Moon to My Earth Part 3
Something Is Wrong With My Earth

Something Is Wrong With My Earth

The next morning, the two have awakened and have enjoyed a lovely breakfast together. They're both getting ready for the day as Kate is dressed and fixing her hair in the bathroom while Merig puts on his armor. Kate looks over at Merig standing near the dresser and smiles at him with smitten eyes before Merig notices as their eyes meet while he smiles back.

(K)You look so handsome in that armor.

(M)You really like it, don’t you?

(K)Absolutely, it suits you and I’ve just always thought armor was attractive, especially on you.

(M)[chuckles] Well, it’s a good thing I wear it every day so I can catch your eye and make you fall in love with me all over again, just like I do every time I see you.

(K)[giggles] Such a way with words, my love, keep that up and I just might have you make love to me again.

(M)Hey, I wouldn’t mind before we leave.

(K)I wouldn’t either, but we are running a little behind.

(M)I’m the commander, remember? I can be as late as I want, and if I want to make love to my wife before I head out, I have the power to do so and no one will bat an eye.

(K)So much authority, but I wouldn’t want you to abuse that authority.

(M)Hey, I don’t abuse it, I take advantage of it, there’s a difference. Taking advantage of something isn’t always a bad thing.

(K)I guess you’re right, I just feel bad for taking up your time when you could be doing more important things.

(M)We’ve talked about this, honey. You are at the very top of that list of important things. I’m confident in my work already, so if you need me or I just want to take a day to spend with you, I have the authority to do that.

(K)You’re absolutely right, my love. I guess I should take advantage of it, too, since I am the commander’s wife.

(M)Now you’re understanding, I knew you’d see it from my perspective.

(K)[smiles] Well, if that’s the case, then I’ll take advantage of it.

(M)Better yet, let’s take advantage of it together.

(K)With pleasure.

The air is heavy with desire as Kate and Merig exchange sultry glances, their eyes locked in a passionate gaze. As Merig finishes dressing himself in his armor, Kate strides over to him with purpose. As she approaches, he turns to face her, placing his hands on her hips as they continue to stare into each other's eyes. Slowly, Merig leans down and presses his lips against Kate's in a soft kiss. She responds eagerly, wrapping her arms around his shoulders as he hugs her tightly around her waist. Breaking away from the kiss, Merig gazes deeply into Kate's eyes, his own turning crimson. A smile spreads across Kate's face as Merig leans in and trails kisses down her neck, eliciting giggles and sighs from her. After a moment, Merig pulls back and turns Kate around to face the dresser, wrapping his arms around her waist once again, and continues kissing her neck from behind. As the intensity between them grows, Merig's hands move down and pull up Kate's dress, exposing her bare hips which he caresses tenderly, still kissing her neck. With careful movements, he removes her underwear and adjusts himself, preparing to make love to her. Merig then pins Kate against the dresser and squeezes her breasts a little too hard. She expresses discomfort, but he is too caught up in the moment to listen. With growing concern, Kate attempts to move away from Merig, but he pins her against the dresser with a little more force as she struggles to break free, and she softly speaks up.

(K)I appreciate your enthusiasm. But don’t you think you’re being a little too rough, my love?

Merig remains silent, lost in the moment as he kisses Kate's neck, his lips brushing against her skin. Suddenly, he bears his sharp goblin fangs, sinking them into her flesh. Kate gasps and cries in agony, her voice breaking the stillness. Merig immediately pulls back, his eyes wide with horror as she spins around, shock etched across her face. Kate instinctively touches the bite mark on her neck, pulling her hand away from it to see her fingers stained with blood. Merig's expression shifts to one of deep regret, while Kate's confusion lingers in the air. Without a moment's hesitation, Merig dashes to the bathroom, returning swiftly with a damp cloth. He begins to gently clean the wound, his voice a mix of urgency and tenderness as he tries to soothe her and apologizes.

(M)Holy shit, I’m so sorry, honey, I don't know what came over me. I swear I didn't mean to hurt you.

(K)Hey, it's okay, my love. You just got caught up in the moment and got carried away, that's all.

(M)That’s no excuse. I’m really sorry, sweetheart, I don’t even know what happened to me. Are you okay?

(K)Honey, I’m fine, really it’s okay. I know you didn’t do that intentionally.

(M)Of course not, my moon, I feel terrible.

(K)Please don’t, I don’t want you beating yourself up.

(M)You know me, honey, I beat myself up every time I accidentally bump into you.

(K)I know you do, my love, but really I’m fine, it’s just a little blood. Sometimes you don’t realize how sharp those fangs are and it’s okay.

(M)I should’ve been more mindful, sometimes I wish I didn’t have these fangs.

(K)Hey, I’ve never minded them and they’ve been very helpful and I love them because they belong to you and I love you.

(M)I love you, too, please don’t hate me.

(K)Oh honey, you know I could never hate you.

(M)You’re probably upset with me, though.

(K)Not in the least, my love. We can just slap a bandage on it and I’ll be fine.

(M)I left a mark on you and made you bleed. It’s not okay.

(K)[smiles] Listen, honey, it’s okay, it was just a love bite. It did hurt, and it startled me, but I’m not mad at you. Think of it as a mark to show everyone that I belong to you. I’ll wear it with pride and the scar that comes with it.

(M)[smiles] Now that you put it like that, I feel less guilty, but I still feel bad.

(K)I know you didn’t mean to. I promise I’m not upset.

(M)[sigh] Alright, let’s clean it and put a bandage on it and then we can leave.

(K)Okay, honey.

Merig dashes into the bathroom, frantically searching through his first aid kit. He retrieves a bandage, some disinfectant, and a few cotton balls, before quickly rushing back to Kate to treat her wound. He douses the cotton with the disinfectant, and with steady hands, he cleans Kate’s wound before carefully applying the bandage and securing it in place. Once done, they both step out of the house and head to their separate destinations. Kate makes her way to the pub to catch up with Ashley, while Merig sets off on patrol alongside Larry, Barth, and Gordo. At the pub, Ashley and Kate sit facing each other on each side of the table, Kate eagerly prepared to discuss her night with Merig.

(K)So Merig finally made love to me wearing his knight armor.

(A)Oh, how romantic, I'm sure you enjoyed that.

(K)You bet I did. It was so passionate and intense. He even showed me his red eyes, which I absolutely love.

(A)Don’t you worry about that, though?

(K)Worry about what?

(A)Merig’s behavior when he's like that, usually he's aggressive.

(K)Not with me, he can control it really well. Although the sex is pretty intense, I don't mind. I honestly feel peaceful when he's in that state and I told him as much. He's used that side of him to protect me and he treats me just as well in that state as he does when he isn't. The way I saw him when Sean showed up at the training grounds yesterday made me feel safe when Merig showed Sean that side of him. Sean was scared. You could see it written on his face. But Merig assured me that even in that state, he wouldn't hurt me and I trust him.

(A)I know you do, honey. I wasn't suggesting he would. I've just seen that side of him when he beat the shit out of Jeff and when we came to rescue you at the bandit camp. I never knew he used it when you two were intimate.

(K)He honestly didn't until our honeymoon. I told him that I wanted to see his red eyes while he made love to me and he warned me it would be intense, but I didn't mind and it was amazing.

(A)I understand and I'm glad he can control it during a time like that. You know me, you're my best friend and I worry.

(K)I know you do, Ash, and I appreciate you looking out for me.

(A)By the way, I noticed you have a bandage on the side of your neck. What happened?

(K)...Oh, well, something did happen this morning, Merig bit me.

(A)What, he bit you?!

(K)He didn't mean to, Ash, it was a love bite. I saw how handsome he looked in his armor, and we flirted back and forth. Then I walked over to him and I was touching on him and he was kissing me and touching all over me. Then things started to heat up, and he had me against the dresser and he was about to make love to me. He was kissing my neck from behind, then suddenly, he was getting a little too rough and then he bit me. But he apologized profusely, and he even helped me put this bandage on. He really didn't mean to, Ash, he just got carried away in the moment. He was beating himself up for it.

(A)[sigh] I can relate to that. Larry has gotten carried away a few times and he'll nibble on my neck and other places, but he never went that far. Are you okay?

(K)I’m just fine, I promise, Merig wouldn't hurt me intentionally. Even in that state, he's done it once before.

(A)I believe you, hon, and I would never imply that he would hurt you. You just have to be careful when he's like that. He could get carried away like he did.

(K)I know, and I realize that it's no big deal honestly. He thought I hated him for it, and I had to reassure him that I didn't. He felt so terrible about it, but I told him he pretty much marked me so that everyone knows I belong to him.

(A)[giggles] That's a good way to put it. You would think of something like that when it comes to Merig. You're both so in love, even after you're married. I have a feeling your love will never sour.

(K)Larry’s toast at the wedding contributed to that. His toasts are magical.

(A)That, they are. I'm just glad you're okay. I'm sure Merig is still beating himself up.

(K)I’m sure he is, too. I hope he doesn't get distracted while he's on patrol.

(A)Me too, but he's got the other goblins with him to talk sense into him. Cormac is still confined to the training grounds, but I hear Deirdre is keeping him company.

(K)Yeah, they're enjoying spending time with each other. Did you hear about what happened yesterday?

(A)No, what happened?

(K)Well, I mentioned that Sean showed up at the training grounds yesterday. I’m sure Larry told you about it.

(A)Yeah, now I remember, he did tell me. Are you okay?

(K)I am, thanks to Merig and the other goblins, minus Cormac.

(A)Where was Cormac?

(K)He spent the night at Deirdre’s house last night.

(A)[gasp] He what?! Holy shit, are you serious?

(K)You can ask the other goblins and Deirdre herself. They admitted to it, that's why they didn't show up early in the morning.

(A)Don’t tell me, did they?...

(K)Yep, they sure did.

(A)Oh my god, I'd be lying if I said that I didn't see that coming, but damn I'm shocked at the same time and I don't know why. Those two have gotten so close since Deirdre took care of Cormac. She's such a sweetheart.

(K)She really is, and she deserves happiness, and so does Cormac.

(A)Yeah, after how he was during your honeymoon, I'm glad she came to help him. He needed that, and so did she. When I heard her sorry, I cried myself to sleep that night. What happened to her was horrific. She definitely needed that solace in her life, and Cormac gave it to her willingly. Cormac showed a different side of him.

(K)Or maybe the side of him that was there all along. The real Cormac that the other goblins talked about. But he's still not happy that Sean is in Tara, and it's a good thing Cormac wasn't at the training grounds when Sean showed up.

(A)I can't imagine why he would be. Seeing the person who betrayed you after so many years can be damaging.

(K)I know just how Cormac feels.

(A)I know you do, hon, he betrayed you too. He's a monster, and he didn't deserve you, and he still doesn't. You deserve better and you got it.

(K)All thanks to Merig and all thanks to you, Ash.

(A)What did I do?

(K)You saved my life when Sean tried to end it.

(A)I was just doing my job as your best friend.

(K)But you're not just my best friend, you're a sister to me and I probably wouldn't be alive if it weren't for you.

(A)You’re probably right, but I don't want to gloat about it. I only did it to save your life because I didn't want him to kill you, that's all. I didn't do it for recognition.

(K)I know you didn't, Ash. I know your intentions and I love you for it.

(A)I love you too, hon. So are you okay from the encounter yesterday?

