Chapter 10 - Work Vs. Driving

Chapter 10 - Work Vs. Driving

The next morning Milo’s alarm went off at six A.M. He still felt very sleepy but knew that he must get up now. He didn’t want to wake Harry up, so he tried to be as quiet as a mouse and headed out at quarter past six. He wasn't hungry at all hence he decided to go straight to FAC first. As he followed the GPS routing on his phone, after around twenty minutes he was able to spot the FAC sign in front of the massive building. Despite the darkness, Milo was able to eventually enter the building. He met Mr. Emiz at seven A.M. sharp and sat down to have a quick chat.

‘Milo, great to see you this early today. How did you get here?’ Mr. Emiz asked.

‘Ah yes I walked here today. It’s a little cold outside but still a good form of exercise.’ Milo replied.

‘Well I hope you are good. I would like to first have a short discussion about the details of this job and explain the contract to you. Also, answer any questions you have before we get started.’ Mr. Emiz explained.

‘Sure, that sounds great.’ Milo replied.

‘Right so the contract is a one year agreement with an annual salary of thirty thousand Boti and annual bonuses for any overtime work. You may take a look at the contract first and ask any future questions you have.’ Mr. Emiz stated.

‘Sure thank you I will have a thorough read through it.’ Milo replied.

Milo took the next ten minutes reading through the employment contract and came across a few things that he was a little unsure about.

‘Mr. Emiz, is it alright if I share this contract with my older brother so he can take a look as well?’ Milo questioned.

‘Sure, go ahead just let me know if you’re ready to sign it or make any adjustments if needed.’ Mr. Emiz replied.

‘Thank you I will!’ Milo replied.

‘Harry, are you awake? I’ve just sent you a message with the contract attached. Can you have a quick read through and check if I should sign it or not.’ Milo asked on the phone with Harry.

‘Um, sure Milo, how come you didn’t let me know before you went out this morning?’ Harry asked.

‘I didn’t want to wake you up. I’m just a little unsure about provision three and seven.’ Milo replied.

‘I see, I think there’s a lot of responsibilities, however I also think it's doable. It's ultimately up to you to decide. I can’t make the decision for you. So what do you think?’ Harry asked.

‘Uh, I think I might give it a shot. I mean if there’s any issues in the future, we can always make changes right.’ Milo asked in uncertainty.

‘I assume yes, but you should always ask any questions you have before you sign the contract since after you have signed it, it is what it is.’ Harry replied.

‘Yes, thanks for reminding me, I will forsure. I’ll call you later!’ Milo replied as he hung up the phone.

‘Mr. Emiz, I just have a question regarding if any issues or disagreements were to occur, would I be able to make any changes to the contract?’ Milo asked.

‘Well depending on what the situation is, we definitely want the best for our employees. If the issue is on our side we can always negotiate, but if it's on your side then we will need to think about it before mankind further changes. Does that make sense?’ Mr. Emiz replied.

‘Yes, thanks for explaining. I think I’m ready to sign the contract.’ Milo commented.

‘Awesome, please sign your signature here and also the date here.’ Mr. Emiz instructed.

‘Right, thanks.’ Milo replied as he finished signing his signature.

‘Alright, do you have any further questions before starting work?’ Mr. Emiz asked.

‘Not as of now, so where should I begin?’ Milo asked.

‘Please follow me, I’ll help you get started on the work needed today.’ Mr. Emiz commanded.

Milo followed Mr. Emiz’s lead to the factory inside. It looked highly automated compared to what factories appear back on Earth. Instead of humans, there were countless cyborgs packaging the orders one by one. Milo looked and felt like the odd one out.

‘So Milo, you may stand here and assist the team with packaging orders first.’ Mr. Emiz stated.

‘Sure, I’ll do my best thank you.’ Milo replied.

‘Well if you encounter any issues you can ask your peers for help or go to my office if you need anything.’ Mr. Emiz replied.

‘Will do, thanks again.’ Milo replied as he began working.

‘Hey, are you new? I haven’t seen you before.’ Okish asked.

‘Ah yes, I am. I just joined the company today. I’m Milo by the way.’ Milo replied.

‘I’m Okish, nice to meet you. I hope you can get used to the packaging stage here. It’s very fast sometimes.’ Okish commented.

‘I’ll try to get the hang of it. How many packages do you usually pack per day?’ Milo questioned.

‘Oooh I don't really keep track but possibly hundreds at least.’ Okish replied.

‘Really? Well that’s a lot.’ Milo replied.

‘Yep it sure is! We better stop talking now, these packages could arrive at any minute.’ Okish suggested.

In a matter of seconds, items and products came out of the deep tunnel. Milo and the rest of their workers began packaging these items as fast as they could. Milo could now see what Okish was blabbering about before.

‘Oh my lord, you’re right about how fast these packages come in. I feel like my hands can’t even keep up!’ Milo blurted.

