Chapter 2 - Disaster Strikes

Chapter 2 - Disaster Strikes

Staring out into the vast three-dimensional region filled with darkness, Milo sighed.

‘What’s wrong, Milo?’ Harry asked.

‘We’ve been travelling for three hours straight in this space shuttle…’ Milo responded with a toneless voice. ‘Are you sure where we’re going?’ Milo questioned.

‘Of course, we are travelling to the Moon. Have you forgotten already?’ Harry replied.

‘No, of course not. I was just wondering if you're going in the right direction, because it seems filled with blackness outside with no signs of anything else.’ Milo replied.

‘Well, if you don’t trust me going in the correct direction, maybe you should be the pilot.’ Harry grunted.

‘Finally! It’s been extremely tedious doing nothing except only being able to look outside the window staring into the middle of nowhere.’ Milo exclaimed.

As Milo took over to control the space shuttle, it went smoothly for another thirty minutes. Suddenly, the acceleration of speed rapidly increased by ten times in the space shuttle.

‘Ahh! What’s happening now!’ Milo screamed.

‘I’m not exactly sure, but something must have gone wrong! We need to find out what’s causing the problem.’ Harry replied in a concerned manner.

As Milo and Harry searched the space shuttle to find out what’s causing the problem, the space shuttle began travelling expeditiously. Immediately after five minutes, the red emergency signal started to flash rapidly which signaled the main control had stopped operating.

Instantly, the speaker casted an announcement ‘Mission control is damaged! Please EVACUATE immediately. The space shuttle began tilting from left to right and vice-versa non stop! It’s getting more and more unbalanced, and out of control.

‘Your space shuttle 9905 will soon crash in ten - nine -’

‘HELP! HELP! What are we going to do?’ Screamed Milo.

‘eight - seven - six -’

‘Keep calm, I think there’s a planet very close to us. Let's just hope we can crash on that planet.’ Harry replied.

‘We can not evacuate now or we will end up being stuck in the middle of nowhere!’ Milo bellowed in fear.

‘five - four - three - two - one your shuttle 9905 is about to crash.’ The announcement speaker commanded.

‘ARGHHHHHHH!’ Milo and Harry screamed.

As the space shuttle fell rapidly at a speed of approximately 59,888 km/h, Harry and Milo soon landed on an unknown planet. Approximately ten minutes after landing, Milo woke up.

‘Where in the world are we? Where’s Harry? Harry, Harry! Where are you?’ Milo shouted.

Harry soon woke up after hearing his name shouted about a hundred times.

‘Harry, where are we?’ Milo asked again.

‘Ouch, my arm!’ Harry gasped in severe pain.

‘What happened to you Harry?’ Milo asked as he looked at Harry covered in scratches and bruises on his face all the way down to his arms.

‘I can’t move my arm.’ Harry grunted.

‘OMG! Is it fractured?’ Milo asked.

‘I’m not sure yet, but it’s very painful.’ Harry replied.

‘Hang on to my shoulder, I’ll help you get back to the space shuttle to find a first aid kit.’ Milo suggested.

Harry wrapped his arm around Milo’s shoulder, slightly leaning onto Milo. They slowly started to make their way back to the space shuttle.

Looking around the planet from left to right, up and down, there’s barely anything to see. The ground is plain and dull that portrayed a texture similar to grey, solid-like sand. The only visible object was the damaged and shattered space shuttle. Half of the shuttle had fallen into pieces, the largest damage was situated at the left wing. Milo searched for a while until he found a small door to help Harry and him to get into the space shuttle. He fitted his body through the tiny door first, then helped Harry to get through it making sure his arm did not bump into anything. The inside of the space shuttle is damaged as well, the floor was filled with ash-like grains with bits and pieces of metal covered on top. At least it’s not as damaged as the exterior. Milo quickly found the first aid kit since he remembered it was inside the emergency cabinet. He opened the kit, reached for the bandage, unrolled it, and helped wrap it around Harry’s extremely painful arm. Milo also found an ice pack in the cool storage cabinet, he gave it to Harry once he had finished bandaging his arm.

