Book 2 - Chapter 4

James

Entering the new room the first thing I noticed was the incredible size. From front to back it had to have been at least a 100 meters, deep and wide. All around the room were what looked to be 5...Mounds...Hills? They were to short to be hills but to tall to really be much else. These hills formed a line straight across the room like a wall that was easily passable. The room was entirely white against the walls and actually faded into color becoming more real as the hill's rose, like a water color painting coming to life. The gaps between allowed me to see the true goal for the room. Just beyond the hill, small and barely visible was the door, and the egg behind a window of glass, that has appeared in each room so far.

Taking my eyes away from the goal I looked to see what was awaiting us atop of these hills. My eyes widened when I saw what was there. Upon these hills were 5, large lions standing upon there mounds with different color manes crowning there heads, Brown, White, Purple, Yellow, black. Each was standing tall staring down at us waiting, following all of our movements. A challenge sat there in that gaze as these creatures watched, waiting for us to meet the challenge.

I was in awe of the giant lions above. "Are you guys seeing what I'm seeing?" I asked.

"Depends, are they big ass lions?" Bay said with flat voice

"Yes." I was annoyed how could they look at those creatures and not be awed by them.

"Then yes. Why are they different colors." Bay asked Curiously.

"Probably not something good." Violet offhandedly commented.

"You guys want to fight them?" Bay asked.

Everyone shook their heads no.

"So...Sneak around?" Without turning her head, Bay pointed at the biggest gap that was along the sides of the wall. "Does it count as sneaking if they stare us down the whole time?"

"It does as long as they don't attack." Rowan replied.

"Good enough for me. Everyone, slowly make your way around them. Don't run. It may set off there predator instincts." Because just looking at them I felt like prey.

We slowly made our way around the hills. The entire time the lions never took their eyes off us. It was very unsettling for them to track us like that. When they saw us passing around the hill, I heard *Chuff*. I turned my head to the one who made the sound, staring down the white maned lion. Something about that sound was filled with such disdain, I could almost hear the word 'Coward'. It took all of my self control not to challenge it to a duel then and there.

Controlling myself, I looked back to my team who were looking at me worriedly.

I whispered to them. "I'm not that bad."

No one spoke they all just rolled there eyes and moved closer to the door and egg.

The closer I got to the egg the more I could see the area around the door and 5 different key wholes the same color's as the lions on the door in a start pattern. With my little episode, Violet had taken the lead reaching the egg first. Her face went from neutral, to confused, to annoyed, then thoughtful. I can't tell if that means I should worry or not. I didn't have to think long before I was close enough to read the objective.

Obtain the keys by proving your worth to the guardians.

Open the door by using the keys before time runs out.

"Well, shit." Rowan commented after reading the egg.

"We have to fight then." Violet said tiredly

Rowan looked thoughtful "Not necessarily."

"???"

"Well, it says prove your worth, not fight."

"How else do you prove your worth to a lion." I asked, genuinely curious.

"Bring them food?" Rowan said questioningly.

After a brief pause Violet commented. "That...that actually might work, but none of us have anything except the clothes on our back. So unless you are suggesting we sacrifice each other to the lions then I think we will have to fight."

Rowan looked abash at his idea being shot down. In a much smaller voice "I was just pointing out, there are other ways to prove our worth."

"Do you think we have to kill them? Or just survive?" I asked

"Probably, either. I mean it is nearly impossible to kill them barehanded, even with our skills." Bay answered.

"Great, we are going to have to fight giant lions barehanded. How could this possibly get worse?" Violet asked throwing her hands up.

"Seriously?" I responded.

Violet offhandedly commented. "Yeah, Yeah I knew as soon as I said it, but it's already been said."

"So. Does anyone have a plan?" I asked.

Everyone went silent. What if... "We could sneak up on them."

I knew it was a bad idea as soon as I said it only to be confirmed by Violet. "How? They can see all angles?"