‘I warned you, just do your best job and that’s fine.’ Okish stated.

As the day went on, Milo felt exhausted just one hour into work. He felt like he could not feel his arms anymore, but he knew it’s only the first day and that he must push through. Meanwhile, Harry on the other hand was just about to head off to SDDC for his first driving lesson. After fifteen minutes he had arrived and waited for the driving instructor to call him in.

‘Harry Quinto, please come with me to your lesson.’ Mr. Zoba requested.

‘Hi, sure I’m coming.’ Harry replied.

‘I’m Mr. Zoba, I’ll be your driving instructor for the rest of the course.’ Mr. Zoba introduced himself.

‘Great, nice to meet you. I’m Harry. So how long will the lessons last?’ Harry asked.

‘Well every lesson will be two hours long and you have ten lessons in total.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘So after ten days, will I be able to take the driving test?’ Harry asked.

‘Yes, but you will also need to complete fifty hours of supervised driving before the test.’ Mr. Zoba added.

‘So will you be able to supervise me as I don’t know anyone around here.’ Harry questioned.

‘Sure, we can do that after our lessons. However, only the lessons would be free of charge. The supervised driving would cost you thirty Boti per hour.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘Right I see, I’m actually new to this planet. I’m currently unemployed, so would it be possible to take out a loan for this amount and pay you back once I obtain a job?’ Harry asked.

‘Err, I’ll have to think about it. Do you have any relatives who do have a source of income currently?’ Mr. Zoba asked.

‘Well, my brother just started work today, however I’m not sure what his decision was. Our last conversation this morning about whether he should sign the working contract or not. So I’ll need to confirm with him as well.’ Harry explained.

‘I see, I think we can get started with the lesson first and go from there.’ Mr. Zoba suggested.

‘Great, thank you.’ Harry replied.

Mr. Zoba led Harry into the space drone. It was Harry’s first time ever inside the space drone. The interior was about the same size as a helicopter but with all the gear a spaceship has.

‘So we will start with the basics first. Are you familiar with any of the buttons or controls here?’ Mr. Zoba asked.

‘Uh, I’ve never been in one of these before, I think we should go over them one by one first.’ Harry replied.

‘Sure, alright let's start with the main control system. So here is the lever located in the center of the vehicle. There’s also a manual pedal located on the bottom right. The pedal is used to control the speed of the space drone so basically how fast or slow you would like to drive.’ Mr. Zoba explained.

‘Right I see, so are there traffic lights or signs whilst flying the space drone?’ Harry asked.

‘Yes, there is. They are reflected lights and are displayed in the air whilst you fly the space drone. It might sound a little confusing but this is how we’re able to build these traffic signs in the sky.’ Mr. Zoba explained.

‘That sounds super cool, how come I cannot see any of these signs when I’m walking on the ground?’ Harry questioned.

‘As I said, these signs are reflected hence you won’t be able to see these signs on the ground but you definitely will in mid air as you drive. It was also designed to create less distractions for residents living on this planet.’ Mr. Zoba explained.

‘Great, well what’s next?’ Harry asked.

‘Well there’s another lever called the Yopiz located on your left which is used to control turning left and right directions.’ Mr. Zoba stated.

‘Right, I think I’ll need some practice to get the hang of these controls. Is there a practice area where I can use these controls?’ Harry asked.

‘Yes this area is built for practising. You may start slowly by using the controls to fly in a straight line first. Just to let you know, I do have an instant stop pedal at my side so if you ever need I will stop the space drone for you.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘Awesome, I feel much safer now. So I will start the engine right now.’ Harry replied.

As Harry started the controls, driving in a straight line was easier than he thought. Mr. Zoba then instructed him to complete a variety of left and right turns as well as driving in a loop for the rest of the lesson.

‘Well, it has come to the end of our two hour lesson. You did an excellent job today considering it's your first lesson. You’re also one of the fastest students I know.’ Mr. Zoba commented.

‘Wow thank you! I was hesitant to drive a space drone at first but as I got more familiar with the controls, it became more comfortable.’ Harry replied.

‘Glad to hear that, well I’ll see you back here tomorrow for our second lesson.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘Sure, thanks see you tomorrow!’ Harry replied as he left the space drone and walked back to the front desk.

Meanwhile Milo was exhausted from packaging items one after the other non stop.

‘Okish, I really need a short break from this. I don’t think I can continue with this packaging.’ Milo asked.

‘If you really need a break, then go ahead. But there’s only less than half an hour left until lunch break.’ Okish replied.

‘Alright I guess, I’m just not used to packaging this many items in a short period of time.’ Milo responded as he sighed.

At noon, Milo finally can take a break from this tiresome job. He instantly thought to call Harry back first.

‘Hey Milo what’s up?’ Harry asked.

‘I’m so tired, I can barely move Harry. I didn’t think this job could be this exhausting.’ Milo replied.

‘So did you end up signing the contract?’ Harry asked.

