I studied the small stack of papers in front of me carefully. The papers recorded the names of two, Rachael Flake and Jane Machat, people that had suffered greatly. They were now two people I could try to save.
The papers recorded confidential information about them. However I wasn’t going to use that information for nefarious purposes. I first looked for the girl that was currently attending the school. It was Jane Machat, she was two years higher than me, her classroom 3-B.
Second, I looked for Rachael’s address. If she wasn’t attending school it meant I could only go to her. Luckily this time the location was not too far away, unless some weird circumstance happens like with Haven.
Lastly, I looked over the whole stack looking for any important information. However I didn’t find anything that was special given no context. Part of me felt like there was something important, but I didn’t know what.
It was the next week before I took action. In the morning I called Abby and Bell over to move forward my current plan.
“You need to ask about Rachael Flake.” I told them, emphasizing the name lest they forget again.
“Is she the next one?” Abby asked, looking downward. I nodded.
“Next what?” Bell asked.
“I will tell you later, for now… help, please.” I spoke with sincerity. How long would I use people without telling them why?
“How did you find her so fast?” Abby asked suspiciously. Abby seemed to be smarter than she looked.
“Does that matter?” I answered. Thinking she would surely yell at me if I told her the truth.
“It does.” She responded.
“Why?” I asked coldly.
“Because.. Because you might be sacrificing something for it.” She answered quickly but hesitantly.
“Don’t worry then, I didn’t have to give anything for this.” Strictly true. I didn’t physically give anything for the information. However the opportunity did cost me.
“Fine… by the way what do you want to know about Rachael?” Abby said, first sighing.
“I need to know why she isn’t at school? If anything weird happened to her recently? Or if she had been acting weird? Also knowing when any of this happened would be good.” I quickly came up with what I needed. Bell finished taking notes and happily walked off with Abby.
Now it was my turn, I had to get this one done by myself. During lunch I walked down the halls, noticing my ‘Royal Treatment’, I played along. My walk changed to an arrogant swagger. My shoulders too wide and my pace too casual. Walking over to the third year classes like the Emperor. I Opened the door to class B and immediately noticed stares quickly focusing on me.
“Where is Jane Machat?” I asked with my most authoritative tone. Many heads turned looking towards a desk.
“Why are you looking for me, Emperor-pfft-Devil-pfft-Eyes.” A girl said before breaking out in laughter. I couldn’t put too much blame on her, the nickname was cringe. The girl in question was sitting in desk with a big smile on her face. She had blonde hair and was above average height for someone her age.
“My name is Azure and I need to discuss something with you.” I said, thinking deeply about anything else would be too annoying.
“What would that be?” She asked.
“I don’t think you would want to discuss it here.” I answered.
“Do you want something from me?” She asked slowly, turning her careless face to a smiling suspicious one.
“Yes, however it's not exactly like you're going to give me something.” I said.
“Fine, let's go.” She said before standing and walking away. The boys in the class all looked at me with daggers.
We walked out of the building and found a secluded spot with a table. After we sat Jane stared at me with deep emotion in her eyes.
“What do you want?” She asked calmly with a smile.
“I want you to testify.” I said not holding back my true intentions.
“Against who?” She was obviously unwilling to let go of any information.
“Kurt.” As soon as she heard the name she tried to hide a pained expression. Obviously a trauma that wouldn’t heal easily.
“How do you know this?” She asked with a suspicious glare.
“Because I have the devil's eyes.” I answered. Jane's face was left unimpressed.
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
“Why do you want to do this?” Jane asked.
“Do I need a reason?” I asked, considering my own determination.
“Don’t think that an outsider like you can just suddenly get in my problems. I experienced something horrible. You can’t make light of that so easily.” She said.
“Did you know he assaulted five others?” As I spoke she was surprised to hear this information.
“Do you think we shouldn’t take action against him?” I asked.
“It’s not that easy.” She said, “Kurt’s father is rich, and his uncle has influence in the police.”
“Do you think he shouldn’t have to pay for what he did?” I asked, ignoring the future difficulties.
“Did you not hear-” She started but I interrupted.
“Do you want him to pay?” I said.
“Yes.” She finally gave up.
“Then don’t worry about the other things, I will handle them all.” I said with a certain arrogance. It was easier this way, she only had to worry about healing, I would deal with all the dirty work behind the scenes.
“What do you think you can handle? you're just a kid.” She said.
“I can handle it fine, it's not like I haven’t dealt with the police before.” I said.
“You've dealt with the police before?” She said with suspicion.
