More work

Darren Wiznitskiy drove his semi all the way back to the Omnicorp inc. tower.

He’s already had quite a day, adrenaline pumping car crashes, and a rabbit chase through an arena of land mines… and he’s racked up plenty of notes for crucial game development and changes.

He entered through his garage, parked the semi and took the elevator to the top office. His penthouse office, beautifully set up with one desk, a phone and a laptop, and plenty of space. It was here that he picked out his pre-made characters before going out to play… or work, as he has been. Working, that is. He has definitely just been working.

But today was over, it had actually been a day and a half, and he had to get back to the office and make some outside world tweaks, and catch up with his Vice President and friend, Bret.

So he left his 360 view of the world of Default and went down to enter the portal back to the real world.

His view shifted quickly, and he was now laying on his custom built full-immersion bed with wires and tubes connected all over himself. His attendant helped him out rather quickly, unplugging the wires and disconnecting the tubes, and getting his back into normal clothing.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

Darren picked up his tablet, which relayed everything he had jotted down inside Default, and went to his office.

It was midday, the office was buzzing with people looking like they were typing, programming, reviewing player’s behavior, or updating gameplay experience and handling things quite slowly in his opinion.

He didn’t bother with asking anyone to do the things he wanted done now. He just sat down and started doing it himself.

He went straight in, starting with the stock car race track. Adding more sun glare, increasing road slickness. He went in and changed a few defaults to the cars, making them much more difficult to steer and control.

All in all, his idea was to keep players learning how to drive better, and take longer in the game, having more fun. He couldn’t have anyone reaching his boss, deep under earth Omnicorp inc. tower. His boss was the ultimate killing machine guarding the one and only portal back to reality which players could reach. But before reaching him, they had to get through levels upon levels of enemies, demons and creatures. Before that, they had to play Default, level up and actually know how to fight, and to do that they have to learn.

So he kept up with his reprogramming, handling things at the drag race, the racetrack, and the demolition derby as well. They could always use a few more explosions.

The day was late, and even though it was long past hours, his relentless employees were trying to cost him overtime, or show that they weren’t clock punchers. They probably just stayed just because he was staying.

After a few hours late into the night, he had finished his last effort to make real life effects of car crashes beyond real; bone shuddering and skull shaking. All the more fun in the demolition derby.

He packed up and went home to enjoy a good night’s sleep.