‘Well yes, but I’m starting to regret it already.’ Milo replied.

‘So what do you want to do about this now?’ Harry asked.

‘I’m not sure. I do have mixed feelings about this. I do wanna stay for a little longer to see if I can cope with the pressure otherwise I might need to quit.’ Milo replied.

‘Right, I’m open to whatever your decision is, as long as you’re happy I’m happy as well. Remember to always value your health first over anything.’ Harry replied.

‘Thanks Harry, I will. How is it at your end?’ Milo questioned.

‘Uh, well I just finished my first lesson for space drone driving. I’d say it went pretty well. So should I catch you for lunch?’ Harry asked.

‘Umm just hold on a sec, I’ll need to check how much time I have for the lunch break.’ Milo replied.

‘Okish, how long do we have for lunch break and are we allowed to go outside for lunch?’ Milo asked.

‘We have exactly a one hour lunch break each day and we actually have a canteen for all workers, so you need to have lunch here since there’s no restaurants near FAC.’ Okish replied.

‘Right I see, thanks.’ Milo replied.

‘Harry, are you still there?’ Milo asked.

‘Yep.’ Harry replied.

‘I just asked one of my coworkers and he said we only can have lunch here and it's for workers only.’ Milo explained.

‘Well I guess I’ll have lunch on my own as well and I’ll see you in the afternoon.’ Harry replied.

‘Yeah well I better get going before my lunch break is over. See you after work.’ Milo replied as he ended the phone call.

‘Okish, can we have lunch together?’ Milo asked.

‘Sure, I’ll take you to our canteen.’ Okish replied.

‘Thanks.’ Milo replied.

Okish led Milo up to level two where the canteen is located. The canteen looked very similar to the cafeteria in the main building except for all the workers.

‘So here is the canteen for us, you can take anything you want from the pantry. It’s technically a self-serve buffet to be honest.’ Okish replied.

‘I see, thank you!’ Milo replied.

‘No worries, you can have lunch with me if you’d like as well.’ Okish commented.

‘Sure, I’d love that. I’ll meet you up at the table.’ Milo replied.

‘So Milo, how did you feel about your first day so far?’ Okish asked.

‘One word. Exhausting! Definitely need more time to get used to the workload.’ Milo replied.

‘Yeah I totally agree. My first day was exhausting as well, but with time I got used to it.’ Okish replied.

‘So how long have you been here, I mean working at FAC?’ Milo questioned.

‘Oooh let me think, it’s about a year now.’ Okish replied.

‘I’ve always had a question I wanted to ask someone here but didn’t want them to take it as an insult. Do you mind if I ask you, it's solely from a curious perspective.’ Milo asked.

‘Sure, what is it?’ Okish asked.

‘I’ve always wondered since you’re a cyborg, do you guys feel the same amount of labour as a human. I know it's probably a stupid question but are you guys automated in any sort of way that can make working these jobs easier by any chance if you get what I mean?’ Milo asked.

‘Well, first of all it's not a stupid question. I obviously don't have any idea how much labour a human feels, however I can assure you that we are not automated or controlled by anything. At least that's what I know.’ Okish replied.

‘Right thank you. I’ve already thought cyborgs are made by machines so they would have some sort of power over you guys but I guess it’s not the case.’ Milo replied.

‘Yeah, so I’m also very curious about where you came from. I’ve never seen a human in my life.’ Okish questioned.

‘Ah long story short, I came all the way from planet Earth with my brother. We’re just hoping for a way to get back home but our spaceship broke down in the middle of our mission. So we are technically stuck here for now.’ Milo explained.

‘Well that's an interesting story, I’d love to visit planet Earth in the future. I find it quite tedious here.’ Okish commented.

‘Really, I find this planet super fascinating actually. There’s so much new things and high tech things I’ve never seen back on Earth.’ Milo replied.

‘I guess we have similar minds, we all find new places more interesting than the ones we always live in on a daily basis.’ Okish replied.

‘Yeah same, well let’s stop talking and finish our lunch before our one hour time has passed.’ Milo suggested.

‘Agreed.’ Okish replied.

As Milo and Okish finished up their meals in the remainder of the time, Harry had returned back to the hotel and had a quick lunch back there.

‘I think we should head back before one P.M.’ Milo suggested.

‘Yeah if you’re finished then let's go.’ Okish replied.

‘I’m done.’ Milo replied.

They both headed down to the factory to start the afternoon shift. In the next few minutes, Mr. Emiz approached Milo.

‘Milo, just wanted to check in on how you are going?’ Mr. Emiz asked.

‘I’m doing alright thanks, still getting used to the fast paced environment here.’ Milo replied.

‘That sounds great. Would you like to take a break from packaging this afternoon?’ Mr. Emiz asked.

‘Is there something else you would like me to work on?’ Milo asked.

‘Ah yes, would you be able to monitor the machines here?’ Mr. Emiz asked.

