Cult of the New Dawn: Chapter 6

Cult of the New Dawn: Chapter 6

He caught it all, all of it. He watched behind screens how one man walked into town and murdered everyone without breaking a sweat, without showing any emotion.

Walter’s brow was wet with sweat, his cheeks drenched with tears. He knew there was nothing he could do. He watched how some of the cultists ran away, only for them to be gunned down just outside of town.

Walter made sure the doors to the theatre were locked. I should be safe, or so he thought to himself.

He knew the cult was no good, he even watched as they slaughtered and sacrificed the entire town. Walter only wanted to avoid paying taxes, he never trusted a government that would rather spend their budget on making bombs than universal healthcare. It was the right thing to do; he reasoned.

If only he knew of the consequences of siding with evil.

He saw how people transformed into monsters, he thought it was all stories, and that magic was fake. Yet he watched how metal and flesh became one, and now he saw the reptile. How he walked through town and killed everything they saw. How indifferent they seemed, how he casually slit Martha’s throat without a second thought.

His radio buzzed on his desk. ‘What’s the situation?’

Walter picked it up, he counted to ten to hide his fear escaping their lips. ‘Badly, he is killing everyone who opposes him.’

‘What about the flagellants?’

‘Dead! All of them.’

The radio buzzed for a few seconds, Walter looked at the cameras to the school and he could tell even they were panicking. Theodor on the other hand seemed calm, like he was expecting that sort of thing to happen.

‘Just keep us informed on what is going on, okay?’

‘I will.’ Walter replied before he put down his radio.

Yet the more he watched, the more he realised something was wrong. The reptile was only walking into areas with cameras. Walter knew where all the blind spots were, even spots where it would be easy for someone to accidentally walk into. But for some reason, the reptile found a way to always be in the view of his cameras.

‘Jesus!’ He muttered to himself. The reptile wants to be filmed, he wants to make sure their slaughter was captured.

As the reptile walked to the main street, besides going to the school he decided to head towards the theatre. Where Walter was hiding.

Walter fumbled as he pulled out a revolver from a desk drawer. He thanked whatever god was out there, as the gun had six bullets.

‘Someone, I need help. He is coming towards me.’ Walter said on the radio. But no one replied, he looked at the cameras and noticed they all just stood there.

‘Someone! Please, I need help!’ He shouted. They didn’t need to reply to tell them anything. Walter watched as his fellow cultist turned off their hand radio in front of the camera.

‘Oh fuck, oh fuck!’ He repeated over, and over again. ‘I should’ve left when I had the chance.’

A knock came from the front door of the theatre. Walter’s stomach sank as the monitors showed the reptile standing in front of the door.

His hand shook as he aimed the gun at the entrance. He did his best to hold back tears… he knew this would be his end.

What could a former lighting technician do against a horror he didn’t understand? One that cared little about their presence, or cared about their death.

The door unlocked as the device on the reptile’s right wrist picked the door. He pushed it open and looked at the young man directly. Walter pulled the trigger…

Click!

He pulled the trigger again, but it only clicked once more. Little did he know, he didn’t turn off the safety.

The reptile’s expression remained blank as they walked inside the theatre, he slung the rifle to his side so he could pull out his knife.
