Episode 48: Spark

Koji

This is a joke, right?

Right?

My mind flashes back just to less than an hour ago.

[Quest - Train a Magician! (Part Five)]

[Carmen has chosen you to be her mentor! Train her to be a magician. She has learned about elemental mana forms, magic formation, magic history, and has seen magic used in and out of combat situations. Choose one of your spells and teach it to her!]

[To teach a magic spell, both the person teaching and the person learning the spell must first clear their minds. A quiet room for meditating is ideal. The teacher should grasp both hands of the student, then cast the spell without a target. By grasping hands, the mana flow of individuals is naturally intertwined, which allows a student to observe and experience the spell casting process. The mana cost required for the spell is spent from both teacher and student. Depending on the complexity of the spell being taught and the aptitude of teacher and student, multiple training sessions may be required.]

[WARNING! Both student and teacher will be affected by an augmented version of the spell being taught. Damage and/or death may result from teaching offensive spells without adequate precautions.]

[Reward: 1x Advanced Spell Credit]

An advanced spell credit?!?

Isn't that extremely rare?

During this process of teaching Carmen, this is the first time that I've actually seen a method of teaching magic to a beginner. Grimoires and magical academies exist, and some advanced mages can even create their own spells... but none of those methods have any effect for beginners. Reading books does nothing. Leveling up does nothing. Practicing the same spell over and over again doesn't unlock any spells. And the road seems blocked. You have to have at least an intermediate class to be accepted into a magical academy (they do have a "preparation training course" that costs an extreme amount...), and grimoires can only be read by someone with an advanced class.

It looks like this hand-holding-combination-casting method works for beginners! Which means that I can learn new spells, right?

I don't know what an Advanced Spell Credit is, but my guess is that it will make it possible for me to learn an advanced spell...

Who knows? Maybe I can even learn one from a grimoire!

I turn to Carmen.

Koji: "Are you ready to learn your first magic spell, Carmen? This is the last step in becoming a magician."

Carmen nods her head.

Koji: "Ok. It looks like we need to go someplace quiet. And..."

I realize something.

Carmen has only one hit point.

Magic spark can be used in many ways, but sometimes it's an offensive spell. And even one hit from the weakest offensive spell will kill her. If I cast magic spark without a target, I have no control... which means that I almost just killed my apprentice with my enthusiasm.

We're near the library right now, and there are a couple of magic shops on the same street. Magic items are expensive, but it doesn't look like I have many options right now. Especially if I want to learn my first spell!

Koji: "We have to go buy something first. Then we'll go to a practice room at a guild hall and I'll teach you magic spark!"

Carmen: "Ok!"

I explain the dilemma to the magic shop owner, who listens while nodding his head knowingly.

Owner: "Usually, I would suggest an amulet of protection that reduces the effect of harmful magic. But in this case, an amulet of protection won't work, since the spell may still cause damage. In this case, I would suggest an amulet of spell deflection. They are more expensive, but will deflect any harmful magic until they break."

Koji: "Do they break often?"

Owner: "Sometimes you can deflect two or three spells with an amulet. I've heard that once an amulet deflected spells 5 or 6 times. It's random, but most will break after deflecting the first spell. They also will break on their own after a while by just being worn - a customer once told me it was because they are affected by 'winds of mana' or something - but that's why people don't wear them for battles. They are mostly used by research mages who don't want to be blown up by a powerful new spell or magic device. They put the amulet on right before activation."

So it's literally a one-time use consumable item.

Koji: "How much is an amulet of spell deflection?"

---

Less than ten minutes later we are in a practice room in the basement of a random guild hall. I explained the situation to the receptionist and she gladly let us borrow the room.

Koji: "You ready?"

Carmen: "Yeah. I just have to close my eyes and try to clear my mind, right?"

She seems mature for a little kid.

Carmen: "Sister Maribel taught us to meditate at the church - is it like that?"

Koji: "It's exactly like that!"

Carmen: "I'm good at meditation! Once I even fell asleep!"