‘Sure, so what would I need to do?’ Milo asked.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

‘You just need to watch these machines and fix any issues such as decluttering the space if needed etcetera. I’ll show you how these buttons work.’ Mr. Emiz explained.

‘I see, thank you.’ Milo replied.

‘So usually we have less products that need to be packed in the afternoons, however these machines I'd say get a little lazy so we always require some of our workers to monitor these machines here and there. Here is the start button in green and the stop one in red. The other buttons basically are labelled in Botilish and are mainly used to move the item in certain directions. You can take a look and organise products into different categories.’ Mr. Emiz explained.

‘Okay, I understand. So I basically need to organise all the products into different categories and monitor these machines and fix any issues when needed. Is that correct?’ Milo asked.

‘Yes that's pretty much it.’ Mr. Emiz replied.

‘Cool, I got it. I’ll do my best with the given tasks.’ Milo replied.

‘Thanks, just let me know if you need anything throughout the afternoon.’ Mr. Emiz commented.

‘Sure, I will.’ Milo replied.

‘Hey, are you monitoring these machines as well?’ Milo asked.

‘Uh yes, that's my role at FAC. Are you new here?’ Pozi asked.

‘Yes, it's my first day here. I’ve been assigned to monitor and organise items with this machine. Can I follow your lead first, I just don’t want to mess it up.’ Milo requested.

‘Sure, I’ll help. I’m Pozi by the way.’ Pozi replied.

‘I’m Milo, and thanks.’ Milo replied.

As Milo followed Pozi’s instructions, he was able to grasp a better sense of what needs to be done. He continued with the work up until the end of the workday. He felt much more relieved in the afternoon than what he did in the morning hours. Finally five P.M. had come and he was ready to head back to the hotel.

‘Thanks again Pozi for the help this afternoon, I’ll see you tomorrow then.’ Milo commented.

‘No problems at all! Glad I could help you to familiarise yourself with the machines here.’ Pozi replied.

‘Bye Pozi and bye Okish, I will see you both tomorrow!’ Milo exclaimed as he was about to leave the factory.

‘Well Milo, I’m very impressed with what you have accomplished on your first day at work. Do you have any questions you wanted to ask me before you leave?’ Mr. Emiz asked as he approached Milo.

‘Thanks for your guidance and help to make me feel welcome at FAC. I currently don’t have any further questions on my mind but I'll definitely let you know if I have any. Will see you tomorrow, Mr. Emiz!’ Milo replied.

‘No worries Milo, enjoy the rest of your evening!’ Mr. Emiz remarked.

‘You too, bye!’ Milo exclaimed as he waved goodbye to Mr. Emiz.

As Milo left FAC, he thought to call Harry to let him know that his work was finished.

‘Hey Milo, how are you going so far?’ Harry asked as he picked up the phone call.

‘I’m good, just planning to head back to the hotel.’ Milo replied.

‘How was work in the afternoon? I thought you were too exhausted in the morning.’ Harry inquired.

‘Ah yes, the afternoon was much more chill. I had to just monitor and press a few buttons on the machines to ensure that they are working properly. Man, the morning was too hectic. I think I just need some more time to get used to the environment.’ Milo responded after taking a deep breath out.

‘Well, that's great to hear, are you good to walk back on your own or should I come to walk with you?’ Harry asked.

‘Uh it’s up to you, I’m fine on my own as well. Just need another ten minutes or so.’ Milo answered.

‘Cool, well I’ll be waiting for you back here then.’ Harry replied.

‘Yeah, talk to you soon.’ Milo added as he ended the call.

Milo spent the remainder of the time heading back to the hotel. Meanwhile Harry was memorising all the controls that Mr. Zoda had taught him earlier this morning whilst waiting for Milo to return. After five minutes, Milo had arrived back at the hotel room.

‘Welcome back Milo!’ Harry blurted.

‘Hi Harry, I really need some rest right now. My hands and legs are tired.’ Milo sprouted as he jumped onto the bed.

‘Well you can have as much rest as you need since you're back here.’ Harry chuckled.

‘You’re right, I’ll talk to you whilst laying on the bed.’ Milo replied.

‘Sure thing, so do you have anything on your mind?’ Harry questioned.

‘Ah let me think… wait actually yes. Remember that Yoki stated that we’d need to pay for everything ourselves after one of us obtains a job. So I’m wondering does that start from now or when?’ Milo asked.

‘Oh, I do remember that now that you have brought it up. I’m not sure, I think it's best to ask Yoki about this.’ Harry replied.

‘Right, should I call Yoki now?’ Milo asked.

‘Sure.’ Harry answered.

‘Cool, I’ll just find Yoki’s phone number real quick… Okay, I’m calling him now.’ Milo replied.

‘Hi Yoki, this is Milo speaking. Are you available to discuss something right now?’ Milo questioned.

