Chapter 7 - Botilish Lessons P2

Chapter 7 - Botilish Lessons P2

The next morning, the alarm rang at seven thirty A.M. Milo and Harry woke up at the same time and prepared for the lesson on day two. The following few days were very similar to day one where Mr. Zigi recapped the same topics to help them both consolidate their understanding of the basics of Botilish. On day five, things began to change. Harry and Milo had both entered the classroom that Mr. Zigi teaches in, and he had a few plans ahead that would change the whole environment that they are currently learning in.

‘Welcome back Harry and Milo! Today we will be starting a brand new topic where we will be focusing on speaking Botilish.’ Mr. Zigi stated.

‘Cool, I was looking forward to this from the very start!’ Milo replied.

‘That’s wonderful to hear, the day will go a little differently than the past four days. For the morning, we will be in the classroom practicing speaking to each other and for the afternoon we will go meet some new residents here and practice speaking with them.’ Mr. Zigi explained.

‘Sounds good, I always wanted to meet new cyborgs here!’ Harry said.

‘Same, let's get started then.’ Milo commanded.

‘Alright, please turn to page fifty-eight, and Milo could you be Dash and Harry can be Kopi, and I will be Omez for the role play.’ Mr. Zigi suggested.

‘Sure, will do.’ Milo replied.

‘Cool, let's start.’ Harry replied.

‘Ei Dash, neve tot mez vou.’ Harry solit.

‘Eiz Kopi grax tot sez vou avio! Whaz ave vou paz foz de daz?’ Milo asque.

‘Qusi vou!’ Harry repliz.

‘Hi Dash, nice to meet you.’ Harry said.

‘Hey Kopi, great to see you again! What are your plans for the day?’ Milo asked.

‘I’m planning to see my friend Omez for a dinner party. What about you?’ Harry replied.

‘I haven’t made up my mind yet, I’m currently free.’ Milo replied.

‘Well why don’t you come with me to meet Omez, he’s a very cool guy!’ Harry stated.

‘I’d love to if you don’t mind. So where is this place?’ Milo asked.

‘It’s not far, just a few minutes away from here. We will be there very soon.’ Harry replied.

‘Awesome! Can’t wait.’ Milo exclaimed.

‘We are here, I’ll just knock on the door real quick.’ Harry stated.

‘Kopi, you’re here and are you?’ Mr. Zigi asked.

‘Ah this is my friend Dash, he is here for the dinner party.’ Harry explained.

‘Oh I see, welcome both, please come in and enjoy the party!’ Mr. Zigi commanded.

‘Thank you!’ Harry replied.

‘Well done both of you! You both did a fantastic job at pronouncing the dialogue and I could feel that we are in the scene of the dialogue as well. With some more practice, you both can ace Botilish in a matter of days.’ Mr. Zigi stated.

‘Thanks for the feedback and encouragement, we will do our best to become more fluent!’ Harry replied.

‘Thanks a lot, so should we practice this dialogue again?’ Milo asked.

‘Ah I think we could have a little more practice, maybe two more times and we can move on to a new dialogue. Does that sound alright?’ Mr. Zigi asked.

‘Yes, that sounds good.’ Harry replied.

Mr. Zigi guided Harry and Milo through the dialogue again and corrected their pronunciations when it was necessary and then continued to practice a few more different scenarios until the bell rang.

‘Alright it’s time for a lunch break, I think you both gained a well deserved one considering the effort you both have made so far! I will see you two back after lunch and we can go over the plan in more detail.’ Mr. Zigi stated.

‘Great, thank you! We’ll be back soon.’ Harry replied.

As Milo, Harry, and Yoki left the classroom and headed to have a quick lunch before returning back to class for the afternoon lesson. At one P.M. they had arrived back and Mr. Zigi had also just walked into the classroom.

‘Welcome back, our afternoon lesson will go as follows. We will be visiting a common room to practice Botilish with others, that way you will develop a better understanding at how Botilish is spoken by a variety of different voices.’ Mr. Zigi explained.

