Chapter 2: Problematic Practice

Alice stopped behind a tree, with Devo and Shira standing behind her, and peeked around it at the group of wolves, which all had white and green fur with giant tails, patrolling the area. Devo looked back at the city and turned back to Alice when she tapped him on the shoulder.

"Ok before we fight those Tornado Wolves, We should come up with a strategy," Alice said. She asked the other two to open their statuses. After opening all of their statuses, Alice told them to go to their class tab. Alice quickly looked through all of the classes and formulated a plan.

"Ok, I got it; I'll cause a distraction on the other side of the clearing. Shira will buff Devo's fire magic and then you'll wipe them all out with one shot.". Alice smugly grinned, thinking her plan was pretty good. Devo scratched his head.

"I assumed we were going to get used to combat, not just wipe out a bunch of weird coloured wolves.". Alice's expression shifted to a shocked and confused one, even having a transparent question mark appearing above her head. She slowly twiddled her fingers together and stated she just wanted to test out those three things before trying direct combat, mumbling some of her words. Shira agreed with Alice's plan and both of the girls stared right into Devo's eyes. Devo rolled his eyes and said he'd follow the plan. Alice got silently excited and did a fist pump. However, her celebration, at getting Devo to agree to her plan, was cut short when he asked how to use magic or skills, in the VR version. Alice sighed with frustration.

After a short explanation, Alice took out two frisbee-sized silver throwing rings out of her inventory and Shira took out her magium staff. The gem on her staff started to glow and created a red magic circle. Shira finished her casting and pointed her staff at Devo. The magic circle disappeared and a faint glow appeared around Devo before shortly disappearing. Devo noticed a small square appeared, of a flame, in the bottom left of his peripheral vision.

"You ready?" Alice asked as she recoiled her arms. Devo nodded his head and began to cast Burning Flash, causing small flames to form around his right arm. Alice watched the Storm Wolves patrol around the clearing. She noticed that four of the six wolves were close enough together and took her chance. She simultaneously tossed the throwing rings. The rings flew above the wolves and, the moment they clashed, a high-pitched bird noise erupted from the two rings. The wolves instinctively jumped up at the disks, believing they were a bird. The moment all four wolves were in the air, Devo's arm was completely shrouded in flames before he fired off the Burning Flash. A beam of fire erupted from his arm and raced towards the wolves.

Before they could respond, the four wolves were instantly overpowered by the fire that raced past them. The wolves' fur started to turn black and glowing bold numbers appeared next to each of the wolves displaying the damage dealt to them. All of the burned wolves collapsed to the ground. One of the burnt wolves started to get back up but Alice's rings struck the wolf's neck, defeating it. The rings flew back to Alice and she caught them. Alice grinned while getting ready to attack again.

"This is way better than the PC version right Devo?". Devo's arm made multiple clicking noises as he moved his arm.

"It's certainly more immersive if anything else.". Devo braced himself as the remaining two wolves' green fur began to faintly glow and the wind started to swirl around their tails. Shira started to cast an enchanter spell, signified by a silver magic circle. While Shira was halfway through casting her spell, Devo dashed towards the wolves as they started to charge towards Shira. He caught the attention of the wolves, causing them to halt their charge. Devo took this chance to attack; he attempted to roundhouse kick the wolf, on his left, but he completely over-shoot his kick and struck down the tree next to the wolf. Before he could even react, Devo was struck in the back by the wolf's tail. The wolf activated its Wind Bash skill and launched him into the sky.

"Oh..." Alice muttered as she watched Devo fly upwards before crashing on top of a tree in the distance. Shira became a little apprehensive of the wolves and wondered if she should cancel her current spell.

"Alice?". Alice looked back at Shira and asked her if her spell was ready. Shira nodded her head up and down. She proceeded to cast Keen Eye on Alice, causing her eyes to faintly glow. The wolves, in response to Shira casting her spell, started to form small tornados around their tails.

"You should probably get behind me, Shira.". Shira did as Alice instructed and ducked behind her. Alice crossed her arms, causing the silver throwing rings to be covered in a thin layer of blue magic, and waited for the wolves to attack. The wolves launched their attacks, which transformed into multiple air blades, at Alice. Alice countered their flurry of attacks by tossing her throwing rings and the layer of blue magic split off from the rings and formed four more blue throwing rings. Her throwing rings clashed with the air blades before slicing through them. With the assistance of keen eye, Alice easily struck the weak points of the wind blades forcing them to disperse and disappear.

She quickly followed this up by using her Spinner Frenzy skill. The throwing rings' spinning and movement speed rapidly increased before relentlessly striking the wolves. After a few seconds, the blue rings disappeared and Alice caught her throwing rings. Shira peeked around Alice and was surprised by the results of Alice's attack. The wolves were covered in multiple slash wounds and the fur around the wounds was lightly soaked with blood. The wolves eventually collapsed from the accumulated damage, causing Alice and Shira to let out a relieved sigh. Alice placed her rings back into her inventory and raised her hand for a high five. Shira awkwardly put her staff back in her inventory and gave Alice a high five.

