Chapter 31: Unnatural

At first, a single tone took itself upon the air. It sang, sweaty, but stern, commanding all that could hear it to listen to it. At first, a crowd seated in their chairs, transformed into an audience once raptured by her performance. She was first, but then she would be triumphed by another, louder than the first. Together they stood on stage, alone, surrounded by the darkness of an auditorium, yet well-lit, on display for the audience. Suddenly, the song came together to a moment when the two were required to merge their voices. This was not the voice of a warrior but the voice that was enamored for entertainment. A curtain would be pulled, as the song hit a final bout with the instrumental track. Behind them, was a full set of members, seemingly in a choir.

In the audience, many parents of the choir sat patiently as their children continued singing until finally, the song came to a climax. The bodies of the choir turn to a single person. A young girl. She took the microphone and closed her eyes. She opened them.

Is he there, she thought. She quickly scanned the audience. She looks for his familiar face. His short dark hair, rusty beard, and glasses would usually tell a person to a person that he hadn’t been out of his room for a long time. She didn’t quite admire her father, and as she looked up to the balcony she thought, Where is the Deadbeat?" Although she wasn’t fond of him, there was something peculiar about her relationship with him that she couldn’t help but keep in reverence. Although, he was never home, and always at work.

A vision came to mind of her mother. She was cooking some food. She lowered her knife over some chicken, displacing a piece, creating sections that shed separate one by one. Grande looked upon her mother's face and then she asked a question. “Is father coming?” She then pointed to some table mats. “Here please be a dear and set the table.”

She nodded as she grabbed the mats, and went to set the table. She was pleased to do so, but when she got to the table she saw someone, setting down glasses. “Gladys, over here.” She looked upon her sister Olivia. She did as she said, and each time after she would place a mat, Olivia would place her. Gladys would finally place a fourth and a sorrowful look came upon Olivia’s face. They sat as their mother finally brought food to the table. She went back into the kitchen and came back with something in her hands. Gladys could hear the ignition of a spark, and her mother came back through the door with a cake with candles in her hands. As she placed it down, her mother turned to Gladys, “So what are you going to wish for my dear?”

Gladys looked at the candles, burning bright at their tips, and finally, she looked at her cake.

Happy Birthday, Gladys, it read in cursive writing. She looked at her cake and then at her mother. She could hear the words come out of her mother's mouth, but her mind zoned out. “Make a wish,” her mother would say, but her voice seemed corrupted and malignant. She looked at Olivia, and her face began to become disjointed. “Come on,” it said in a prickling voice. Make a wish.” Gladys screamed. It was then that she thought of her father. And in that moment that memory would bring her to her performance. As she closed her eyes, knowing that her father hadn't come to her debut. She let out the final note of the song she was singing. When she finished there was a strong pause. Finally, the crowd rose and began to applaud. After a minute or two the crowd would stop. The choir turned, heading back into the backroom, and Gladys turned to do the same. As she walked, a single noise was heard. It broke the silence of the Auditorium. She turned. Lo and behold, it was a man, with black short black hair, drizzly glasses, in a white dirty shirt, and jeans that seemed to not be washed. She was disgusted, but that was her dad. Her blood.

You're my blood, she thought.

Gripped in Grande’s hands was Mad's throat. “Destroy me! You can’t. Can’t you?”

“Do it! Do it!” Mad yells. “That's why you're a weak little bitch!” She continued to taunt her as Nero and Law would continue their encounter.

Nero sped towards Law, with his shoulder up extending his elbow to Law in his torso, but as he contacted his body, Law transformed into a snake that slithered onto his body. As it unraveled and its head reached towards Nero's back, its head would transform into the large and hairy arm of a gorilla until finally out of its body a full-sized gorilla would form with the arm of the snake holding onto Nero. Law tensed for a moment and with the momentum threw Nero into the ceiling. He then jumps upwards readying himself to attack, but Nero’s feet land perfectly onto the ceiling, and pushes his weight to propel himself back to Law connecting a blow to his Gorilla-form. The impact sent a vibration through Law’s body and as the vibration rippled towards his back a gust of blue energy burst through his back.