‘Well that is a great idea, we can also make some new friends there as well!’ Milo replied.

‘Awesome, please follow me.’ Mr. Zigi commanded as he smiled back at Milo.

Mr. Zigi led them to the lifts and took them directly to level 299. As the lift opened, Milo saw so many cyborgs hanging around, some are playing board games and others are just relaxing and enjoying the nature of the indoor park. Mr. Zigi introduced them to a few of his friends and asked if they could practice Botilish with Harry and Milo.

‘Hi, it's great to meet you all!’ Harry said in Botilish.

‘Great to meet you both as well. So where are you guys from?’ Winzi asked.

‘We are from planet Earth where humans live.’ Harry replied.

‘Wow, I have never seen a human in my entire life, this feels unreal!’ Winzi exclaimed.

‘Well, now you have and we have never seen robots and cyborgs in our lives until just a few days ago.’ Harry replied.

‘So why have you guys come to Botilanic City?’ Rushi questioned.

‘Our original mission was to travel to the moon, but our space uh travel thing broke down and we landed here.’ Milo replied as he struggled to find the right word for spaceship in Botilish.

‘Oh my! That’s unfortunate. So how are you guys planning to head back?’ Rushi asked.

‘We don’t know yet but will figure out some way to do so.’ Harry replied.

‘Well, I hope you guys can and please enjoy your time here too!’ Winzi commented.

‘We will, thanks!’ Milo replied.

‘How about you guys spending the afternoon with us and we will take you both on a short tour on this level?’ Rushi asked.

‘That sounds amazing, we would love that!’ Harry replied.

‘Alrighty, so this level is basically an indoor nature park where fifty different types of plants are grown. You guys can follow us and take a walk around this level if you want and ask any questions if you need.’ Rushi explained.

‘So how often do you guys umm hang out here?’ Milo asked.

‘It depends, but we usually spend around three days each week here to chat and spend time with our friends.’ Winzi replied.

‘This place looks super clean and healthy as well, what do you both do for a living?’ Harry questioned.

‘I work as an elementary school teacher.’ Rushi replied.

‘I’m a landscape designer, I love to design nature and parks like this one.’ Winzi replied.

‘Cool, that sounds like so much fun!’ Harry replied.

As Harry, Milo and Mr. Zigi spent the rest of the afternoon with Rushi and Winzi, Yoki has been busy with other commitments where he left Harry and Milo on their own to practice Botilish without him being the translator. As it was nearly five P.M., they both said goodbye to Mr. Zigi’s friends and went back to the language department.

‘Wow, that was an amazing experience!’ Harry exclaimed.

‘Same, I would want to do that everyday if I can!’ Milo added.

‘Well, I’m super glad that you both enjoyed your time with Rushi and Winzi, I think we can end today’s class from here. Please get a good night's rest and I will see you both tomorrow!’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Great thank you very much for today’s lesson!’ Harry replied.

As they walked back to building 101, Milo was relieved to speak with Harry in English again.

‘Ah finally, the day has gone by so fast! How’d you think about today’s lesson?’ Milo asked.

‘I thought it was great meeting Rushi and Winzi, we spoke in Botilish for pretty much the whole day! Can you believe that!’ Harry replied.

‘I didn’t think I was gonna make it through the day, but I did! We couldn’t have done it without Mr. Zigi and the practice we have accomplished for the past few days!’ Milo exclaimed.

‘Yeah absolutely, he’s one of the most entertaining teachers I’ve ever met before! We should definitely give him a surprise after the end of the fourteen days.’ Harry replied.

‘Oooh that sounds cool! What are you thinking?’ Milo questioned.

‘Not sure but maybe a present, we might take a trip to the shops in the coming days.’ Harry replied.

