Chapter 206: The Underhanded Competitor (2)

Near the end of the fourth day of the tournament.

Only Kai and Yoko were present and all the others in the loser's bracket had left. Kai still had his match held later and Yoko was the one waiting for him.

He felt the soul of the frail-looking man but there was something different about it as if it was contaminated by something else. The soul had the same fluctuations as the angel working for the Soul Thief, this confirmed Kai's suspicions even further. Now, he was certain that somehow, the Soul Thief found an angel's corpse which had a little remnant of its soul left.

Then he used many other souls to find a compatible one and ended up with a soul mixed with several others. If he had such an amazing skill, why hadn't he used it in his past life? The number of people who died in the war was countless and it wasn't just limited to humans—corpses of angels and demons could be found as easily as leaves.

Kai could somehow feel that the angel had become stronger than when it was alive but now that he saw the frail-looking man had his soul mixed as well, his power was way more than what the others could handle right now. Perhaps other than Sachiko and Amelia who weren't participating, only Kai, Yoko, and Erina were capable of defeating him.

If Yoko hadn't awakened her innate ability, then even she wouldn't be a match.

"This is the perfect opportunity."

Kai muttered with a smirk.

Perhaps if the Soul Thief knew that Kai had a spirit with him that was practically a soul, he wouldn't do something so reckless as sent a person with an altered soul to the tournament.

Yoko who was right beside him heard him and raised her brow. They were both under their mask but just by Kai's tone, she could tell that he was going to screw someone over.

"[Conceal]."

All of a sudden, under Yoko's gaze, Kai vanished.

"Eh...?"

She looked around but there was no sign of Kai anywhere.

"Eeeek!"

All of a sudden, Yoko shrieked causing the other competitors in the area to look over at her in surprise.

"You don't have to be that surprised... That was the girliest voice I've ever heard you make though, it was actually kind of cute."

Hearing Kai's voice made it apparent to Yoko that he was the one who tapped her shoulder so suddenly. She coughed awkwardly and all of the other competitors looked away. Perhaps if it was before, they'd have made fun of her but other than Kai's group and the Blind Swordsman, everybody was afraid of her.

Although they gave her strange looks, none of them dared to even utter a peep.

"D-don't scare me like that..."

Yoko was embarrassed but hearing Kai call her cute made her smile uncontrollably. If the mask wasn't on, she'd probably have died of shame. Of course, Kai could see through her mask but he didn't want her to know that.

"I'll be back."

Using his abilities, Kai sneaked to the tournament staff's place and changed the matches. Not to mention that it was written on paper, even if it was carved into stone, Kai could change it as easily as waving his hand.

But that was only natural. If a person were to be able to slay dragons over fifteen meters high, break through the walls of houses for an entire kilometer yet come out almost unscathed, and teleport from one continent to another were to say that they aren't able to change words written on paper would be a joke.

Kai switched Damon's opponent with his and vice versa. Perhaps the tournament staff might find it a bit weird but he didn't care. But, even if they did find out the change and switch it back, Kai could always take care of the Damon after the fight is over.

Once he finished with that, he headed back to Yoko and once more gave her a scare before revealing himself. When the other competitors saw Kai appear out of nowhere, they were shocked, to say the least. None of them were paying any attention to him before when he disappeared but this time, he reappeared right after they looked at Yoko.

"...You bully."

Yoko looked at Kai with an aggrieved expression.

"..."

Kai neither responded or reacted to her words but he continued staring at Yoko causing her to blush even more. When he finally turned his head away, he suddenly remembered Heliana. Although Kai did hold some feelings for her, it wasn't as much as he felt for Erina and Amelia where he had to have her at all costs. Right now, the situation with Yoko was the same as her.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

Though, he felt that if it were some other person who was in his position—he'd have chosen all the girls who were close enough with him. But, if he did that, then he'd have at least six girls. Neither did Kai feel that he had the stamina nor the patience to deal with that many girls at once.

Perhaps if things were a little more carefree, if he didn't have to save the world from the hero or the war between Gods and Demons then there might be a slight possibility.

Thinking of such stupid thoughts, Kai shrugged his shoulders and turned to inspect the soul. This was the first time that he had been in such close range, the person had just entered the room after all.

Inside, he was conversing with Reo while inspecting the soul. It would be better if Reo were sent outside to inspect the soul personally but he felt that people the Soul Thief has altered would be more than capable of sensing a spirit. Like at the time with Fate, Kai didn't want to reveal the existence of Reo so easily.

He was Kai's trump card, someone who could boost Kai's magic power in an instant to turn the tides of battle.

Well, even if he were to disappear after he drops out from the tournament, nobody would care.