“More importantly you will testify right?” I asked, trying to change the subject.
“If you solve the problems.” She answered tiredly.
“How many of us have you gotten?” She asked suddenly.
“I have found three of you, I still haven’t met the third.” I said.
“Almost half.” She said while thinking. A sudden thought crossed my mind.
“Do you recognize any of these names?” I asked while showing her the list. She looked and then froze fear in her eyes.
“Katy Hoover.” She said looking down with a solemn expression.
“So you know her.” I stated, an equally solemn expression showed on my face. To have that happen not only to yourself but someone close to you. However if you felt that much pain you must have great sympathy.
“I need to talk to her, would you come with me?” I asked.
“What makes you think I am going to tell you where she is?”
At this point I was annoyed. She would argue over each tiny problem. Even with my stance on her trauma it wasn’t easy to ignore.
“What makes me think… Maybe the fact that I am the only person willing to help.” I said coldly, Jane was shocked.
“Bu-” She started but I interrupted.
“But maybe it's better for her to stay out of this mess. Do you really think that?” My temper running short.
“We-” Once again.
“Do you think that she doesn’t deserve to move forward? Do you think she is pitiful enough that you should just take care of her? Coddling her will only break her future at this point.” I said annoyed.
“You think you're being thoughtful, but you really don’t think enough. Is it that easy to get over this trauma not to mention what happens afterward. I may not know what it's like to be assaulted, but I do know what it's like to be abandoned. Stop sitting on your high horse and try to see how the world works. None of it is easy, in fact it shouldn’t be easy.” I ranted, feeling my bottled emotions blow by any filter I had. This was not the first time this happened and I was starting to think this was a problem.
Jane fell silent and just sat with a pitiful look on her face. Like a child who knew they did something wrong. I might have gone too far.
“Don’t act like I have no place in this. It would be a miracle if you six could do this on your own. But you can’t, let's just say I have a unique talent that you need. I know It isn’t easy for any of us… I even know it must have been even harder on you.” My words were all over the place as I half explained myself and half comforted her.
Jane looked up at me obviously not expecting my words.
“The trauma from some things doesn’t heal quickly. But here you are, after what happened, you are back in school and standing tall. I know how hard it is to go back to school. To ignore the voices telling you to hide. To fight the fear in your heart. I know what it's like to do it all alone too. That’s why I know how hard you have worked, and how strong you are.” My mouth was running wild. I actually considered if somebody had cursed me or something. A certain white haired child came to mind.
Jane looked up at me with her hopeful eyes. She might have felt the sympathy I extended. She just stared up into my eyes for a while. To be clear, absolutely no romantic tension at all.
Eventually the bell rang signaling the end of lunch. She quickly handed me her number and left.
I was sitting at my desk waiting for the next class to start when I saw Abby and Bell both give me a thumbs up. Hopefully a sign of a successful mission.
After school I met up with Abby and Bell in the coffee shop. This time both Mr. and Mrs. Drake were there talking. Mr. Drake just looked at me with pity and heaved a sigh. We sat in the corner of the shop and talked about their mission.
“What did you find out?” I asked.
“We found only a small bit.” Abby said while sipping coffee.
“Then why the thumbs up?” I asked curios.
“Well, just listen. Turns out that Rachael was always friendly until the very end of last year. People said that just a week before the end of the year she suddenly came in with no makeup and she suddenly became quiet and timid. There were rumors that she had been dumped or something similar but nothing was proven. Also one of her friends visited her house and she was hiding in her room.” Abby and Bell explained like they were chatting.
“Well I guess that did answer my questions.” However it gave little new information. However now that I had the public view of the matter it might be easier.
“Are you two doing anything tomorrow?” I asked.
“I am busy tomorrow.” Bell said.
“Ok then Abby would you go visit her tomorrow with me?” I asked.
“Sure.” Abby said, however I suspected she was reluctant. She probably just didn’t want to abandon me again.
“Good, but it might be weird if it was just the two of us.” I said.
“Why don’t you call Kaede?” Abby asked. I flinched at her name. Guilt started to slowly eat at me as I hung my head.
“I… I don’t think she wants to see me right now. How about we call Haven?” I offered instead. Not wanting to look up. Silence filled the room for a second.
“Fine.” Abby finally answered.
After I successfully convinced Haven to go with us the next day, both Abby and Bell left the shop happily chatting.
“Azure, we should talk.” Mr. Drake said while pulling out a chair.
“Sure.” I answered and sat in the chair.
