time magic and a peculiar one called dark magic. It really piqued my curiosity. However I didn’t want to stand there and read the books and make Accel wait for me. Therefore I just bought a bunch of it and brought it back with me to the inn. The magic books were extremely steeped in detail, unlike the ones at the library which were more breadth-heavy. The magic books that I actually bought was exceeding my expectations. They taught everything there was to know about those element of magic. From incantation to casting to combination, they covered them all.

I was really pleased with my purchase, that I let out a huge smile. Accel was happy for me too. I couldn’t wait to dive into the books. Meanwhile Accel excused himself to earn back the money for the sword and shield. He was to go back to the forest where I came from which is two hours from here to hunt slimes. I wished him good luck and went back to my intensive study.

In the space time magic spell book, there was a complex walls of texts that were in plain English but they might as well have been in another language because it was tremendously hard to read. The text excerpt follows: Space-time magic is one of the pinnacle of elements of magic casting today. By manipulating space and time you can gain an overwhelming advantage over your opponents. However they will take up a huge amount of mana that will likely deplete your entire mana pool. Therefore you should only use them when you are in dire straits. Space time magic is not without its drawbacks, just like with another other magic, there’s cost involved in using such advanced skills. The cost of using space time magic is disorientation and confusion, it will happen after you have been transported into a new space time horizon. Therefore use with care.

That was just the first page of the space time magic spell book, already it was inundated with more complex terms in the pages ahead. However I was not one to just give up in the face of adversity. If anything the difficulty made me work even harder to get what I want. Which is the mastery of magic. Therefore I would spend the next few hours pouring over the books, and even when Accel has returned, finished his dinner and went to bed. I was still up in my room diligently studying. Hard work will outperform talent when talent fails to work hard. That was one of my guiding principles in life to work as hard as possible.

No matter what the naysayers have to say, I always have moved forward regardless of their doubts or insults. Their words mean nothing to me as I continued to climb higher and higher in my past life. As a prince I did my duties accordingly and even benefited the poor and homeless in our society. Everyone liked and admired me for the person I am not the person I was going to be. And the few detractors that got in my way? I did not pay any heed to them. Such was my magnanimity and generosity. In fact, I treated my haters with kindness and respect that every human deserves.

I could even recall a time when I went to the very outskirts of the city. Where I went to a peasant village and they were having troubles with their water supply for months on end. They had to drink dirty water due to the lack of sanitation facilities as their machines had broken down. I came in and saved the day by repairing their machines and giving them all fresh water in the meantime while repairing them. It was by no surprise our approval ratings shot through the roof after news of the good deed spread like wildfire. First from the outer cities then to the inner cities. Everyone knew about Edward the IV kind deeds and generosity. The King which was my father had a much easier time ruling over the kingdom after that one act. It was however nothing special to me and something that I had always done and will do in retrospect. Because everyone regardless of their background and social status, deserves to live in dignity and not in poverty. It is really a shame that I could have inherited one of the best kingdoms in the world. But now I am here, hunch over as a nobody, learning magic spells from books. The contrast could not be more stark.

Even to this day, six months since I was reincarnated in the most dangerous dungeon, I never give up finding my way back to my original life. If there was even a one percent chance of going back, I would do it in a heartbeat. But now there was no guarantee of that ever happening. That is the risk that I am undertaking. I will be putting my life at stake for a chance that might never come. But that was better than staying idle and in level one of the dungeon for the rest of my life. Actually thinking back, that might not be so bad with Azel and the old man as my company.

It really makes me nostalgic thinking of past events. I shed a tear as I eventually bawl out crying. I missed my old friends and would do anything in this world to get back with them. Thus I delved even deeper into the magic book of time space magic, hoping to find a needle in this mountainous heap of information deluge. Accel peak open the door and decided not to disturb me, it was already half past three at that point. And I was ready to go to bed. I put aside the dark magic books and save it for later.

The next morning, I wake up to the smell of pancakes and waffles being cooked. They smelled incredible. I walk downstairs and found the dining table full of food and Accel was already eating without me.

“Hey! Why did you not wake me up?”

“Well that’s because I wanted all the food to myself.” Accel joked.

I did not know Accel very much so I asked him lots of questions over breakfast. I need to know him as a person before I can proceed any further. Accel was an open book, he was totally the opposite of someone who was reluctant to divulge his deepest secrets. He told me about his adventures in the upper levels and the trials and tribulations it took to get here. He must have had a bad time, Edward thought. Accel told me about his battles with orcs, zombies and even dragons in the upper floors. At least I know what to expect now. No wonder his sword and shield became so brittle, it is little surprise knowing the difficulty he had faced in the upper floors. I asked Accel if there is any known way of going back to my past life and he shrug his shoulders but he said anyone who reached the hundredth floor will get any one wish granted. That was enough to get me going. I was so happy to know such a method exists, I shake Accel’s hands vigorously.

“I am going to do whatever it takes to reach level hundred. Even if it cost me the rest of my life.” I promised Accel.

Accel nodded his head, “As you wish! I will follow you wherever you choose to go.”

And with that we set our eyes on the next boss. The journey there was not easy, we had to traverse through mountains and even a lake. Luckily the latter of which had a giant bridge for us to cross. But along the way we battled various monsters, like the fish monster at the bottom of the lake. It was ginormous and was more powerful than the slimes but Accel made quick work of it before I could even cast my fire rain spell.

Then we would come to an open field where there was nothing around, not even grass patches.

“This is the place that we have to be.” Accel beckons.

“Are you sure? I can see nothing here.” Edward replied.

They would go back and forth until a rumbling can be heard from afar. It was not clear where the sound was coming from exactly. But Edward looked up and saw a giant Slime hurling towards them.

“Scatter!” Edward cried in alarm.

They swiftly pulled out of the area as the giant Slime landed with a massive thud and a hole in the ground. There, they came face to face with the biggest slime they had ever seen in this level or their lives. It was at least thirty meters tall.
