Selia was the guild receptionist who worked with confirming and registering the jobs. She was someone who couldn't stand adventurers since they were a lazy and noisy bunch, but working in the guild was a lot easier and paid better than most jobs. That was why she endured the hassle.
“He didn't come today either… Did he give up on life as an adventurer or is someone breaking the rules?”
Regulus, also known as Regis to Selia, didn't show up at the guild for three days in a row. He looked like an earnest kid and he was the only one who worked seriously lately, so he stood out like a sore thumb. He didn't seem like the type who would make deals with merchants of the area…
To avoid giving the commission to the guild, some merchants would try to make deals directly with the adventurers. That was against the law with anything related to the dungeons, but since the head of the Dawnshield family has been away for a while, people have been trying to pull that kind of scheme.
While she was thinking about that, she heard the sound of a table cracking and then another fight broke out… she sighed while wondering why those idiots don’t have to suffer a bit in their lives. Even though the dungeon was only on the serpentine rank, it was enough to make those killing monsters inside live an easy life… it was all thanks to the prosperity the empire granted in the last few decades.
Another reason for that was the fact that without the top dogs in the area, the clients were willing to pay a bit more to secure the materials or the tasks that they needed. Things would remain like that for a while longer until everything stabilizes.
After letting out a sigh, she heard the sound of the door of the entrance moving… it was noon and it was a bit early for anyone to show up. Few people left to work that day and those who did it had returned before noon. Much to her surprise, it was the boy Regis… he looked a bit tired and dirty, and he was also smelling like blood. Despite that, it didn’t look like he had many materials with him. Before long, he approached the counter and then put one of his bags on it.
“I want to sell these.”
Selia opened the bag and then found a large amount of mana cores… she never found a large amount like that brought by a single person. It felt like Regis stayed in the dungeon for three days to get all of these and her guess was right.
“Please, wait a minute until I confirm all of the mana cores to be real.”
Regulus felt a bit uncomfortable thanks to all the stares in the guild, but he was a bit too tired to care. Besides, that would be the last time those people would be seeing him, after all, so it was fine.
… …
I decided to finish things fast in Pirla town once I heard that the boss of the tenth floor was an alpha-horned wolf that had the ability to summon other wolves to help him. I wondered if I could let the creature keep spawning them in order to give me the chance to get mana cores faster. In my experience, the chance for the mana cores to be found was one in five.
As it turned out, the experiment worked… the alpha was two times bigger than the other horned wolves, but it wasn’t ten times tougher. After it got ten bolts on its body, it got weakened enough to focus on only summoning its minions to fight for him… I used the boss chamber to farm mana cores.
‘I didn’t think that I would be lucky enough to find a place like this, though.’

I had the options between Farmer, Fishermen, and Scribe and I chose the Scribe because it granted me the chance to improve my mana regeneration. There was another reason for it, but that could wait.

The receptionist lady soon confirmed all the mana cores and then handed me forty-one Terra coins. She also asked me for my card to upgrade it… she gave me a copper one a few minutes later with my information upgraded. The information there was mostly mistaken, the real was something like this.

“I want to sell these too.”
I handed the other bag and then the receptionist lady grimaced thanks to the smell of blood. The parts of the alpha-horned wolf were there, after all. So, it couldn’t be helped. I tried to take only the most valuable parts that couldn’t rot, but it was still smelly. I wished I could turn all that into gear, but I didn’t want to stand out yet… and my crossbow broke thanks to overuse, so I needed all the money available to restart in another town. I had to leave before the bandits in the town decided to target me. Even if I was smelly and covered in scratch wounds.
“All the parts can be sold for ten Terra coins and fifty Breeze coins.”
“All right.”
Using all my savings to make the crossbow had been a good idea… I earned ten times more after three days of work and now I could leave the town just in time as I had planned. I had to skip two nights of sleep, though.
I headed to the train station in a hurry since the next train would depart at two in the afternoon. The guy whom I paid the fee to raised his eyebrows while looking at me, but they couldn’t demand anything else aside from the money. I had the money to move away a bit more this time, but I decided to follow the original route instead. The further away from home I stayed, the better it would be, but since I didn’t find anyone looking for me, I thought that I had some leeway and everyone at home thought that I had died… with those thoughts in mind, I took a nap.
… …
A couple of hours after Regulus left the guild, some knights appeared in the guild with a poster and then put several of them on the guild and they also put a job of a special rank. Anyone could accept it… they were offering five Ignis coins for any information about Regulus.
Everyone got interested in it… they had heard about the dhampir kid who was born the youngest son of the head of the Dawnshield house. That much money for only information was insane… and it would be enough for them to never work in their lives again. Still, none of them saw a kid like that… white hair and green eyes, he clearly looked like a child’s noble with a face like that, of someone who never faced hardships in life.
Selia also studied the posters for a while… that boy, the cursed boy of the rumors was a lot less demonic-looking than the rumors made him out to be. He had some nice and sharp features, and he probably would grow up to become a handsome man, if he had the chance… he was probably kidnapped by someone who hated both the mongrels and the vampires.
Eventually, Selia forgot about that because she hadn’t seen anyone like that… no one had noticed Regulus’ appearance because of his dyed hair, and because the last time they saw him, he was dirty, covered in wounds, and a bit bloody too. That was the only image in their heads they had of him and that would remain like that for quite a while..
… …
I woke up all of a sudden like I had a nightmare that I couldn’t recall. One second later, I heard the sound of the train horn… we were getting closer to the next stop and it was mine too.
I sighed in relief after realizing that nothing had changed since I started my nap. Working during the day made me a lot more tired, even though my parameters increased. It was probably because the other parameters that made my body stronger didn’t grow at all.
‘This is a lot harder than I thought… perhaps I should get some classes that will increase my health, stamina, and physical defense.’
I got up from my seat as the train began to slow down. The scenario was a bit different now… it was a bit cold and cloudier since I was heading north, the opposite direction the whole family should be gathering.
Some mountains could be seen in the distance and their peaks were covered in snow… it was a bit surprising that the weather changed that much with a single hour of travel. However, the mountains were still far away.
‘Well, it is a world of magic, after all… some things can give the middle finger to physics.’
Once the train stopped, I disembarked and soon shivered when the cold wind blew. I had a coat and a hood, but it seemed that my clothes weren't thick enough for the weather. There was no snow around, so it seemed that things wouldn't be that bad.
I couldn't mess up things again, so I decided to look for an inn that offered food as well. I also looked for one that was almost full since I wanted to obtain some information by hearing the conversation of others… I focused too much on myself in the past week and thanks to it, I didn't have much information about anything.
After leaving the train station, I took a good look around the town. It was a bit bigger than Pirla, but not big enough to be called a city. The place was called Kiana town, and it seemed quite a gloomy place… It was still mid-afternoon, but the streets were quite empty.
I didn't know if it was because the adventurers were working here properly or if it was because of another reason. The books that I read that talked about it didn't mention anything odd about the place. In any case, all the buildings were made of stone, so I felt that the inn wouldn't be that cold.
‘Will they receive me while looking like this?’
If I paid upfront for a few days, that wouldn't be a problem. In any case, while I was walking and wondering about the silence of the place, I recalled what the guild lady said… those who stayed behind were the ones who only wanted to laze around. Still, anyone could eventually save enough money to get more classes in other places… unless they had families behind and didn't want to leave them.
While I was thinking about that, I heard the sound of an explosion and the ground shaking a bit. Before long, I saw some smoke rising to the sky in the distance…
