Chapter 6

"This would be going faster if you just let me cut it open," Eknar said as he unscrewed a panel attached to the mechanical seal on the door. The device was as large as the door. Thick grey steel made up the majority of the device. Yellow and black warning tape covered its edge. Eknar pulled off the panel, revealing an array of wires. He stuck his hand in and pulled. Electricity sparked, and he screamed. "Damn it."

"Be more careful," Olina rushed over to examine his hand. After looking it over, she let it go, "We still have plenty of time before the lab explodes."

"Cutting the seal open would allow the Hollows to flood the city. Then the Blight plague would be back in full force, and it would be our fault." Sygvar said.

"Yeah, but the base is going to blow up anyway," Eknar returned, messing with the device's wires. "There will be no Hollows left."

"We can't take those chances. Just one of these creatures making it out alive could restart the plague," Draven responded.

The cry of Wargoths' echoed down the hall. The ground began to vibrate more and more faster. Draven turned around to face the only way out. The sewer entrance ended in a corridor with only one entrance. Sygvar joined Draven's side, his sword drawn.

Stage one hollows came first. They hobbled their way towards a group of four. Draven sprang forward. His blade tearing into the group of lab staff turned infected. He slew the hollows in quick succession, cutting off their heads before they could react. Essence cycled around his body, enhancing his mental and physical capability.

Danger from the Weave told Draven to dodge. He did and jumped away to his right. The bony muscular tail of a Wargoth slammed into him and knocked him to the ground. He rolled with the blow and absorbed most of the impact. Draven sprang to his feet just in time to catch the Wargoth charging at him. Essence surged into his arm as he converted it into kinetic force. He held his hand out to the charging Wargoth and released a kinetic blast, sending the beast backward.

Draven accelerated forward, charging after the Wargoth. He stabbed his sword into the Wargoth's chest. The creatures screamed and clawed at Draven. Draven erected a kinetic shield around himself and channeled Essence into his sword. He released a massive blast of kinetic energy from his sword into the Wargoth, blowing an enormous hole in the creature's chest. Blood, muscle, and bone rained down around him. Draven pulled his sword free and backed away. He burned the bits of the creature that landed on him with Fire Essence, destroying any trace of the Blight.

The creature picked itself up and roared at Draven. The hole in the center of its chest was slowly healing. Another Wargoth joined the original, and both stalked towards Draven.

Essence surged into Draven's blade. The Sygaldry on his blade glowed red with Draven's Essence. Red hot plasma erupted on his blade. Draven ran at the two Wargoth. He dodged a claw attack and then swung his sword at the creature's arm, chopping it off. He sympathetically connected the beast to his arm. Draven pulled the creature in. He then cut off the creature's head. He pushed the dead creature's body into the other Wargoth with a telekinetic shove.

"It's open!" Eknar shouted over the sound of battle.

"Good! Go inside. We'll be just behind you!" Sygvar shouted back.

The other Wargoth ripped the dead body of the Wargoth in half. It charged Draven and reached for Draven's throat. Draven deflected its clawed hand and swung his glowing red blade. The sword cut off the hand of the creature. The Wargoth screamed and stuck Draven with its tail. Draven was stunned by the blow. Then the Wargoth wrapped its tail around Draven and then threw him. Draven hit the wall and dented it. He fell from the wall and landed on his knee.

"Self-destruct sequence commencing," The feminine automatic voice played over the speakers. The lab began to rumble. Distant explosions reached Draven's ears.

The Wargoth came at Draven again. Draven Sympatheticly connected his arms to the creature. The momentum of the abomination pushed Draven up against the wall. He screamed as he fought against the beast, cycling more Essence through his body. Draven picked the creature up from the ground and flung the beast into the air. He grabbed his sword and sprinted to where the creature was falling. Draven positioned his sword to where the head of the Wargoth was. The beast fell onto his sword. Kinetic Essence exploded from Draven's blade, blowing up the creature's head.

With the Wargoths taken care of, Draven looked for Sygvar. The bodies of five Wargoths lay near his master. Sygvar continued cutting down the horde of stage one hollows. Their numbers were thinning, but there was still much more.

Draven joined his master's side, helping him thin the herd. "It doesn't seem like the hollows will stop anytime soon. We should go before the base blows up."

Sygvar erected a Kinetic Essence barrier and stopped the hollows from reaching them. Draven and Sygvar sprinted to the exit. Olina and Eknar were waiting for them on the other side. Eknar closed the door behind them and then reactivated the seal.

The first thing Draven noticed about the sewer was the stench. It was dark down here, the only light source coming from Olina's phone and the glow from his and Sygvar's blades. Thankfully, a sidewalk was running along the river of waste that flowed through the tunnel's center, keeping their feet dry.

"We have to go now," Draven started running down the hall. The others followed him. More explosions went off. Each one grew closer to their position. The sewer shook with each one. Dust and pieces of the tunnel began to fall from above.

A loud explosion popped Draven's ear, and the shock away from it blew him and the others off their feet. The tunnel came falling down next. A piece of rubble hit Draven in the head, knocking him out.
