Chapter 45 - Peculiar Plans

Chapter 45 - Peculiar Plans

She did in fact get him, as Philips lay unconscious on the ground. Leo was quick to follow his example, as his body collapsed. The frost wracked him with pain, as he tried his best to fight any involuntary pained movements. He could flatten this building with just one errant twitch. Marem rushed over to Leo, her staff held close.

His body screamed in pain, but the actual damage was minimal. This would have been good news, if Marem had the proper training for this situation. She was trained on how to patch together wounds, but not how to soothe them. She tried her best, as she smashed shards of ice off him and tended to him.

Despite her inexperience in this form of magic, she didn't find it difficult to adapt towards it. She patched up the surface level damage, and eased his pain to the best of her abilities. Leo was able to keep himself steady once some of the pain had subsided. He still felt the grips of frost on his body, but they had loosened.

Once Leo was stable, at least stable enough to sit up, Marem rushed over to philips. She took off his bandages, which revealed his grisly injuries. His neatly sewn stitches had torn, as his rended flesh oozed blood. Her eyes shined a brilliant pink as she tried her best to keep him from bleeding out.

By the time Leo had recovered from the worst pains of the attack, Marem had made solid progress on Philips' condition. His wounds were mostly closed, and he looked further from death than before. He had suffered from heavy blood loss, but she focused her magic onto his heart. Leo saw Philips’ skin quickly regain color, as his body seemed to replenish its missing blood. It didn’t take much longer for him to be in a stable condition, his wounds somewhat patched up.

“Is he okay?” asked Leo.

“Definitely not okay, but in a better state compared to when he was in the ice room,” she sighed a breath of relief.

“So, did you just smack his head in? Was that some magical technique or something medicinal?” he prodded.

“Nope, that was not a good idea at all. He was shooting at you and I panicked, and my staff seemed to be a good enough club,” she explained as she focused on his head.

“What if he has a concussion?” Leo asked.

“Then it’ll be worse for his condition, but it's better for him to suffer something I can fix than for us to get killed,” she offhandedly explained.

Leo felt worried about Philips’ condition, but had to admit that she had a point. After a few minutes passed, her eyes powered down as she stepped back from Philips.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

She looked at Leo, “Would you be able to bring him back to his bed? It’ll be much easier if I could continue his treatment there, especially with all my tools being there.”

Leo gently picked him up, but Philips was slick with blood. He tried his best to hold him steady as they walked back to their encampment, where Mark lay soundly asleep despite the commotion. Leo placed Philips down somewhat ungently on his bed, which prompted a slight whack on the head from Marem.

He saw her take Philips’ wand, as she placed it inside the desks drawer. With his wand secured, she seemed to be more at ease as she began to work on him. His injuries were manageable, but definitely set back by his recent outing.

“So, while I go over his wounds and stitch him up, mind telling me what exactly was that?” she asked Leo.

Leo stuttered for a moment, “Uh, can you be more specific? There was a lot that happened.”

“Alright, why did he attack us?” she asked.

“He’s infected, and I know I didn’t say that infected would attack but I had no clue until now. Turns out the spike devil was infected and that maybe made it fight, and it seemed as if the same thing happened to Philips,” explained Leo.

“How do you know the spike devil was infected?”

“It's a bit tougher to answer that, but I can see basic information about things I defeat. I can’t prove it to you, it’s just something I can do.”

“Makes sense,” Marem flatly stated

“What?”

“What?”

“Didn’t think that would just make sense.”

“Leo, I watched you send three boats through the air with a punch that you didn't make contact with. You are certainly not a standard person, so there is no reason for me to believe you wouldn't have other powerful abilities.”

“That is a fair point.”

“Do you have an idea on what we should do?”

“Well, we could be the only people who know about the state that Faelde city is in. We have a responsibility to help them out,” Leo claimed.

“Do you have a clue on how to help the city?” asked Marem.

“Honestly, no. This entire adventure has been a bit of a shot in the dark, do you have any ideas?”

“Well the people all go somewhere after they’re infected, so it stands to reason that where they go would have something to do with the infection.”

“How do we find where they go?”

Marem looked at Philips, “We follow an infected person.”

The two looked at the unconscious Philips, as they both contemplated the idea. Marem finished up his care shortly after, as finished his new set of bandages.

“What if he attacks us again, or what if he gets hurt?” asked Leo.

“He didn't throw a single punch in the fight, he may only fight if he can cast magic. Obviously no guarantee of this, but without his wand it should be safe. It also won't take long to get him to a better condition,” she argued.

“I don't like the idea, but it's the only way we have of helping Faelde city” accepted Leo.
