Stepping away from me and heading back towards his seat. Mancin said, "Why don't you try using your new spell matrix. Just so you know what it feels like to cast one. It will help stop you getting the phobia about using spell matrixes, most apprentices are prone to. Yes, spell matrixes are temporary, unless they're a part of your core matrix. But once you make a spell matrix, it gets easier to make it again.”
Giving me an accusing look, He said: "So there is no reason to hold onto one like it's more important than it is.” Holding up my hands in surrender, I said, "No, no, you don't have to tell me. I totally get it, I don't plan on not using this spell matrix. I'll do it right now if it will put your mind at ease.” shaking his head in encouragement. He said, "Good, you do that, and after, we can talk about. Some of your other problem areas that I noticed.” Looking at him confused, I said, "What other problem areas? I didn't even bring up anything except this spell matrix.” His face sternly scrunched, He said, "There's no need to worry it's not that serious, for now. Anyway, we'll get to that after you use your spell matrix .”
Getting into a more comfortable position, I thought over what I knew about casting a spell matrix. After forming a spell matrix, it would stay in your body until you used it. All you had to do was insert your awareness into the spell matrix to activate it. After being cast, it would disintegrate. But just like with forming a spell matrix, the process is essential. If you don't control how you put your awareness into a spell matrix. It can affect how much mana you waste and the area affected by a cast spell matrix.
With Mancin's words still fresh in my mind,. I decided to just go for it and not worry about if I did something wrong. That caused the Spell matrix not to work. When I could just make another spell matrix if it didn't work. Taking a deep, slow breath, I sunk my awareness into my body. I'm not sure what it was, but the minute I found my awareness surrounded by the currents of mana. I knew exactly where my spell matrix was. Sending my awareness, streaming towards the spot where I felt the matrix.
Just as my awareness touched the spell matrix. It seeped into the runes and flowing the connections. Causing the whole matrix to shine brightly. A wave of mana spread from the spell matrix. Feeling the surge of mana rather than seeing it surround my body. I could barely contain my excitement, as I felt the feeling of weightlessness take ahold of me. Trying to pull most of my awareness away from the spell matrix without stopping it. It was like splitting your concentration in two.
Sure reading a book, while you ate an apple wasn't hard. But trying spinning an apple on your finger. While at the same time, striving to carry on a full conversation and walk. That's the level of difficulty an apprentice has to deal with to use spell matrixes.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
But I was determined to succeed on my first try. I had all this knowledge and these experiences crammed in my head. I should definitely be able to do this easily. Separating a few strands of my awareness, to keep the spell matrix going. Turned out to be easier than I thought it would. Sure, I had a few slip-ups as I tried to withdraw most of my awareness from the spell matrix.
But pretty soon I was looking at Mancin as I floated above the couch in an awkward sitting position. Smiling at me, He said, "Not to bad on your first try casting a spell matrix. Your hold on the spell matrix seems to be pretty steady and your casting time is about two minutes. Overall I'd rate you a solid two out of five on the casters scale. Which isn't bad, considering most apprentices rate one at best. Of course, there are exceptions, but I'd say one out of every twenty or so apprentices. No, come down so we can talk.”
Breaking my connection with the spell matrix, I immediately felt it disintegrate. With it keeping me up, I plopped down onto the couch. Letting out a huff, as I righted myself on the couch. I said, "There, I've used my spell matrix. Now can you tell me about these problem areas of mine?” Rolling his eyes, at my Antics. He said, "Ugh, I see hanging out with Madison bad behavior has rubbed on you. Anyway, what I wanted to talk to you about was, well. I'm not trying to sound degrading about where you come from. But because from what you've shone. Of your splotchy knowledge of magic, at least the magi type of magic. Which isn't really surprising, considering high cliff is a more shaman dominate province. That just won't work out well for Edens admissions tests.”
Coughing, he waved at the same bookcase from before. Causing two books this time to come flying over, landing beside the others already on the table. Moving all the books in a row. He said, "Now, I'm more than willing to help you with whatever and whenever you need. But making sure your fundamentals, are more well rounded. I'd like for you to take these books to study.” Pointing at the new addition, on the far left of the row of books on the table. He said “This book is called spatermer’s brake, it's more of a study guide. On how to break down spell matrixes, into pieces and decipher how those pieces go together. It's a great book for budding apprentices to really learn the more intricate parts of spellcraft.”
Moving to the new addition to its right. He said “This book is called Junior's almanac, it basically a listing of runes and their uses. One of my favorite sayings is if you know the use of a rune than you know a component of a spell matrix.” Waving his hand towards the books that had already been on the table, he said, "These are more advanced books. Just in case you get done with the beginner level reading and want to give the advance stuff a shot. You can take these too but just make sure you have the basics down first.”
