Chapter 16: Erik

Chapter 16: Erik

“Romulus has been in contact with me” I announced to the rest of the council.

“What does he want now?” asked Joel, the youngest council member.

“Watch how you speak about your elder and our most valued asset, pup” was the response from Veronica, a middle-ranking member of the council.

Joel was prepared to reply, but then he heard Abraham clearing his throat and his response died on his tongue.

“As I was saying. Romulus has been in contact. He found a young man in Sacramento, California that was being tracked by Jack.”

“What business is it of ours if the fangs are tracking a human?” Veronica asked.

“There’s something special about this human. For one, he had no scent, and more importantly, Romulus turned him.”

The whole room broke into gasps and side conversations.

The sound of a gavel hitting the wood table brought everyone to order and silence once again took its place in the room.

Abraham spoke up in his calm, low voice.

“Romulus hasn’t turned someone since any of us were born. We need more information. When will he be returning and is he bringing the man cub?”

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

“I’m not sure. Last I spoke with him, he was heading to one of the DAME’s black sites to persuade the young man to come here.”

“When we have more information, we will reconvene and discuss this further. Do we have anything else?” Abraham said.

Half an hour later the meeting was adjourned and Abraham instructed everyone to leave but me.

As he was exiting the room, Joel turned to look at us. He didn’t say anything, but I could tell he wanted to.

Before he joined the council, Joel had an issue with Romulus and the freedom he is allowed. He suspects that something is not being shared with the entire council and he is right, but he doesn’t know that.

Given the nature of our abilities, certain precautions have been taken to ensure privacy for our council meetings. The conference room we use has no windows, no air vents and is completely soundproof. We take several precautions when we have meetings to make sure that we don’t suffocate.

Once the last member exited the room, Abraham turned to look at me.

“What didn’t you share with the rest of the council?”

“Chelsea is with them and Remus is involved somehow. He hasn’t seen him, but he was attacked by Jack and a group of fangs. He said that he could smell Remus nearby” I said

“Things must be dire if he is involving Chelsea. Has the location of the master been compromised?” He asked.

“No”

“Good, but if Remus is involved we know that’s what will be at risk eventually.”

“The only person he ever turned was Remus. He swore he would never do that again. What could make him change his mind?”

Abraham didn’t answer for a long minute.

“I can’t begin to fathom what would make him go back on his vow. Whatever it is, it doesn’t bode well for us.”

“What do you think we should do brother?”

“What we always do. Trust our father.”

The two of us headed for the door. As I put my hand on the handle, Abraham stopped me.

“We need to contact her and make sure the entrance to the master’s prison is still secure.”

“Who would be foolish enough to enter if they could? He’s the only one who can get in and out of that place.”

“True, but anyone smart enough to figure out the location of the prison may be smart enough to find a loophole. Remember, with magic, there’s always another way.”
