Chapter 24: Possession
Inside a shitty library located in the Dwarven city of Fallohar.
“Get up, one punch.” Adi was pushing me to make my next move but the tone of his voice wasn't that convincing. 'Like if you're telling me to punch a vicious, voracious living breathing "Monster" apply some pressure, like come on he could encourage me better than that. Besides, there's no way one punch would stop that thing.' Acting while my attacker was knocked out I lowered my head to look at the room covered in ice and debris.
“Did I?” There was no way, I could believe what was right in front of my eyes. Eyes that I'd kept closed this entire time. A bad habit of keeping my eyes closed when I didn't want to believe that something, anything, "this" was real.
So I turned my neck to my left to check on the injured Wolfman just to make sure that he was alive. Last I saw he was freezing to death, and the observation held seeing a faint layer of blue spreading across him. What was beyond that new layer of blue past his dark blue fur 'We have ourselves a heartbeat!'
I opened my eyes propping myself up with my hands.
I looked up towards the man who'd started the fight planted in the back of the room. More shades of blue wrapping around his veins and organs, 'it gave me chills' Wait did I say that already? The only color that didn’t look like it was turning blue as quickly as the rest of his body was his heart and brain, but they were also leaning toward a bluish-purple.
His insides looked gross, the way everything was scattered about, misplaced. Would Clivent end up like that?
"Focus," Fine, I'll focus.
'How did I scream that loud?' It was the only thing on my mind besides tending to Clivent, who had also landed on a wooden bookshelf. It was a mistake on my part, the whole scenario was unexpected. I should be happy that Clivent didn’t completely freeze over after taking a hit from that thing. Poor timing had called forth skill descriptions that I wasn’t all too sure I had asked for.
[Voice of an Angel] ~ The user has been taught by the great seducer in the ways of the voice. The skill can be used to extend one’s voice to the farthest reaches but only if the user wills it so. It can convey the strongest emotions through voice and song. Has the potential for much more.

*Ping!* you have acquired experience!
"What!?" What the heck are those notifications about?
“Adena, pay attention. “ Adi pulled me away from the system descriptions that had caught me off guard. And from the sound of his voice, he finally woke up.
‘It was about time!’ That's what I would’ve said if I was sure that he would help me, either way, Adi wouldn’t. Even if the childlike voice inside of my head no longer sounded groggy, he had already made up his mind.
Standing over Clivent’s body I could see where he had been pierced. [Eyes of the Watcher] had its perks x-ray vision one of them, I could see way more than just bones and cartilage.
It wasn’t an apt decision to call it x-ray vision staring at a bunch of minuscule circles depicting life itself but it would have to do.
The Wolfman was doing well considering how slowly his heart beat. "He's not dead, he's not dead." Rambling on, I didn't exactly want to touch him and make things worse. The system had pulled away my attention for just a couple of seconds overlapping with my eyes which in turn would’ve cost Clivent his life if Adonin hadn’t spoken up.
'What could I do?' I had zoned out. This wolfman was going to die eventually. There was nothing I could do if I was being honest with myself.
“Pathetic, you're such an idiot Adena I’m not even sorry. Are you even trying to save him?” Adi was speaking out of turn like he always did.
He was a liar and no help!
“I'm not a liar, all I do is help you. Right now I'm helping you the most by not helping you at all. Ignorance isn’t as blissful as you may think. Speaking of "Ignorance" stop ignoring the System and defend yourself before it's too late.” He had to be mocking me, there was no way that he was being serious right now.
"I've been reading the system descriptions as they pop up so how could I be ignoring it!?" Here I am talking to Adi when 'Frozen' is over there splayed out across those bookshelves.
"That guy could stand up at any minute and here I am arguing! Arguing with you!" What's his problem?! I'm trying my best here.
“It's one thing to lie to me, and another to lie to yourself. I know you remember calling for the Status menu. Get over yourself, get over it, it's nothing but a screen. ” My hands were shaking over Clivent's torso I couldn't decide whether to be riddled with fear or displaced by anger.
'How was Clivent still alive? I needed to get my priorities straight.' Considering, the vault door and making a run for it. I glazed over the even thinker specks "Matter" of blue, that would be such a pain to undo.