‘Yeah I’m free to chat, what’s up?’ Yoki asked.

‘Right, I just wanted to ask about something you have mentioned before. So I was wondering if we need to pay for everything ourselves after I got the job at FAC?’ Milo questioned.

‘Ah right, have you received your paycheck yet?’ Yoki asked.

‘Not yet.’ Milo responded.

‘Do you know when you will receive it?’ Yoki asked.

‘Um, I remember it's paid weekly, so in about a week from now.’ Milo replied.

‘Well, the initial plan was for you both to pay bills on your own after one of you has started working. However, considering that you have not received your paycheck yet. I think we can extend the time up until you have received your first paycheck. How does that sound?’ Yoki explained.

‘Thank you so much Yoki, that sounds much fairer. We really appreciate it!’ Milo replied.

‘No problem at all! We always want what's best for foreign visitors, but we still do need to apply some rules and restrictions for them to follow.’ Yoki explained.

‘Yep, we understand. Well have a great evening ahead. We will call you if we ever need something.’ Milo replied.

‘You too, enjoy the rest of your night.’ Yoki responded as he ended the phone.

‘Harry, I have some great news! Yoki just informed me that we can have an extension and start paying our bills after I have received my first paycheck.’ Milo blurted.

‘Really, well that’s a relief! Otherwise I don’t even know how we can pay our bills without any monetary assets.’ Harry replied.

‘Yeah me too, well how is it on your end?’ Milo asked.

‘I think it's going well. My driving instructor is very informative. I think I can learn much faster than expected.’ Harry replied.

‘That’s awesome, I think everything is going smoothly so far!’ Milo applauded.

‘Milo, there is something I want to mention. Other than my driving lessons, I do require an additional thirty hours of supervised training in order to obtain a licence. I currently don’t know any surprised drivers around here so my driving instructor, Mr. Zoda said that he can supervise me. The problem is that he requires to be paid for supervised driving and it's thirty Boti per hour and I was wondering if I could use a portion of your paycheck to pay for this?’ Harry asked.

‘Right I see, of course you can. I’m just thinking if my paycheck will be enough to cover for this and the rest of our bills?’ Milo replied.

‘Yeah that’s what I was thinking as well. I reckon we must prioritise our bills and living expenses first and whatever is rest we can use that to pay for the supervised driving sessions. Do you know how much your salary is for the role?’ Harry inquired.

‘Uh I remember it’s thirty thousand Boti annually plus any bonuses for overtime work.’ Milo replied.

‘Right, just let me use the calculator to roughly see how much that is in a week.’ Harry responded.

‘Sure, good idea.’ Milo replied.

‘Alright, so after using your base salary of thirty thousand Boti, I have calculated that your weekly pay would be approximately $576.92 Boti.’ Harry stated.

‘That is barely enough to live, let alone pay for additional costs.’ Milo blurted.

‘I know, but we can work through this. So thirty Boti per hour for a total of thirty hours would come down to $900 Boti. That would equate to nearly two weeks of your paycheck. I think I’ll need to negotiate with Mr. Zoda to see if we can reduce the cost.’ Harry replied.

‘I hope so, otherwise I think we're doomed. Best to make it free of charge.’ Milo suggested.

‘I don't think that's possible, but I’ll do the best I can.’ Harry responded.

‘Thanks, if it’s not possible then that’s okay. We can figure something out to fit our budget.’ Milo replied.

‘Yeah that’s the most important thing right now. I think let's go have dinner first and come back ready for tomorrow. What’d you reckon?’ Harry suggested.

‘I’m down! We have another busy day ahead of us.’ Milo replied.

The next morning, Milo got woken up by his alarm at six A.M. Harry woke up as well due to the sound of Milo’s alarm. Milo got ready for the day and was about to head out for breakfast.

‘Harry, I’m heading out now. Have a good day.’ Milo commented.

‘You too Milo enjoy your day at work and be sure to have some breakfast before you go.’ Harry reminded.

‘I will, thanks!’ Milo replied as he left and shut the door.

He headed to level to get something to eat for breakfast and headed out the building to FAC for work. It’s still quite dark outside, but Milo was determined to get through it and used his torch on his phone to guide the road ahead of him. After twenty minutes he had arrived.

‘Greetings Milo, good to see you again?’ Mr. Emiz commented.

‘Good morning Mr. Emiz, I hope I’m not too late.’ Milo replied.

‘No not at all, you are just in time to start work.’ Mr. Emiz replied.

‘Great, so is it the same routine as what I did yesterday?’ Milo questioned.

‘Yes pretty much, you can start with the packaging first and I’ll let you know if you need to work on something else.’ Mr. Emiz replied.

‘I see, thank you!’ Milo exclaimed.

As Milo carried on throughout the day, he felt more comfortable than yesterday. Meanwhile, Harry had just arrived at SDDC for his official second driving lesson this morning. Harry wanted to bring up the supervised driving cost however is still unsure on when it would be the right time to do that.