Well.

Not sure if that counts, but at least she'll be relaxed, right?

I open the tiny, black, velvet-covered box in my hands and look inside. There, in a small central impression on a velvet pillow, is a tiny amulet on a thin chain.

An amulet of spell deflection. I confirmed its identity at two separate magic shops, after also checking to see if anyone sold them at a lower price.

This thing better be worth it. I have never spent so much money in my life.

I clasp the amulet around Carmen's neck, then sit down across the table from her and clasp both her hands in mine. I clear my mind, and then cast magic spark.

I feel a jolt and a slight burst of pain in my hands.

"Oh!"

Carmen says something, but she's still alive. And the amulet hasn't broken yet.

I check the quest screen. It hasn't been completed, which means we need to do another try. How many times is this going to take? I can't afford another amulet... and I don't know another way to protect Carmen from damage...

I clear my mind again. Quiet thoughts. I don't have time since the amulet could break on its own.

No.

Stop thinking about that.

I clear my mind and cast magic spark.

An electric sensation brushes across the back of my hand.

*ding*

I open my eyes and only glance at the [Quest Complete] before reaching over to Carmen. I unclasp the priceless amulet from her neck and place it back into its expensive box, then place the box into my inventory (the shopkeeper warned that inventories can damage the amulet, but there's no way I'm going to hold it in my hand forever, and it fulfilled its purpose) before looking back up.

Carmen is beaming.

Carmen: "Koji! I think something happened!"

Carmen flips the screen she's looking at to show me. Some screens can be shared with others that are nearby, and others can't. I haven't figured out the rules behind that yet.

[Congratulations! You have unlocked a new class!]

[Class: Beginner Magician]

[The Beginner Magician understands the basics of mana, magic formation, magic history, magic usage, and has learned at least one spell. This class focuses on INT and WIS, and allows the usage of either wand or staff as a magical focus.]

[Choose Class: Beginner Magician?]

Koji: "Yes! This is what we've been working for, so click yes!"

Carmen clicks yes, and a blue light suddenly surrounds her, bright enough that I have to look away. When I look back, she looks the same. No wait... maybe a little healthier? Maybe.

*ding*

That's the screen notification sound, but I don't see a new screen. Maybe it's behind the Quest Complete screen that is still taking up most of my vision.

[Quest Complete - Train a Magician! (Part 5)]

[You successfully taught Carmen a new spell!]

[Reward: 1x Advanced Spell Credit]

[Advanced Spell Credit]

[Immediately increases the proficiency of any unmastered advanced spell to 100%. Mastery must be higher than 0%. Item is automatically applied but can be directed towards spell of choice.]

I click accept and the screen closes to show another [Quest Complete] screen.

But before I can read it, another screen pops up in front of it.

[Applying Advanced Spell Credit]

Wait. Wait. Wait.

[Detecting unmastered advanced spells]

No. Stop.

[No unmastered advanced spells detected]

Yeah duh.

[Calculating alternate reward]

[Detecting mastered advanced spells]

[No mastered advanced spells detected]

[Calculating alternate reward]

[Detecting unmastered intermediate spells]

Nothing I can do is stopping it. I give up. This game hates me. It's like winning the lottery and then them only paying you pennies.

[No unmastered intermediate spells detected]

[Calculating alternate reward]

[Detecting mastered intermediate spells]

[No mastered intermediate spells detected]

[Calculating alternate reward]

[Detecting unmastered beginner spells]

So I'm going to learn a beginner spell? Sounds... absolutely awful. Why couldn't it just let me wait and use it on a grimoire?

[No unmastered beginner spells detected]

Huh?

[Calculating alternate reward]

[Detecting mastered beginner spells]

[Mastered beginner spell detected "Magic Spark"]

[Only one choice is available. Applying choice]

[Applying spell usage bonus to "Magic Spark]

Spell usage bonus? What does that mean? I pull up my status screen and look at my magic skill. It looks exactly the same as it did before. No new spells. No new effects on magic spark.