Then it hit me, the word "Pain," why can't I catch a break? All this struggling and for what, why was this world out to get me?! I couldn't scowl any harder thinking about it.
"Halfway there, how about I give you a nudge." What was he talking about? And there it was.
A hot serving of repressed memories. “The pain,” the memory came back with a vengeance turning my arms to jello.
"The pain" of getting ripped apart into a tapestry. The chaos of it all. How did I bear getting pulled apart like some sort of space chicken? At least a black hole would've spared me some suffering. ‘Probably nothing compared to what was done to me.’
“There we go, keep going, you can do it.” Adi teased. Could he be serious for one second!?
“I don't want to.” Am I a coward for not wanting to remember? What's the worst that could happen? My eyes were scraped out and burned over and I lost a few nails. Fine, I'm a coward. What were the words?
The skill [Memorist] is a curse. Why couldn't the skill erase the memory instead?
"Huh, A blessing in disguise, you don't have to make up a story, you can remember perfectly what happened, as it happened, " He had one way of looking at it. "Also I want to say that you are exaggerating since I took the brunt of it."
"That's not true!" He could never understand what I had gone through!
"Both wrong, yet so right. So how about we just accept the things we cannot change and change the things we cannot accept." What the hell is wrong with this kid? I was done talking to him.
"Fine, let's get this over with, one punch." There was that feeling again, my anger couldn't take root. And that left me with no choice but to move on and change the subject
"What were the words?” I knew the words.
“There you go little Eden think of them with Intent.” some Brother he is. I came to a crossroads, tasting the words before reliving the torture. ‘Let’s just get it over with.’
“Status Menu open!” The memories of being smothered by a dungeon would have to be pushed aside. I'd wasted enough time talking to Adi, time someone else used to recover.

“Now little Eden was saying three words such a hard thing to do.” Adi was laughing at my situation.
It was humiliating but I was happy to be wrong. I laughed, The situation was hilarious.
Clivent had said, “Humans had less than thirty stats across the board,” In his words. Though he hadn’t referred to someone my age specifically the fear of bringing up the system status menu had blinded me.
“One hundred and eighty”, that’s how many base stats I had spread out across the board. I didn’t feel any different from when I woke up at Clivent's house. My mind is a bit clearer, and it hasn’t played any tricks on me like it used to back on Earth. That's the only change I've noticed. The only changes that I could pinpoint.
The skills description seemed unbelievable and because of that, I was at a loss for words. ’Maybe, I could take this guy on.’ Was it that hard to land a single punch?
“Adena, you need to hurry it up the block of ice over there is waking up. I can't keep him down for long.” Adi was getting straight to business, but I wouldn't let it slide. Adi had been playing with me all along. He had to know about my shit ton of stat points.
I could find the time to be mad later.
“Fine, have it your way, I've done my part, one punch is all it should take.” As soon as he said that a cold gust came from the broken bookshelf covering the man.
“HumanEhs DO WHAT your kind DOES best and Die for me!” It was like two people were speaking at once. His words had caused an outburst, blowing around wooden debris and gray mist once again. As if the wrecked library wasn’t covered in enough wood, and snow, Blue matter in the form of ice was caking the floor once again.
[Eyes of the Watcher] showed me what lay beyond the blue mist. What lies under the man’s black cloak?
The man had one human eye the other looked reptilian and ice-textured. His upper layer of skin had been blown off along with his black cloak.
His skin was frostbitten, and the upper half of his torso looked cold blue, and hard. From the man's orifices, a mist of gray and blue seeped out.
"Is this guy a monster? Whatever it was, it wanted to kill me.
“Stop using [Mind over matter] to keep up the charade." What was he talking about?
"You're changing, and that's okay Papa and Father won't mind.” Adi was lecturing me. I hated when he read my mind like he knew everything about me.
More than I knew about myself.
“He’s coming,” he warned but I could already see the man's movements just fine. And I'm pretty sure that Adi knew that.
Since Matter always moved first. I’d have to react before the colors around me could change.
[Identifying]... [Qualapalic] On identifying the monster jagged teeth ripped out of its human mouth pushing aside the human teeth, a human without some drop of blood wasn’t a human at all. The Thing approached quickly through the mist.
What would I do when it got to me? Who would save Clivent!?
