My senses were overloaded. The smell of fear was intoxicating, the sound of their hearts beating a rhythm I wanted to dance to. Except there was a problem. Alan and the tall dark one smelled like the wolf I had met.
I knew what had happened to my fiance, but we weren’t expecting another wolf to be here.
“Isidra?” Alan's voice was small and weak.
A few days ago his voice would have brought me comfort. Today, there was nothing. No part of me reacted to hearing him call my name.
“Yes, my love. It’s me.” I said
Mike, the ever-faithful pet, had his gun pointed at me. A stunning Latina was there too. She hid her fear well, but I could smell it rolling off of her as if she had bathed in it.
“I leave for a few days and you already found a new woman? At least you stuck with Latina. You always did have a type, honey.” I taunted
I could hear everything going on inside the house. The others were making short work of the Feds inside. I was jealous. The muffled sounds of men dying, of their blood being drained, were intoxicating. Given the look on Alan’s face, he heard it too.
“Your men need help inside,” Alan said to the pretty woman.
“Chel-” her response was cut off by an explosion inside the house.
For a brief second, the night was bright as day. I had to shield my eyes. Not that this light could hurt me, but I flinched.
When I opened my eyes, I looked toward the house.
A thin blonde woman came walking out. She was naked but didn’t have a scratch on her. My first thought was how good and ridiculous she looked walking toward us in her Jimmy Choos. My second thought was that she must be a witch.
My third thought came too late. Vampires have a speed advantage over witches, but if a powerful Witch catches you off guard it’s not likely you will survive. Given the display she just put on, I was betting she was a powerful witch.
I tried to move toward her, but I couldn’t. I was trapped. She didn’t raise her arms up or give any kind of warning that she was going to do magic. She just stared at me as she moved closer.
“I killed 4 inside. How many others are there?” She asked me.
I didn’t respond.
Pain engulfed my entire body. As much as it hurt, I remember the odd feeling I got when my body naturally wanted to curl up from the pain but couldn’t. It’s something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Hell, any enemy.
“Alan, what do you smell?” The blonde asked when I still refused to speak. She cranked up the pain.
Part of me realized the other wolf had gone. I didn’t even notice.
Alan lifted his nose up like the filthy dog he was and sniffed.
“It’s hard to tell what’s what. I’m still new to this super senses thing” Alan replied.
“Smell her. The others will smell similar if not identical.”
Alan walked up to me without fear. Worry and sadness covered his face for a brief moment before he put on his always-present stoic mask. He sniffed me.
“All I smell is fear. How do I even know what fear smells like?”
The pain stopped as quickly as it started.
Alan came face to face with me.

“I won’t let her or anyone else kill you,” he whispered.
I knew the idiot was telling the truth. Even as a monster, he still loved me and wanted to protect me. He sniffed again then walked around in a wide circle.
“Two more. Another vampire and a wolf?” Alan said.
“Is that a question or a statement?” asked the Latina woman whose name I just remembered. It was Agent Riley from the hospital.
“Both,” Alan responded.
“Is that Romulus you smell?” the blonde asked.
I had been told about Romulus. He was a problem. Our “gracious” werewolf host told me he was the oldest wolf on the planet. We had hoped to reach Alan before he did, but it seems we were too late.
Both Jack and the wolf had a serious grudge against Romulus. Neither was very open about why.
“No,” was all Alan said.
“Then it’s Remus,” the blonde said
So that was his name. Why did that ring a bell? Remus and Romulus. Something about those names was nagging at the back of my mind.
“Why is a werewolf working with vamps?” Mike asked.
I had honestly forgotten he was here. He had been so quiet, which wasn’t like him.
“Which way?” asked the blonde.
Alan pointed behind me.
“Juanita, do you have any more men here?”
“No. This is just a safe house. We had the agent who was with me and the two who escorted Alan here. They were all inside of the house.”
