Chapter 3 : Classes and Thresholds

Chapter 3 : Classes and Thresholds

I gripped the horn with both of my hands and, after steeling myself, ripped it out of the rabbit’s skull. Unlike what I expected it easily slipped out and I grinned at my new weapon even as I fell to the ground. Now I have a 10 inch horn from an oversized rabbit.

“I dub thee ‘The Horn of Justice!’” I exclaimed, followed by cackling, naturally getting a strange look from Leah.

After I contained myself, I looked back over to Leah, who seemed to be thinking very deeply. After a moment, I shrugged and decided to look at my spoils of war more closely. Eyeing it, I was mildly surprised.

Void Unirabbit Horn

The Horn of a Unirabbit with a Void affinity. Can be used in alchemy. You wonder what will happen if you invade it with Abyss energy…

“Read my mind, Systie,” I said, grinning.

Leah looked back at me with a blank expression. “Did you just call the System ‘Systie’?”

I sighed. “Obviously. Makes them seem more human.”

She shook her head and looked back to the bodies of the rabbits. “We should go before something comes for these.”

I thought for a moment before grabbing a body and Eyeing it.

Dead Unirabbit (Void Attuned)

A dead Unirabbit with a Void affinity. When cooked, it’s safe to eat, increasing your Void affinity if properly prepared. This can only happen once per Void Attuned Beast with a maximum of 50% increase.

I raised it up to Leah’s face. “Dinner?”

For a few moments, she seemed confused. Then she grinned.