They headed back to level two for dinner, practiced a little more Botilish with each other and got ready for bed. Throughout the next three days, Mr. Zigi had led them to a variety of different places to practice speaking Botilish where the schedule mimicked day four and both Milo and Harry have significantly improved. On day nine, Mr. Zigi had moved on to teaching writing.

‘Welcome back to class! We are up to day nine which you know what that means, its writing time!’ Mr. Zigi commented.

‘Nooooo! I really enjoyed speaking with others, can’t we continue with that?’ Milo asked.

‘Ahh unfortunately not, we have a schedule to follow so you guys can be ready when it comes to the test!’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Well, l’m ready for it let's get started! We can always practice Botilish with each other later.’ Harry reassured Milo.

‘Right, so we will begin by writing short paragraphs in Botilish about yourselves first and then I will give a new topic where you both will write a short essay about. Does that sound clear to both of you?’ Mr. Zigi explained.

‘Yep, all good!’ Harry replied.

‘I guess so.’ Milo replied.

‘Great, I will show you guys first a paragraph about myself so you both can get to know me a little better!’ Mr. Zigi stated.

Mr. Zigi displayed the paragraph on the digital whiteboard and it reads:

Ja nimiz si Xaneth Zigi, vou mai kopa ja az Mr. Zigi fi vouliz un ofiz ja lansin solizi. Vou mai wonzi whiz ja bexan e lansin tepiz. Translated Version:

My name is Xaneth Zigi, you may know me as Mr. Zigi if you’re one of my language students. You may wonder why I became a language teacher. Well, I loved to learn languages when I was a child and I also loved working with students! Hence, I found that I can work with both by being a teacher. Other than being a teacher, I love playing basketball in my spare time and spending time with my close friends. I would love to one day win the BNBC which is the Botilanic National Basketball Championships. Let’s hear about you now!

‘I didn’t know you play basketball as well! I used to play basketball as a competitive sport back on Earth.’ Milo commented in an excited manner.

‘Wow what a coincidence! Well you can definitely write about that in your short paragraph.’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Sure I will, thanks! Can we start now?’ Milo asked.

‘Yes, you guys can start whenever you are ready, let me know when you have finished and we can take a look at both of your responses.’ Mr. Zigi replied.

Milo and Harry took the next ten to fifteen minutes writing about themselves in Botilish whilst Mr. Zigi waited patiently on his desk for them to finish. Not before long, Harry had finished and Milo took another few minutes to complete his paragraph.

‘We both have finished, Mr Zigi.’ Harry stated.

‘Well that was quick, let’s share your responses!’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Sure, I’ll start it off then.’ Harry stated as he read out his response:

‘Az vou guz knox, ja nimiz si Harry Quinto. Baz whez ja waz e cetz, ja waz fasiniz witz spax anz haz alovez drinis avoz travezing tot anoz planez. Translated version:

‘As you guys know, my name is Harry Quinto. Back when I was a child, I was fascinated with space and had always dreamt about travelling to another planet. I used to always participate in exhibitions and seminars about space exploration. As I got older, I was accepted into a prestigious Space program where I was able to enter spaceships to complete smaller missions with my leaders. Once I was able to fly a spaceship on my own, I felt so proud to accomplish the biggest dream of mine. So that’s a little bit about me and where I have come from. Thank you!’

‘Well done for sharing and your writing is perfectly on point! Milo you are up next to share!’ Mr. Zigi responded as he applauded him.

‘Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it!’ Harry replied.

‘Alrighty, I am ready to share my response:

Translated version:

Hi everyone, my name is Milo Quinto and I always look up to my older brother Harry back when I was very little. He had a major influence on me to head into space travel and we had always travelled together for the past few years. As I mentioned before, I’m also a competitive basketball player and have won many small and big competitions before. I would love to play a game with you Mr. Zigi when we have time! So I think that's about it, about myself.

‘Well, that’s wonderful to hear! I would also love to play a match with you Milo.’ Mr. Zigi commented.

‘Thanks, I appreciate it!’ Milo replied.