“We need to leave. Do you have anything to bind her with?” The blonde asked Jaunita.
“In the SUV. The keys were with Agent Ayers.”
“Michael, get the keys. Alan, I need you to bind her when we get in the truck.”
This chick was a badass. If I didn’t want to rip her throat out, I would like her. Maybe I still liked her, but she needed to die.
I was dragged along, floating above the ground as we headed toward the car. Mike had run off like a good boy to search the dead for the keys.
Mike had always been the Ron to Alan’s Harry. The two were inseparable. Even now, he had left his wife to come be by Alan’s side. In life, I had always been jealous of that. Now in death, I pitied Shelia for having a husband who cared more about his friend than his wife.
A howl pierced the night. I had heard wolves howl before, but this seemed different somehow. Maybe it was my Vampire senses.
Alan clapped his hands over his ears and dropped to the ground. When the howling stopped, he looked up and his eyes were glowing gold. I knew there was a reason for the different colors, but I didn’t know what they were.
“What’s wrong?” asked Juanita.
“I think he wants me to help him in the fight,” Alan said.
“What fight?” the still-naked blonde asked.
I listened closely to the area around me. It took a minute, but I picked up on the sounds of a battle. Jack and our host seemed to be giving the other wolf a hard time. From what I could hear, they weren’t winning, but neither was he.
“You can’t go. You’ve never transformed before and you aren’t trained as a wolf yet. You can’t even transform yet, not before the full moon,” Juanita said.
“I found the keys!” came Mike’s voice from the house.
He came running out, holding the keys up in the air.
“Did any of my men survive?”
“No, ma’am”
“Damnit”
“You’ll have time to mourn later,” said the blonde.
The howl cut through the air again. This time Alan curled up into a ball writhing in pain. Something was happening to him.
“Romulus is forcing the change” Juanita gasped.
“I thought that was a myth” Mike responded.
I stared in awe as Alan began changing in front of us. His face and hands grew longer. Fur started coming out of everywhere. It was just like the videos they show you in nursing school. I had never seen it in person though.
“We can’t let him change. Can you do anything?” Juanita asked the blonde.
The blonde woman knelt down and put her hands on Alan, quickly snatching them back as if his skin were hot to the touch. She let her hands hover over him, palms down.
As she concentrated on Alan, I felt her hold on me start to loosen. I did my best not to let it show that I noticed anything.
Alan’s screams of pain rang through the darkness around us. I could still hear the sounds of battle off in the distance. It sounded like my team was winning.
“Rommuluss’ hold on him is too powerful. If I keep this up, it will kill him.”
As if to prove her point, Alan began to convulse. He was halfway between human and wolf, writhing on the ground.
For a brief second, I felt concerned for him. The man I love was in unbelievable pain. Then it passed.
“He can take it. If he changes, we are all in danger.” Juanita said.
The blonde redoubled her efforts, but It was too much for her and everything changed at once.
Her magical grip on me vanished as she passed out. Alan stopped convulsing and his transformation continued. I sprang into action, going straight for Juanita.
I reached her before she or Mike realized I had moved. My fangs sank into the soft flesh of her neck. Warm sweet blood filled my mouth. It was the single most erotic and delicious thing that had happened in my life up to that point.
Everything around me was drowned out by the sound of her heartbeat slowing. It was as if the rest of the world had disappeared. Only she and I existed in that moment and I wanted to savor it. I drank deeply as I held her close to me. I could feel myself dripping. I didn’t know that was still possible. I drank deeper. An embarrassingly loud moan escaped me as I came harder than I had when I was living. My legs quivered and I almost fell to the ground.
Then excruciating pain crashed into me. Mike had come to his senses and shot me. Three silver bullets were lodged in my back.
As I whipped around to face Mike, I could feel my body evicting the silver from me. It hurt like hell.
“I used to like you, Michael” I growled.
“Now I have to kill you.”
I moved quicker than he could track, but I slammed into a furry wall.