"Well, that could have gone better, right Shira?" Alice asked while letting out a chuckle. Shira agreed but was puzzled by something.

"Something wrong?". Alice leaned in front of Shira, wondering what was puzzling her.

"Shouldn't monsters usually turn into... you know... items and exp when all the aggravated monsters are defeated?". Alice realized Shira was right and wondered why the wolves hadn't converted yet. However, her question was quickly answered when Devo emerged from the trees and landed in front of them. Alice was about to tease Devo for how bad the aim of his kick was, but got distracted by the small creature that was biting his head. She snatched the tiny fox, which had pink and magenta fur; with three long tails that had white tips, from Devo's head and showed Shira.

"This has got to be the derpiest thing I've ever seen," Alice remarked while stroking the fox's head. Shira wanted to stroke the fox as well but was a little apprehensive about doing so.

"You don't have to worry Shira, Cotton Inquisitors only attack people who use dark type magic or someone who tries to keep cotton candy from them," Devo explained while he was examining the Tornado Wolves' bodies.

"You wanna hold them?" Alice asked. Shira extended her left arm and Alice handed the fox over. Alice found the way Shira was carrying the fox and her panda plushie in each of her arms highly amusing. They were both surprised when a pop-up appeared in front of Shira with the following text.

[Cotton Inquisitor desires to become your companion]

[Accept?]

[Yes/No]

"I guess they like you, Shira.". Shira wasn't sure what to do.

"Should I choose yes?". Alice thought about it, causing small thought bubbles to appear around her head.

"Well... It's pretty rare for these guys to appear in the wild, let alone be this willing to be tamed. So, I'd suggest you should, I mean they're cute so what's the harm?". Thanks to Alice's suggestion, Shira made up her mind and tried to press the yes button, but couldn't reach it due to having her hands full. The fox reached out and managed to press the yes button for her, causing the pop-up to disappear and the fox's status screen to appear in its place. Alice walked around the screen and stood next to Shira. The two of them read through the information.

"A Level two-hundred and forty-six female Star-glitter Cotton Inquisitor. I guess the level and rare variant make sense since Devo... found... them?". Alice realized that Shira was confused again. Alice asked her what she was confused about.

"What is a..." Shira quickly looked back at the status screen and then back at Alice.

"Star-glitter?". Alice explained it's referring to a special effect applied to a pet and in the fox's case it's referring to the glitter that flies of its fur. Alice ruffled the fox's fur, causing sparkly magic glitter to fly off it, and disappears after floating a few millimeters away from the fox's fur.

"So, is there anything else you like to ask?". Shira looked back at the status screen.

"How do I name them?". Alice pointed to the blank rectangle at the top of the status screen; Alice also mentioned that the character limit was around twenty-five. Shira thought about a name for the fox. Alice watched Shira type Bon-Bon with her nose. Shira looked at Alice and asked if it was a good name. Alice gave a thumbs up. Shira clicked confirm and the status screen closed. The moment that the status screen closed, the bodies of all the wolves suddenly bursted into tiny blue cubes and green orbs. All the green orbs gathered into three identical green orbs and the cubes gathered together into various loot, consisting of Storm Wolf Pelts, Wind Magi-Stone, and various Valt coins.

"How odd," Devo muttered. Alice thought about the recent events and tried to figure out what just happened. She suddenly figured it out and a light bulb appeared above her head.

"I got it!". Devo, Shira, and BB looked at Alice. Alice explained that loot and exp don't spawn until all the aggravated monsters in an encounter have been defeated. So when BB attacked Devo, she was countered as an enemy monster, and when Shira tamed BB. She was removed from the group of enemies and the encounter ended.

"Right...". Devo opened the party menu and clicked on the quick loot split. All the looted gathered together into a blue cube before splitting into three identical smaller cubes. One cube and one exp orb flew into everyone's inventory. The group realized that the sun was starting to set.

"We should probably head back and find somewhere to stay for the night," Devo mentioned. He tried to remember the locations of the inns located around the city and even opened the world map, but was interrupted by Alice waving her hand in front of his face.

"Yeah?".

"If you're worried about finding somewhere for us to stay; we can just stay at my place." Alice smugly grinned, while adding he wouldn't be having this problem if he hadn't been so insistent on making his Eldrian Tales character a wanderer.

"And you're sure your house even exists in this world?".

"Well... it was the place I started in when I appeared in this world. So, obviously I would kno-". Alice's sentence was cut short by Devo when he flicked her nose. She covered her nose and mumbled angrily.

"Yeah yeah I get it. I'm an idiot. let's just get going before it gets too dark.".

"At least you know you are one.". Alice huffed and stormed off, with Shira following behind her. Devo stood up and followed shortly behind them, wondering why a Cotton Inquisitor was in this forest in the first place.
