Chapter 2: The System

Knox had eagerly anticipated his birthday for weeks, counting down the days until he turned 16 and gained access to The System. On the day of his birthday, Knox woke up to find his room decorated with balloons and streamers. His parents had prepared his favorite breakfast and presented him with a stack of presents to open.

As the day went on, more family members and friends arrived to celebrate with Knox. The party was held in the backyard, where a long table was set up with colorful decorations and food. Knox's parents had gone all out and prepared his favorite dishes, including barbeque ribs, mac and cheese, and apple pie.

They enjoyed the meal, Knox's loved ones shared stories and memories of their time with him. There were plenty of laughs and jokes, and Knox felt grateful to have such amazing people in his life. After the meal, Knox's younger cousins led everyone to a backyard football game, and the adults sat around chatting and catching up.

As the sun began to set, Knox's parents brought out his birthday cake. It was a homemade chocolate cake with vanilla frosting and 16 candles on it. Everyone gathered around the table and sang "Happy Birthday" as Knox made a wish and blew out the candles.

After the cake, Knox opened his presents. There were clothes, books, and gadgets, but the best gift of all was a letter from his parents, expressing their love and pride in him. As the night drew to a close, Knox felt a sense of excitement and anticipation, knowing that he was now one step closer to gaining access to The System. It had been a wonderful celebration, and Knox felt blessed to have such a supportive and loving family and friends.

The party reminded Knox that his parents might argue with him a lot, but they still cared as much about him as they did for his brother, making him happy. He was born at 11 pm, so supposedly, that was when he should gain access to The System for the first time. Knox felt so excited; he couldn’t believe he would finally be able to use it after waiting so long. The current time was 10:58. The last two minutes felt like an eternity, but when the clock finally hit 11, he felt something connect with him. Knowing it was The System, he tried visualizing the menu as they taught in class, and it worked.

Knox felt relieved that it worked even though he knew it would, and the anticipation caused stress to build up inside him that he didn't realize he had.

He could now become an adventurer, meaning he’ll no longer attend school since adventuring is treated like a full-time job. Knox wanted to immediately go to the guild and sign himself up for a quest, but he knew going now would make him make mistakes because of his tiredness, so he went to bed.

The following day, he woke up at 6 am and went to the guild. The guild is a large building made of stone with a sign hanging above the entrance that reads "Adventurer's Guild." It has a rustic and medieval feel, with wooden beams and torches lining the walls. The interior is spacious and well-lit, with various desks and counters set up for adventurers to check in and receive quests. There are also notice boards displaying available quests and job requests from townspeople. The guild is bustling with activity, with adventurers coming and going, preparing for their quests, and sharing stories of their adventures. Knox's heart raced as he stepped into the guild. This was it; he was finally an adventurer, and the thrill of it all was almost too much to bear. He walked up to the check-in counter and was greeted by a friendly receptionist.

"Good morning, young adventurer. How may I assist you today?" she asked.

Knox couldn't contain his excitement. "I want to sign up for a quest, please!" he exclaimed.

The receptionist smiled. "Of course! Have you had a chance to look at the noticeboard yet? We have a variety of quests available for adventurers of all levels."

Knox shook his head. "No, I haven't. Can you show me where it is?"

"Right this way," she said, leading him to a large notice board at the center of the guild. "Here are all the available quests. As a new adventurer, I recommend starting with something simple, like delivering a package or clearing out a nearby cave."

Knox scanned the board, his eyes widening as he read through the various quests. He finally settled on a quest to retrieve a lost family heirloom from a nearby forest.

"I want to take this one!" he said, pointing to the quest.

"Good choice!" the receptionist said, handing him a slip of paper with the quest's details. "Just have the client sign off once you've completed it, and bring the item back here for your reward."

Knox eagerly took the slip of paper and headed off to prepare for his first quest as an adventurer. He was excited and ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead.