(K)A little shaken up still, but overall I'm okay. Merig and Larry have Barth and the guards making sure he doesn't come back. Barth was very excited about getting that mission from Merig.

(A)I’m sure Merig wasn't happy about Sean's threat.

(K)Not in the least, like I said, he was scared when Merig went into that state. He pointed an arrow at him, too, and he would've shot him if he had come closer. Merig and the other goblins formed a barrier between Sean and me, and they were ready to fight him as well.

(A)Oh, I'm sure, I don't doubt that Merig would have shot him. He would've been doing you a favor.

(K)Well, luckily he left quietly and Merig and Larry have doubled up on the security again, just like they did last year. Merig isn't convinced that Sean will stay gone. You know Sean as well as I do.

(A)Yeah, I wouldn't put it past him to weasel his way back in. The sneaky bastard got into my house unnoticed back in Taill. I don't doubt he'd try that shit in an entire city. But he'd be digging his own grave.

(K)Yeah, he would be. Merig made it clear to him that if he came near me again he would kill him.

(A)Good, I won't lose sleep over it. I know Merig won't either.

(K)Oh absolutely not, Merig will sleep like a baby after reveling in his victory by making love to me.

(A)I can definitely see that, at least Sean wouldn't be a threat anymore. But maybe he'll be smarter than that now that he knows what Merig is capable of.

(K)Definitely, Sean barked up the wrong tree this time, especially with the other goblins there, too. He royally screwed up, thinking he could just waltz into the training grounds and threaten me.

(A)No one ever said Sean was smart, but he sure as hell tested the waters and almost drowned. He realized it, so he got out of the water.

(K)Definitely, Merig showed him who's boss around here and Sean didn't like that.

(A)He doesn't have to like it, he just has to get out and move on. Merig doesn't mess around when it comes to you and this city.

(K)I know and we made love to celebrate Merig's victory in kicking Sean out of Tara.

(A)I’m sure it relieved the stress of Sean being here.

(K)It did, and I told Merig that, that's when he showed me those red eyes. It's as if Merig knew what I wanted. We’re so connected and we know what the other wants.

(A)I believe that, since you're both intertwined, and it's so beautiful. It's as if your minds are connected, as well as your souls.

(K)I think you're right, that lovemaking we did in the forest on our honeymoon really connected us and bound us together.

(A)That’s so amazing. Larry and I are connected as well, I realized it happened after he proposed to me when the incident with Rachel happened. We made love that night and I felt more connected with him after we reunited. It was only a day. Even so, I realized I screwed up, and I fixed it. Larry still loves me and I'm happy with him.

(K)I love that for you, Ash. You two are meant for each other.

(A)You and Merig are meant for each other, too.

(K)I just hope Sean stays out of Tara, I told Merig. I was still kind of scared that he'd come back. But he assured me that wasn't happening, not if he had anything to do about it.

(A)Trust your husband, your knight, and commander, hon.

(K)Trust me, I do, and I'm less weary of it.

(A)Good, Sean can't hurt you anymore and you don't need that kind of stress in your life. Be happy and forget Sean exists.

(K)With pleasure.

The two women exchange warm smiles, their laughter mingling with the lively atmosphere of the pub as they enjoy each other's company. Meanwhile, in the forest, Merig, Larry, Barth, and Gordo are on their usual patrol, keeping a vigilant eye out for bandits and clearing away activated traps. After completing his circuit, Merig guides his horse back near the city entrance, where he halts and remains idle. A frown creases his brow, his eyes narrowed in contemplation of the events that unfolded earlier that morning with Kate. One by one, the other goblins wrap up their tasks and return to Merig's side, with Barth breaking the silence.

(B)Alright, I cased the area and around the walls. I didn’t see or smell any signs of Sean or even bandits along the way.

(M)Good, I don’t smell him either.

(G)I took care of all the activated traps and mines after Ash set new ones.

(L)Everything’s clear where I looked. I didn’t pick up Sean’s scent. I wonder if he did turn into a chicken shit and realized what he was dealing with.

(B)Most likely, he’s a coward, just like we suspected.

(G)You could smell his fear when he showed up at the training grounds.

(L)Oh definitely, I had a feeling we would scare him off with all of us ready to kick his ass while protecting Kate.

(B)Hey, little brother, are you okay? You look like you just left a funeral.

(M)[sigh] I’m fine, but I’m not sure about Kate.

(L)What do you mean, what happened?

(M)Well, we were getting intimate this morning before we left and I’m not sure what came over me. I was in that state of mine where my eyes change color and so does my attitude and I guess I got a little rough with Kate and didn’t realize it. The next thing I knew, I blacked out, and I heard Kate scream in pain and when I came to, she turned around and I saw she had bite marks on her neck.

(B)Damn, has that happened before?

(M)No, this is the first time I've done that. I was in that state during our honeymoon when we made love, and I never did anything like that. I know how to control it, but something came over me and it's like I couldn't control myself. I feel like a piece of shit.

(L)Don’t feel too bad. I know I've gotten rough with Ash a few times, but she didn't mind. I've given her soft bites, but I've never bitten down hard.

(M)That’s the thing I did, and it made her bleed. I had to clean her wound and put a bandage on it. I feel so terrible and I'm beating myself up.

(B)Don’t beat yourself up, little brother, you just have to be more careful.

(L)I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. I get carried away when Ash and I are intimate, so it’s not a big deal.

(M)It is to me, Larry. The look on her face when she turned to look at me was heartbreaking. She looked scared and shocked.

(B)I’m sure that was just from the pain, we goblins have sharp fangs, so of course they hurt if you bite someone.

(M)It doesn’t matter, I shouldn’t have done that, I can control myself better than that. I’m so angry with myself, but Kate says she’s not, and she doesn’t hate me.

(L)Of course, she doesn’t hate you, pal. She loves you more than you understand. She knows you wouldn’t hurt her intentionally.

(M)That’s what Kate told me after it happened. She said she wasn’t mad at me and didn’t hate me. I guess that makes me feel better. She even said she thinks of it as I marked her to let others know that she belongs to me. Now that I think about it, it makes me sound like an animal. I may be a goblin, but I’m not a beast.

(B)Hey, if Kate is looking at it in a positive light, so should you. She sure is proud to be your wife. I could see her wanting to wear a mark you gave her with the same pride as her wedding ring.

(G)The bite may not be permanent, but it will leave a scar that will be visible. You both know you didn’t mean to hurt her, so just put it behind you and don’t dwell on it. I’m sure she won’t hold it against you. She loves you too much.

(M)You’re right, I did feel less like a piece of shit when she became more positive about it. I just hope she isn’t afraid of me in that state now. I don’t even want to show that side of me to her anymore because of it.

(L)I’m sure it won’t happen again. Like you said, you can control it. Kate isn’t the least bit afraid of you, Merig, you know that. She’s been with you this long and she married you. She wouldn’t have even looked in your direction if she was afraid of you.

(M)Makes me wonder what it was about me that she fell in love with.

(B)A lot of things, Merig, you forget she and I talked a lot at the pub when she was battling with her mental health. She said there were so many reasons why she fell in love with you. The way you treated her, the things you did for her, you’d go out of your way to help her, and you didn’t even ask for anything in return. But she, being the wonderful human that she is, and did what she could to help you in return, even though she wasn’t obligated. You taught her how to dance again and danced with her. You told her things that made her feel good about herself. You saved her life. You protected her, you accompanied her when she needed it so that she didn’t get hurt. She saw how much of a powerful fighter you are and women like that. You treated her with respect, kindness, and care and you were patient with her and you still do all of those things and you’ve never stopped. When you got together, you showed her love and affection and told her how beautiful she was and how much you loved her. Once again, you treated her with respect, kindness, and care and showed her how much she meant to you by helping her through a dark time in her life and then you asked her to marry you and she did. Now you’re protecting her from the monster that made her life hell, but she’s such a strong person that we knew nothing about her past and didn’t even suspect such a horrific thing to happen to her. You continue to stand by her and be there for her and protect her and support her. I’m sure that means the world to her that the one person she trusts the most is going to stand between her and her former abuser and dare him to touch her because it will be the last thing he does on this earth.

(M)I understand all of that. We made love last night as well, and she said she felt less stressed out about Sean. When I showed her my red eyes and that side of me came out, she said she wasn’t afraid and it brought her peace because I’ve used that side of me to protect her and she felt safer when I used it against Sean.

(L)There you go, there’s your answer. She’s not afraid of you and she doesn’t hate you. Look, pal, I know you feel terrible for biting her, but don’t beat yourself up at this level. You’re worrying about her hating you over something you didn’t mean to do, and you’re doubting yourself again, something you promised her you wouldn’t do.

(M)[sigh] You’re absolutely right. I’m an idiot, but I still feel terrible and I’ll do whatever it takes to make it right.

(G)It seems you already did it by replacing what you did with love and care. That’s what you do when you unintentionally hurt someone. You apologize, make it right by helping clean the wound, and move on, simple as that.

(B)Exactly, at least you made an effort to do all of that. I’m sure Sean didn’t do any of that when he hurt Kate because it was intentional. You are nothing like him, Merig, and don’t even think about comparing yourself to that monster. You may be a goblin, but you’re a hundred times better of a person than he is and a much better companion to Kate.

(L)That’s right, and that’s what Kate loves about you and that’s why she fell in love with you. You showed an interest in her and she showed an interest in you. You both were just unaware of how you both felt about each other until you confessed. No matter how much Sean hurt her, she was willing to move on and be happy again. That’s all she wanted, and you made that happen, Merig, and that’s what made her fall in love with you.

(B)He’s right and I know it’s a big deal to you that what you did hurt her, but accidents happen, and things you do unintentionally happen. She made a positive out of it, despite her past because she trusts you and she knows you wouldn’t do it on purpose.

(L)I remember you apologized a million times for accidentally hitting her with your elbow. She knew it was an accident, and you didn’t mean to and you didn’t let yourself live it down.

(G)You treat her as if she’s fragile and made of glass and that’s a good thing. She’s precious to you and you don’t want to break her. You’d be devastated if you broke her and you are as gentle as possible and that’s how it should be. At least you acknowledge that you hurt her and you make it right, even if it wasn’t intentional. It seems Sean enjoyed bringing her pain, and suffering, and misery, and you show her the opposite of all of those things.

(M)You’re all right again, I just can’t help it. I love her, and I want her to know that I wouldn’t hurt her intentionally.

(B)She already knows that little brother, that’s what you’re not understanding. She knows the difference between intentional and unintentional harm, and despite what happened to her, she didn’t let it affect her judgment of others. She knows the good from the bad. People deal with trauma differently. That doesn’t mean she didn’t go through it, but she made the best of it and didn’t let it break her.

(L)Like I said, she’s a strong person, and she chose to be happy again and if she wanted to be happy with anyone, it was always going to be with you, Merig. Just forgive yourself and move on. Don’t dwell on it.

(M)[smiles] You know what? I will forgive myself. I may feel bad about it, but I’ll still forgive myself because I know she understands that I wouldn’t hurt her intentionally.

(B)That’s it, little brother, and if it happens again, do the same thing. You can’t prevent accidents, they always happen.

(M)I get it, I can’t help how I am with Kate, but I’ll try not to beat myself up so much. After hearing what Sean did to her, I feel more inclined to treat her as if she’s made of butterfly wings. That’s why I felt so bad about biting her.