‘My arm is already feeling much better.’ Harry commented, trying his best to hide the pain from Milo.

‘Well, it’s the least we can do for now, we don’t even know where we are and there’s definitely no place for x-rays to be taken.’ Milo replied.

‘I’m not sure if it’s fractured or not, but at least I have a protective layer so it won’t get any worse and definitely would help my arm heal faster.’ Harry responded.

‘What are we going to do now? Since we cannot reach our destination and our space shuttle is practically broken into pieces, how are we supposed to get back to Earth?’ Milo asked frantically.

‘We need a plan, but first we need to investigate the planet. Let's go and see if we can find any equipment in the space shuttle that can help us.’ Harry replied.

‘Okay, but are you sure that you can go?’ Milo asked.

‘Of course, it’s not like my legs are broken that will restrict me from walking, I’m perfectly fine. We better start searching for anything that can help us or else we may be stuck here forever.’ Harry explained.

‘Well, if you insist, we need to split up for quicker results. I’ll start looking at the left side and you can start at the right.’ Milo responded.

‘I agree, let's begin! Try not to get lost again.’ Harry replied in a cheerful voice.

‘I will never get lost again, I promise.’ Milo replied.

‘Here, take this handheld transceiver with you, just in case and for better connection for both of us.’ Harry said.

‘Fine, okay.’ Milo replied.

Milo stepped away from Harry and made his way towards the right side of the space shuttle. Keeping in mind not to step on shattered pieces of glass and metal on the floor whilst avoiding getting lost again. Meanwhile, Harry stood up from his seat and walked towards the left to the space shuttle. On his way, there’s not much to look at since most of the parts are basically fragmented into inconsistent pieces. This makes it even more difficult to find any equipment and for Harry to produce a clear path for himself to get through the mess especially with only one working arm. Ten minutes passed by, and neither one of them had found anything helpful. Milo was already tired, his legs could barely move, he was just about to give up searching until he saw a tiny spark of light shining through a pile of broken pieces. He rushed carefully to the pile, then dug through it until he had reached the bottom. Milo reached in and grabbed it with his hands, he definitely had no idea what it was, so he used the handheld transceiver to quickly call Harry over to see if he can find out what it is. Harry made his way over as fast as he could. He saw Milo a few metres away from him who was holding a blackish-blue coloured object with a few camera lenses sticking out. He wondered what could Milo have found as he made his way closer towards Milo.

‘Harry, Harry, come quick, what do you think this could be? Milo asked.

‘I’m not sure yet, I’ll need to take a closer look.’ Harry responded.

While Harry is taking a closer look, Milo is exceedingly curious about it which made him jump around as if he was a bouncy bubble. Harry found it quite interesting because the item looked quite similar to a long camera. It had different sized lenses from top to bottom, but also had two flaps located on both the sides. He examined it more thoroughly, then found a small screen with charged batteries inside. There was also a small ray of emerald, green light shining upwards.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

‘Do you know what it is?’ Milo asked.

‘Not quite, but from the evidence given, it most likely seems to be a small flying space vessel. It looks like it might work since there are still charged batteries inside. I think the best way to know is to test it outside.’ Harry suggested.

‘How are we gonna do that?’ Milo questioned.

‘There should be a remote control somewhere in this space shuttle. We might need to find it in order to test this.’ Harry replied.

‘Alright, let’s start searching for it.’ Milo responded.

‘It shouldn’t be far from here considering that the remote control and this small space vessel should both be stored together before our launch into space.’ Harry stated.

Once again, they were on the search to find a remote control that was compatible with the small space vessel. They started searching from cabinets, to draws, to benches, and finally on the ground. A few moments later, Milo began to dig through piles of broken pieces desperate to find the remote control. The ground was already a rat’s nest. This made it even worse, now it looked like giant trash cans poured all over the place.

‘What in the world are you doing!’ Harry exclaimed.

‘I’m searching for the remote control as you said before.’ Milo replied.

‘Stop! You’re like a dog digging a hole right now!’ Harry yelled.

‘Then how are we supposed to find it?’ Milo questioned.

