"I will break all the star,
if it means you'll smile again."
----------------------------------------
“Good morning and good night.” A voice whispered to me.
“Great... even in my dreams I can’t catch a break.” I thought to myself.
“It’s time to wake up and go to sleep.”
“Fine, I’ll get up,” I said to no one. I then looked around to see who was talking.
“I’m right here.” It said while I felt a tapping on my left shoulder.
I turn around to see that there is nothing behind me. “Who’s there?” I questioned the voice.
“Only you.” It replied from the opposite direction of my view.
“But I’m not talking!“
I heard a sarcastic voice respond, “You’ve gone insane.”
“This isn’t enough to drive me crazy. Is it?“
“You’ve got company.”
“Who are you!?” I shouted, but the voice left. I looked around to see if there was any trace of my visitor. There was something off about that voice... It reminded me of something I can’t quite describe. It was scary but soothing. Something you would never forget but can’t remember, like lyrics to a song. “Where have I heard that voice?” I muttered to myself.
The door started making noise. I turned towards the door with anticipation. “It must be that time,” I whispered. Silver used to come around once or twice a day to take care of me. Sometimes to play or tell me a story. Some were good like the Knight of Peony, and some were bad like Mein Konpf. That was before I bit him.
“Look who’s up today and chatty.” A voice said as it entered my cell. I recognized the voice; it was Silver.
I couldn’t have been happier. It had been so long since Silver had visited me. Since anybody has visited me, it’s been hard since I got here.
He knelt down over me and said, “guess what?”
“Sswaa?” A mixture of words and whistling came from my mouth.
He then wrapped his arm around my waist and bottom to lift me up. “You’ll be able to leave this awful place.”
I couldn’t help but smile and chirp with glee. Now I am not confined to a small dark room, I could leave and be with other people… Well Silver, since he’s the only person I know. I’m just glad I will not be alone now. But something felt off, “Why go to all of this trouble catching me and locking me up if it was just to set me free–”
My train of thought interrupted when Silver started moving towards the exit. I instinctually clung on and tightened my grip around his shirt with my hands. My legs wrapped around his upper body like a monkey’s tail on a tree branch.

“Sorry, did I scare you?” He asked.
I was too nervous to talk to him. I looked down to see how high I was; it didn’t make me feel better. It looked like I was hanging from a skyscraper. There was no end in sight. I then hid my face against him to prevent me from looking down. In return, I felt a warm, tight grip around my body. It took me a second to register this feeling before I slightly looked up at Silver.
“Is this better?” He asked with a gentle smile.
I didn’t respond to his question. Instead, I placed my face back into a hiding position.
“It’s all right.” Silver said, holding me tightly.
I felt the warm rays of the sun on my back, which told me I was outside. “Why am I afraid of heights?” I thought. I wasn’t this scared of heights in my other life. “Maybe it’s because of this new body. It wasn’t me before I was me. Well, technically this is me before I was me. But if it was me before I was me and I was me before it was me. Then which one is the real me?” My brain, now confused by the paradox I created. “Are either of them me? What if my last life was a dream, and I’ve always been this? Does that still make me... me? But what if life is a dream, and I’m in the hospital stuck in a coma? This is all too real to be a dream? Who am I? Am I me... or am I someone else? I don’t want to be someone else! I want to be me!”
“Does that really matter?” The voice from earlier came back but was now in my mind.
“Yes, it does!” I responded. “What if this person had a family? What if this was someone else before me!? What if they had their own soul? Did I kill them when I appeared? What am I? I know I said I wanted a new life, but what if that meant killing someone else instead?”
“I’m hearing a lot of what-ifs. What if you’re wrong? What is a soul? Do they exist?”
“Yes?” I hesitantly responded. I was unsure of myself.
“Have you ever seen one?” Questioned the voice.
“No.”
“Then how do you know it exists then? Do you even have proof that you existed before this? Maybe you’re suffering from short-term memory loss. Maybe this is who you always were? Have you thought about that? No. Do you understand?”
“Ye–”
The voice interrupted me, “No, I don’t think you do. Let’s say I am your ‘guardian angel’... Suppose I am who I claim to be. Are you even certain that you’re yourself? If you fall apart like broken glass before you even try. What will you become?”
“What are you? Some kind of terrible poet?”
“Bitch, I could be.”
“You don’t have to be a dick about it.” I snarled at the voice.
“Sorry,” It said, rubbing my shoulders, “I don’t mean to hurt you. I’m just trying to help.”
“Help who? Your poems are so bad they killed half of my brain cells. Are you trying to kill me?”
“Oh no,” The voice chuckled. “If you die… That would be problematic for both me and you.” The voice changed the subject, “anyway, do you feel better now?”
“No, I can’t even remember anything before that–” my thought conversation was interrupted by the sound of a girl’s voice.
“She’s so cute!” The girl shouted as she poked my back. She got closer to me, to where I could feel her breathing on me.
“So annoying. Why can’t they leave me alone?” I thought to myself, then I head-butted her. THWACK!! I heard the annoying girl falling.
“I guess she doesn’t like you, Fala.” Silver chuckled.
“Mmuuuu...”, Fala rubs her head and looks up to reveal a nasty bruise. “Maybe... she’s... jus... just tired...”
“Sure... anyway, do you have the items?” Silver asked the annoying girl.
“Yeah... They’re on your... your... bed.” Fala groaned, still rubbing and rubbing her head.
“You should probably get some rest.” He then smiled and said, “See you in a bit!”, closing the door behind him.