As Kai decided to kidnap the man after defeating him—something that no normal person would consider, he waited for his match.

...

Later that night, Kai was in the illusion world with an unconscious Damon.

"I see..."

Reo went around inspecting Damon closely while Kai was exerting some of his own soul's fluctuations to check for differences.

"It appears that this is a fusion of ten—no, it's more like five souls since, with the exception of the main soul, all of them are damaged. It looks like the Soul Thief hasn't yet truly mastered how to control souls."

Kai looked over at Damon as he listened to Reo's explanations.

"This guy's magic power jumped from A-class to S-class, you aren't telling me that magic power also relies on the soul, right?"

If that was the case, then Kai wouldn't be at S-class right now, he'd be at SSS-class.

"No, it isn't. Magic power is related to its connection with the astral body while the soul is something that can only hold willpower and emotions. But, this one has truly increased his magic power..."

Even Reo didn't have an answer. Spirits were beings that had soul-like bodies but in the end, they were related to the elements.

As Kai furrowed his brows, he suddenly had a terrifying thought.

"Reo, this is just a possibility but..." Kai had a solemn expression on his face, "is the astral body linked to the body itself?"

Reo turned to Kai.

"Well, I wouldn't say that it isn't but... I suppose a part of it is and the other part is linked to the... soul!"

As Reo continued his explanation, he realized what Kai was talking about.

"But that would mean this one body has a connection to several astral bodies! That would mean several sources of mana and several attributes!"

It wasn't that frightening if two E-class were to be combined but what if two S-class, three S-class, or any higher number of them were to be mixed, what would happen?!

"That freak really knows how to cause trouble..."

Kai sighed.

It was frightening enough that the Soul Thief had gotten the corpse of an angel and it was capable of creating Eternal Frost, now they even had to worry about what other powers it could've been hiding. Kai wasn't worried about the several sources of mana as he was confident that even if there were a hundred of those souls, his mana wouldn't run out. He was worried that the angel could even be hiding a power that can threaten even him who was a Pseudo-Immortal.

"I guess I can't let Erina and the others deal with it until I figure out what kind of powers it has. That's the initial plan down the drain."

Saying so, a notebook manifested in Kai's hands. He didn't need to tap the pendant, he owned this world after all. He could do anything he wanted as long as it doesn't interfere with reality that much.

"Reo, can I leave it to you?"

Although Kai didn't tell Reo what he meant, the latter understood and quickly nodded.

"Leave it to me. I'll find a way to separate the souls. I don't think I'll be finished before the tournament ends though so you won't be able to use my powers against the Blind Swordsman."

Kai nodded.

"Your involvement was just a backup plan after all. I can't let that damn hero know about your abilities yet."

He had said that no matter what, he wouldn't be able to kill the Blind Swordsman, he wasn't exaggerating.

"Even if I do kill that bastard, he would just be revived at the hero's side and inform him of my powers. And..."

Kai waved his hand and the Supreme Being Medallion manifested.

"This is what they're looking for."

Reo looked over at the medallion, he was insanely shocked when he first laid his eyes on it because a Supreme Being was someone who even Gods were subservient too. Even if one only had the potential of a Supreme Being, it would be enough to command fear upon the hearts of many.

But, as he's been with Kai over the years, he felt that in the end, they were just candidates.

"Why do you say that?"

Kai raised the medallion into the air and inserted his mana into it. The entire world began to tremble as if it would break apart at any moment. The mountains were being destroyed, the ground was splitting apart, the clouds were dispersed, and many other disasters sprouted.

"What is happening?!"

Even though Reo questioned him, Kai poured even more mana into the medallion until it began to glow. That resplendent glow turned into several beams of light that shot out into different directions but before they could get very far, Kai stopped inserting his mana and it dispersed.

Reo looked over at the medallion in shock, never had Kai told him nor did he know about that function.

"This medallion has two purposes. One, to serve as an identification that one has the potential to become a Supreme Being, they are linked with our very lives. And two, to find the other candidates."

"You're telling me that those beams of light it shot out would've led us to the other candidates?!"

Kai nodded.

"The hero is strong, he's at the level of both the King of Gods and the Devil. If given a few more decades, he would surpass their power completely. But, he isn't able to become a Supreme Being."

After that explanation, Reo could understand what Kai was saying.

"That means that whoever is destined to defeat him has to be a Supreme Being candidate!" Reo exclaimed.

"That's right. But, that hero has got one thing wrong. We're candidates of Supreme Beings for a reason."

The medallion disappeared from Kai's hand and his mana surged. He spoke slowly but each of his words was filled with domineering might.

"We've been chosen as candidates to surpass Gods for a reason. And, I'll show him that reason when I punch that composed look off his face."