‘Analyze the situation, pay attention to my surroundings, act accordingly.’ Father wasted no time knocking me down during training. Neither did Papa. Every failed attempt at defending myself would result in me repeating the line.
The Qualapalic was leaps and bounds faster than me and there was no chance of me keeping up with it.
My vision using [Eyes of the Watcher] had expanded to a three hundred and sixty-degree view. I could see almost everything going on in the Adventurers Hall. How the people gambled, drank beer, laughed, and brooded. A couple somewhat unaware of what was happening right below their very feet. Some look the other way instead of following the group trying- trying in the least. A couple of adventures were even trying to get into this room, it was too bad the already thick vault door had frozen over.
I guess this thing whatever it was had always planned on killing me and Clivent. From the moment the library vault slid open, the second Odesta sat us down.
A sense of calm. It washed over me as soon as I stopped fearing this Beast-kin or whatever he was. The 2nd tier of [Fear Resistance] was something to experience.
Even now, being encircled by this guy felt like a breeze. Chilly, ‘It was just near death what was so bad about it?’ I sound crazy.
Such a useful skill, [Eyes of the Watcher]. There was no way I was dying here. I don't think Adi would allow it.
I was panicking a minute ago when my life had always been assured. ‘Ha, if those three could see me now.’
Even in this or the next. Whatever the case may be I still don’t think Adi was going to help me. He was already tending to Clivent more than he did me from the looks of it.
“This was my fault. I let it come to this.” I stated.
“Yes, yes, it is,” Adi agreed. Was he giving me a break, it felt like it mentally speaking.
Black pits opened up around the room. Black specks. No, Dark matter was leaking into the library from somewhere. Out of Nowhere.
Since the scaled brute’s first ice attack. I'd noticed Dark Matter leaking from corners and crevices of the room. Matter so unnoticeable that it went unnoticed.
To say I noticed it when I couldn’t have noticed it is a huge contradiction. I had paid the library little mind, absorbed in those pathetic excuses for books and conversation.
If I didn't know any better, I'd say Adi planned this from the beginning but there was no way he could have planned this.
Although I was out of my league I didn’t feel like it. It all felt unreal, the fact that I was here standing in this library.
A black string of matter was attached to the monster's brain; it was all under Adi’s control at the moment. Clivent had also made a complete recovery while being unconscious.
Another dark string of matter sticking out of the side of his neck had put him in the same mind state as the Monster.
Sooner or later Adi would let the Qualapalic have a go at me.
The monster at the moment looked like it would run in circles forever but deep down I felt like Adi wouldn’t let the situation go to waste.
We had the same parents after all. What could I do? I knew that the Qualapalic was coming for my head a gray beacon of light was directed right above my neck.
White Matter had been smudged across the Watcher’s canvas and if I didn't duck in time the last thing I'd probably see is red before my head hit the ground.
I'll have to crouch down to dodge him but what would I do next? The grey beacon of matter could change in an instant once he got close to me.
“Round one, Fight” Adi was playing a game and I couldn't even be scared for my life. I had no time to be scared.
The monster moved at a speed that caused another gust of cold air to leave an indentation in the ice-covered wall.
The library had become an ice lounge.
As soon as Adi spoke, I had already ducked down gathering strength in my knees.
*Bing* You have gained the skill [Ice Magic Resistance]!
Judging from my title [Luck of lass] skill I had a 25% percent chance of ducking at just the right moment. I dropped my right fist down to the side for one swift motion balding it up as if my life depended on it.
Taking a breath, I threw an uppercut in a sudden motion as quickly as possible.
The [Qualapalic] was nothing but a gray, and blue blur with talons long enough to slit my throat or worse knock off my head.
I didn’t think it would be enough to knock it out, so I had to worry about reacting to whatever came next.
On impact, a sound like no other came about. My hand felt normal I couldn’t have broken my hand. Had I broken my hand!?
I couldn’t help but grit my teeth as my scowl didn’t hold up.
when my fist connected with the [Qualapalic] all that was heard was a shout and the sound of bones breaking.
“SHRAAAAAHHHH!!!” The Qualapalic flew towards the ceiling. I had crushed its neck; its spine had disconnected from its head. Bone was jutting out along with green blood.