"I mean if we all go up on hill at once..." Rowan trailed off unsure.

"That's assuming the others won't jump into the fight." I Added

"I don't think they will." Bay was looking thoughtfully up at the guardian's.

"Why's that?" I asked curious as to why they wouldn't fight.

"If they are guardians, then they shouldn't attack until we approach whatever they're guarding." Bay Answered

"Which is most likely the keys." Rowan continued.

"Could we distract them and just take the key?" Violet asked

Bay was looking up at the lions squinting. "That would be a good Idea. Except for one thing."

"Whats that?" I asked.

Bay pointed to the purple lion in the center. "The keys are hanging around their necks."

"UUUGGGGHHHHHH" I let out an annoyed groan. Seeing the look on everyone else's face I could see they agreed.

"We fight then?" I asked.

"We fight." Bay confirmed

I started to plan out loud. "If you get the chance grab the key and run."

"But they would just chase us." Rowan commented

"They might not." I replied

"What evidence are you basing this on?" Violet asked

"A theory." It really was just a theory. Their would be no way for us to fight all of them at once so it must be a way to win.

Violet was irate at my answer."A theory? So our options are we either kill it, steal it, or hope that we only have to survive for predetermined amount of time. Am I correct in this assessment?"

"That sounds about right." I said, ignoring her yelling.

"With the hope that if we steal it they won't maul us after running away?" Violet continued.

"Yes."

"Also with the hope that if we can just survive long enough they will give us the key, going on no evidence whatsoever?" I could tell was frustrated at the situation not me.

"Yes, do any of you have a better plan?" I asked.

No one said a word, with looks of consternation and frustration on there face. One by one I could see each of them slowly comes to grips with what needed to be done.

The silence was broken by Violet. "Fuck" it! Everyone get yourself ready for a fight. Which one first?"

"The black is the closest." Bay Commented

"The White one called us cowards as we walked by." I added, trying to make that our first target.

"It chuffed. It didn't call us cowards." Rowan said matter of fact.

"I swear thats what it sounded like." I argued.

"We'll get to that one later. We'll deal with this one first." Bay said pointing up at the black lion, as it watched us argue.

I tried to stare Bay down attempting to telepathically change her mind, but...something about the way she starred me down always unsettled me. I broke first. "...Fine." Everyone group up, and prepare yourselves.

"This is stupid. Why can't we surround it again?" Violet was frustrated.

"That's not honorable." I answered. What is the point of a fight that has no honor. Besides I'll need the boost from my word.

"Neither is 4 on one but its happening." Violet sneered

"He has plenty of opportunity to drop the key. If he does not it is his choice."

"It's not much of a choice." Bay said quietly.

"It's still a choice, and there is honor in his choice. As a matter of Honor we challenge you to a fight." I let loose the first of my challenge in that sentence preparing.

"Stretching it a bit thin aren't we?" Bay asked.

I kept my mouth shut. By speaking the word as I did, the lion was now alerted to the upcoming fight I could see the look in his eyes when I spoke. How they narrowed and his body began to tense. It is an honor to fight such an opponent. So I must give him the choice, and he has. With the black maned lions choice made I felt my body strength, and become more flexible. A fight with Honor brings out the best in me.

The closer we got the larger the lion appeared. Until we were just a short 20 feet away. The lions stood at least 6 feet high, with a tired but ready look. When we got closer to the lion I could see his mane wasn't pure black but would sparkle slightly as it moved. Like the night sky. With one more step forward the fight began, with the lion exploding into a cloud of shadows and starlight.

"What the...?" That was the only words I was able to release before it leapt at me. I jumped as hard as I could away, just barely dodging out of it's claws. Although it was near impossible to tell in the cloud it was shrouded with.

"Careful the things shroud makes it impossible to see it's strikes."

"No Shit! Those claws look awfully Blunt don't they?" Violet spoke pointing toward the cloud.