(L)We understand, pal, you want to treat her with extra love and care and that’s okay, you’re free to do that, as long as you’re still giving her love and affection.

(M)Of course, I wouldn’t do anything different.

The goblins' conversation abruptly dies as Merig's words trail off, his voice severed by a sudden, searing pain. His eyes flash crimson, like hot coals igniting, his hands clutching his head and palms pressing against his temples. A guttural grunt escapes his lips, and his body stiffens as if electricity is coursing through his veins. The other goblins' faces contort in concern, their eyes snapping toward Merig with alarm. Barth commands his horse closer to his side, his hands reaching out to steady his brother.

(B)Hey, little brother, are you okay?

Barth receives no reply and inches himself closer, his hand softly resting on Merig's back. In an instant, Merig snaps his head facing Barth, fury igniting in his crimson gaze, a low growl rumbling from his throat. Barth's eyes go wide with shock, instinctively recoiling from his brother. After a tense pause, the crimson in Merig's eyes dims, replaced by his normal eye color. A look of bewilderment appears on his face, registering the terror etched on Barth's.

(M)Barth, what just happened?

(B)I don’t know, are you okay?

(M)I don’t know, I just felt this pain in my head out of nowhere, and then I blacked out. What did I do? Did I hurt you?

(B)No, but your eyes were red, and you looked like you were about to tear me apart.

(M)I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to.

(B)It’s alright, little brother, you just didn’t look like yourself, that’s all.

(G)Yeah, I’ve seen that side of you, but not that bad. How are you feeling now?

(M)I’m fine now, but that was terrifying and I’m sure it was for you too, Barth. I’m really sorry.

(B)Hey, don’t worry about me, I'm fine, I’m just glad you’re okay.

(L)Yeah, I was worried something was happening to you, pal.

(M)I’m fine, honest, let’s just finish the patrol. I wonder if Kate is doing alright.

(B)I’m sure she’s fine. She and Ash are probably having fun at the pub talking about women's things. I’m thinking about visiting Sarah later.

(G)I’m sure you’re excited about your date this weekend.

(B)You bet I am. I got most of it planned. I want to spend the whole day with her.

(M)Sounds like me when I asked Kate out on our first date.

(L)You were a nervous wreck when the time came. You couldn’t even breathe, you were so nervous.

(M)I remember it so well. I hope everything goes well for you, Barth. Do you know what to say when you tell her how you feel?

(B)Oh yeah, I know exactly what I want to say. I’m nervous, but that’s normal, right?

(M)Yep, it’s normal, just be happy you’re not me and don’t chicken out.

(B)Yeah, yeah, says the one who’s married to the one he confessed to.

(M)Yeah, but it took me a year to do it. Just take a deep breath and let the words come out and don’t hold back either, or you’ll regret it.

(B)Don’t worry about me, little brother. After this weekend, Sarah and I will be official…hopefully, if she even wants to be with me.

(M)I thought the same thing, stay positive, Kate loves me even though I’m a goblin. If Sarah cares about you, then she feels the same. She won’t care what you look like.

(B)You’re right, I can’t wait for our date. I’ll do my best to charm her.

(L)You got this, pal. I want to see you and Sarah holding hands and kissing by next week.

(B)That’s the idea, Larry. I want to kiss her when I tell her how I feel…again if she even feels the same way.

(G)I’m sure she does. She always looks happy to see you. I noticed when Cormac went back to stay at the healer. Sarah was looking over at you and smiling the entire time.

(L)Yeah, I noticed that, too. You can tell she’s smitten by you, Barth.

(B)If you say so, that gives me high hopes.

(M)Well, let’s get this done, maybe after this, we can head to the pub to see Ash and Kate and then we can all go see how Cormac is doing at the training grounds. Then we can all go back to the pub and relax.

(L)Sounds good to me, Commander. I’m sure you’d like to see how your wife is doing.

(M)Yeah, I do. Let’s wrap this up.

(B)You got it, Commander.

(G)Aye, sir.

The four goblins break off to complete their patrol for the day, eager to make their way to the pub where Ashley and Kate await. Upon entering, they navigate through the lively atmosphere to their familiar table, spotting the two women deep in conversation. Merig sneaks up behind Kate, leaning down to plant a gentle kiss on her cheek. Startled, Kate glances up, and their eyes meet, sparking smiles and another sweet kiss before Merig settles in beside her. Meanwhile, Larry takes his place next to Ashley, greeting her with a warm kiss as the other two goblins take their seats at the table.

(K)Hello, my love, how was patrol today?

(M)It went pretty smoothly, luckily we didn’t see any bandits or any signs of Sean.

(B)We checked every bush and looked behind every tree and we didn’t pick up his scent.

(L)Nope, not even remnants of him. He must’ve actually screwed off like we told him to.

(G)I even went around the walls of the city and he was nowhere to be seen.

(A)Were there any traps set off?

(B)A few, but not enough to pique suspicion. I think Larry’s assumption is correct.

(G)That honestly sounds suspicious in and of itself. Kate, you said Sean was very persistent when you first left him, right?

(K)I actually have to agree with you, Gordo, now that I think about it. It makes me wonder if he has something more sinister planned than to just show up here and threaten me.

(A)I’m going to have to agree as well, Sean wouldn’t give up that easily, we know him all too well.

(L)If that’s the case, I wouldn’t put it past him to team up with bandits or something.

(B)It’s possible, but he hates Fomors and there are lots of them in the bandits camps.

(K)But there are humans as well. He could very well talk to the human bandits and use the Fomors in the camps to do his dirty work.

(A)That doesn’t sound too far off. I can see him using Fomors as tools as much as he hates them. But in this case, they could be beneficial to him to help him get what he wants.

(K)But the bandits promised to leave us alone after they attacked my parents. Especially after the threat Merig made to them if they ever bothered us again.

(G)They’re bandits. Do we honestly trust them to keep their promise?

(M)Considering I threatened them with an entire army of guards, yes. Ingo, the new leader of the camp that Cormac led, looked pretty scared when I threatened to burn down their camp if they ever tried that shit again. If they broke that promise, then I guess I’d have to go through with my threat, which was more of a promise than a threat.

(G)I get it. I’m just wondering if Sean threatened them if they didn’t cooperate with whatever he’s planning.

(A)That sounds about right, I wouldn’t put it past him to do that.

(B)Well then, I guess we need to start interrogating some bandits, don’t we?

(M)It seems like it, but we can do that during tomorrow’s patrol.

(L)The question is, where would we even find any bandits? We haven’t seen any since Sean left the city.

(G)Yeah, I noticed that, too, when I was looking around the city walls. I didn’t even smell any bandits, did you guys?

(M)Nope, not one.

(B)Oddly enough, no, not even when I was taking care of the traps.

(L)Now that I think about it, I didn’t smell any bandits, either. Which was weird since we would’ve at least picked up their scent near the traps that got set off.

(M)He’s right, I didn’t pick up a single trace of bandits. Even as good as my hearing, sight, and smell are, I didn’t even hear a whisper.

(K)Well, then I guess it’s safe to say that Sean may be conspiring with the bandits.

(A)But I guess we would need to confirm that somehow.

(G)It seems like we should pay the bandits a visit. You said Ingo was the new leader of Cormac’s old camp, right Merig?

(M)Yeah, you know him?

(G)Yeah, he was originally going to be the leader, but he didn’t want the position and gave it to Cormac.

(M)That’s right, I remember him.

(L)Yeah, I remember him, too, a terrible fighter. I had to train him to fight, and he even considered coming here with us, but he decided against it.

(B)Yeah, he wasn’t as strong as Cormac and he knew that, so he was happy to give him the position.

(L)Well, I guess Gordo is right. We’ll need to pay Ingo a brief visit, won’t we?

(M)Sounds like it. Cormac can come with us this time. Maybe he can strike some fear into Ingo and be the one to interrogate him.

(A)Only one way to guarantee that, he should still be at the training grounds.

(K)Yeah, we’ll go talk to him about it and see if he wants to do that.

(B)Sounds like a plan. What do you think, Commander?

(M)Let’s go say hi to Cormac and Deirdre.

At that moment, Merig's voice falters, his eyes blazing a fierce crimson once again as he grips his head tightly with his right hand, unleashing a heart-wrenching shout of torment. The group, struck by a mix of horror and concern, quickly shifts their focus to him. Kate, her heart racing, reaches out to him, placing her hand in his left hand, and holding it tightly as she speaks to him in a voice laced with urgency.

(K)Merig honey, what’s wrong?

Merig remains silent, his grip tightening around Kate's hand as he turns to face her, crimson fury blazing in his eyes. Kate gasps in agony just as Barth leaps from his chair, positioning himself between them and swiftly locking Merig in a headlock. As Merig releases Kate's hand, she instinctively recoils, cradling her injured hand with a look of sheer horror on her face. After a tense moment, Merig falls quiet, his eyes losing their wildness as confusion takes over, while Barth maintains his hold. Noticing Merig's return to normalcy, Barth loosens his grip, and Merig glances around at the rest of the group. His gaze then shifts to Kate, who is visibly shaken, tears brimming in her eyes as she trembles, still protecting her hand. Barth steps back from between the two as Merig speaks.

(M)It happened again, I blacked out.

(B)Yeah, and you targeted your wife this time.

(M)Kate, are you okay? Did I hurt you?

(K)...Just my hand, you squeezed it really hard.

(M)I’m so sorry, sweetheart, I didn’t mean to, I swear.

(K)It’s okay, my love. What about you? Are you okay?

(M)I’m fine now, but you’re more important, remember?

(K)I’m concerned about you, too, honey.

(A)Wait, what do you mean you blacked out?

(M)It happened when we were out on patrol. Apparently, I did the same thing to Barth.

(B)Just out of nowhere while we were talking, he did the same thing he just did now, and he said his head was hurting and that he didn't remember anything after that.

(M)My head felt like it was splitting and then all I saw was black. But I could hear what was going on for some reason and I didn’t know what to do. It’s like I had no control over myself and when I came to, Barth looked just as terrified as Kate does.

(A)That doesn’t sound good.

(M)Sweetheart, are you sure you’re okay? I’m so sorry, I really don’t know what’s going on with me.

(K)I’m fine, honey, I’m just glad you’re back to normal. I’m a little shaken up, but I’ll be okay.

(G)Maybe you should go see Nessa, maybe something is wrong with you medically.

(L)I don’t think so, I think something more serious is going on.

(B)I have that feeling too, but let’s go see Cormac real quick. Maybe Merig just needs some fresh air.

(A)Right, maybe he might know what’s going on and we can ask him about going to the bandit camp.

(M)Alright, let’s go.

The group rises from their seats as Merig strides over to Kate, his hands outstretched in an apologetic gesture, his eyes full of remorse. Kate looks up and meets his gaze, their soft smiles illuminating the moment, before Merig tenderly takes her injured hand, his fingers brushing over it with care. Drawing her closer, he envelops her in a warm embrace, holding her tightly. Kate reciprocates the hug, then pulls back to gaze up at him once more. In a sweet moment, Merig leans down, and their lips meet in a soft kiss. Together, they join the rest of the group, leaving the pub behind as they make their way to the training grounds. There, Cormac has wrapped up his training for the day, sitting side by side with Deirdre in the resting area. Their closeness is palpable, with Cormac's arm draped around her shoulders, their hands intertwined as Deirdre rests her head against his chest, both enjoying a well-deserved break filled with conversation.

