--Chapter 1—
Modern Earth 20xx
I. He never really thought about it.
It had been almost 2 years since he started living on this town. It was a town near the foot of the mountains. Though it was a remote area, technology and area development wasn’t really delayed from main city. There was a railway that ranged from the main city to the remote towns and one of the stations was located there.
There were a few hiking and tourist spots. Most waterways were developed too. At the town’s borders ranged a huge crop field that spanned hectares of land towards the next town. It really was a great scenery if one would be able to climb a cliff, sniff the fresh province air at the clifftop park, and take a photo.
The brightest of the sun that day could be felt by anyone outside. One should really need to hydrate and find themselves a shade of a tree or a waiting shed, unless carrying an umbrella.
The park was not really that big, but at that moment there were some tourists sight-seeing at the scenery provided by nature. Besides the people touring the place, he could be found sitting at one of the cottages near the cliff-side.
Cicadas were noisy,
Dragonflies tried to battle the wind blowing against the direction they were flying,
A cat was purring beside him.
“Come to think of it, this was really a sudden decision.”
Sweat droplets skid down Fred’s face.
“I never really thought about it... Didn't I?”
Frederie Spence. It was a name that he came up with when he first arrived in this town. A name to cover up for his real identity just in case people of this land foreign to him knew about his real identity. It took him half a year to process citizenship within the country, and another six months to finally settle on this town: earning money and paying tax included.
He started with zero so climbing his way up was really a hell of an experience.
You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.
This was an exact opposite of the life he experienced on the place he lived on before this town where he had everything he needed. He lived a life of luxury, royalty, and evil. But thinking about that change didn’t bother him anymore.
Whistling
He held a mid-sized canvas board and a pencil.
He was not the best, but also was not on the average. He’s just as good as any other artist you can find beside the train station, providing free drawing service out of hobby.
Whistling
The figure he’s drawing was neither a realistic human sketch, nor a scenery of the town below. It was a cute girl on a sailor uniform, with big rounded eyes, cute lashes, pouty lips, glittering background and hands positioned below her chin doing a cute pose.
It seemed like something you picked out of a cartoon series and put on a canvas board
Several tens of meters below the cliff he could see clearly a rooftop of a high school building. Not much student would like to spend their lunch at the rooftop at this time of the day. It would feel like witch being burnt at stake.
But it being uncrowded also meant that someone will use it either for cutting classes or for confession purposes. The idea was simple: you sleep at an available shade or you bring a girl at the rooftop, then you confess.
And what was instructed to him was right: People should be there.
Afar from the cliff he could already see a couple of young ones flirting behind the block of the roof deck entrance. It was a blind spot from a different point of view but of course it was not if you’re a spectator from a far higher place.
The angle was perfect
He could see the girl blushing as she’s being pushed to the wall by the guy.
I really get the feeling I’m doing something illegal. Or wait—isn’t it them doing something bad? This really feels like watching either a confession or an extortion, or rather blackmailing?
Or maybe...
An assault!!
“—Or not. She seems like she’s having fun. This really is real-time flirting.”
Applying finishing touches to his sketch, he took gulped his cold drink empty and threw it to the trash can. He almost made the shot count though. He stood up and went the direction of the trashcan, picked the trash up and put it where it should belong.
Carrying a sling bag, he covered his vision with the shade of his arm, and looked at the scene again.
“Kabedon, huh? Sure looks fun. This world really has it easy.”
His phone rang.
A picture of a girl winking while sticking out her tongue could be seen. Her hair is bob-cut with the shade of mahogany. But what’s alluring was her well-developed proportions.
“Ara, huh?”
Letting out a sigh, he answered the phone.
“There won’t be any single moment where you will not monitor me isn’t it?”
“WHEEEERE AAAAAARE YOOOOOU??!!”
“Yes, yes I’m going home now~”
“It has been 4 hours since you left the unit and you still haven’t even notified me?!!”
“Yes, yes I’m going home now~”
“Wait wha—come on! You can’t tell me the exact sentence twice using the same tone! Come home I miss you!!”
“sigh”
“Eh?! Don’t give me that!! You have piles of work to do here!!”
“Yes, yes I’m going home now~”
He could be seen walking out of the park while talking to the phone, repeating the same exact sentence every time answering.