‘Awesome, so I think we can start by practising some small exercises on writing an essay and we can move on to actually writing the essay in the afternoon.’ Mr. Zigi suggested.

‘Great, sounds good to me!’ Harry replied.

Mr. Zigi carried on the lesson by introducing them the structure of writing essays and covering a few different essay topics, Milo felt a deep nostalgic memory as if was back in highschool. For the next hour, Harry and Milo took notes and completed the tasks on their worksheets until the bell rang. At noon, they headed to have a lunch break as usual and came back to write their essays.

‘Well, welcome back to our afternoon lesson! I will hand you guys an essay topic and I

would like both of you to write a short essay approximately 400 to 600 words in length and I will grade them back to you guys tomorrow. How does that sound?’ Mr. Zigi questioned.

‘Sounds fantastic, we'll try our very best at it!’ Harry replied.

‘Same, let’s get on with it then.’ Milo replied.

‘Right, so the essay topic is Should animals be allowed on aeroplanes? It's a persuasive essay topic so I would like you guys to argue one way or another and see your opinion on this topic.’ Mr. Zigi informed.

‘Alright, so do we have a set time to complete this essay?’ Harry asked.

‘Um, since it is your first ever essay in Botilish, I will give you guys the whole afternoon to complete.’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Well that’s reasonable enough.’ Milo added.

‘Alright guys, your time will begin from now.’ Mr. Zigi stated.

‘Just one last question, are we allowed to discuss our ideas with each other?’ Milo questioned.

‘Unfortunately not, it would be best to practice on your own as in the end we will be assessing your language ability as an individual hence its better to get used to it from early on. But you are allowed to refer to your textbook at any point if you need any guidance.’ Mr. Zigi explained.

‘Right, I see thanks!’ Milo replied.

As Mr. Zigi handed Harry and Milo a piece of paper with the essay topic, they began to think whether to agree or disagree with the topic. After a few minutes, Harry chose to disagree whilst Milo chose to agree. For the next hour or so, Harry had already finished his essay. He waited patiently for Milo to finish half an hour after him before handing it back to Mr. Zigi.

‘Mr. Zigi, we have finished our persuasive essays in Botilish. Shall I hand it over to you?’ Harry asked.

‘Woah that was fast! I thought you guys would take the majority of the afternoon to complete the essay. Uh, yes I will come collect your papers.’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Well I guess we are just fast writers, but it's not that fast if it's under test conditions to be honest.’ Harry replied.

‘So since you guys have completed the essay already, what would you like to do for the remainder of the session?’ Mr. Zigi asked.

‘Umm, I really don’t mind, is there anything else we need to learn for today?’ Harry asked.

‘According to the syllabus no, so I’m happy for you guys to elaborate your opinions for this afternoon.’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Well, can we play a game in Botilish?’ Milo asked.

‘Sure, we can do a guessing game, scrabble, hangman or any other suggestions we can also do that!’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Awesome, let's do hangman then.’ Milo replied.

‘Great choice! We take turns thinking of the word and guessing that! I’ll start and you guys can guess first.’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Alright, I guess the letter A.’ Milo replied.

‘Nope, next.’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘E?’ Harry guessed.

‘Yes, there’s actually two!’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘T?’ Milo guessed.

‘Yep there's one T.’ Mr. Zigi stated.

‘O?’ Harry asked.

‘Nope.’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Z? Milo asked.

‘No.’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘S?’ Harry asked.

‘Yes! One S. Just one more letter and you guys have guessed the word!’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Cool, is it I?’ Milo asked.

‘Correct, you guessed it, the word is Eite. What does that mean?’ Mr. Zigi asked.

‘Does it mean Enter?’ Milo asked back.

‘Yes that's correct! Well it’s you guys’ turn to think of the word to guess!’ Mr. Zigi replied.

‘Great, I’ll go first!’ Milo blurted.