(DD)How’s your shoulder feeling today?

(C)It feels great. It’s actually starting to get used to me holding my crossbow again. I feel less strain in my muscles, so that’s good.

(DD)I’m glad to hear that, sweetheart, your target practice was amazing. I loved watching you get really close to the bullseye.

(C)It’s good to know I’ve still got it and I’m getting my strength back.

(DD)That’s good and I’m enjoying spending time with you, but I’m worried that I’m distracting you.

(C)You’re not distracting me at all, sweetheart. I’m actually more focused when you’re here with me and watching me practice. You’re more like my motivation than anything.

(DD)That makes me happy to know that I help you, but I’m sorry that some days I won’t be able to be here. I hope you can still focus without me.

(C)That’s okay, as long as I get to see you every day, it’ll make up for it and I’ll still be able to focus even when you’re not here.

(DD)As long as you want to see me every day, I’ll do my best.

(C)Your best is good enough for me. I don’t expect to see you every waking moment.

(DD)I know, but it would be nice to see you every day if possible and maybe we can spend nights together.

(C)That sounds like a good idea. I’d love to spend the night holding you and kissing you. Maybe even make love to you.

(DD)[smiles] I’d love that, too, but eventually, I would love to live together if that’s possible, too.

(C)I think I can make that happen, whenever you’re ready.

(DD)I’m more than ready if it’s with you. But are you ready?

(C)Of course, I am. I want to see you when I wake up and when I go to sleep. It would make me very happy to see you every day.

(DD)It would make me happy, too, since all of that anguish from what happened to me goes away when I see you. I’m at peace since the monster that hurt me is gone as well.

(C)My anguish goes away, too, and the physical pain is gone thanks to you. You’ve taken such good care of me, Deirdre, and I would’ve died if it weren’t for you. Now I want to take care of you in return.

(DD)Only if you want to, I wouldn’t want to put any negative burdens on you.

(C)Absolutely not. You won’t put any burdens on me at all. I said I want to take care of you, which means that I’m willing to, no questions asked.

(DD)If you’re going to take care of me, then I’ll take care of you as well. We’ll take care of each other and do whatever we want together. I love you and I want to be with you.

(C)I love you, too, Deirdre. I want to be with you as well. I don’t mind taking care of you.

(DD)Then I don’t mind taking care of you.

(C)So, would you want me to spend the night with you again tonight?

(DD)That would be wonderful. I would love that very much.

(C)I would love that, too.

(DD)So what are your thoughts about all of that chaos with the man who hurt Kate?

(C)I’m actually glad we didn’t see him, for two reasons. One, if I had been there, I probably would have shot him with my crossbow. And two, I didn’t want you to be there, because if he touched you, I definitely would have shot him. After hearing what he did to Kate, I don’t trust him to be around women.

(DD)I understand, sweetheart, and I appreciate you protecting me.

(C)Of course, I told you that no one will ever hurt you again, not even me, because I could never do such a thing. You’re too precious to me and you deserve love and affection, and it’s my responsibility to give that to you as well as to protect you and prevent anyone from hurting you.

(DD)Merig said the same thing about Kate.

(C)Well, they love each other and that’s what you do for someone you love and that’s what I’ll do for you.

(DD)Well, I love you, and I’ll do whatever you need me to, so I don’t feel useless.

(C)You’re not useless, Deirdre, I don’t expect anything from you. You’ve shown me that you love me by doing what you’ve done and what you do for me is more than enough, considering what you’ve already done. Not only did you take care of me and help save my life, but you helped me fight the battle within myself that I didn’t feel I could win alone. You took away all of my pain and I owe you nothing but love and happiness, just as you’ve given me.

(DD)And I owe you the same since you’ve given me love and happiness, too. You deserve all of it, Cormac.

(C)So do you, and I’ll be happy to give it to you.

(DD)I’ll be happy, too.

(C)We should probably head to the pub for the afternoon. Merig and the others should be there.

(DD)I kind of just want to sit here and spend time with you, just the two of us. I feel so calm sitting here with you.

(C)I feel the same way. Let’s just hide away and sit here together then.

(DD)Okay, sweetheart, I would love that so much.

(C)And I love you so much.

(DD)I love you, too.

Deirdre lifts her head from Cormac's chest, her beautiful blue eyes sparkling as she gazes up at him. He meets her gaze, his own eyes filled with adoration and affection. A gentle smile plays on his lips as he places a hand under her chin, tilting her face towards his. He leans in closer, their breaths mingling before he presses a soft kiss to her lips. They embrace in the moment, savoring each other's touch as the rest of the group enters the training grounds. As they approach the resting area, they catch sight of Cormac and Deirdre locked in their tender kiss. The group watches for a moment, their smiles reflecting the love between the two. Merig clears his throat, breaking the spell as Cormac pulls away from Deirdre, his cheeks flushed with a rosy hue. His eyes widen with surprise as he turns his head to see Merig smirking mischievously. Caught off guard, Cormac looks at Merig with astonishment and a hint of fear as Merig speaks up with a teasing tone, Cormac’s voice laced with panic.

(M)Good afternoon, you two. How was your training today, Cormac?

(C)I swear I’m not slacking off. Deirdre and I were just taking a rest. I’m practically done for the day.

(DD)[giggles] It’s true, he did great at the targets today. He said the muscles in his shoulder and chest are getting better when he holds the crossbow.

(M)[chuckles] Relax, Cormac, I believe you, it’s not a crime to kiss your woman after training. It’s good to hear that you’re doing better, though.

(C)[sigh] Sorry, you just caught me off guard. How was the patrol today?

(M)It was…interesting, we didn’t see any signs of Sean or bandits for that matter.

(C)That’s strange, you didn’t see a single bandit?

(L)No, and oddly enough, we didn’t even find traces of either. Only a few traps were set off, and there wasn’t even a hint of their scent. It was suspiciously quiet out in the forest.

(B)We’re thinking maybe Sean did leave, but we concluded that he isn’t one to give up, especially not with his threat against Kate.

(C)That’s true, I know Sean well enough myself and I know he’s not the kind of person to stop pursuing to get his way.

(A)That’s what Kate and I know about him as well. Seeing as he stalked her after she left him, there was no way he would just give up like that.

(G)We think he’s conspiring with the bandits from the old camp and we wanted to pay a visit to them and maybe we can get some information from Ingo and the rest of the bandits.

(C)That sounds like a good idea. When did you all want to go?

(M)Well, since it’s still early in the day, we could get ready now and leave in the next few minutes.

(C)Yeah, we can do that, I’ll get ready.

(DD)You’re going out into the forest?

(C)Yeah, we are, we shouldn’t be long. We’re just going to ask the bandits from my old camp some questions.

(DD)Okay, you be careful out there, sweetheart.

(C)I’ll be just fine. We’ve made peace with those bandits. Hopefully, they haven’t betrayed us.

(B)We were thinking the same thing since Merig threatened them after we rushed you to the healer. That day, we helped Kate’s parents when they were attacked.

(G)Ingo, the new leader, said he wouldn’t bother us anymore in exchange for information about you and whether you lived from when you got shot. So far, they haven’t messed with us, other than Thornton, and you killed him.

(L)And the bandits that we have dealt with seem to be from other camps since I don’t recognize them from the old camp.

(B)But lately, we’ve seen no bandits at all, so there’s a possibility that they are from the old camp

(C)I see. I’ll be happy to interrogate Ingo and the other bandits. Did anything else interesting happen today?

(M)...

(B)Something has been going on with Merig and we don’t know what. His eyes turn red and he’s been getting very aggressive, but he doesn’t remember anything when he snaps out of it.

(C)That’s odd. Are you sick or something, Merig?

(M)I don’t feel sick, but I did hurt Kate. I was holding her hand, and I squeezed it, but Barth stepped in and pulled me away from her before I did any more damage. Unintentionally, of course.

(C)Oh my god, are you okay, Kate?

(K)I’m fine, it’s a little sore, but I know Merig didn’t mean to hurt me. He bit me on my neck this morning as well while we were intimate and I've been wearing this bandage on it.

(C)Damn, Merig, something must be wrong with you.

(M)I honestly don’t know what, but I guess we’ll find out when we go visit Ingo at the camp. I really didn’t mean to hurt Kate, and apparently, I did the same thing and almost attacked Barth.

(C)What exactly are you experiencing?

(M)Well, one minute everything is fine and then I feel like I’ve got a raging headache. Then everything goes black and I don’t remember anything when everything becomes clear again.

(C)That does sound odd. Maybe we can go see Nessa and see if it has something to do with your health.

(M)Maybe, but like I said, I don’t feel sick, so there can’t be anything medically wrong with me.

(L)We’ll probably find out eventually, but we need to focus on getting information about Sean.

(C)Right, let’s go and see Ingo. Maybe he has something to do with how Merig is behaving.

(G)Maybe, only one way to find out.

(A)We should get going, then, I’ll get the horses ready.

(L)I’ll grab a few guards as well.

(M)Let’s get going.

(C)Aye, Commander, I’ll get ready. Deirdre, sweetheart, I have to go, okay? I won’t be long.

(DD)I’ll wait here for you if you want me to.

(C)You can, but you don’t have to.

(DD)I want to. I’ll see you when you get back, my love.

(C)Alright, I love you.

(DD)I love you, too, Cormac.

Cormac leans in for a final, lingering kiss with Deirdre, savoring the moment before rising to join the others. He strides over to the gathering, where preparations for the journey to the bandit camp are in full swing. The air buzzes with anticipation as everyone dons their armor and readies their weapons, retrieving their steeds with purpose. Larry steps forward, designating three guards to accompany the mission. The group converges at the training area, where they expertly saddle their horses, excitement crackling in the air as they prepare to set off.

(M)Alright, are we ready?

(L)Ready, Commander. I’m bringing three of our guards along with us.

(B)We’re geared up and ready.

(G)I’m ready.

(C)I can’t wait to interrogate Ingo. I’ll make him piss himself. He wouldn’t dare keep any secrets from me.

(A)I’ve got what we need to track the camp, in case they moved it.

(K)We know where they are. Merig and I visited them after Cormac’s injury to tell them that he was alive.

(M)Yeah, I don’t think they’ve moved since then.

(C)Alright, then, I’m ready to go.

(B)Me too, let’s get this over with.

(A)Hopefully, we don’t have to kick any bandit ass.

(G)They don’t have the balls to start anything. They know we’ll burn the camp to the ground.

(L)That’s right, there aren’t many bandits left from that camp, at least half of them left, so they don’t stand a chance.

(M)Exactly, let’s move out.

(L)You got it, Commander. Guards, mount!

The guards swiftly climb onto their horses, poised to venture into the depths of the forest, while the rest of the group readies themselves to follow suit. Just as Merig is about to mount his steed, he notices Kate struggling to get on hers, her injured hand making the task difficult. With a warm smile lighting up his face, he approaches her. Kate looks up, her own smile brightening despite her pain as she cradles her hurt hand. Merig gently takes her injured hand in his, his fingers working soothingly over it for a brief moment before he presses a tender kiss to her palm. A look of concern crosses his features as he speaks softly, his voice laced with sweetness and regret.

(M)I’m so sorry, sweetheart, I really feel terrible.

(K)It’s okay, my love, you can’t control it and we’re going to figure out what’s wrong with you.

(M)That’s no excuse. I told you I would rather die than hurt you.