‘Good morning Harry, are you ready for your second lesson?’ Mr. Zoba asked.

‘Yes, I am!’ Harry replied.

‘Right, well we shall get started.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘So what are we learning today?’ Harry asked.

‘I will be teaching you the basics and safety precautions on driving the space drone and we will continue on the exercises that you have practised yesterday. Is that alright?’ Mr. Zoba explained.

‘Sure, that sounds awesome!’ Harry replied.

Mr. Zoba carried out the lesson. After the two hour lesson, Harry felt profoundly more confident in driving a space drone. Harry thought this was the perfect opportunity to negotiate the cost with Mr. Zoba.

‘Mr. Zoba, with the supervised driving sessions, I wanted to see if there is any room for negotiation.’ Harry questioned.

‘Ah sure, what are you looking for?’ Mr. Zoba asked.

‘Well I currently don’t have a source of income and my brother just got a job two days ago at a factory however it’s not enough to cover the fee for the supervised sessions. So I was thinking if it's possible to reduce the cost of these sessions?’ Harry asked.

‘Well, thirty Boti per hour is the standard cost, however after considering your circumstances, I think we can cut it down to fifteen Boti per hour. That’s the lowest I can offer you.’ Mr. Zoba explained.

‘Thank you so much Mr. Zoba, I think that is manageable with some good budgeting skills.’ Harry replied.

‘No worries, just let me know if you have any more questions or concerns. I’d always be glad to help you!’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘Thanks again! So when can we start those supervised sessions?’ Harry asked.

‘Are you able to make the payment now?’ Mr. Zoba questioned back.

‘I currently don’t have anything with me and my brother, Milo, will only receive his first paycheck at the end of this week. Is it possible to make the payment at the end of the week?’ Harry asked.

‘Umm, we usually do not accept this but I can see that you are good hearted. However, we do need to sign a contract for this to occur. Is that okay with you?’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘Sure, I'm alright with that. You see, I really need to pass the test and a SD driver's licence in order to get my job. It’s currently on hold right now.’ Harry explained.

‘I understand, well I will get a contract ready after lunch and we can start the first supervised session this afternoon if you’re ready for it.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘Yes, that sounds great! I’ll see you again this afternoon.’ Harry responded.

‘See you soon.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

Harry left SDDC and headed back for lunch. He didn’t know if he was able to go out to other cafes or restaurants as they don’t know his circumstances. That’s why it would be best to go back to the hotel and come back to SDDC in the afternoon. Milo on the other hand was about to head off for lunch as well. He wanted to inform Harry on his day so far first.

‘Hello Milo! How was your day?’ Harry asked in English as he picked up his phone call.

‘Today was much better than yesterday. I did have to do a lot of packaging but I think I'm starting to get the hang of working in this environment.’ Milo replied.

‘Glad you are getting more comfortable at FAC. I do have some exciting news as well. Do you want to know or I can share it after you have finished work?’ Harry inquired.

‘Come on Harry just spill it! You’re making me overly curious.’ Milo replied.

‘Alright, so I had a discussion with Mr. Zoba and he agreed to reduce the cost of the supervised sessions by fifty percent so it comes down to fifteen Boti per hour instead of thirty.’ Harry shared.

‘Well that’s an improvement, but do you think we can cover that amount even though it's reduced?’ Milo asked.

‘I know that the total is definitely under your weekly paycheck, and with some good budgeting we can make it happen.’ Harry replied.

‘Well if you say so then I’m cool with it.’ Milo added.

‘Mr. Zoba also agreed that I can pay this at the end of this week on a contract agreement. So everything should work out in the end.’ Harry replied.

‘Sounds good, so when will the contract agreement start?’ Milo questioned.

‘Not sure yet, but Mr. Zoba said that I would be able to sign it later this afternoon, so we’ll see from there.’ Harry replied.

‘Cool, well have a great lunch Harry and I will call you later if I need to!’ Milo replied.

‘Sure, enjoy your lunch break as well, bye.’ Harry answered back as he ended the call.

Milo headed straight to the cafeteria at FAC for lunch, simultaneously Harry went to get some lunch at level two of the hotel they’re currently staying at. After Harry had finished his meal, he went back to SDDC to see Mr. Zoba as they agreed on. Milo went down to level one for his afternoon shift.

‘Hi Konzi, do you know where Mr. Zoba is?’ Harry asked as he walked to the front desk at SDDC.

‘Just let me double check, I’ll let him know you are here.’ Konzi replied.

‘Alright, thank you.’ Harry responded.

As Harry waited patiently for ten minutes, Mr. Zoba walked down with a digital piece of paper in his hands.

‘Good to see you back again, Harry.’ Mr. Zoba commented.

‘You too.’ Harry replied.

‘So I have our contract agreement right here. Could you please have a thorough read through to ensure you do agree to all the provisions. If you have any further questions, we can always discuss later.’ Mr. Zoba explained as he passed the contract onto Harry’s hands.

