Tom slowly started to wake in the morning. It was some of the best sleep he got in along time, but using that much magic did have its cost. His stomach is demanding tribute and he was about to get out of bed when a question run though his mind.
'Why am I in a bed and who's next to me?'
Opening his eyes to see a head of black feathers on his chest. It took Tom a couple of seconds to realize June was sleeping next to him. They could talk about this some other time. He had bigger problems. Shaking her shoulder a little seemed to do the trick. June pulled herself closer to him and tried to mumble something. Tom sighed and told her.
"June, I need to eat. I'm running on empty here."
Her head snapped off his chest as she sat up to look down at him.
"Oh sorry, I didn't know. I'll go make breakfast."
Before he could say anything she jumped out of bed. Tom caught a glimpse of her purple dress as left. Getting out of bed to, he changed into his t-shirt and jeans. Smelling the food as he walked in and sat down at the kitchen table. It looked like she was making egg omelettes. Tom notes its just him and June in the house.
"Where are your parents?"
Flipping over one of the omelettes as she replied.
"They out getting groceries. Food should be all most done."
He played round with some magic to pass the time as she cooked. Setting a plate next to Tom, she saw him light a fly on fire by pointing a finger gun at it.
"Hey, you're getting better at it."
Starting to eat when he told her.
"Just the small stuff. So, more of your feathers uh, opened or is it bloomed?"
Looking surprised as she pulled a feather into her field of view. The quills on her arms seem to be longer also when she looked herself over.
"I'm changing so fast. Is it normal?"
He thought about and came up with an idea.
"Maybe you're soaking up the mana I have been throwing round? Also sleeping next to me is probably helping it a lot."
She just smiled and said.
"You did say wanted to sleep in a bed."
Tom must have really out of it because he didn't remember saying that. They were all most done eating when there was a knocking at the front door. Tom got up to answer it. When he looked out the front window, he could see two guys who appear to be detectives. He sighed and opened the door.
"What can I do for you two?"
One of the detectives was about to say something, but stopped and looked to his partner. They had a silent discussion between themselves and looked back at Tom.
"Excuse me, but are you the guy from the missing persons cases?"
Tom smiled at the two men.
"You found me, good work boys. If you're interested in seeing June's dad, he will be back from the store soon."
If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
There was another look between them and the right one asked Tom.
"Could you come down to the station for some paperwork? It won't take to long."
The answer they got was.
"No."
This time the other one laughed and said.
"Look son, you are going to come with us down to the station or we'll arrest you."
Tom could have gone with the classic fire ball or even tried to be fancy and use a water whip. Instead, he used mana to gathered sand and dirt to hover above his palm. It looked like a miniature Jupiter as different bands of color formed. What really alarmed them was the hissing noise made by the sand and dirt shifting on its surface.
"I am not going with you."
This bit of magic and his calm attitude unnerved the harden detectives, but they pressed on.
"You know this is resisting arrest."
Tom was still as a rock, just said.
"If."
They glanced at each other and then back at Tom.
"What do you mean by if?"
He smiled at them and explained himself.
"It would be resisting arrest 'IF' you tried. Are you going to try?"
Tom looked down at their feet and the hissing noise got louder. June had to stand on her toes to just rest her chin on Tom's shoulder. In a happy voice she greeted them.
"Hey Alice, hey Chris. You guys should get going, you're making Tom mad."
Both of them were thrown off by June appearing out of no where. Chris asked her as she looked down at the ground.
"June, is that you? When did-."
Alice cut him off.
"Chris, we should get going. As in right now."
Not knowing why his partner would make this suggestion, he asked.
"But we have him. Why would we let him go?."
Growing as he told Chris.
"Have you looked down at the ground?"
There was small stone like spikes all round and pointing at them. Tom repeated himself.
"If."
A wizard was way above their pay grade and even if they did get him into a cell, there was no way it would hold Tom. Being smart men by choosing to leave and letting someone else can deal with this problem. The spikes followed them out to their car like sharks in the ocean. As soon as they drove away, Tom's little sand spikes and mini planet fall apart. June hugged him from behind as he let out a sigh.
"Good thing they fell for my sand spikes.
She had an impulse to ask what the ball of sand was for, but let it pass. He was feeling drained, but he knew what was going to happen next.
"June."
She chirped a little hum and he continued on.
"She'll be here soon."