Smashing into the stone ceiling headfirst the monster stopped moving. The ceiling had cracked from the impact.
I was left speechless probably for the fifth time today. There was no way twenty measly stats points in strength could kill whatever that was!?
The monster fell from the ceiling after three seconds of squirming and twitching up above, falling onto the remains of another broken and shattered bookshelf.
Shocked, I looked at my left hand. To see if there was a difference with the right.
The matter in my hands was more compressed. Using [Eyes of the Watcher] I could see how my hand composition had slowed, different shades had been replaced with browns encased in blacks.
“Woah,” I muttered. I didn’t know you could layer matter on top of each other. That’s what it looked like but I’m sure that wasn’t the case.
Watching Clivent through [Eyes of the Watcher], he seemed as good as new, dark matter exiting his body leaving little to no traces.
I knew that Dark Matter wasn't supposed to be there or move as fast as this stuff did. Even when everything about this world was unnatural this was bonkers. ’Ewww, I said the word Bonkers.’ Adi must've been behind this.
Opening my hand to check and see if something was wrong with it, I sighed in relief. My hand was reverting to its normal composition.
Observing my surroundings, the vault was still frozen solid, and the mist was getting thicker it was becoming a bit harder to see. As the blue matter was being clumped together at an insane rate.
“You don’t even have a Classsss Human girl.” The monster was talking while lying on the ground its neck bone was still broken and sticking out, skin hanging loosely around the sharp bone.
“WHERE IS SHEEEee!!!!” Gray matter blew around the library fiercely from the monster's fallen body, his eyes were becoming red and green, with white wisps flowing out of his eye sockets.
“This thing is insane! Can we please switch now!? I asked no longer keeping my thoughts to myself. The hissing made me want to cut off my ears.
“No, you can still take him. If you look closely or pay attention, you’ll see that his body is becoming thinner the more mist fills the room.
The green wisps are probably his life force or something bizarre like that. Good luck Adena.” There was no talking to him he just wanted to egg me on.
*Ping!* [Cold resistance] has leveled up!
He was right of course about the monster's thinning body but the [Qualapalic] was doing something to make my skill [Eyes of the Watcher] useless. The thick blue fog it was emitting worked to hide its figure.
“Crick!” a weird noise came from the monsters' direction. The sound of bones breaking. The room was filled with snow in no time. I was tired of the impossible being possible.
I wanted to be in Clivent's shoes right now. Adi had used dark matter to encase Clivent in stone or something, a weird mixture of dark matter and brown. 'Did Adi worry about Clivent more than me!?'
“No, you just want me to do everything for you, there's a difference. I'm the reason Clivent didn't get back up after he tried healing himself, I’ll admit to that.” It's like I could see his little smug body folding his arms together talking in the Nothing. That’s what I imagined.
Another sound came about; it was like paper had been shredded. Something told me it was most likely skin.
The snow had stopped, and the silence felt deadly. The room was covered in about four feet of snow. Looking at the snow the blue matter started to thin and separate. I didn’t have my eyes on the bigger picture and that cost me dearly.
Walls of ice behind the mist had been erected, melting, liquefying into more water flooding the room. Zooming in on the monster's body using [Eyes of the Watcher]. I could tell that I was out of my league. Water crawled up my legs. A drip, to pints, liters, gallons, and before I knew it, I was covered head to toe. The room was being flooded and snow had changed from solid to liquid in under a minute.
I could swim but I was pretty sure I wasn't going to beat an Ice or water monster at his own game. Who was I kidding? I was just winging it, to begin with, I was lucky that my head was still above water.
With no choice, I breathed in with my mouth taking as much of the matter in the room as my lungs could hold. My lungs were surprisingly taking in a lot of the dirty water in the room.
It was more than you would imagine. All of the air in the room turns out. Adi was acting ten steps ahead of me, inside the somewhat murky water. Clivent was safe in sound in a stone chrysalis-looking coffin. I couldn’t see whatever was going on inside, it was too dark.
Things were happening so fast. The bright side was that the [Qualapalic] wasn’t attacking me; even though it had every chance.
It was no longer wearing human skin. I'd panic if I could feel fear.
A ten-foot-tall monster. Even Clivent couldn't measure up. Its eyes were both cold icy slits.