“Dinner.”

~~~
I watched as Leah tore into the rabbit meat, sighing when she swallowed. Shrugging I followed in her footsteps and bit some meat too. It was great.
After we finished (Leah burping afterwards, which she smacked me for laughing at. Ow), Leah turned to me and put her head in her hands, laying on the ground.
“Now what?” she asked. “I’m pretty… uncertain what to do now. I want your input.”
I gave her a smug look. “Want my input after years of never asking for my input before doing something stupid?”
She glared at me, signaling that this wasn’t debatable. Sighing, I kept talking.
“Well, I, personally, think we should work on getting stronger. Killing things seems to be the most efficient way to Level. Then, as a side mission, we figure out how to get out of here.”
“I guess that makes sense,” Leah said, frowning. “But what Level should we get to-”
New Quest!
The Leveling Escapade
You have decided that Leveling and escaping the Abyss before you are caught is the most important thing currently. Leah and you must get as strong as you can. Good luck, young Prince.
Requirements - Reach Level 50, Escape the first Level of the Abyss.
Rewards - ???
I blinked and looked up at Leah, who clearly got the same thing as me. “Well, I guess we should get to Level 50, I guess.”
The woman put her fingers on her temple, groaning as she watched the Draconic being rampaged in the furthest sector from her.
“Uh, Mother, what are you going to do about… that?” her daughter from next to her asked, gesturing at the Dragon. “I mean, I get being Queen and all is difficult, but a Dragon can’t be that difficult-”
“Shut up!” The Queen of Abyssals hissed, grabbing her daughter’s horn. “Let me think, Gods damn you!”
The girl struggled in her grip before the Queen sighed and let her go. “And don’t say stupid things. Just because I could kill a Level 120 Dragon means nothing. Level 300s are many calibers ahead of that. This will take time-”
Through the screen, there was an explosion as the Dragon blew up yet another building, this time an unimportant store.
“Hey! I liked that store!” The Princess complained. “Rude!”
Why did I decide to have a child? The Queen wondered, groaning quietly. Is this what I was like at her age? She cringed at the thought, hoping she wasn’t.
Her daughter looked up at her mother with a concerned expression. “Uh, are you okay, Mother? You look…” The Princess thought for a moment. “...concerned about something. Or cringing. Can’t tell which one.”
“I’m wondering when a Prince is going to show up to take you away,” The Queen hissed.
Unfortunately, this didn’t stop her from speaking. Instead, she froze, going starry eyed. “A Prince… I wonder when-”
Tuning out her idiot daughter, she looked back at the Dragon, contemplating for a moment. Then she cursed as a restaurant was frozen in a block of ice.
“Oh, come on, you dumb animal. I loved that place,” she muttered, annoyed. “My Prince took me there.”
Congratulations! You are now Level 10!
+ ?? Free stats
Stats will be given after choosing Class.
You can now choose a Class!
Begin your choice:
Ignoring this I looked to Leah and saw her giddy expression, telling me that she’d also hit Level 10.
“Classes!” She exclaimed. “I was right!”
I glared at her. “You were right? I was the one who said it first!”
“Details, details,” she said, waving her hand dismissively. “I still knew it.”
Sighing, I responded, “Well, I’m gonna check the Class choices.”
Leah hummed in confirmation, sitting down next to me. Rolling my eyes I began looking at the Classes. Scowling, I realized that most of them were normal things like Assassin, Archerer, Rogue, Barbarian, ect., ect., thoroughly annoying me. I mentally knocked off all the Classes except for three.
Abyssal Rogue (Rare)
As a Rogue, you are difficult to pin down, allowing for better stealth and increased speed when undetected. As you’re attuned with Abyss, you’re a menace to all who aren’t protected from the element.
+ 25% Abyss Damage Bonus
+ 2 Rogue Skills
+ 5 Dexterity, 3 Mana, 3 Intelligence per Level
+ 5 Free Stats per Level
After a bit of thinking, I decided that the rouge wasn’t really something I wanted. I mean, it fit all the things I could want, but it just seemed… underwhelming. Removing it from the pool, I looked at the last two.
Void Mage of the Abyss (Legendary)
This Class gives an even larger boost to your Void affinity, allowing you to cast Void Spells without self harm-
Before I finished reading that, I checked my race, wondering if I could get a description of it.
Voidborn Abyssal
Abyssals are a forbidden race, trapped in their namesake plane for eternity for the disrespect towards the Gods they’ve shown. You are part of this race, but special; an Abyssal born of the Void, giving you a 50% Affinity of the Void Element, letting you meddle with the Void without any self damage from it. You also gain a 50% Void and Abyss Damage Bonus. Any Effective Stat Percentage is also applied to the rest of Stats. You also gain 20% Void Resistance and 70% Abyss Resistance
Sighing, I ignored the Mage one and looked over the next one curiously.
Voidborn Abyss Prince I (Unique)
You are the Prince of the Void and Abyss. This is your path.
+ 50% Abyss and Void Damage Bonus
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.
+ 2 Skills
+ 5 All stats per Level
+ 12 Free Stats per Level
“Jesus Christ,” Leah muttered from next to me, looking at one of her own Classes. “That’s insane.”
I looked over to her before making my choice, as obvious as Systie wanted it to be (hell yeah. Imma call the System that, whether Leah likes it or not).
“What is it?” I asked her, curious.
“Some class that increases Physical Damage Bonus and increases it further if I’m unarmed. It also gives 7 Strength, 5 Endurance, 10 Divinity, and 8 Free Stats per Level.”
“Uh… Divinity?”
She blinked before looking a little meek. “Yeah. I use that instead of Mana. Regens slower but also is like, four times stronger than Mana. Anyways, should I choose the Class? Not that I care what you think about it,” she added quickly afterwards.
“Go ahead, Saitama wannabe. I got a similar class that is probably just as broken as that sounds,” I responded. Then I realized my mistake as I said that. “Wait, don’t actually become Saita-”
“I’M GONNA BE SAITAMA!” Leah cackled, falling onto my lap and laughing.
As she did this, I shook my head and chose the Class.
New Class Acquired!
Voidborn Abyssal Prince I (Unique)
+ 5 All Stats
+ 12 Free Stats
Shaking my head, I flinched at the Stat upgrades before looking down to Leah, who frowned at the air. Then she sighed before settling down, using my lap as a pillow.