(K)But you didn’t do it on purpose, honey. Something is making you behave this way. You don’t deserve to die because of it.

(M)I think I do.

(K)Well I don’t, and neither does anyone else. We’ll figure this out like we always do, but for now, let’s get this done. Don’t think about it too much, honey. You won’t be able to focus on the task at hand.

(M)You’re right, honey, I’m sorry. I love you so much.

(K)I love you, too, Merig.

Merig gently kisses Kate’s hand once more, then pulls her into a warm embrace. They linger in the hug for a moment before parting to share a tender kiss. Their eyes lock, and a shared smile brightens their faces, but suddenly, Merig’s gaze shifts to a deep crimson. Kate’s eyes widen in shock, and she gasps, instinctively stepping back in fear as Merig clutches his head, groaning in distress. Barth, alerted by the sound of Kate’s gasp and Merig’s pained grunts, swiftly dismounts his horse and rushes to their side. As Merig releases his grip on his head, he looks at Kate with a menacing stare and begins to advance toward her. Realizing the danger, Kate turns to flee and sees Barth approaching as he calls out a warning for her to move.

(B)Sis, out of the way!

Kate swiftly pivots and darts away from the space between Merig and Barth. Barth lunges at Merig, tackling him to the ground with force. However, Merig, fueled by his rage, uses his strength and manages to shove Barth off, and rises to his feet. With a desperate cry for help, he groans and grips his head in agony. Merig then turns and races to his horse, leaps onto its back, and commands it to gallop away, swiftly leaving the training grounds behind. Barth regains his footing, standing up as he glances at Kate, and strides over to check on her well-being, while the rest of the group shifts their focus toward the unfolding scene.

(B)Are you okay, sis?

(K)I’m fine, luckily he didn't hurt me this time. We have to go after him.

(L)Maybe that isn't such a good idea.

(K)I don't care, I'll do whatever it takes to help him. He's still my husband, no matter what.

(A)We understand, sweetie, we’re only thinking of your safety.

(K)I understand, too, but I made my vows to him and I promised to take care of him. He needs me. He needs our help. Something is wrong with him. When I look into those red eyes and he’s in pain, that's not my husband anymore. It's a side of him that I've never seen, even in that state when his eyes are red. He looks so hateful. Something is wrong and I have to go find him and find out what it is.

(C)She's right, I'm going to have to agree.

(G)This is getting serious. He's not himself at this point.

(K)Exactly, I'm going after him, he's probably running off into the forest.

(B)Kate, wait.

(K)He’s my husband, Barth, and he’s your brother and he needs us! Are you coming with me or not?!

(B)[nods] You’re right, let’s go.

Kate hurriedly approaches her horse, swiftly mounting it and issuing a command as she gallops toward the training grounds' entrance. Barth dashes back to his own horse, quickly climbing aboard, and soon, he and the rest of the group are in pursuit of Kate, exiting the training grounds in a flurry. They weave through the bustling city streets, with Kate urging the citizens to make way. The townsfolk part like the sea, allowing the group to pass unhindered until they finally arrive at the northern entrance, where they plunge into the forest's depths. Kate stops her horse, waiting for the others to catch up before they all come to a standstill, and she begins to speak.

(K)Barth, you and the other goblins please sniff Merig out. We have to find him.

(B)Alright, we’ll do that, I can already smell him.

(K)Please lead the way.

(B)You got it, sis.

Barth and the other goblins advance to the forefront, their noses twitching as they catch the scent in the air. With Barth at the lead, they veer off in a new direction, the other goblins and the rest of the group diligently following his lead. They work in unison, honing in on Barth's trail, riding steadily until they gradually slow down and come to a standstill once more. Barth takes another whiff of the air for Merig's scent and veers his horse away from the path. He charges into the thicket, while the others continue to follow him. As he navigates through the trees, Barth spots a clearing where Merig stands with his horse. Barth signals a warning to the others and halts as he nears the opening. The rest of the goblins come to a stop as well, their eyes drawn to Merig, who glares back at them with his piercing crimson gaze.

(L)There he is.

(A)Why is he just standing there?

(B)That’s a good question.

(K)I’m going to try to talk to him.

(C)That might not be a good idea.

(K)At this point, I don’t care. I’ll do what it takes to help my husband.

(G)We’re going with you then, in case you get hurt.

(K)Fine.

(B)Just please be careful, sis, odds are he’ll just attack you again.

(K)I’m willing to take that chance.

(A)I’d do the same if it was Larry.

(L)I know you would, honey. He’s my best friend and I’ll do whatever it takes to help him as well. We’ll be right behind you, Kate.

(K)[nods] Thank you, let’s go.

Kate gracefully dismounts her horse, and the goblins follow suit, forming a protective escort around her. With determination, she strides ahead, with Barth on one side and Cormac on the other, while Gordo and Larry lag a bit behind. As they approach Merig, who stands idle, casting a fierce glare at the group, the goblins come to a halt. With a mix of caution and warmth, Kate advances toward Merig, a gentle smile gracing her lips as she speaks to him in a sweet but anxious tone.

(K)Merig, my love, please tell us what's wrong. I know it's you. I know you're in there.

(B)Be careful, sis, don't get too close to him, he might try to attack you again.

(K)I know what I'm doing. Merig honey, it's me, your wife. Come with me, my love, and we'll go home and figure this out. You're still my husband and I'm here to do whatever you need me to so I can help you. That's what I'm here for, remember? That's my job as your wife.

(M)...[glare]

(L)If we need to, we’ll ready our weapons.

(K)No, don't hurt him, please.

(C)Kate, he's not responding. I think it's safe to say that he isn't Merig anymore.

(G)Cormac is right, you can tell just by looking at him. Those eyes, he's not there.

(K)Merig, please, come with us, honey. Everything is going to be okay, remember? That's what you told me.

(M)...[glare]

(B)It’s no use, sis, he's not moving. Merig, come on, little brother, it's me, Barth. You're not yourself. Tell us what's wrong.

(G)We should probably go.

(K)No, I'm not leaving him.

(C)I don't think we have a choice, Kate. Either he'll attack us or he's just going to keep staring at us with those menacing eyes.

(L)He’s right, Kate, whatever is happening, Merig has no bodily autonomy anymore. We need to figure out why.

(K)I’m not leaving my husband. Merig, honey, let's go home, okay?

(L)Come on, Merig, it's your old buddy, Larry. You got a screw loose and we're going to help you.

(C)Not sure if it's a good idea to piss him off.

(G)That’s why I'm staying back here. Those eyes are terrifying. I'm not sure how you're not scared, Kate.

(K)Because he's my husband and I love him, Gordo, I've met those eyes and that side of him. It brings me peace because he protects me by using those eyes. He's even made love to me in that state, so I'm not afraid of him.

(C)I can understand that. Even after Deirdre watched me kill Thornton, she still loves me and is happy to be with me.

(K)That’s love, Cormac, it's unconditional. You protected Deirdre, and she loves you for it. No matter the lengths you'll go to do it. You're still her protector and someone she loves.

(L)I’ll slash someone to ribbons over Ash, so I get what you mean.

(B)I’d kill someone over Sarah, especially if they hurt her.

(K)Well, I'm going to find out what's wrong with my husband and if someone is behind this, I'll deal with them. My magic is powerful enough to do some damage.

(B)You still need to be careful. Merig would have our heads if we didn't fight beside you.

(K)Well, I guess if I have to fight my husband, you won't have to worry.

(C)You know damn well we're going to fight alongside you, Kate.

(G)He’s right, as terrifying as Merig is right now, I'll fight him.

(L)Fighting my best friend isn't going to be easy.

(B)How do you think I feel? I never in a million years thought I would be fighting my brother. Yet here we are.

(K)I have to keep trying to get through to him. Merig, honey, please come with me. I know you're in pain and I'll help you. You're still my husband and I'll do anything to help you. Let's go home, my love.

(B)Sis, no.

Kate advances, closing the gap to Merig, who emits a menacing growl before launching himself at her. In a flash, Larry reacts, sprinting to grab Kate and pulls her aside just in time. Barth, undeterred, positions himself between them and Merig, tackling him to the ground once more. As Larry releases Kate, he dashes to assist Barth in pinning Merig down, both straining against his fierce resistance. However, Merig's strength proves overwhelming and breaks free from their grasp, forcing them to retreat. In a swift motion, Merig races to his horse, leaps onto its back, and commands it to gallop away, disappearing into the depths of the forest. Kate, her focus shifting, hurries over to Barth and Larry, who are standing themselves up from the ground.

(K)Are you two okay?

(L)We’re fine, we were more worried about you.

(B)Are you okay, sis?

(K)I’m fine, but now my husband is gone and we need to figure out what’s going on with him and find him.

(C)We should probably head to the bandit camp and figure things out. We aren’t getting anything done, just standing out in the forest.

(G)Agreed. Let’s see if Ingo knows anything.

(A)We won’t find him without knowing where exactly he’s going and the bandits possibly know something if our suspicions of Sean conspiring with them are correct.

(L)Well, it’s a good thing we were headed there, anyway.

(B)Come on, sis, we’ll figure this out. We’ll threaten violence if we have to.

(C)I’m right there with you.

(K)Alright, let’s go.

Kate and the goblins return to their steeds, swiftly mounting as Barth takes the lead again, guiding his horse toward the bandit camp as the others follow. Meanwhile, at the familiar encampment, Ingo, the new leader with light gray skin, hears the thunderous sound of hooves approaching. He turns his gaze toward the noise, feeling a surge of anxiety, yet he maintains his composure, standing firmly in place. With a subtle gesture, he instructs the other bandits to make way for the incoming group, who begin to slow their horses as they near the camp. The bandits obediently clear a path, allowing Barth and his crew to ride up to Ingo, who stands there, confusion etched on his face. His eyes widen in shock, and the color drains from his cheeks as he locks eyes with Cormac, who is staring daggers at him. Barth and the other goblins dismount and approach Ingo, who finally speaks, his voice a mix of nerves and forced calmness.

(I)Cormac, Barth, Larry, Gordo, it’s been a while.

(L)Indeed it has, Ingo.

(B)How’s the camp holding up?

(I)Not too bad since most of the bandits left after the chaos from last year. How’s life in the city as a Royal Guard, Cormac, Gordo?

(G)It’s been a life-changing experience, you should try it sometime.

(C)Needless to say, it saved my life. I put my own life at risk after I almost died and neglected my recovery.

(I)How are you doing now?

(C)Much better thanks to the love of my life. She took care of me and everyone else here with me helped me in some way as well. I’m training to be a Royal Guard as I planned, and I met an amazing woman and we’re now lovers.

(I)Congratulations on a better life for yourself, Cormac. I heard you killed Thornton.

(C)I sure did. He threatened to rape the woman I love, the one he left a scar on half a decade ago.

(I)I heard about that as well, I kicked him out of the camp a long time ago after I became leader.

(C)I should’ve kicked him out when I was the leader. We told him to quit raping women, and he assured us he would, but I guess he loved doing it too much to stop.

(I)It seems like it, he honestly deserved to die. I can’t say I miss him, because I don’t. I’m just glad it was you who killed him. I hope your significant other is okay.

(C)She’s fine. Thankfully, I’ve lost no sleep over killing Thornton and I made that clear to him.

