Chapter 20

Draven could have sworn Sygvar told Nero to stay at City Hall. But the President was running over to Sygvar at this very moment. A jet of superhot blue flames erupted from Nero's hand. Slowly, he used it to cut into the stone encasing Sygvar. Draven glanced over to Mydren and Pami; the exosuit guards they had been fighting were fleeing, running in terror at the appearance of the Hollows. Pami and Mydren were engaged in combat with the mystics and the Wargoths. Both of them were on the defense.

Draven focused back on Nero and Sygvar. Sygvar had half his body out of the stone trap and then forced the rest of his body out with enhanced strength. Sygvar drew his sword and, with the speed of a fourth-circle mystic, appeared instantaneously next to Mydren and Pami. He blocked one of the tails of the Wargoth with his sword, and then his blade bit into the side of the creature, taking out a chunk of flesh.

"Be careful, I'm going to start cutting," Nero's voice startled Draven. Breaking Draven's intense concentration on the fight.

"I thought we told you to stay at City Hall."

"If I did that, then you all would have been dead. You should be glad that I'm here saving you. Now be quiet, I need to concentrate," Nero responded with arrogance dripping through his voice. Nero worked fast to free Draven from his stone prison.

Draven dropped to the floor. He searched the ground and found his sword lying on the floor. He picked it up and stood to his feet. Essence surged through his body, and his eyes glowed a dangerous crimson. He sprinted towards the battle his allies were engaged in. He appeared before one of the bone devils and kicked the creature in the back of the leg.

The Wargoth went down with a bestial scream. It turned, swinging its massive claws towards Draven.

Draven erected a kinetic shield, stopping the Wargoth's attack. He then exploded the kinetic shield, sending the Wargoth backward off balance. Not letting the opportunity go to waste, he pushed forward and stabbed the creature in the stomach.

The Wargoth screamed. The Essence inside of his sword burns the inside of the creature alive. The beast snarled at Draven and smacked him.

Draven held onto his sword as he was sent away from the Wargoth, but his blade was pulled free from the beast.

Nero came from Draven's left. He had somehow gotten his hands on a spear and was charging the Wargoth. His eyes were bright with glowing golden Essence. The Essence painted his body and the Sygaldry along his spear with a brilliant light. He stabbed the Wargoth.

The Wargoth shifted to the side, allowing Nero's spear to graze its side. It lashed out with its thick tell towards the old man.

With swiftness beyond his years, Nero dodged the blow. The creature's spear-tipped tail struck the ground and sank deep. Nero stabbed into the tail, spraying blood free from the Wargoth. He then jumped back and joined Draven.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

"Let's work together. The faster we defeat these creatures, the faster we can rescue my family and stop Raylen," Nero said.

Draven nodded as he stared at the Wargoth. The Wargoth's injuries were already partially healed. With a burst of kinetic force, Draven sailed towards the Wargoth. The beast sprinted forward, slamming into Draven. Draven bounced off the creature using a kinetic shield and landed on the ground. He slashed the Wargoth's thigh and then ducked under the swing of its claw.

Nero thrust his spear, piercing the Wargoth's torso. He pulled it out and delivered two more stabs. Nero ducked under the Wargoth's tail. The creature's tail stopped over him, stabbing him through the stomach.

Nero screamed as the creature continued inserting its tail through him and then wrapped its tail around him. Pulling him into the air.

"Fuck," Draven jumped and slashed at the Wargoth's tail. But the creature was faster and more distant than its tail. Draven conjured four force missiles and fired them at the Wargoth. The projectiles hit the beast and exploded on impact. The Wargoth was forced to kneel, with one of its legs being blown off from the attack. Draven sprinted towards the Wargoth, each of his steps releasing a kinetic burst of energy propelling him forward. He charged his sword with Essence and cut off the Wargoth's head. The tail around Nero went limb. Draven cut the tail and freed Nero.

Nero coughed up blood, "Took you long enough."

Draven pulled a healing nanite gel from his belt and injected it into Nero. "I need you to use Body Supremacy to help close the wounds. The nanites alone won't be enough."

Nero closed his eyes and did as he was instructed. The wound around his stomach closed before Draven's eyes, and new flesh and muscle regenerated to cover the hole.

Draven took Nero's hand and pulled him to his feet. Sygvar had defeated the mystics and was currently tying them up. The two Wargoths that Pami and Mydren had been fighting lay dead at their feet.

Draven and Nero joined Sygvar, standing over the two rebel mystics. Pami and Mydren joined them soon after.

"What now?" Mydren asked.

"Now we find my family," Nero responded.

A little fire of anger lit itself within Draven. "We need to stop Raylen first, then rescue your family."

"He's right," Pami said. Raylen could have hundreds of thousands of Wargoths. We must stop him before he sets them loose on the city."

"And if we don't rescue my family first, then they might be as good as dead. Then you won't get your reforms."

"You wouldn't dare! You swore an Oath on the Weave! You would die!" Mydren shouted.

Nero scowled, "So what! I would rather die than live without my family another day. They are my everything; I would have nothing to live for without them." Tears started streaming down Nero's face.

"Fine, how about we just split up?" Draven proposed. That way, we can do both at the same time, and everyone will be happy."

"That's not happening," Sygvar said. "If we split up, neither objective will be accomplished. We all need to work together."

"Well, this madman needs to start reasoning. We need to think about the city and all the people that live in it, not just one person's family," Draven said.

"Oh, shut up! Stop pretending that your actions are morally just. You just want a chance to kill Raylen for what he did to your family! You just like me!." Nero respond.

"That may be, but at least my goals align with saving the most people possible."

Pami cleared her throat, and everyone focused on her, "I think we should rescue Nero's family first. He's not going to listen to reason. He will go after Raylen first; he's going to go after his family and then get himself killed. We need reforms so the common people can improve their societal standing."

"If my sister thinks it's a good idea to follow the president, then I'll go along with her," Mydren added.

Draven looked towards his master. Sygvar shrugged, "Don't look at me to side with you. We were ordered to follow the directives of the President."

Draven growled, "Then I guess we're going after his family."
