Chapter 4: Chelsea

Chapter 4: Chelsea

Being a witch had its perks. Always being a suspect anytime magic was used in your city, wasn’t one of them.

The pounding on my door screamed cop. I opened it to find an ugly white guy who was obviously single. He wore an off-the-rack suit with boxed brown dress shoes and a black belt. He didn’t bother to button his suit jacket and I could see his holstered pistol under his left arm. His aura was red.

The man held up a cell phone looking back and forth between the phone and me.

“Ms. Daniels, I need you to come with me.”

“Show me some ID.”

He pulled out his badge and showed me. I didn’t like what I saw. This guy worked for an organization that only conspiracy theorists and politicians knew existed.

“What does she want with me? My debt was paid.”

“I was told to tell you that as long as you cooperate, your secret will remain that way. If you refuse to be of assistance your life will get difficult.”

“Yeah? She said that last time.”

I put on my “So Eleonor” ankle boots, grabbed my Saint Laurent handbag, and followed him out. I could see that two of my neighbors had come outside. I discretely signaled to them that I was okay.

I tend to surround myself with non-humans. They are a loyal and paranoid bunch. Quick to violence and slow to ask why.

There was a black Tahoe parked outside of my house. I walked up to it and waited for him to open my door. He either didn’t see me waiting or ignored me and went to the driver’s side of the vehicle. I continued to wait.

I heard a door open on the other side of the car, but it wasn’t the driver that came around to open my door. Instead, a ruggedly handsome black man wearing tactical gear opened it and held out his hand. I hesitated before taking it. He had no visible aura. I couldn’t sense any magical items on him though.

He used his other hand to open my door. I took his hand and stepped up onto the side rail to get into the large vehicle. I thanked him. He gave me a smile that didn’t reach his eyes and closed my door. He walked back around and got in beside me.

From the front seat, I heard the voice of the devil.

“Chelsea, this is Alan Adams with Sac Sheriffs S.W.A.T. Alan, this is Chelsea Daniels, a witch.”

“Nice to meet you.” He said as he held out his hand to shake mine.

“Likewise. “

“Mr. Adams was leading an operation this morning and ran into a Class A Lycan who was harder to take down than should be. On top of that, once dispatched, the Lycan did not revert back to his human form.”

Alan pulled out a phone from one of his many pockets. On the phone was a photo of an amulet. It was made of bronze and ringed in silver. The design was a simple one. It had the different phases of the moon.

Alan spoke up.

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

“The Class A was wearing this.”

“Do you know what it is or where it came from?” Riley asked.

“No, I don’t.”

“How long will it take you to find out?”

“That depends. Was this wolf part of the local pack?”

“He was, but it seems his hobbies were not in line with said pack.”

“I have a few contacts I can reach out to. Give me a few days.”

“You have 48 hours. Now for the real reason, I came all the way out here. Mr. Adams met Romulus today.”

I gasped. It didn’t go unnoticed by Alan. He turned in his seat to face me.

“Who is Romulus? Agent Riley has been adamant about avoiding that question so far.”

“You can tell him,” Riley said to me.

“Romulus is the oldest living werewolf. Older than the oldest on official record by at least 100 years. The council calls him in whenever a pack is doing things they shouldn’t. How did you get away?”

“I didn’t. He left my team and me to fight the Class A alone. I haven’t seen him since.”

“That’s not possible. Cop or not, Romulus doesn’t leave witnesses.”

“You all seem to know about him and as far as I can tell you’re not dead.”

“Riley works for an organization he doesn’t want to make waves with and I. Well, let’s just say that he and I have a history.”

Alan tilted his head at me and raised one eyebrow. I didn’t elaborate.

“How is he allowed to kill whomever he wants and just get away with it and why is there no record of him?

“Mr. Adams, that information is many levels of clearance above what I have been authorized to give you.”

“Okay, then what is the council?”

“The council is made up of select Class A’s from specific bloodlines. They govern all of the alphas.”

“What? Why isn’t this information public knowledge?”

“Because Mr. Adams, there are some things the public doesn’t need to know for reasons you don’t need to know. So, drop it.”

“If Romulus let him live, you know he’s going to come looking for him.”

“Yes, that is why I need you to reach out to him and set up a meeting. Time is running out and I need to know what his involvement means.”

“How many times do we have to go over this? He wants nothing to do with me.”

“ I know you have ways of making contact. Don’t play dumb with me Ms. Daniels.”

I really did hate that woman. She knew too much and I could never find out how.

“I’ll try and arrange something for tonight,” I said

“No, not tonight. I have an important dinner with my girlfriend.”

“Mr. Adams, your marriage proposal will have to wait.”

“How did you.” She cut him off.

“Mr. Adams, I work for a part of the government that doesn’t exist unless you know where to look. I’m sure you’ve seen a movie or read a book about people like me.”

“I don’t care who you work for. I will be at that dinner and I’ll meet your Romulus tomorrow.”

Riley finally turned around in her seat so she could face Alan. She stared at him for an uncomfortable amount of time before breaking the silence.

“Ms. Daniels, please contact me as soon as you have a time set.”

“Sure,” I said with as much contempt as I could put in my voice.

“You can go now.”

I sat there and waited. Again, it was Alan who was the gentleman. He got out and walked around to open my door. Like before, he held out his hand and helped me out of the large vehicle.

“Mr. Adams, I have to ask. What kind of name is Alan Adams for someone of your ethnicity?”

“I was adopted.”

I expected him to be offended by my question, but he didn’t seem to care that I asked such an inappropriate question. He was an intriguing man.

“Ah, I see. Well, it was nice to meet you, Mr. Adams. I only wish it could have been on better terms. I imagine I’ll be seeing you again.”

“Have a good day Ms. Daniels.”

“You as well Mr. Adams.”

He watched as I walked back into my home. As I shut the door, I saw him get back in the vehicle and then they were gone. Now I had to find Romulus
