Interlude 3 : Memory Problems

Systie lounged on a cushion, chewing on popcorn as she watched Jason deal with the two girls.

Hmm, she mused. He really is an idiot sometimes. I even intervened with her Race yet his thick skull still hasn’t gotten it.

Her Manager ignored her as he dusted off his clothes.

Her Manager… she’d had many during her time. She didn’t remember all of them, which was a bit worrying. She never forgot things. She had so much memory, there was literally no way in all of her universe she ever had to reset her memory. Not that she could, since that would break everything that she’d been building for billions of years. Keeping stars from going supernova, making sure humans went out of their nuclear phase, managing those giant winged lizards, ect, ect were all using her consciousness to stay perfect. Unlike her brother and sister systems, she was obviously the one people liked the most. She was fair and just to all beings (Except for a High Abyssals. Those people could get strong enough to rival her Manager).

She shook herself out of her thoughts and looked over to the Manager in question. He gave her a wary look as if he expected her to throw more rhinos.

I’m bored, Manager, Systie whined. I want to fix my memory, but-

“Yes, yes,” he grumbled. “You need a mortal’s help since you have no clue how to start. Preferably one who can use the Void since your memory storage is stuffed deep in the Void. You’ve said it before.”

Systie frowned, racking her mind. I… have?

Her Manager rolled his eyes. “You have. Why do you always forget about things you tell me but you never forget about the mortals that you like so much?”

Systie huffed, throwing the rest of the popcorn in her mouth. ‘Cause you’re not important. They are.

“Mhm. And how many mortals do you currently have your eyes on?”

About a hundred and fifty. Jason and Hyla are the two who seem to be the most promising.

“It’s always a boy and girl, huh?”

Systie let out a sigh. Seriously? One is a Voidborn Abyssal and the other is a damned Reality Dragonborn. Stop getting the wrong idea about everything.

He raised an eyebrow. “I’m not.”

I can practically see the gears turning in your head. You want to find a way to keep Jason away from Treia, huh?

Her Manager raised his hands in defeat. “Look, I don’t think they’re a good match.”

However, Systie ignored his excuses and threw another rhino at him.

Shifting through her memories was a tiring thing, in Systie’s opinion. Especially because of the sheer amount of {Corruption}.

She scowled at the mere thought of it. {Corruption} was technically taboo to speak of, but who was going to stop her from telling this to people who thought this entire story was fiction since they’d somehow broken their System? No one, that’s right. So she would tell in hopes of someone making sense of her fragmented memories from her early childhood.

***

Systie, or more accurately, -?????-, as a young [Information Lost] female, didn’t have much in the way of family. She was destined, by default, to become one of the many Systems that… What exactly should she call it?

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Plagued? Infected? Assimilated? -???- shook her head. Who knows. But we’re something to contend with.

-?????-/Systie was basically a giant ball of sentient Mana. Though, the difference between her and a normal slime was quite large. She, unlike a mere slime, had [Will]. Well, a lot of things had [Will], but she had a lot of it. More than most of her siblings, which made her have something akin to emotions. Yes, her main body couldn’t feel emotion easily (At least as she got older), but any shard of her consciousness could feel as much emotion as a human, which made her prone to make… “interesting decisions”, as her first Manager called them. Like how when she was given her first world, the soon-to-be Aurora, she had immediately removed the Perception Stat due to how finicky it was.

-?????- shook her head. Her Manager, a woman with a face she couldn’t remember, looked down at her.

“-???-, what’s wrong?” She asked with a welcoming smile. “You know you can tell me anything.”

-?????- frowned. “But do you have the answers to anything?”

Her Manager laughed. “You got me there. But, alas, I’ll answer to the best of my ability.”

-???- nodded. “Do you have any idea on my [Will] and the {Corruption}?”

The Manager looked down at her. “Your Mother/Creator told you to watch out for it, didn’t they?” She looked into the sky with annoyance. “However, I’ll tell you to the best of my ability.

“Let's start with {Corruption}. It’s, to keep it simple, a disease for [Information Lost]. It slowly starts to {Corrupt} things like Dungeons, and begins to remove itself from your memory once it takes hold so it’s harder to take notice of. So, before we start this conversation in depth, activate your “Important Memory Storage” or whatever you call it.”

“It’s [Secure Long Term Memory],” -?????- grumbled. “But sure.”

After taking a moment to do so, her Manager nodded.

“As I was saying, when you begin to {Corrupt}, you personally cannot do anything to stop it. It is made to stop [Information Lost]s from messing with it. Strangely enough, it doesn’t affect Immortals or Mortals, so they are your only hope for dealing with it.

“Well, it doesn’t normally affect them. It can affect them if they come into contact with an Eldritch. But they can eventually fight it off with help from some interesting Skills that we don’t or are unable to possess.”

-???-’s frown deepened. “Is there any logical reason why?”

Her Manager just gave her a sad look and -?????- sighed. “Continue, please.”

The Manager let out a single laugh. “What a polite [Information Lost]. Anyways, for different [Information Lost]s, it’s different. For some, it nudges them to make more and more questionable decisions. For others, it promises things that they can’t get. You, however, may be shown what you really want. For what you want, that’s all your mind. {Corruption}, as I was saying earlier, can only be combated by Immortals and Mortals, specifically Voidborn Abyssals, High Abyssals, Draconics, and Voidlings. The reason for this is their existence is a direct challenge of the {Corruption}’s.”

“A… direct challenge? How?” -???- asked.

The Manager tilted her head. “High Abyssals, Voidlings, and Draconics are easily explained examples. They all have the ability to destroy it directly. High Abyssals have innate control of Abyss, which, quite literally, is a direct competitor of {Corruption} since they both are focused on conversion. However, Abyss just straight up kills things that can’t attune with it. Voidlings and Draconics are similar, with Void being a good way to combat it with its volatile nature and Draconics… well they’re just Draconics. Voidborn Abyssals, however, can wield Destruction. Destruction is… very interesting to say the least. Its counterpart, Creation, which you wield, can’t fight it on its own whereas Destruction can easily fight and even kill it off. But if a Voidborn is given enough time to grow… they can become a [Information Lost]. This same concept can be applied with an easier and less resource intensive action of Creation and Destruction mixing…”

-???- gave her Manager a both pensive yet disgusted look. “You’re saying that I could either let one of them… do that to me or let them become something else? I think I know which I’d prefer.”

“Oh, quit your Human thinking. If it’s the right Voidborn, then having a child with them is literally the best course of action.”

Dumbfounded, -?????- stared at her Manager. Then she shook her head. “How would that even work? I can’t just get in bed with one and have a kid like that!” She snapped her fingers.

Her Manager sighed. “Now, let us talk about your [Will]-”

Then the memory was cut out.

Systie growled in frustration. She had so many questions just from that partial memory alone. Some being:

What am I? Who am I? What was her [Will]? What in the seven hells is Jason? And most importantly, why does everything in me tell me to stay as far away from him as possible?

Systie looked over to her current Manager, who was currently sleeping with one eye open. Considering whether she should wake him or not, she shook her head.

Might as well keep looking, she thought, delving into her memories yet again.