‘Just take a break, you’re clearly out of your mind right now. I know that you’re just a little too keen on wanting to find it, however you’re causing a terrible mess in this space shuttle. We can search for it later after you have calmed down.’ Harry responded.

‘Okay, I guess we would have a better chance of finding it if we took a break.’ Milo agreed, as he walked towards Harry. ‘So, do you know where we are?’ Milo asked.

‘I’m not exactly sure, I assume we landed on the closest planet as I predicted before our space shuttle crashed. At that time, my mind went black and white. I felt a heavy crash, after that I couldn’t hear or feel anything before you woke me up.’ Harry replied.

‘Wow, I kind of felt the same thing too, I honestly can’t remember.’ Milo added.

‘We need to discover a way back to Earth as soon as possible. I mean if there’s no signal, then we have lost contact with everyone now. The mission crew members must be extremely worried and have no clue where we are. Also I can’t imagine how our parents would respond when they find out that we’re missing.’ Harry stated in fear.

‘I was so lost in my mind that I never thought about this. We better find a solution out of here soon, I hope.’ Milo answered in an uncertain voice.

Instantly, Milo stood up wanting to continue on searching for the remote control. Sitting behind Milo, Harry saw something.

‘Wait, I believe I’ve seen something drop on the floor.’ Harry stated, as Milo turned back.

‘What is it?’ Milo asked in curiosity.

‘Not exactly sure, I only caught a glimpse of it.’ Harry replied.

Harry stretched his right arm down to the floor. He felt something rough, irregular, it felt like a triangular shape. He flipped a small piece of blanket over, he expected that this must be the remote control.

‘Did you find it?’ Milo questioned whilst staring at Harry's hand.

‘I expect this is it! This should be the remote control that we’ve been searching for hours.’ Harry responded.

‘Finally, I would’ve passed out if we needed to keep on searching for it any longer.’ Milo gasped in relief.

‘Don’t get too excited, we still need to test it out in order to know if this is the right one. It looks quite unusual for a remote.’ Harry replied.

Milo took the small flying space vessel while Harry held the remote control in his right hand. They carefully made their way through all the damaged, shattered pieces across the floor and got out through the tiny, cracked door. The exterior atmosphere is entirely dark. To be more specific, it was completely black except for some white LED lights shining from the space shuttle. At least parts of the space shuttle still have lights, if not they could see nothing.

Harry began trying to connect the remote control to the small space vessel, however it seems like it was unable to connect. He tried over and over again even with Milo’s help, it still was motionless.

‘Harry, do you think this is the right remote control? Why isn’t anything working?’ Milo asked worryingly.

‘Wait a second, there’s red lines flashing on the control screen. It should be processing the signals given.’ Harry replied.

A few seconds later, the screen popped up a notice.

‘What’s wrong?’ Milo inquired.

‘It states that you are required to have a portable wire connector which must be connected to the flying vessel in order to produce motion of the product. You can find it in pipe T98.’ Harry read the notice out in a confused manner.

‘Is that all what it says?’ Milo questioned.

‘Yes, where is pipe T98? I’ve never heard of it before.’ Harry wondered.

‘I think I kind of remember where pipe T98 is. When we first entered the space shuttle, I completely lost track of you and got distracted from all the different hanging pipes in one room. From memory, I believe I saw a pipe labelled T98.’ Milo explained to Harry.

‘Really? If you are certain, in this case we should definitely re-enter the space shuttle and acquire the portable wire connector.’ Harry responded.

‘I’m positive that I saw T98, let's go back in.’ Milo requested.

‘Do you remember which room you saw it in?’ Harry asked.

‘I think it’s the second room when we first go into the space shuttle. Do you think it’s still there or is it already damaged into pieces?’ Milo queried.

‘Well we won’t know until we go in.’ Harry replied.

Once more, Harry and Milo re-entered the space shuttle to detect pipe T98. They both thought how many times we needed to search for items, everything seemed extra complicated after we had landed on this unknown planet. However, they both have a tendency to keep going aiming for success.

‘Are you sure where we are going? Harry questioned, following Milo’s directions.

‘Uhh, I'm quite sure.’ Milo responded with uncertainty.