‘Sure, thank you.’ Harry replied.

As Harry read through the contract, he was satisfied with the agreement and it basically reflected what Mr. Zoba discussed with him earlier this morning. He read through it one more time to ensure that he didn’t miss anything and was ready to sign the agreement.

‘Mr. Zoba, I have finished reading the contract, may I sign it now?’ Harry asked.

‘If you’re happy and don’t have any questions for me, then go ahead.’ Mr. Zoba confirmed.

‘Sure, thanks.’ Harry replied as he took out a black pen and signed the agreement and date.

‘Thank you! So when would you like to start the supervised driving sessions?’ Mr. Zoba asked.

‘I can start anytime, whenever you are available.’ Harry replied promptly.

‘I see, so I’m available for three hours right now. I reckon we can break these sessions across ten days. That would be three hours per day. How does that sound?’ Mr. Zoba suggested.

‘Yeah I think that’s great, thanks. It also aligns with our plan with the ten days driving lesson as well.’ Harry added.

‘Well let's go then.’ Mr. Zoba commanded.

Harry followed Mr. Zoba to the space drone and they officially had begun the supervised driving. After three hours had passed by, it was already five P.M. Harry had finished the session and Milo had just finished work for the day.

‘Thanks a lot for the session Mr. Zoba, I really appreciate it!’ Harry commented.

‘Glad to be at my service. I will see you tomorrow.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

As Harry left SDDC, Milo left FAC as well. He was just about to call Harry but he received a call from him instead.

‘Harry, how have you been? I was just gonna call you.’ Milo asked.

‘Ah what a coincidence! I wanted to call to see how you are going?’ Harry questioned back.

‘Well, I’m just about to head back to the hotel, just finished work for the day. What about you?’ Milo replied.

‘I’m on my way back to the hotel as well. I have just finished my three hours of supervised training. So I think that we might be able to meet up on the way back.’ Harry explained.

‘Really? Well that’s awesome. So did you end up signing the agreement?’ Milo asked.

‘Ah yes I did. I’ve carefully read through it and I think the terms are quite fair.’ Harry responded.

‘Well I guess the earlier the better! I’ll meet you back at building 101.’ Milo chuckled.

‘Cool, see you there.’ Harry replied as he ended the call.

After ten or so minutes, they both had arrived back at the front yard of building 101. They headed back up to their room and sat down for a short break.

‘Good to be back huh?’ Harry stated.

‘Yeah, I’m exhausted after working all day. I better have some rest!’ Milo replied.

‘Well, let's both get some rest first and head off for some dinner later.’ Harry suggested.

‘Sure, I really need that.’ Milo responded.

The brothers stayed to their plan and the evening went by in a blink of an eye. Soon the next day had arrived. For the next five days, Harry and Milo carried out their daily lives as usual. Harry had finally completed his first week of SD driving lessons as well as eighteen hours of supervised driving. Milo had just finished his first week at work and was about to leave for the day.

‘Milo, congrats on your achievement for this week! Here is your paycheck. You may go to a local bank to credit it to your account.’ Mr. Emiz stated as he approached Milo.

‘Oh thank you very much. So do all employees at FAC get paid via check?’ Milo questioned.

‘Yes, they do.’ Mr. Emiz replied.

‘I see thanks. Well I better get an account set up and make the deposit!’ Milo chuckled.

‘Great, enjoy the rest of the evening.’ Mr. Emiz commented.

‘You too, have a nice one Mr. Emiz!’ Milo exclaimed.

As Milo left excitedly with his paycheck, Harry on the other hand was about to leave SDDC as well.

'Harry, would you be able to make the payment tomorrow?’ Mr. Zoba asked.

‘Hopefully yes, but just let me double check with Milo.’ Harry replied.

‘Sure.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘Hey Milo, have you finished work yet? I was wondering, have you received your paycheck today?’ Harry questioned.

‘Yes, I’m on my way back and I have just gotten my paycheck.’ Milo replied.

‘Right thanks, it’s just that Mr. Zoba was reminding me that the payment is due for tomorrow. Do you think we can make it in time?’ Harry asked.

‘I’ll need to deposit this check to the bank first and go from there. Is the payment via cash or card?’ Milo questioned back.

‘Hold on, let me ask.’ Harry responded.

‘Mr. Zoba, I was wondering will the payment be via cash or card?’ Harry asked.

‘We can do either, but preferably by card.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘Got it, thanks.’ Harry answered back.

‘Milo, so we can do either one but preferably by card.’ Harry informed.

‘I see. Well, I still need to make a deposit and get a new bank card. So I think it really depends on what the bank does. Just tell him that we will try our best to pay as soon as we can.’ Milo replied.

‘Sure, thanks. I’ll call you later.’ Harry replied as he hung up.