Waterfall Stanchion. 100000 damage. Over his head, he could see a debuff Bane of the Elementals. As the gorilla's body took effect, he noticed something felt off. At that moment he couldn’t move his body. Am I stunned? The thought. The average stun effect prevented movement from a player, but this was a different effect. There wasn't any time to read the effect but as the burst of energy flowed through him, he was then sent to the floor. He felt his body prop up and spat out what felt like blood. And noticed a pain in his arm.

In Nero’s eyes, the game was much different. He looked onto Law. His body was highlighted to Nero based on sections of his body. Each of his major limbs had a health bar on it. Currently, Law’s Arm is at 75% durability. Law didn’t understand but he noticed his arm gained a blue aura. Instead of paying too much mind to it he attempted to get up but noticed his arm was heavier. This must be an effect of the skill. A debuff. Sundering. The words ran through his mind and he understood very well but to defeat a skill like this.

Nero appeared in front of the fallen body. His hands clenched and his hands burrowed with flames. “Scorching Cull!” He yelled. He launched his hands from his hip towards Law, who was able to spin onto his side but felt a tug. I was his arm with Nero’s hand puncturing through. The pain shot through to his mind. He felt like his arm was being burnt, and as he tried to pull away he noticed something off.

My arm. He thought. He jumped back with his arm dangling from his body. I can't feel my arm.

It’s his Paralyses Ability - Necrostutter. The voice entered his mind but wasn’t one of his own. It was Grande. She spoke telepathically to him this time, but also entering his mind was another. “It disables parts of your body through damage. Don’t get hit!”

“You think you can hold me, you little piece of shit!” Mad yelled.

“Quiet!” Grande yelled.

“Dad always said you were his biggest disappointment.”

Grande didn’t want to give Mad the benefit, but a slight grimace on his face told Mad she’d gotten through. “Now that I have your attention. Descent of Nightmares” Her skill would unleash upon Grande, engulfing her face in a black fester of dust. As the cloud enclosed, Grande was losing breath, but she kept her skill firm over Mad’s throat.

Meanwhile, Nero fiercely hunted the disabling Law. He jumped outwards, cutting Law off, and struck with an overhand attack, to which he transformed into a dog, dodging the attack, but still noticing that his arm was numb.

Drats. He thought. In each form the effects take place.

But in the near distance Law could hear a whimper. “Ugh..ugh..” It was coming from Grande. Each gasp, signaled something more serious was going to occur.

Don’t come. I’m okay. Grande said telepathically to Law, but he couldn't help it. He couldn’t see one of his allies die in front of him. He turned and began sprinting towards Grande and Mad when suddenly the shadow of a person appeared blocking him from Grande. It was Nero. Nero channeled multiple energies into his fists and feet until finally, they became dark. He aimed them into Law’s torso and other limbs. At once Law felt his body become fully numb.

Run Law

He bent over, placing his arm over his knee, slouched looking into Nero’s face. “Any last words?”

Run Law

As Law was about to speak, Nero punched his hands through Nero's face, causing his final body part to become numb. As he lay on the floor he could no longer feel himself. It was a feeling he had never experienced. It was as if everything was clear. Is this death? Am I synaspsing? His eyes grew dim as the light slowly became dark in his eyes in his defeat. But it was then that he heard a voice.

“Is the greatest animal human?”

The voice was familiar. At first, he thought it was Grande but it was more revealing. It seemed to know him but yet, was distant.

“No…” Law whispered.

Nero rose to face Grande and Mad. “Give up! You are never going to defeat us! Surrender…” He began to walk towards Grande. She kept he stance although suffocating from Mad’s skill. Grande not only felt the air coming away from her, but she felt a strong pulling at her head and immediately could tell that the skill was going to synapse her. She had to come up with something or else she may be finished. When Nero finally reached her, he sent a strike to her abdomen, beginning the sequence of Necrostutter. Each limb of Grande appeared with a bar designating its durability but only one Nero thought to be important. He charged his fist and struck at her head. As the durability became 0 Grande could no longer feel her head. She was no longer able to control her breathing and was soon to pass out. She began to shake, oscillating. And raised her hand towards Law.

In the near distance, Law's body begins to churn. Bubbles begin to spout as his limbs become inflated and elongated. His arms begin to change shape and size and he begins to grow new limbs.

Something towered over Nero. “Ew! What is this?” He felt a drip of drool coming from above. As he looked down, he could see an ever-growing shadow rise.

The greatest animal…

Isn’t Human.