(I)I figured as much, I honestly won’t lose sleep, either. I’m glad you’re happy, though, and I’m glad he’s dead. He was a piece of shit and I’m sure all the women he’s raped can breathe easy again and he can’t do that to any more innocent women.

(C)So can Deirdre. She’s at peace again and we’re happy together.

(I)Good, I’m happy for you. So what brings you all here? And where’s Merig? I noticed that he isn’t with you.

(B)Well, we were hoping you could tell us that.

(I)...What makes you think I know where he is?

(C)Well, for one, because of the look on your face when we got here and because we think you know who does know where Merig is.

(I)I just wasn’t expecting you all to show up out of nowhere.

(B)Cut the shit, Ingo. You know damn well why we’re here.

(L)Have you seen a human man with dark brown hair come through here? His name is Sean, and we think he’s up to something.

(G)We think he has something to do with Merig’s behavior.

(I)What happened to Merig?

(B)He’s been acting very strange all day. First, he bit his wife over there, Kate. You may know her from when you bastards attacked her parents two months before their wedding.

(I)Yeah, I remember, what about it?

(B)Well, too bad for all of you, she and Merig tied the knot.

(I)...Congratulations, so how else has he been behaving?

(B)Well, He also attacked me and then Kate three separate times after the bite incident and we don’t know why. He said he blacks out after his eyes turn red and he experiences a severe headache and remembers nothing when he goes back to normal. This is very concerning and we need to know what’s going on with him.

(I)Look, I swore to Merig that neither myself nor the bandits would bother any of you after that incident with Kate’s parents.

(C)I’m not quite sure if I’m convinced of that, Ingo. You look like you know something and you’re hiding it. You know me. I don’t mind getting some answers out of you. We can do this the easy way or the hard way.

(I)Please don’t hurt me.

(K)Then, do you know who Sean is?

(I)...

(C)Thought so. I’m also sure you know what he’s up to.

(I)...

(G)It’s in your best interest to speak up and not be silent, Ingo. You know something, so tell us.

(I)...

(B)We made an agreement that you wouldn’t bother us anymore and you’re breaking that agreement by staying quiet. Sean has already threatened Kate and now Merig is gone. He ran after attacking her in the forest near the city before we came here.

(L)It seems awfully suspicious that Sean would just comply and leave the city after his threat to hurt Kate and not come back to go through with it.

(C)We were originally going to come and talk to you and see if maybe you’re conspiring with Sean. But our suspicions seemed more correct since Merig has been acting the way Barth just described.

(K)If you don’t want to face consequences, I suggest you tell us what we need to know about my husband and Sean. Or I’m sure Cormac will have a great time interrogating you.

(C)Oh, I’ll take great pleasure in getting information out of him.

(I)Alright, I’ll talk.

(C)Smart choice. Now tell us what you know.

(I)I know who Sean is. He came to the camp the other day and asked us if we had any Fomor seals.

(B)Why would he need Fomor seals?

(I)I don’t know, he didn’t say. But he did ask us how to use one and we told him how.

(L)Why would he need to know that?

(G)Wait, aren’t Fomor seals used to possess Fomors?

(I)Yeah, they are, and when you mentioned Merig’s behavior, that made me think that’s what Sean needed it for.

(C)Which means…Merig is possessed.

(I)That’s the only conclusion I can come to as to why he would need a Fomor seal and information on how to use it.

(K)Do you know where Sean is, Ingo?

(I)He talked about a dungeon. He said he was headed to one in Dunbarton. There are two dungeons there, so there’s no telling which one he went to.

(B)We’ll be able to sniff him out, especially if that’s where Merig ran off to.

(L)Well then, we have our answers. We appreciate your cooperation, Ingo.

(I)Is Merig in danger?

(C)It’s possible, but Kate is also in danger. Sean is her former fiancé and a monster. He abused her years ago when they were engaged. She left him and he stalked her and almost killed her.

(K)I lost my unborn child because of him and he’s going through with his threat to get his revenge on me. It seems he’s using my husband as bait by possessing him with a Fomor seal to lure me in.

(I)Oh my god, I had no idea what he was planning, I swear. That seems to be the only logical conclusion if that’s the case.

(G)Then we’re going to need to go back and grab some more guards and head to Dunbarton.

(K)It seems like it, I’ll do whatever it takes to get my husband back.

(A)Tell us, how do we relieve Merig of his possession?

(I)Well, odds are Merig has the seal on him, that’s the only way to possess a Fomor. The person who put the seal on him would also have to have a seal of their own to control the Fomor. The seals are usually on a piece of parchment.

(B)I’m guessing we have to destroy the seal.

(I)Yeah, that’s how you end it, just tear up the seal. Sean most likely has a seal on him as well and is controlling Merig with it.

(K)That explains why I was Merig’s target when he attacked.

(I)Sounds like it, either destroy the seal that Merig has, or the one that Sean has, or both if you feel so inclined.

(L)That makes sense, so we’ll have to find Merig and Sean first. That means taking a trip to Dunbarton. That’s a long way from here, but we can make it in a day.

(C)Which means we’ll have to start our journey in the early morning. There’s no way we can make it there before nightfall.

(B)That’s okay, we’ll be ready by the morning. Thanks for the help, Ingo.

(I)Sure thing, had I known what that man was up to, I would’ve never given him any information.

(G)It’s fine, you didn’t even know who he was, so how could you have known his plans?

(A)Let’s head back to Tara, then.

(I)Help Merig and make sure you beat the shit out of that bastard. Oh, and one more thing, you’re going to need entrance into the dungeon. Wait here.

Ingo pivots and strides away from the gathering, disappearing into his tent to fetch an item. Moments later, he reappears, making his way back to the group, a curious object clutched in his hand. He reaches out to Barth, revealing a small, rectangular slip of parchment adorned with cryptic inscriptions and a Fomor emblem. Barth accepts it from Ingo, his brow furrowing in bewilderment as he glances from the parchment to Ingo, seeking clarity.

(B)And what exactly are we supposed to do with this?

(I)It’s the only way you’ll get into the dungeon and since we don’t know which one, this item will come in handy. With this, you can enter any of the dungeons in Uladh, no matter which one. Make sure you take a healer with you. You’ll be fighting monsters and other possessed Fomors.

(K)So once we figure out which one Sean took Merig to, we can use it to enter, right?

(I)That’s right, just stand at the altar inside and place that piece of paper on it. You’ll automatically teleport inside the dungeon. But make sure you’re all standing on the altar, otherwise not all of you will be teleported. Also, only eight people can go in at one time, so choose wisely as to who goes with you.

(B)Understood, we know what we have to do. Let’s go back to Tara and prepare ourselves.

(L)Right, thanks again for your help, Ingo.

(I)Of course, Merig is still a friend, even though he doesn’t particularly like us bandits and neither do you.

(C)I may not particularly like any of you, but as long as you continue not to bother us, we’ll make sure not to bother any of you.

(G)Although we do still have bandits outside of the city that we need to take care of.

(I)We’re still bandits after all. We do what we want.

(A)You’re going to keep your promise and not cause trouble for us. I know you did it unknowingly by giving Sean what he was asking for, so we won’t hold it against you this time.

(L)She’s right, be more cautious next time. You never know who you can trust.

(I)Understood, I hope you find Merig and bring him back to Tara.

(B)We hope so, too. I'm going to find my little brother.

(K)I’m going to find my husband and bring him home to me.

(I)[nods] Be careful out there and destroy that seal. As long as Merig is possessed, Sean can control him and make him do anything.

(K)I’ll do whatever it takes. I’ve got everyone here who’s willing to help me.

(L)That’s right, let’s go back to the city and get ready for the morning.

(B)Right, we’ll let you know how everything goes. We’ll have one of your bandits give you the message.

(I)Sure thing, don’t let that bastard get away with this.

(C)Wasn’t planning on it, he was the human that betrayed me and gave me this scar.

(I)Then yeah, he deserves everything he gets. Good luck.

(G)Thanks, take it easy, Ingo.

(I)You all do the same.

(K)As long as we get my husband back, I will.

(L)Goodbye, for now, let’s go.

(B)You got it.

The goblins scatter, swiftly mounting their horses as they prepare to leave the bandit camp behind and journey back to the city. Upon their arrival, they make their way to the training grounds, returning their steeds to the stables. As they stroll toward the resting area, Deirdre, who has been patiently waiting, rises from her seat upon spotting them. She strides over to Cormac, arms wide open, and he reciprocates the gesture, enveloping her in a warm embrace. Deirdre gazes up at him, as he leans down to plant a gentle kiss on her lips. As they pull apart, she greets Cormac with a radiant smile and a voice as soft as a whisper.

(DD)Welcome back, sweetheart. Is everything okay? I saw what happened to Merig. Did you find him?

(C)Yeah, we found him, but he’s gone again. We think he’s gone to Dunbarton.

(DD)That’s a long way from here. Are you going to go after him?

(C)Let’s go sit and talk, sweetheart, okay?

(DD)Alright.

Deirdre gently releases herself from Cormac's warm embrace, her hand gently grabbing his as they make their way to the resting area. The others trail behind, each selecting a seat and settling in, while Larry remains standing in the center, commanding attention. The group encircles him, ready to brainstorm a strategy to save Merig. After a moment of contemplation, Larry inhales deeply, becoming the first to break the silence.

(L)Well, we know what to do and where to go. The question is, who is all going?

(K)I’m going, of course, I’m going to bring my husband home.

(B)I’m going, too, I’m not abandoning my brother.

(A)I’ll go as well, we’ll need all the fighting power we can get.

(C)I’m definitely going, Merig needs all of us.

(G)He’s right, I’m going, too, especially if we’re fighting other Fomors.

(L)Ingo said only eight people could go into the dungeon. Myself, Barth, Ash, Kate, Cormac, Gordo, that’s six.

(B)He also said we need a healer.

(K)Sarah can go with us.

(B)I’d rather not, she can’t fight like we can.

(C)But she’s the only one who can heal.

(B)I understand that, but I don’t want her to get hurt.

(K)Barth, listen. I’m sure if Merig knew what was going on, he wouldn’t want me to go and risk myself, either. But I’m a strong enough mage that I can fight and we can protect Sarah. Don’t you have shield spells?

(B)I do and so does Sarah. I just worry about her getting hurt.

(L)We understand that, pal, but we need her.

(B)[sigh] Alright, I’ll talk to her.

(C)So that’s seven people, that’s just under the limit.

(DD)I wouldn’t be of any use, would I?

(C)You can’t fight, Deirdre, I don’t want you getting hurt.

(DD)I know, but I would help you if I was able to.

(C)I know you would, sweetheart, but you’ll wait for me until I get back, right?

(DD)[smiles] Of course, honey, just be careful, okay?

(C)I’ll be just fine.

(DD)So what exactly is going on with Merig?

(K)Merig is possessed and Sean is the one controlling him with a Fomor seal. We got information from the bandits and Sean told them that he’s going to a dungeon in Dunbarton, but Sean didn’t say which one.

(L)The leader gave us a pass to enter any dungeon, so that helps.

(A)It’ll take us almost a day to get there if we’re fast about it, but if we go on a horse and cart, it’ll take about two days.

(B)Then our best bet is for all of us to go on individual horses and ride like the wind.

(G)Agreed, which means, we’ll be gone for two days, anyway. I’m sure on the way home, we’ll stop at an inn or something.

(K)Or we can visit my parents if they're home.