‘Okay Mr. Zoba, after I discussed it with Milo, said that he needs to go to the bank to get a bank card first. As soon as he gets the card, then I can make the payment. Is that alright?’ Harry asked.

‘Yes, just inform me once you guys have that sorted out and we can continue with the supervised sessions.’ Mr. Zoda replied.

‘I will, thank you!’ Harry answered as he left SDDC.

Harry headed back to meet Milo back at the hotel. As they arrived at a similar time, Milo thought it was a good time to call Yoki.

‘Harry, should I call Yoki up? I’m not sure where a local bank is. I think it's best for Yoki to take us there if he is available right now.’ Milo questioned.

‘I think that’s a good plan. Let’s ask Yoki first.’ Harry replied.

‘Okay let me call him now.’ Milo replied.

‘Hello Milo, how have you guys been?’ Yoki asked.

‘Hi Yoki, it’s been a long time since I’ve contacted you. I was wondering if you know any local banks around here. I just received my first paycheck today and would need to make a deposit.’ Milo asked.

‘Yes, I do. Do you want me to take you there?’ Yoki asked.

‘Uh if you are free right now then yes but if not then I could go by myself as well.’ Milo replied.

‘I am available right now, so I’ll meet you in around ten minutes.’ Yoki stated.

‘Sure, thanks a lot.’ Milo replied as he ended the phone call.

‘Well, Yoki agreed to meet us here in ten minutes.’ Milo stated.

‘Great, well let's wait for him then.’ Harry suggested.

As they both waited for Yoki, Milo could see him in the distance. Yoki led them to a local branch nearby. It was just a five minute walk from building 101. Yoki then helped Milo with depositing his check and opening up an account with a bank card as well.

‘Alright, so we have your details set up and your bank card will be mailed to you later today and you should be able to receive it by tomorrow morning.’ Ms. Clovis, the banking assistant stated.

‘Right, thank you! So do you guys have a banking app to track my income, expenses, etc.’ Milo asked.

‘Yes, we do. You just need to install it on your phone. It's called Xbank.’ Ms. Clovis replied.

‘I see thanks. So has the check been deposited to my account already?’ Milo asked.

‘Yes, it has already. Any more questions?’ Ms. Clovis asked.

‘Nope, that’s all, thank you.’ Milo replied as they left the bank.

‘Well, that’s all set up. You guys can officially start paying for yourselves once your card has arrived.’ Yoki stated.

‘I guess so! We still need to pay Harry’s driving instructor for the supervised sessions as well.’ Milo replied.

‘I see, well I know that you guys can definitely sort this out and still manage to pay for your necessary essentials.’ Yoki commented.

‘I hope so.’ Milo replied.

‘Well, it’s been great catching up with you both. I’m always here if you need anything. See you both soon!’ Yoki stated.

‘Thanks we really appreciate all the times you have helped us.’ Harry replied as he and Milo waved goodbye at Yoki.

‘Well that went smooth. I reckon we can get it back to Mr. Zoba tomorrow afternoon if the card arrives on time.’ Harry expressed.

‘Yeah, after that, we really need to see how much to allocate for our daily spendings.’ Milo stated.

‘Agreed, let’s head back to calculate the costs.’ Harry suggested

‘Sure.’ Milo replied.

The next morning, Milo received a letter from XBank. As he opened it, there was a short note with his new bank card attached inside.

‘Harry, I just received my bank card. Should we go to SDDC now or later today?’ Milo questioned.

‘I think we can go now.’ Harry replied.

‘Right, well let’s go then.’ Milo added.

As they headed out towards SDDC, Mr. Zoba was also at the front doing some paperwork.

‘Mr. Zoba, I have come to make the payment as we discussed yesterday.’ Harry stated.

‘Great to see you and you must be Milo?’ Mr. Zoba asked.

‘Yes, I sure am!’ Milo replied.

‘I’ve heard many good things about you. So it comes down to eighteen hours of supervised sessions which is a total of $270 Boti for today.’ Mr. Zoba stated.

‘Right, you can use my card.’ Milo replied as he passed his card to Harry.

‘Sure, thanks.’ Harry commented as he scanned Milo’s card onto the machine Mr. Zoba is holding.

‘Alright, that has been approved and thank you both for making the payment in time.’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘No worries, that needs to be done anyways. So we came as quickly as we could.’ Harry explained.

‘Well enjoy the rest of your day! Bye bye!’ Mr. Zoba replied.

‘You too.’ Harry commented as he and Milo left SDDC.

‘Well I’m glad we got that out of our way, but that was basically half of my paycheck.’ Milo stated.

‘Don’t worry Milo, as soon as I get the job, I promise to pay you back. At the end of the day, I’m doing this to help us to be one step closer to getting back to Earth.’ Harry reassured Milo.

‘I get where you’re coming from, I just hope we can work with whatever is left in my bank account.’ Milo replied.

‘We will.’ Harry responded in a confident manner.