“We’ve got a long road ahead of us, huh?” she said, looking up at me.
Resisting the urge to move her hair out of her face, I shrugged. “Yep. We do.”
I pulled up my Status before closing my-
New Skills!
“Well that was delayed,” Leah muttered.
“Skills?”
She nodded before sitting back up with a groan. Slightly bored, I opened the skills and was immediately shocked back to the living.
Void Armor - Level 1 | Tier 0
Draw on the Void to create an armor that both negates a percentage of damage and restores Mana and Health. When this armor blocks spells, it will restore Mana equal 10% of the
Mana used in spell and restore Health equal to 10% of half the Damage that would have been done with no defenses.
Damage Negation : 15%
Cost : 20 Mana/ 3s
Wreath of Destruction - Level 1 | Tier 0
Pulling on the Elements of Void or Abyss, wreath your weapon in either of them converting damage dealt with that weapon to that type and increasing damage dealt by a set amount for a certain time.
Damage Increase : 20%
Duration : 2.5 min
Cost : 40 Mana
I gaped, seeing potential with these skills. If I could Level these up, I could become unstoppable.
For a moment, I banished that train of thought, frowning deeply. I didn’t want to become a tool of destruction. However, that led to the thought of what I wanted to be in this world. Did I want to be powerful enough to protect myself and Leah? Or did I want to keep rising through the ranks, becoming stronger and stronger, making a legend of myself? Would that even be smart? An Abyssal of legend would be targeted by the powerful…
Looking over to Leah’s giddy expression, I decided to leave life decisions on hold. I mean, really? Who would want to leave their old life behind?
***
Mia snapped at the man, very displeased. She nearly bit off his arm but was promptly smacked by the scary woman. She shouted something she didn’t understand and pointed at the man.
Ever since Mia had been captured by the dark people, they’d herded her into a semi-large room clearly made for normal Dragons, not Draconic Serpents, as she’d found out quickly. Most of the other dragons there were cowering in the back of the room due to the scary woman’s presence, but Mia was stronger. She wasn’t scared. She did have unnatural amounts of Scale and Healing, as she called the two things that increased her regenerative powers. She also had a pretty decent amount of Mana as well, which was always good when she needed to blast things with lightning and ice. It was funny to watch people run around with their behinds on fire.
Back to the present though, the woman in a frilly… thing pointed at the man in front of her while yelling something.
“Bond with him! Now!”
Not understanding any of her squeaks, she hissed as loud as she could, causing the woman to cover her ears and glare at her. With a sense of pride, Mia floated over to the other dragons and settled onto the ground next to the largest, who was just barely half her length.
“She wants you to Bond with that man, you know,” the big red Dragon muttered.
Mia liked the Big Red. She was nice to her, though Mia wasn’t exactly the best at communicating. BUT THAT TINY PIECE OF MEAT WANTED TO BE HER BOND? NO!
“Bond?! That little sack of meat is nowhere near a proper Bond for a Dragon like her,” the male from across the room roared. “Like really? Him controlling something her size? Unlikely. Not even a Taming Skill could control her.”
The Draconic language was a mixture of snorts, growls, and light roars that Mia didn’t really understand well. As in, she couldn’t speak in it yet… not well, at least.
“Bad! No Bond!” Mia yipped, bristling her many spikes. “No worthy!”
The Dragon From Across snorted with amusement. “See? I told you!”
Letting out a huff of exasperation, Big Red rubbed her head against Mia’s scales and Mia warbled, leaning into it. “How can a Dragon this young be so invested in ‘finding a worthy partner’?” Big Red sighed, running a claw down Mia’s scales.
Ignoring the screeches of the woman, Mia was happy for the moment.
“So… an Abyssal was near you as you Integrated?” the woman asked the young girl.
“Um, yes? What exactly does that mean?” the girl asked nervously. “It said he was a threat?”
“‘It’ is the ‘Almighty System’, as some of the Guard like to call it and the Abyssal being a threat could just mean that the System is a bit wary, seeing as what happened a few thousand years ago with them and them disliking the power of the Gods, leading them to destroy about 500 thousand planets.” The woman chuckled at the memory. “That was something to see. They also killed a few hundred Gods.”
“A few hundred? But there’s only one God!” The girl exclaimed.
The woman looked at her and laughed. “No, no. There’s thousands of Gods. You may not believe me, but there’s a lot you don’t understand. You really just need to… adjust.”
After a few more spiels with the newly Integrated, the woman finally slipped off to the offices, ready to warn the Guilds about the impending danger. Naturally an Abyssal just had to appear in the middle of a peaceful period of Aurora.
I jolted awake and looked rapidly around me, suspicious. For a few moments, I was confused, seeing nothing around us, up or down. Then I looked down, and noticed that Leah’s head had fallen into my lap, yet she hadn’t woken.
You sleep like a rock, I thought, shaking my head and sighing. Typical Leah.
I slowly moved her head onto her backpack and pulled out the Unirabbit horn. Frowning, I looked over every surface, wondering how I was supposed to infuse Abyss. Then I thought about the Skill Description of [Abyss Touch]. Transmute…
I looked at the item, cracked my neck and used [Abyss Touch] for the first time.
“[Abyss Touch : Transmute],” I whispered.
I felt my Mana slowly draining and watched in awe as the Abyss poured out from my skin and into the object. For a few moments, I felt like I could shape how I wanted to shape the tool and after a bit, I thought of making it a weapon. It shivered in my hand and seemed to change shape, turning into a bit of a dagger as the area near the tip until it formed a twelve inch dagger, perfectly shaped into my hand.
Eyeing it, I was mildly surprised.
Unirabbit Horn Dagger (Abyss-Void Attuned) - Level 15 | Tier 0
The horn of a Unirabbit (Void Attuned) that has been melded into a dagger. Doesn’t dull if injected with Abyss or Void Mana occasionally.
10 - 20 Base Damage
+ 15% Void Damage Bonus when wielded
+ 20% Abyss Damage Bonus when wielded
Abyss Touch is now Level 2
“Fun,” I muttered. “In this place, I don’t think that we won’t get a chance to test this bad boy out.”
“Go back to sleep…” Leah muttered, groaning. “Annoying.”
Ah.
~~~