Milo, Harry, and Mr. Zigi took turns and spent the rest of the afternoon playing hangman in Botilish until they had finished class. The next day, Mr Zigi had graded both Milo and Harry’s essays where they both got a B. For the next three days, Mr. Zigi has arranged a range of writing tasks, essays, and activities for them to complete before day twelve has come. On day twelve, Milo and Harry are back at Mr. Zigi’s classroom, waiting for him to arrive for class.

‘Good morning Harry and Milo! If you both have been keeping track of our syllabus, you should know that today is revision day! Any thoughts so far?’ Mr. Zigi questioned.

‘Ah revision, I completely lost track of time. The days have gone by so far with your teaching. We loved every bit of it!’ Harry replied in a delightful manner.

‘Glad to hear that, Milo, anything you want to add?’ Mr. Zigi asked.

‘What?? Revision already? I can’t believe how fast time has flown by. So what should we begin with?’ Milo asked.

‘Well, we have three days for revision before the final exam! So, I reckon we should start by revising the basics of Botilish and speaking on day one, writing on day two, and you guys can attempt a practice exam on day three to get a hang of how the actual test will be conducted. How does that sound?’ Mr. Zigi explained.

‘Clear as glass.’ Harry replied.

‘Cool, let’s get started then!’ Milo replied.

‘Right, I’ll give you guys a quick recap of the Botilish vocabulary, key verbs, and sentences, and then you both can complete the condensed worksheet.’ Mr. Zigi stated.

Mr. Zigi gave them a lecture on the important aspects of what to remember and take note of. For the next hour, they had completed the worksheet assigned to them. After Harry and Milo came back for the afternoon session, Mr. Zigi focused on speaking in Botilish, specifically the pronunciation of words and correcting their grammatical errors.

The next day, it was writing time. Mr. Zigi gave Harry and Milo a few different persuasive essay prompts and restricted them to complete it in a timed manner. They first began with a two hour timeframe, reducing it by thirty minute increments until they hit the one hour mark. After they had completed a total of three essays each and grasped a thorough practice of writing in Botilish, they headed back to the hotel for tomorrow's lesson.

It’s the final day of revision. Mr. Zigi had prepared a practice test for both Harry and Milo to complete. They sat down and worked through the given questions. At the end of the day, Harry found it alright in terms of difficulty whilst Milo found it more on the challenging side. Once they were back at their residential building, Harry helped Milo revise a little more before the final big test tomorrow.

‘Milo buddy, how are you feeling about tomorrow?’ Harry asked whilst revising the content.

‘I’m kind of freaking out to be honest! I’m just not sure if I can pass the exams tomorrow. What are you thinking?’ Milo asked.

‘Listen Milo, take a deep breath in and relax for a moment. I know you can do it and we will work together with the time we have left right now and I’ll try my best to help you grasp a better understanding of the concepts you are struggling with the most. You just need to believe in yourself!’ Harry replied.

‘Thanks so much Harry for the encouragement. I will try my very best. I just have one last question to get off my chest, what if you passed the exams and I didn't, what would you do?’ Milo questioned in a worried manner.

‘Ah Milo, you don’t have to worry about that. Remember we are in it together, I know we both can pass the test. If I did and you didn’t make it, we will leave Botilanic City together. I’m not gonna leave you behind, brothers always stick together.’ Harry reassured.

‘Appreciate it bro, well let’s not waste anymore time dwelling on this situation and focus on revising the content!’ Milo replied as he felt a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders.

As Harry helped Milo revise on the areas he felt short at for the remainder of the evening right before ten P.M., Milo felt more and more confident at speaking as well as writing in Botilish.

‘Well, since we have been studying for the past four hours, I think we should get a good night's sleep before the big day tomorrow.’ Harry suggested.

‘Yeah I agree! I think I’m feeling much better after this and will be good for tomorrow I think.’ Milo replied with uncertainty.

‘Ahh stop doubting yourself! We will ace the exam together!’ Harry replied as he tickled Milo.