(C)That’s a good idea. I’m sure we’ll all be tired when we rescue Merig.

(DD)That means I won't see you for two days.

(C)It’s okay, I’ll be back before you know it, I promise.

(K)Are you all really willing to help me bring Merig home?

(L)Of course, Kate, he’s my best friend, and he’s the commander of the Royal Guards. Without him, I don’t know what we would do.

(A)He’s right, hon, he’s a friend and a part of the family we have here.

(B)He’s my little brother, I won’t just do nothing. I’ve always been there to protect him and I won’t stop now. He needs us.

(G)We’re going to be the ones rescuing him this time.

(K)Hey, I told you one of these days, you’d be the hero, Gordo.

(G)[chuckles] I’ll be proud of that title once we break that seal and get Merig back here.

(C)Right, he’s like family to the rest of us goblins, we won’t let this continue. I have a score to settle with Sean anyway, so this is the perfect opportunity for me to get some closure and confront the one who betrayed me.

(K)I don’t blame you, Cormac, you’ll get your chance. I’m sure you’re eager to show him the error of his ways.

(C)Very much so, he ruined my life back in Taill and hurt me. He deserves to suffer for it.

(B)You’ll get your chance to get back at him. We just need to focus on getting there.

(A)One question, Ingo said that Merig most likely has a seal on him. How exactly did he get it?

(L)I’m sure Sean slipped it in his pocket when we weren’t looking.

(G)But Merig would’ve smelled him, it isn’t that easy to get past Merig.

(L)Wait…now that I think about it, Sean got close to him when we escorted him out of the city. I’m sure he did it when our back was turned when he and I were coming back after making sure Sean was nowhere near the entrance of the city.

(K)It doesn’t matter at this point, he’s possessed and it’s our job to destroy that seal. I'll be the one to do it. I don't want anyone else getting hurt by Sean.

(B)Yeah, well, I'm sure he won't let you do that without a fight and that's where we come in.

(C)Yep, and I'll be happy to tear him apart.

(G)Same here, I think we all want to give him a taste of his own medicine.

(L)Oh, definitely, he'll pay for this and for what he did to Kate.

(A)So, we’ll prepare tonight and set out tomorrow morning, bright and early.

(B)I’ll make sure Sarah is on board.

(L)I’ll prepare supplies, gear, and weapons, as well as the horses for the morning.

(C)I'll do whatever you need me to do so we can be ready.

(G)I’ll help as well, we should all get a good rest before we go.

(K)[sigh] I’ll be sleeping in my bed alone tonight.

(A)Oh, honey, I can always come next door and lay with you.

(K)I appreciate it, Ash, but I'm sure Larry doesn't want to sleep alone, either.

(A)Kate, hon, you're my sister, remember? I can’t emphasize that enough.

(K)I know, but it would be selfish of me if I took from one person just to make myself feel comfortable.

(L)There she goes again, thinking about others before herself.

(B)That’s sis for you.

(A)Yep, that's our Kate.

(K)I may not like it, but I'll be more at peace in my own bed. Oddly enough, when I'm lying alone in our bed, I'll grab Merig's pillow and cuddle up to it, and it smells just like him. Believe it or not, smell is important to humans and not just goblins. Humans recognize smells as well, especially from our significant other, and it's proven to bring us peace and comfort when we have something that belongs to them, like an article of clothing or a blanket. For me, it's Merig's pillow that he lays his head on, and hugging it is how I relieve any anxiety when I'm alone. Thanks to Sean, I still have the anxiety that I do, so that's how I cope.

(DD)That’s so sweet, Kate, but I’m so sorry for you.

(K)Don’t be. Merig will be home with me in a couple of days, so I'll only be sleeping alone for one night.

(B)It’ll be okay, sis, you're never truly alone, you know that.

(K)I know and it's thanks to you all. I love each one of you and appreciate everything you all do for me.

(A)We love you, too, hon.

(L)She’s right, we do, but let's do what we can before we go home and sleep for the night.

(B)I’ll go visit Sarah real quick.

(L)Alright, pal, we'll see you back here.

(B)You got it, buddy.

The group rises from their resting spot and parts ways, ready to make preparations to embark on the lengthy trek to Dunbarton the following day. Amid the bustle, Barth strides purposefully toward the healer's quarters, intent on enlisting Sarah as their group's healer. Inside, Sarah is busy tidying up, smoothing the beds, and stowing away various medicines in the cupboards, while Nessa meticulously arranges the herbs at the workstation. Moments later, Barth bursts through the door, breathless and scanning the room for Sarah. The sudden entrance startles both women, who quickly shift their focus to him. Spotting Sarah, Barth shuts the door behind him and strides over, his expression urgent. Sarah meets his gaze, concern etched on her face as she inquires about his frantic arrival.

(S)Barth, you look distressed. Is everything okay?

(B)Not exactly, I'm not sure how to start off by saying this but…Merig needs our help.

(S)What do you mean? Is he okay?

(B)Well, to try to make a long story short, Merig is possessed and Sean is behind it.

(S)What?!

(B)Yeah, Merig is no longer in Tara.

(S)Okay, take a deep breath and explain as best as you can, Barth.

(B)[sigh] So this morning, Kate told us that Merig was acting strange, and he bit her while they were intimate. Then, during the patrol, his eyes turned red, and he was acting strange toward us and almost attacked me. Then at the pub, he squeezed Kate's hand and nearly attacked her and I stopped him. Then we went to the training grounds, and he charged at her before we left to go to the bandit camp to ask questions. Merig fled on his horse and we found him in the forest just standing there. We tried to talk to him, but then he charged at Kate again and we stopped him. He was too strong, and he got away and went deeper into the forest on his horse.

(S)Oh my god, so he’s possessed. How did you find that out?

(B)We went to go see the bandits to see if they knew anything. It turns out they knew what was going on. Sean was there and asked for information about a Fomor seal and how to possess a Fomor.

(S)So he was planning something all along.

(B)Yeah, he was, and we suspected it since he left so quietly.

(S)So where did he go? Do the bandits know?

(B)The leader of the bandits told us that Sean was heading to Dunbarton to one of the dungeons, but he didn't say which one. The bandit leader gave us an offering to the altar in whichever dungeon he's in. We'll be able to sniff out where they went and find them, but we need help.

(S)What do you need me to do? I'll do what I can.

(B)We need a healer and you're perfect.

(S)...Barth, I don't know much about dungeons, but I know that there are not so peaceful Fomors in there and I can't fight.

(B)It’ll be okay. I'll protect you, we all will. We need you, Sarah, I need you.

(S)Barth…

(B)Please, Sarah.

(S)[sigh] Okay, I'll go, if it's okay with Nessa.

(B)Please, Nessa, my little brother needs our help. Kate is worried sick, and she's determined to bring him home.

(N)I’ll be just fine here. You go and get Merig. Tara needs its commander and knight of the Royal Guards.

(B)Thank you, Nessa. We’ll also need supplies if that's okay.

(N)Take whatever you need. I'm sure fighting monsters won't be easy and someone is bound to get hurt.

(S)I’ll get things ready. When do we leave?

(B)We’re preparing everything tonight and then we'll leave in the morning. It's going to be a two-day trip. If we go as fast as we can on horses, we can get there faster.

(S)Okay, let's get things prepared. I'll make some pain-reducing potions and pack some medicine and bandages.

(B)Thank you, Sarah, I'm so sorry to ask this of you.

(S)Don’t be sorry, Barth, we're rescuing Merig. He’s very important to this city and to Kate, and you. I'll do anything to help a friend.

(B)But this means we’ll have to postpone our next date.

(S)Rescuing Merig is more important. After that, we have all the time in the world to plan another date. If Nessa is willing to give me another weekend off.

(N)You two go rescue Merig and then we’ll talk when you get back. But I’m sure we can work something out.

(S)[smiles] Thank you, Nessa. It means a lot.

(N)No problem and if anyone gets hurt while you’re there, you know where to go when you get back home.

(B)We’ll most likely stop in Taill on the way back to rest.

(N)Fair enough.

(S)Right, I’ll do my best to treat anyone who gets hurt.

(N)You’re an amazing healer, Sarah, I trust you.

(B)I’m going to have to agree with Nessa, the great healer Sarah.

(S)[giggles] That’s what I’m here for.

(B)[smiles] I’ll help you pack things.

(S)Thank you, Barth, there's no time to waste.

(B)Right, let's do this.

Barth assists Sarah in gathering vital healing supplies for their expedition, while the rest of the team at the training grounds busily readies their gear, weapons, and other important items. Once everything is set, the group heads home to organize their personal belongings for the adventure ahead and to enjoy a restful night’s sleep. Later that evening at Deirdre's home, she and Cormac find themselves in her bedroom, bodies entwined and making love. Cormac is on top of her, kissing her neck as Deirdre has her arms and legs wrapped around him. Cormac pulls back slightly, as the two stare into each other's eyes, filled with passion and desire as he continues. As they finish, panting and smiling at each other, Cormac leans in to kiss Deirdre once more. He then collapses on the bed, rolling over onto his back, panting and sweating with the two smiling with satisfaction. Deirdre snuggles closer to Cormac, and he wraps his arm around her as she speaks softly.

(DD)I’m going to miss you for these next two days.

(C)I’ll miss you, too, but I’ll be back and we can talk about our life and future together.

(DD)I’d love that very much.

(C)Me, too.

(DD)Can I ask you something?

(C)Ask me anything, sweetheart.

(DD)Do you ever miss your old life in Tailltean?

(C)Why do you ask?

(DD)When we were all talking at the training grounds earlier, you talked about how Sean ruined your life in Taill and he deserves to suffer for it. So do you ever wish you were still there and none of that happened?

(C)[sigh] Remember what you said when I was upset because I couldn't stop Thornton from hurting you?

(DD)Yeah, I remember.

(C)We wish bad things would never happen to us when they do. But we accept things that happen and move on and that’s what I’ve done. Do I wish that Sean had betrayed me and ruined the peaceful life I had? No, of course not, but it happened and I have to live with that.

(DD)I understand. Are you happy that you’re here and living a new life?

(C)Of course, I’m happier than I’ve ever been and I’m living a peaceful life again.

(DD)Are you happy with me?

(C)Of course, I’m happy, Deirdre. I’m so happy to be here and I’m happy to be with you. My life is perfect and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

(DD)That’s good to hear. I know you mentioned that you were with another woman in Taill, and it made me wonder if you missed her.

(C)No, I don’t miss her. She made her decision when she left me after Sean poisoned her mind into thinking that I was a villain. Did it break my heart at the time? Of course, but again, I moved on. I don’t love her anymore and I fell in love with you.

(DD)I’m sorry that happened to you, but I’m also glad to hear that you love me.

(C)Of course, I love you. I don’t love anyone else, Deirdre.

(DD)You’ll be staying with Kate’s parents back in Taill on your way back from Dunbarton. Do you think you’ll see her?

(C)I don’t know and honestly, I don’t care if I do or don’t. She means nothing to me anymore, I can promise you that.

(DD)But if she knew the truth about everything, maybe…

(C)Maybe, what?

(DD)I’ve just been thinking if she knew the truth about what happened and she realized you weren’t the bad guy when Sean lied about you to the people in Taill. Would she still want to be with you?

(C)Even if she did, I still wouldn’t want to be with her.

(DD)But, she was innocent and didn’t know the truth.