No new anything.

I pound the table with both hands in frustration.

Carmen: "Are you ok, Koji?"

I take a deep breath.

Koji: "Yeah. I'm ok. I was just supposed to get a reward for the quest to help you learn a spell, and it looks like it didn't work."

Carmen: "Oh. I'm sorry... but thank you for teaching me! I can cast magic now!"

She casts magic spark, and a spark of magic shoots from her fingertips a few inches.

After so much work, I can't help but smile.

Koji: "That's incredible, Carmen!"

Carmen: "I wanna show the other kids! Can we go now?"

I think. I have no idea where the guard captain guy is training. We could go back to the church, but there's only one kid training with Sister Maribel. Jade has three apprentices, right? And I owe her anyway. I promised her I'd stop by to help whenever I could, and teaching Carmen about magic has taken up all my playtime for a while now.

Koji: "Sure! Let's go visit Jade."

I check the last quest screen as we make our way to the market.

[Quest Complete - Train a Magician!]

[You've taught Carmen to be a magician!]

[Rating: Excellent]

[Extra Reward: 1x Passive Skill: Teacher]

[Teacher]

[Explanations and instructions you give to others are more easily understood. When teaching, you have a chance of enthralling your listeners. Students and apprentices gain bonuses in proficiency and understanding.]

---

My mind returns to the present, and the screen that is in front of me.

[Congratulations! Due to your tenacity, devotion, and undying love towards the most basic of spells, you have unlocked a new Special class!]

[Special Class: SparkMage]

[The SparkMage excels in casting a single spell - magic spark! Unlocked by casting the most basic spell 10,000,000 times without ever casting or gaining proficiency in another spell.]

[The SparkMage may manipulate magic spark spells after they have been cast. Cooldown and mana costs are reduced based on total number of times cast.]

[Due to an extreme focus on the basics of magic, the SparkMage may not learn or cast any other forms of magic, nor may the SparkMage wield a focus of any kind.]

[Upgrade to Special Class: SparkMage?]

A voice breaks me from staring at the screen.

Jade: "Fruit boy! A little help here?"

Oh.

Yeah.

I look around and the crowd of kids that was watching me "show off magic" is gone.

Jade is great with kids, but she's a bit scattered. And three rambunctious kids, on top of running her store and making products for her customers, is too much for her to handle alone. Apparently someone is supposed to be coming to help her later, but for now I'm on entertainment duty.

I was just casting magic spark, showing the kids how to use it in different situations, when the screen popped up.

I walk over to Jade.

Koji: "Have you ever heard of a class called SparkMage?"

Jade sighs and pulls a child out of her materials chest before responding: "Maybe? What kind of class is it? Beginner? Intermediate?"

Koji: "It says Special Class."

Jade lets go of the wayward apprentice, who immediately climbs back into the chest and snuggles up against the fabric inside.

She turns to me, grabbing my shoulders and putting her face only inches from mine: "Did you say Special Class, Fruit Boy? Like the super secret one-of-a-kind ultra rare classes that are impossible to get? That kind of Special Class?"

Koji: "Um..."

Jade: "Show me the screen, Fruit Boy!"

I flip the screen. Thankfully it lets me share it with her.

She looks at it, reading some of the words aloud as she does.

Jade: "Special Class... SparkMage... ten thousand... million... wait, 10,000,000 times? Is that even possible? What kind of number is that?"

She looks at me with a look that combines shock with disbelief, and a hint of... pride?

Koji: "I already did a short calculation... the cooldown for a basic magic spark is 10 seconds, longer if you multicast it. I can cast it a couple times quickly, but then I have to wait longer to cast it again. Either way, casting it 10 million times is impossible. Even if you had enough mana to cast it every ten seconds, and stayed awake the whole time and never slept or ate or stopped, it would take over 3 years. If you spent 8 hours a day, it would take 10 years."

Jade comes over to me and grips my shoulders tightly in her hands, looking me in the eyes.

