Chapter 9. The plan

Chapter 9. The plan

I got the feeling that if I didn't prove myself, she would actually just abandon me. And without wasting any time I headed into the forest again. When I was leaving I heard her say “Don't disappoint me James” I nodded to myself without even looking back and just kept running. if I couldn't find anything to bring back to her I don't know if my pride would even allow me to return.

While I was running I finally got a good look at the forest. For some reason the vegetation on the outer edges was denser than in the forest. I thought that maybe it was like on earth, that the bigger trees took up most of the sunlight and nutrients in the ground so smaller plants could not thrive at the bottom of the forest.

That would explain why the edges were denser in plants because the bigger trees did not grow there. Sure made it harder to peek into the forest from the outside. The only thing I had to look out for was the big roots and some bushes here and there that went up to my knees. The closest tree type I could compare these behemoths with back on earth was pine trees but they had the size of redwoods. And some of the trees here would even put redwoods to shame.

One thing that stood out was the colour of the trees. They have a black-ish looking metallic colour to them and the pine needles you could find on the ground were more in line with a thin metal then anything else. Guessing that I was in a colder climate or region because of the trees I reckon that I would not enjoy the winters here.

After running into the forest for about five minutes I could not see the mountain anymore because of the huge trees covering the sky which also made the temperature drop. Amazed at the sheer size of them I got an idea. I already know that the beast in this forest is above me in everything regarding the body but I hoped that my intelligence gave me an edge. I also know that the strongest animals are roaming during the day but I did not care because I just had to bring back something that really proved that I was serious.

Before I continued with the hunt I had to find a safe place to hide because as it is right now I was an easy target when I just stood here in the open. Looking around I spotted what looked like a crack in the tree closest to me and it had a place in front of it where light found itself down through the thick branches above, meeting the criterias that I needed for my plan.

Sadly the crack was about 4 metres off the ground and I could not find a suitable way to reach it. I tried to look around for a crack closer to the ground and I found some but they were too close to the ground or there was no light shining down close to them defeating the whole purpose for it. Before I left the area to find another place to look I remembered something. I thought back to the time when I pulled myself up the mountain when the Braken was chasing me. Realising that I have not really tested out my powers except when I was running. For some reason my heart rate started to rise just thinking about it, I looked down and squeezed my hand noticing that my hand did not bleed anymore and the cracks had already closed themself.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Realising that I was still using earth standers for everything I got mad, fuck im dumb sometimes. I also realised that it was going to be hard to get rid of my thinking because I have lived almost my whole life knowing what the normal human body could do and couldn't. Once again I made excuses, fuck James you got to get it though your head that this is not earth anymore. Still kinda mad at myself I walked over to the tree I first spotted.

Standing in front of it right now you could really get an understanding of how big they were. Even when I was a metre away it still just looked like a wall, and while slowly raising my gaze it really felt like the tree would never end. Coming as close as I did to the tree I could see that the bark would make it alot easier to climb making my earlier predicament disappear.

Still the cracks in the bark only made it so I could maybe squeeze one two or three fingers into them during my climb. It looked like it would be quite hard because without an edge my feet are pretty much becoming useless but thinking about my idea and how it would not work without the appropriate height I knew I had to do it. I already knew that my idea wasn't fleshed out and I made most of it up as I went, but the gist of it was to find something big and hard to attack my prey from above and hope I did enough damage to it. I kinda knew that my idea was kinda simple and had many holes in them but without any real equipment I could not really come up with something better.

I looked around for anything, a rock or a branch but most of them were just a bit too big or small. When I finally found my chosen weapon which was an old branch that resembled a club, big at the end and smaller at the bottom. I knew that I found what I needed and went back to the tree, after finding it almost impossible to climb with the large stick which was quite heavy, I might add I just laid down my coat and tied it together like a sack

. Puting the coat in my mouth I started to climb again. I was struggling very hard with the weight and some of my fingers have already started to bleed, it felt like the club had to weigh something like fifty kilos. I also found it quite funny that my mouth has helped me as much as it has. After climbing what felt like eight metres instead of half of that I finally made it up. It was a tight fit but I made it work, sure I had to sit down for it to work but at least there was enough room so that my feet did not stick out after curling them up to my body.

Now came the waiting game, I needed a place high enough but also close enough to somewhere light shined at the ground. I got lucky finding this place quite fast. The reason I needed somewhere the light would shine was because I hoped for an animal to find it and bask in the warmth of the sun rays. Knowing that reptiles liked to bask in the sun to gather heat. I just hoped that they did that in this world as well. It also made me feel better that the stronger reptiles in this forest would have probably had a bigger spot to sunbathe, while the spot in front of me was not small it still wasn't huge so I just hoped that lady luck was on my side with this.

After sitting in this place for what felt like three hours I started to doubt my plan, and the temperature was rapidly dropping. While it did not affect me that much when I had my coat which I was quite impressed with, it did not show any sign of damage even after the climb up. But what the temperature did affect was the reptiles and how active they were. Well once again I could be wrong and maybe the reptiles in this world did not need sunlight that much, why not stop there. Something that has been bugging me is that if this was a colder climate maybe there would not even exist any here, all reptiles were not even cold blooded so maybe this was just a stupid idea to begin with. I said to myself that I would give it one more hour before trying something else. And just after that thought had left my mind I heard a crack from down below.