(C)[sigh] She chose to believe that I was a bad person, and she took the word of someone who betrayed me and lied to me. In my eyes, she betrayed me as well and I was heartbroken, but I had to accept that she would blindly believe someone over me, someone she supposedly loved and trusted. All of that pain from the heartache is gone because of you.

(DD)I understand. I’m sorry for prying and bringing up terrible memories.

(C)Don’t worry about it, it doesn’t affect me anymore. It’s been more than a decade since it happened. I’m here with you and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

(DD)Do you think she would ever try to reconnect with you?

(C)No, I don’t think so. She made it clear that she didn’t love me anymore, either. So why would I continue to love someone who doesn’t love me?

(DD)I get it, I won’t ask any more questions, I’m sorry.

(C)Don’t be sorry, I know that you’re curious and I know what you’re worried about. You’re worried she’ll try to take me away from you.

(DD)...Sort of…

(C)Well, I’m here to assure you that no other woman will ever steal me away from you. Because I don’t want to be with any other woman but you. I can’t imagine holding another woman, kissing another woman, or making love to another woman other than you, Deirdre, and that’s absolute.

(DD)[smiles] I’m so happy to hear that, Cormac, I just feel bad for her at the same time, since she was naïve and easily swayed by that monster.

(C)The only person to blame is the one who took the word of a person she didn’t trust as much as she trusted me. From what I know now, I honestly think he was jealous that I was with that woman and he didn’t think she should’ve been with a Fomor since he hates Fomors so much.

(DD)Well, I don’t care if you’re a Fomor or a goblin, I still love you.

(C)I know, you do, sweetheart, and that’s one reason I love you so much. Despite me being a goblin and knowing about my past, you didn’t care, and you chose to love and accept me as I am.

(DD)That’s right because you’re the most wonderful person I’ve ever met and I fell in love with you because of that. You’ve made me so happy and you took all of my pain and anguish away. I don't see myself wanting to be with anyone else because no one else has done for me what you have.

(C)I feel the same way about you, Deirdre, and you’re an amazing person, too. You did all of those things for me as well and I don’t think any other woman would have done the same, not even the woman that betrayed me.

(DD)I know what it's like to be hurt by someone you once loved.

(C)You do?

(DD)Yeah, I was with someone I thought I could trust and love as well. He left me because of what happened to me. We had been together since before I was attacked and when he came to visit me while I was still at the healer. He saw my injury and was horrified by it and the fact that I was groped. He said that I was no longer perfect, and he didn't even care about the fact that I was attacked and almost died from so much loss of blood. He left me while I was recovering and I was so alone, except for grandma Silvia, who was there with me while I healed. But I did love that man and when he left me, it hurt, but over time I realized that he didn't love me and I too lost all feelings of love for him.

(C)Sweetheart, I'm so sorry that happened. He didn't deserve you. I think you're perfect the way you are. But I'm sure it was hard being alone like that. You'll never be alone again, I promise.

(DD)That’s good to know because I honestly thought you wouldn't love me because of my scar.

(C)You thought wrong, I love you no matter your scars, and I'll continue to love you, and kiss your scars, whether inside or out.

(DD)I would love that more than anything. Thank you for everything you've done for me. I'm so grateful that you're with me and I'll love you and kiss your scars, too.

(C)I would love that, too.

(DD)You would never want to leave me, would you?

(C)No, of course not. I don’t know what I would do without you, Deirdre. Would you ever leave me?

(DD)No, I’d be lost without you, Cormac, you took away all of my pain, too. I want you all to myself.

(C)[smiles] Then you have me and I have you all to myself, too.

(DD)[smiles] That’s right and I have all night to spend with you before you leave in the morning, so I guess I shouldn’t talk about certain things such as your past. I wouldn’t want to sour the mood.

(C)You’re perfectly fine, sweetheart, I don’t mind answering questions you have or easing your mind of any worries you may have as well. The bottom line is, I love you and only you. While I do wish what happened to me didn’t happen, it did, and I have to face that fact. I’ve moved on and I’m much happier here. My life here is perfect and I wouldn’t want another life anywhere else and I don’t miss the woman that betrayed me. I do look forward to confronting Sean when we go to this dungeon and hopefully bring myself some closure.

(DD)I’m glad to hear all of that, sweetheart, and I hope you get the closure you need and deserve. Sean is a monster for what he did, but I’m glad you’re happy here and with me.

(C)I wouldn’t be happier anywhere else or with anyone else. Now, I’d like to spend some more time with you before I have to leave. I can either hold you all night, or I can continue making love to you.

(DD)[smiles] How about you make love to me again and then hold me and kiss me until we fall asleep so you can hold me all night?

(C)[smiles] I very much love that idea and I’d be happy to do all of that with you, the woman I love more than anything.

(DD)I would love that, too, you’re the goblin I love more than anything.

(C)I love you, Deirdre.

(DD)I love you, too, Cormac.

Cormac turns over onto his side, facing Deirdre's peaceful form as he embraces her tightly. He pulls her close, their bodies pressed together in an intimate embrace. Slowly, he leans down and presses his lips to hers, their passion igniting once again. Rolling Deirdre onto her back, Cormac sits up and positions himself on top of her once again, their kisses growing more passionate by the second. Cormac pulls away and sits up on his knees between Deirdre's legs, gazing down at her with a smile. Cormac gently grasps her hips, pulling her closer, and with a delicate touch, he makes love to her once more. After they finish, they lay down together in a peaceful embrace. Cormac holds Deirdre close, savoring the feeling of their bodies intertwined and the warmth of her skin against his. They share more passionate kisses before gazing into each other's eyes with contented smiles. Eventually, their eyelids grow heavy and they drift off to sleep in each other's arms, their love and connection stronger than ever before Meanwhile, at Kate and Merig’s home, Kate is sitting in silence at the dining table with a cup of chamomile tea to calm herself. A moment later, there’s a knock at the door as she turns her attention to the knocking. She stands up from her chair and walks toward the door before she opens it and she sees Barth standing outside the door. Kate invites him inside and closes the door behind her as Barth notices her looking depressed and greets her with a smile.

(B)Hey, sis, how are you holding up?

(K)I want my husband home, that’s all I can think about.

(B)I know and we’ll bring him back, I promise. I just figured you would appreciate some company since you’ll be here alone all night.

(K)I’m fine, really, I’m acting as if he’s dead, but he’s not.

(B)I know it feels that way, doesn’t it?

(K)Yeah, it does, and it feels like a part of me is missing.

(B)I understand, and luckily he's alive, so we can rest easy about that.

(K)Yeah…Damn Sean, damn him to hell. Why does he have to be like this? Why can't he just leave me alone and not terrorize me? I’m living a peaceful life with a wonderful husband, but he just has to make life harder for me.

(B)People like him don't stop until they get what they want, and in this instance, it's you that he wants and he's using Merig to get to you, or in his case, he's using Merig to get you to come to him.

(K)This seems awfully familiar, doesn't it?

(B)Now that I think about it, yeah.

(K)Which means it's my turn to save him and I'll die trying if I have to.

(B)Hopefully, it doesn't come to that.

(K)I honestly don't care if it does. Merig didn't care, and he risked his life to save me and I'll do just the same for him. He's my husband and I'll die for him. That's how much I love him.

(B)I know you do, sis, and we'll make sure no one dies. We'll be there to protect you and Merig and fight Sean alongside you. He's not getting away with this.

(K)Thank you, Barth, for everything. I don't know what I would do if you all weren't here to help me.

(B)That’s what we're here for, Kate. You mean a lot to us and you're my sister-in-law. Also, Merig is my brother and I can't stand back and do nothing. He'd do the same for me, and he did when he fought Cormac, and I was able to leave the camp. He did the same for you and he'd do it for anyone he cares about, but for you the most.

(K)I know, he's the love of my life and the one I'll spend the rest of it with.

(B)We know you will, you're both perfect for each other.

(K)So I'm curious, what's going on with you and Sarah?

(B)Well, we had to postpone our date this weekend, but that's okay. Maybe I'll tell her how I feel about her during this trip.

(K)Do it whenever you feel the time is right.

(B)She really loves that necklace I gave her. She said she'll always wear it.

(K)[smiles] I'm very happy for you, Barth. You're both perfect for each other, too.

(B)Yeah, I guess so, I'm very nervous.

(K)That’s normal, but it's okay, you'll do just fine. I'll even let you in on a little secret.

(B)What?

(K)She smiles from ear to ear when she talks about you, but I won't give out any more information.

(B)That’s okay, I want her to tell me how she feels when I tell her the same.

(K)Go for it. I have a feeling she's very interested in you.

(B)I have a feeling, too, and I'm falling in love with her more each time I see her.

(K)That’s how it is. The same thing happened to me each time I saw Merig. I found myself smiling more. At the time, he knew nothing about my past, but he treated me with so much love and he still does. I'm the luckiest woman alive to be with someone who's so wonderful and he's not even human. But he doesn't have to be. I'll love him until my last breath.

(B)I know you will and he loves you more than any of the rest of us can understand.

(K)We know just how much we love each other, we are connected when we're together and we feel what the other is feeling. That's love.

(B)That’s right, you're the only one who truly knows and understands Merig on an intimate level. Even I don't know everything there is to know about my brother, but that's okay, that's where you come in.

(K)I’m just afraid of losing him again, I’m panicking internally and I’m trying not to have a meltdown.

(B)Hey, your big brother-in-law Barth is here so that you don’t.

(K)I know and you’re all the reason I’m not having a meltdown at this moment. I’m not sure if I’ll even be able to sleep. My mind is just racing and worrying about Merig.

(B)I understand, sis, I’m worried about him, too. But you need to get rest so we can set off tomorrow.

(K)[sigh] Yeah, you’re right. The sooner I sleep, the sooner I wake up and rescue my husband.

(B)I know you’re afraid of losing him, but we’ll make sure nothing bad happens to him or you since Sean is targeting you.

(K)I really appreciate it, Barth, talking is helping me not stress so much.

(B)Then I’ll stay up all night and talk to you if you need me to.

(K)You need to sleep, too. I wouldn’t want to keep you awake.

(B)Listen, I’m not going to get much sleep either worrying about my brother. There’s no reason why I can sit here with you and help us both, not stress.

(K)[smiles] Okay, I’m trying to relax by drinking some chamomile tea, but it’s only helping a little.

(B)Well, how about I join you? I’ll need to relax as well.

(K)Sounds good and then I’ll go to my bed and cuddle up to Merig’s pillow and hopefully fall asleep.

(B)When you do, I’ll leave and go home and rest as well.

(K)Alright, I’ll prepare your tea and then we can sit and talk.

(B)Sounds like a plan, sis.

A warm smile passes between them as Kate heads into the kitchen to brew another pot of tea for herself and Barth. They settle at the dining table, where laughter and conversation flow freely, easing their minds and filling the somber space with joy. As the evening wears on, the time comes for Barth to leave. He opens his arms wide, inviting Kate into a gentle embrace. They exchange heartfelt goodnights before he steps out into the night, making his way home. Kate locks the front door and ascends the stairs to her bedroom, flicking off the light as she crawls into bed. She wraps herself snugly in the blanket, clutching Merig’s pillow, hugging it close to her heart. Tears begin to form in her eyes as she buries her face in the soft fabric of the pillow, inhaling Merig's familiar scent. With her eyes closed, she slowly drifts into a peaceful slumber.
