Chapter 4. Prey

Chapter 4. Prey

There it was, the only thing that could come close to describing it was a Trex and even that would not do it justice. What set it apart from a Trex was that it walked on all four of its limbs, the typical Trex had small arms but this beast's front legs were the same size as its hind legs.

It was a bit smaller than a Trex from earth but the power the beast exuded from its large muscles, that looked like they would almost break free from the skin, was something I have never seen before. It's black scales shone with an almost red lustre.

The beast head was almost identical to a T rex's, this beast had reddish foam forming around its mouth. Presumably from the blood that was dripping down from a wound where a huge chunk of flesh was missing from its right side of the face. And from its eyes you could feel an almost intelligent gaze that was blazing with furry.

The beast seemed to have lost its patience and then roared one last time before it started to charge. You would have to be stupid to not know what it wanted.

I tried all I could to make myself move but my heart was still gripped by fear. As I saw the beast come closer and closer my heart rate went crazy shooting up to speed like never before and something inside of me finally started to work, slowly but surely I began to regain my senses.

I was still afraid of that monster but the inevitable death that came with not doing anything was scarier so I collected my courage and started the climb again now with a body filled with adrenaline and something else coupled with the impending doom approaching I made haste.

The beast showed no sign of stopping, it flew up the mountain and the sounds that came out of its mouth made the back of my hair stand up. I told myself this is not where I will die. I screamed it, trying to push my body to the absolute limit, becoming faster than I believed was possible. The mountain side eventually turned 90 degrees and my pace slowed.

Looking back I saw the beast again now it was even closer than before, no more than 10 metres. This time I told myself not to look back anymore and only focus on climbing. My fingers were bleeding. I think I have lost a nail or two but it did not matter now. My body was screaming at me to stop, it felt like my muscles were constantly tearing. I did anything to hurry my climbing, even going so far as to claw my way in some places, hurting myself even more in the process.

Now I didn't even need to turn back to know the monster was there; it was like I could feel him right behind me. With one last push I put all my power in my legs trying to reach a far away hole in the mountain side, and I succeeded.

But what I thought now, I don't have any more energy and the distance I reached was negotiable when compared to the beast speed. I could see the opening to the cave from here. It wasn't even 10 metres away, yet it felt so far off. Slowly losing my grip with the remaining hand I felt this is it, this is where my journey ends. Pathetic I said to myself, even my consciousness was starting to darken.

Before the darkness could fully take over my vision I felt a strong emotion suddenly form like out of nowhere, wrath on a level I have never felt pushed away the darkness and my mind started to become clearer. Weak your so FUCKING WEAK JAMES YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE SOMETHING MORE, THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN SEEKING AND NOW YOUR JUST GIVING UP PATHETIC. I screamed this at the top of my lungs.

Then suddenly an foreign energy entered me; it was like adrenaline on drugs. It rushed through my body like flood gates that had opened. This feels amazing, the fear and the pain I felt couldn't even compare to what I was feeling right now it was all blocked out. I screamed once again but this time it was a roar of pure ecstasy.

When the energy that was in my body entered my arm that still held on, it felt like I could pull myself up using only one arm and that's what I did. I used all my strength and pulled and the result shocked me, I was sent flying at least 1 metres upwards! Something that I have never been able to do before. And then I heard a snap and a sharp pain assaulted my body but in the heat of the moment I threw that in the back of my head.

After being launched, the original place I thought about gripping was missed by quite a bit and the only thing I could see now was a piece of rock sticking out in front of my head. I didn't even have time to think before I bit down on the closest rock just to keep myself from falling downwards, I did not want to lose what little distance I had gained over the beast. By doing this I shattered some of my teeth but I gladly gave that exchange for my own safety.

Who made rock so goddamn hard, I cursed to myself, while blood kept flowing out of my mouth. Seeing that it was less than 8 metres to the cave, I couldn't do anything else than keep climbing, gritting what was left of my teeth. I climbed with both my legs and one remaining good arm since the other one did not seem to want to listen to my commands.

Luckily the energy was still coursing through me and I climbed the rest of the way with little to no trouble. Having placed my hand in the opening of the cave and pushing myself over the edge with what little remained of the energy in my body, I finally breathed out. Feeling the cold hard stone against my back felt quite nice actually.

While lying there on the floor ,seeing my own chest move up and down with great speed, the beast appeared in my mind and I cursed myself how I could have forgotten?. Using what remained of my energy I crawled to the edge again and looked over and sure enough it was still there. I chuckled. I felt some despair about what it would do when it reached me but I also felt good knowing I accomplished what I sought out to do, guess you can't win them all.

It was then something happened to the beast, you could see it in its eyes. It was like a flame had gone out and it lost all intention to keep following, without any warning it stopped and started to roll down the hill. With a big bang the beast reached the ground and like nothing the beast stood up and shook off what dust had covered its body and then it ran into the forest like nothing happened with speed like I have never seen a living being reach.

“Slower than I thought but you broke through so that's something” that was the last thing I heard before I lost consciousness.