‘It feels like we are walking in circles. You’re clearly unsure where we’re going.’ Harry stated.

‘Honestly, it’s difficult to remember. Besides, the room may already be damaged and the pipes could possibly fall anywhere.’ Milo assumed.

‘We do not have enough evidence to determine your assumption. Don’t worry, I’ll help you guide us to our desired destination.’ Harry replied.

‘Thanks, this would be much more helpful.’ Milo agreed.

Harry took over Milo and guided him in a more decent direction. They passed by a room followed by another, then another, and so on. It felt like it was never ending. It appeared as if the room didn't want to be detected. Most of the rooms were already damaged which created more intricacy to find objects, but the familiarity of the room had mostly stayed the same. Before long, they eventually came across a room that Milo was quite familiar with. It had pipes of all different shapes and sizes. Some were still hanging on the ceilings, some had already fallen on the floor, and some had been severely damaged into smaller pieces.

‘Harry, I completely remember this room. I think we would find pipe T98 here because this room had been the first impression that I had of this space shuttle.’ Milo stated in an exciting tone.

‘Well, if you certainly believe this is the correct room, we should unquestionably begin searching for pipe T98 here. Can you remember what size the pipe is?’ Harry replied.

‘Hmm...let me think for a sec, I remember that sizes A, B, and Cs were larger pipes while sizes X, Y, and Zs were leaning towards the smaller ones. The pipes also had a number labelled after the letter. It starts at number one and gradually becomes larger.’ Milo answered.

‘Alright, I presume that there is a pattern going on here. According to your response, I believe that T98 would lean towards the smaller scale if the pipes are arranged from largest to smallest.’ Harry responded.

‘Ohh, I hadn’t recognized there is a pattern going on.’ Milo commented whilst nodding his head.

They both continued on the search for this pipe. Using both of his eyes, Milo scanned across the walls from left to right over and over again trying to detect a pipe labelled T98. Harry, on the other hand, searched for the pipe on the floor attempting to see if it had fallen down from the crash. Ages have gone by, and it hadn't been easy to find such a small item in such a disorganised room. Not before long, Harry stepped on something small, round and unusual that nearly made him slip and fall on the floor. Milo immediately saw and held him from behind ensuring he didn't get hurt again.

‘Much appreciated, you saved me from falling and preventing an injury.’ Harry expressed.

‘No worries. Anyways, what made you slip?’ Milo asked.

‘I’m not sure yet. Let’s take a look.’ Harry replied.

Milo stretched out his arm towards the ground and grabbed the object with his right hand. It appeared to be a diminutive, white, unusual shape sized similarly to an average hand. It looked like an unusual shaped tube or pipe. He turned it around. It had T98 faintly labelled in black ink on it.

‘Harry!’ Milo shouted in excitement.

‘What?’ Harry replied.

‘I finally found pipe T98 that we’ve been searching for for ages!’ Milo exclaimed excitedly.

‘Actually?’ Harry asked as he walked towards Milo.

‘Yes, for sure.’ Milo responded.

Harry took the pipe from Milo’s hand and closely examined it, ensuring that it was the right one. After a few minutes, Harry opened the pipe and found that there actually was a small portable wire connector contained in the pipe.

‘Have we found the wire connector yet?’ Milo asked while looking at Harry.

‘Yes, I hope it will work this time. We need to hassle outside to test it again.’ Harry responded looking quite concerned.

‘Don’t worry too much, I have a good feeling that this will work.’ Milo assured.

They stood two metres apart from each other face to face. Harry inserted the portable wire connector into the remote control. Instantly, the screen displayed ‘verified’ written with bold letters, then a green tick appeared right after. A few seconds later, a ray of emerald green light emerged through the small space vessel. It slowly rose up into the atmosphere. It was now approximately two metres high from ground level. Milo’s eyes stared at the small space vessel in astonishment. Then he looked at Harry with a big smile. Harry smiled back.

‘Wow! It’s working, it’s flying!’ Milo exclaimed.

‘Agreed. All of our searches have paid off. Now, we must set off on a mission to investigate this unknown planet.’ Harry demanded.

‘Roger that.’ Milo replied.