Floating where the corpse had previously been flung was a literal skin suit with organs floating about. How did that monster even fit inside such a small skin?
The monster was smiling as it swam closer. I hadn't noticed until it was too late.
I was chained in ice by my neck, arms, and legs with no choice but to hold my breath for however long that would be.
“Ihhse loathe the human flesh. I love tastes better than salt of the sea, thicker, smooth, and savor. I'll eat you." It licked its lips with its gross tongue. Sliding it across its nasty green pinkish purple gills.
Closing the distance it swam closer and closer like it was no sweat at all. The fins on its neck and arms told me it was no trouble, nasty large spikes that looked like gigantic teeth were trailing across its five fins.
“Drown Human girls” he spoke.
I hate [Taker of Tongue]. How can I even hear underwater?
The huge monster was two feet away from my ice-chained body. My hair was floating upwards adding a couple feet to me overall, but I was still being dwarfed.
“Ewwww!” he was getting his tongue ready to lick me. “NO WAY! Ew Ew EW EW!”
“I love the taste of children” it spoke inching its tongue toward me. I wasn't going to hold my breath while he had his way with me. 'Hell no, I'd rather die!'
“Kill YOURSELF!!!” I screamed for my life wanting to curse the nasty bastard.
Stopping in its tracks the Monster stopped moving. While I was trying my best to keep conscious.

Drenched in teeth-chattering water, Adi removed Ice from my hands and wrists. The water turned to Ice, Ice that had been transformed into shackles. Shackles become chains, If this is what people choose to do with magic- Why? A rhetorical question, why did it have to be me? It's always me. I'm so tired. May have had something to do with the almost drowning.
Not a single notification, useless system. Adi would take care of it. I could see the black specks drifting out of my eyes at work as the circular marks on my wrists miraculously disappeared, as the wet hair covering my eyes lost its recently added layer of ocean blue.
“Woah,” I could hear him, and then I couldn't. Adi's call felt like it'd been cut short.
I started shaking as the realization set in. [Frost resistance] wouldn’t help me shake off the guilt coursing through my veins. I hated how the system emphasized every thought relating to a skill. As if the notification weren't enough. I hate it here, and I know that I shouldn't say it because that'll only make things worse.
"I hate it" I couldn't manage to finish chattering the words out.
A bomb had gone off in what once was a normal and rather restricted library. A soundwave had been sent off into the unsuspecting Mountain of Fallohum. Something that came from me had- I just wanted him to die. Hadn't I suffered enough? [Voice of an Angel] had caused my teeth to shoot out of my mouth and my lips had split. My vocal cords were mangled, and I finally understood the “Beware!” part in the system description.
I killed people. It hit me like a truck the notifications, the specks, the water pressure had blown the frozen vault door right off its hinges. An exit crammed with adventurers. Water, blood, and guts cut through the vault door like a kitchen knife through paper hitting seven people. Someone wearing a pointy hat had quite the fall.
He died, I don't think magic could fix a broken neck.
I'd never seen that before, someone die. I'd never killed someone. All that effort to pry the door open. If only they knew what was coming.
Water and wind resistance were aiding the Adventures in survival, Under Gatarn thee Admissible it was mandatory to have some resistance to the elements. Unfortunately, there was no resisting an attack you couldn't see coming, not for these Adventurers.

“MURDERER!!!”
“BITCH!!!”
“BASTARD!!!”
“YOU KILLED US YOU MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
A chant hollowed me as if I were locked in some cult cathedral. I needed to repent to be forgiven. I'd give it all if only they would hear my pleading.
"I need it to stop! I'm sorry, I didn’t mean to! I'm a good girl! Please forgive me! I’M SORRY!!! Please!” I kept screaming at the voices. Enraged, traumatized, this is my fault I know that it's my fault. I'm guilty.
My legs were glued to the floor as the ghosts voiced their anger, but why wouldn't they hear me out? It was an accident!!
This was my fault. It was all my fault. The thousands I could see flooding the library didn’t care. I was to blame. I killed them. I deserve this, “I'm sorry” I voiced again and again. They ignored me and they were right. I'm a murderer.
“MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER, MURDERER!!!"
Immobilized and open to the voices. But they went on chanting bloody murder, and I couldn't blame them. They were right.
