They carried on with their day as planned until the beginning of next Monday. As the alarm went off early that morning at six A.M., both Harry and Milo woke up to head for work. Harry was super excited for his first day at work. Milo on the other hand, felt a subtle heaviness weighing on his chest. He couldn’t grasp what the issue was and he had nothing on his mind, in fact to the point he felt blank. He hesitated about whether or not he should go to work. Thoughts began rushing through his mind faster than the speed of lighting. It felt as if a hurd of elephants were stomping on him.
‘Milo, are you okay? You’ve been very quiet this morning.’ Harry asked.
‘Yeah, I’m fine… I just feel that something is off, but I can’t pinpoint what it is.’ Milo sighed.
‘Uh, let me check your temperature, do you feel sick in any way?’ Harry questioned.
‘I don’t think so.’ Milo replied.
‘Okay so your temperature is 36.2 degrees Celsius which is in the normal range. I think if you’re feeling well enough, you should get going.’ Harry stated as he scanned Milo’s forehead with a digital thermometer.
‘Yeah you’re right, it's probably just my wild imagination! Let’s go then.’ Milo replied.
After breakfast, Harry waved goodbye to Milo as they headed in opposite directions to work. On the way to FAC, Milo still felt a similar feeling to what he felt like in the morning. However he brushed it off and carried on. Conversely, Harry was in a rush since the address Mr. Quinz gave him was approximately a twenty-two minute walk from their unit. He was following the GPS directions on his phone the whole time until he saw the sign SuperX in large blue letters printed on an emerald glass building. He had finally arrived at the company just on time and was ready to head inside.
‘Good morning, Mr. Quinz!’ Harry greeted as he saw him.
‘Ah Harry, good to see you right on time today. Could you come into my office first before you get started?’ Mr. Quinz requested.
‘Sure.’ Harry replied as he walked towards Mr. Quinz.
‘Alright, please take a seat. I wanted to discuss with you the contract for this role. So here it is and please read through it first. If you have any questions just let me know.’ Mr. Quinz requested.
‘Sure, I will thanks.’ Harry replied.
After looking through everything on the employment contract, he was satisfied with the terms SuperX offered and his duties as well.
‘I’ve finished reading through it Mr. Quinz, and I would like to sign the agreement.’ Harry replied.
‘Sure, go ahead whenever you are ready.’ Mr. Quinz informed.
‘Okay, there you go.’ Harry responded as he finished signing his signature and date on the contract.
‘Thank you, well we can get you started now with work.’ Mr. Quinz replied.
‘So what should I start with?’ Harry questioned.
‘So we have a load of packages that are unloaded each morning. You just need to grab the first bag of packages in chronological sequence and deliver them for the rest of the day. There’s roughly one hundred and fifty to two hundred packages in one bag, so that should be doable if you are on time with your deliveries.’ Mr. Quinz explained.
‘Ah got it, thanks! So is there a space drone provided to deliver these packages?’ Harry asked.
‘Yes, we do provide space drones for every two drivers. So you will be driving with a partner.’ Mr. Quinz replied.
‘Okay, so who’s my partner?’ Harry asked.
‘Let me check… alright Harry, Fozi will be your delivery partner today. He’s currently in the third space drone lane waiting for you.’ Mr. Quinz stated.
‘Cool, I will get my load of packages and meet him there, thanks.’ Harry replied.
‘No worries Harry, take care. Just let me know if you have any questions or issues.’ Mr. Quinz added.
As Harry picked up the first bag of packages, he almost couldn’t even move a leg at first. However, he slowly dragged the bag and made his way to Fozi.
‘Hi, do you need a hand?’ Fozi asked.
‘Yes please, it’s quite heavy.’ Harry replied.
‘No problem, I’ll help. Are you new by the way?’ Fozi questioned.
‘Yes, it’s my first day here. I’m not used to lifting heavy stuff. I’m Harry by the way. Are you Fozi?’ Harry asked as he nearly ran out of breath.
‘Yes I sure am, and I’m guessing you are my driving partner right?’ Fozi questioned.
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
‘Yeah, so how does this usually work? Like do we take turns driving or does one of us do the delivering?’ Harry asked.
‘Yes so usually we are like co-pilots and I will assist you with driving and vice-versa. Also take turns if you need a break and same with delivering the packages to the given addresses if that makes sense?’ Fozi replied.
‘Yep that’s much clearer thanks. How long have you been doing this job by the way? Harry questioned.
‘Uh, about three months now, I’m still kind of getting used to it.’ Fozi chuckled.
‘Cool, do you also have a set of packages to deliver? I just got about two hundred in this bag.’ Harry asked.
‘Nope that’s it, two hundred is already a lot of packages to deliver in one day so we just have your bag to do.’ Fozi replied.
‘Alrighty, then let’s get going. I don’t want to be late for my first delivery.’ Harry commented.