Jade: "Click yes, Fruit Boy!"

Koji: "But it says I won't be able to learn..."

She interrupts me.

Jade: "That doesn't matter! Have you heard of the Lord of Magic? The Lord of Death? The King of War? The Queen of Archery? They All. Have. Special. Classes. This screen could go away at any time, and there goes your shot to greatness! Click yes!"

She is looking at me with incredible intensity. And from what I remember, you can change classes. It's not easy, but it's possible.

I click yes.

[Upgrading Class to Special Class: SparkMage]

A brilliant blue light surrounds me. When it disappears, the beginner wand that has been in my hand, or in the holster of my belt, is gone. Otherwise it doesn't seem like anything has changed.

Jade: "How does it feel?"

Koji: "It's the same... no... wait... I feel... slightly different? I feel like I can sense mana a little bit better now."

I pull up my status screen.

Koji: "I got 20 extra points in intelligence and wisdom?"

Jade laughs, a loud laughter that fills her booth: "See Fruit Boy? What did I tell you? Special Classes are insane!"

I open my skill tab.

[Magic Spell: Spark]

[The most basic of magic spells. Manifests as a spark of mana. Depending on the user's proficiency, can be used as both an offensive or defensive spell.]

[Special Class SparkMage in effect]

[The user may manipulate the spell after it has been cast.]

[SparkMage cast count: 10,000,000

Current cooldown: 4.78 seconds

Current mana cost: 2.28]

[Active Skill: Rapid Cast]

[Rapidly cast a single spell, ignoring cooldown. Number of possible consecutive spell casts depends on proficiency. Spell strength is significantly lowered, mana cost is decreased slightly. Increased spell cooldown after skill activation. May be combined with other spell skills.]

[Active Skill: Empowered Cast]

[Use significantly more mana to empower a single spell. May be combined with other spell skills.]

Koji: "This is... this is crazy!"

Jade: "What is it, Fruit Boy?"

Koji: "The cooldown is cut by more than half... and the cost is almost nothing! And if I combine the two spell skills..."

I close my eyes and concentrate, activating both Rapid Cast and Empowered Cast, before holding up a single finger and casting magic spark.

Sparks start flying out of my fingertip.

Fast.

Like 3 sparks per second.

The sound of so many sparks catches the attention of all the kids in the booth, who gather around me quickly.

Jade: "Is... is that spark? How are you doing that?"

Koji: "It won't last long. I don't have that much mana."

But the sparks keep coming. And coming. And coming, forming a small cloud above my finger.

I open my status screen and notice something I hadn't seen before.

Koji: "I have... 1000 mana?!?"

Jade: "WHAT IN THE LITERAL FREAK FRUIT BOY! I HAVE 20 MANA AND YOU HAVE A THOUSAND?"

It looks like the stream of sparks takes a bit more than 10 mana per second. I can't really count it since it's moving way too fast.

Then I remember something. And when I close my eyes, I can feel the presence of the sparks above my fingertip. I open them, and try to will them to move.

And the small mass of sparks moves.

Jade: "Aaaaaaaaahhhh! It moved! Fruit Boy! It moved! Get it away from me!"

I move the mass of sparks over closer to Jade, who is frantically screaming and trying to get away. I bring the sparks back and try to make them move in different ways. It feels weird at first, but I realize that I have complete control over the movement.

I try to split the mass apart, and it splits into two even balls. Split again, and it turns into four.

I close my eyes and envision a circle. Open my eyes, and the sparks are in a circle. Then a square. Then a triangle.

I turn off the sparks from my finger and keep manipulating the sparks in the air.

Jade: "Wh...what are those, Fruit Boy? Are you doing that? Is this from your new Special Class? Why aren't you answering me?!?"

I manipulate the sparks into a line, then more shapes, before sending one to the ground, where it reacts as magic spark normally would. The others I will to disappear, and they suddenly disappear.

I turn to Jade and smile.

Koji: "Yes, Jade. That was me. It looks like I've officially become a SparkMage."