“I am really growing a hatred towards bunnies,” Leah hissed, grabbing one out of the air and throwing it against a tree, ignoring the sound of its spine shattering. “We’ve only gotten like four Levels outta these!”

“That’s still a lot of Stats, especially for us,” I responded, slashing at a Unirabbit with Abyss. “I think that we have far more stats than anyone at our Level.”

Eyeing Leah to see how much Health she had, I was confused when instead of showing a number, it showed a percentage. A few moments later, I came to the conclusion that the only reason it showed me her Health at all was because we viewed each other as allies. I mean, it’d be quite boring if we knew how much Health our opponents had.

A horn pierced my side, shocking me back to reality and I brought my shoulder down on the final rabbit, ending the fight.

Grinning wider, I dismissed my Status and looked back to Leah, who was currently writhing on the ground with silent screams. I sat there for a moment gaping before shaking my head and going closer to her, panicking.

“Leah! What’s going on?!” I exclaimed, pulling her head off the ground as she nearly hit herself onto a rock. “Why-?!”

For about a minute of this, I wasn’t sure what to do except cradle her head to make sure she didn’t accidentally kill herself.

Finally, she stopped moving around, taking deep breaths.

“Jesus,” Leah mumbled. “I didn’t know that’d happen.”

“Wha- what just happened?” I asked her, letting her keep laying on my lap.

She looked up at me, confused. “Not really sure. I just increased my Strength to 50 and then the next thing I know, everything hurts like hell. I- wait a sec.”

She froze as she seemed to look into the air, though I knew she was probably looking at a notification. Or she saw some sort of god descending upon us, I dunno. Shrugging, I watched as she read something, confusion crossing her face. After a second, understanding dawned.

“Ohhh. I guess,” she said, sitting up.

I gave her a look that I hoped was questioning. “This must be some sort of insane revelation, seeing as you look as if the gods just bestowed knowledge upon you about some ancient cultivation technique.”

She glared at me and I held my hands up. “Just saying,” I responded with a smug expression. “I’d look like that too… wait, are you copying me?”

“Oh shut it, you,” she snapped, smacking my arm for a solid twenty damage and a welt. “It’s called a Threshold. When you pass it, that one Stat is considered a different Tier of Stat. Like, now, my Strength is Tier 1 now. It just remade my muscles. How close to one are you?”

I took a glance at my Stats and sighed. “Four at 48 and two at 47. 1.5x multiplier.”

Leah blinked. “Really? I mean, if I wanted, I could do another one…”

“Don’t you dare-”

Naturally, as Leah would, she grinned widely and fell to the ground, her grin turning into a grimace.

I shook my head and began to wait.

Gulping, Treia began to manipulate the wind, this time paying attention to not reducing her clothing to shreds. The last few times had ended up like this, resulting in an expensive dress being ruined, to her aunt’s horror, and her nearly detaching her own finger.

Why does this have to be so hard? Treia internally hissed. And why do I have to become an Air Mage? Why can’t I be a swordswoman? That’d be both cool and effective.

Shaking her head, she pulled out her wooden training sword from her spatial bag and focused on channeling Air through that, finding it far easier. For some reason, her Uncle and Aunt dislike swords, greatswords, or just anything that required Treia to get up close and personal with her opponents. Not that it mattered half the time. Her opponents usually froze up, not willing to fight the Next-in-line for the throne head-on. Except for Alex, her sister’s betrothed. He did not care whatsoever about whatever bruises he gave her as long as she was the one who agreed to a duel.

Treia could confidently say that against him, she was never going to win. He had field experience while Treia was yet to go beyond the walls of the castle or her father’s city.

And the worst part? She was still Level. Fucking. One.