As they headed off with Harry being the driver first, Fozi began to deliver packages to the designated doorsteps. They carried on doing so for the rest of the morning. Meanwhile, back at FAC, Milo was still packaging items. In a matter of minutes, everything changed. A sudden thud began to crawl in. At first Milo thought it was just a storm outside, but little did he know tragedy was about to strike. Within seconds, FAC had begun to tremble. The high batches of wooden construction plates had loosened from the shaking. Milo and the other workers were running for their lives to find a spot to hide. However, it was too late. A piece of the plate fell and had just hit from the right side and had hit Milo’s knee. In that second, half of the building had collapsed. Everything went black. Milo could not see or feel a thing. Turns out he had already hit his head on the ground as well. He felt as if his soul had left his body. He felt like a small bird attempting to escape a locked cage, but did not make it in time. He felt empty.
Many of the other employees had injuries as well. However he was the only one that fell unconscious. Only Okish and Mr. Emiz were the ones in the office and hadn’t been affected by the disaster.
‘Someone please help!’ Tyriz, an employee shouted as he found Milo on the ground.
‘What happened?’ Okish gasped as he ran out of Mr. Emiz’s office after he heard the loud commotion.
Mr. Emiz rushed out as well, but he was too busy staring at what had happened to his company. He froze in shock.
‘I don’t know… all of a sudden FAC collapsed and Milo is now laying on the floor!’ Tyriz blurted in panic.
‘Woah woah woah please slow down. Is Milo breathing?’ Okish asked.
‘Uh, I don’t know! Can you check?’ Tyriz asked frantically.
‘Alright, let me check… I really am not sure as well. The wind is insane right now. I reckon we better call 999.’ Okish stated.
‘Okay, I’ll make the call.’ Tyriz replied.
‘Hello, how may I help?’ Dispatcher one asked
‘Uh, we need an ambulance and a team of medics if possible?’ Tyriz requested.
‘Sure, can you tell me what happened?’ Dispatcher one asked.
‘I honestly don’t really know, there was a massive wind or storm and somehow our company’s building collapsed and one of our co-workers is not responding to us. We don't know if he is breathing or not.’ Tyriz responded.
‘Okay, hold on please. I will send someone over right now. Do you know how to do CPR?’ Dispatcher one asked.
‘Uh, no.’ Tyriz replied.
‘I have some training in first aid, I can do CPR until they arrive.’ Okish blurted.
‘Alright, please follow my lead. One - two - three - four… One - two - three - four…’ Dispatcher one commanded.
‘Got it, thanks.’ Okish replied as he started doing chest compressions on Milo until the medical team had arrived.
‘They’ve arrived!’ Tyriz blurted.
‘Okay, you can stop doing the compressions from now and the paramedics will take over from now.’ Dispatcher one stated.
‘Alright, thank you.’ Okish replied.
‘Hi there, do you know what his name is?’ Paramedic one asked.
‘Uh, Milo Quinto as I remember.’ Okish replied.
‘Okay, so how long has he been unconscious for?’ Paramedic one asked.
‘Um, I think possibly ten minutes or so. I’ve kept on doing chest compressions until you guys have arrived.’ Okish replied.
‘Thanks, we will take care of him from now. Would one of you like to come with us to the hospital?’ Paramedic 1 requested.
‘Sure, I’ll come. I know him a little better than you Tyriz.’ Okish replied.
‘Yeah go ahead. I’ll stay back with the other medics to help our other employees out.’ Tyriz insisted.
‘Okay please hop on and let’s go!’ Paramedic one commanded.
‘Sure.’ Okish replied.
‘Alright, his vitals are stable and he is breathing. We’ll take him to the nearest hospital and investigate from there. Now do you know any of his close relatives or contacts of family members?’ Paramedic two questioned.
‘Uh, I don’t know. He’s new to the company. Maybe you could check his phone?’ Okish suggested.
‘Sure, he had a few missed calls from Harry. You know who that is?’ Paramedic two asked.
‘Oh yes, I believe he’s Milo’s older brother. That’s his only close contact here I think.’ Okish replied.
‘Great thanks, I will give him a call.’ Paramedic two commented.
‘Milo! Where have you been? You haven’t answered any of my phone calls.’ Harry asked.
‘Hi, are you Harry?’ Paramedic two asked.
‘Uh yeah, who are you and where’s Milo?’ Harry asked back.
‘Listen Harry, I’m a paramedic. Milo had been in an accident and he is now stable. We are taking him to hospital right now.’ Paramedic two explained.
As Harry heard each word one after the other, he froze. He couldn’t believe this had happened to his little brother. No words could come out of Harry’s mouth.
‘Harry, are you still there?’ Paramedic two asked.
‘Uh um… yeah… so which hospital are you taking Milo to?’ Harry questioned.
‘We are taking him to Botilanic Hospital. Would you be able to come meet us there?’ Paramedic two requested.
‘Yeah sure, I’m on my way. Thanks for letting me know.’ Harry replied.
‘No worries, see you there.’ Paramedic two responded as he ended the phone call.
Harry felt numb. He felt guilty. He was just on his lunch break on the first day of work and Milo had been in an accident. He knew that this could be prevented if he just had let Milo stay home for the day. But he doesn’t have time to think about this right now and needs to head to the hospital as soon as possible. He rushed out of SuperX and turned on his GPS navigation. It was a twenty-two minute walk from there and he ran as fast as he could to the hospital. After fifteen minutes he had just arrived at the emergency department.