"I can't get bead on it...STOP MOVING!!!" Bay shouted

With Bay's shout the lion came into sharp focus all the sharp edges blunted smooth. Unmoving but you could see it straining against his bonds. "Hurry your ass up. I can't channel this much mana for to long."

"Surprise!" Rowan appeared out of no where striking the guardian across its body, then disappearing and reappearing in multiple places each time speaking Surprise. He was only able to do this 3 times before falling to his knees exhausted. 'Must be a power intense move.'

"James Move!" Bay yelled at me.

"One Moment." In that moment I had all the time in the world. I could see the entirety of the fight as though in slow motion seeing every move and what to do next. I snapped out of my inaction the moment over moving forward. "Rain blows." I moved my fists to punch the lion in its chest, each strike moving faster and faster sounding like the patter patter of rain.

Everything happened in only a few seconds, but that was long enough to do some damage. Bay stumbled and the lion jumped back bursting again into a cloud of shadows and starlight. Thats when the cloud counter attacked, moving faster then I would have thought possible it circled our party taking a small chunk of flesh from everyone. Before stopping back atop the hill letting out a small chuffing noise of disdain. Everyone stopped moving.

Violet looked up disbelieving. "It's looking down on us."

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"Fuck this guy!" Bay yelled

"Burn, Surrounded in flames, Constant and Consuming, Spark!" Bay chanted. A large fireball shot toward the guardian. Right before it struck it swiped its claw at the flame causing it to dissipate. "Shit." Bay jump out of the way as the lion lunged for her. She wasn't fast enough taking a chunk of flesh out of her back.

I found my core of energy and kicked it into action as fast as I could. Increasing my strength and speed beyond normal human limits. This had an added benefit of creating a small energy field around my skin to absorb damage. I lunged forward, trying to draw its attention. I was lucky as my fist connect with the lion enough to knock it back rolling away and back on its feet.

'Note to self power up first then rain fists down.'

They lion roared at me and lunged toward Violet who had rushed to heal Bay. "Look out!" Violet's eyes widened as she looked up to see the lion right about to strike when it froze.

*Clink* The lion froze, it an the entire hill lost color until it was entirely white, with the key laying below it.

The entire fight only lasted a minute, but so much happened it felt longer. "That went well." I fell to my knees, now with the fight over I felt the chunk of missing flesh in my leg. With the energy cycling through me from the fight I was able to power through and stopped the bleeding, beginning the healing process. It was stop and go as it was more painful to heal myself then for Violet to heal me. I could see the same chunk of flesh missing from Rowan as he limped forward grabbing the key.

When I was able to walk I regrouped with my team with Violet healing us. Thats when I noticed the leg Violet was healing. I looked down at my now patched up leg and back. It had torn the exact same chunks of flesh from all of us...in the same spot. I felt a chill down my spine. 'Was it even trying?'

After a few minutes Violet finished healing us all when she fell joining us laying on the ground.

I was trying to recover on the ground when I asked. "So we have to do that 4 more times?"

"5." I heard Rowan say.

"What?"

Rowan held up the large black key. It took me a moment to see anything wrong with it, but when I did I let our a groan. The key was melting.

"When did it start...melting and how long has it been?" Bay sat up looking over at the key.

"Started melting about a minute or 2 after we passed the trial. But in total I think about 4 or 5 minutes. It's starting to melt faster." Rowan answered

"So we only got 6-10 minutes to beat all of them." Violet asked

"I think so." Rowan answered until something dawned on him. "Oh. Come on!"

Suddenly Violet shot up with a scared look. "What is it?"

"What happens when the key is gone?" Rowan asked.

"Lion probably starts moving again." Violet said, now calm after her initial scare.

"..." I laid there just breathing when it hit me, and I scrambled to my feet. "Everyone off the hill! Looking around I could to see my warning wasn't needed as everyone was already scrambling to there feet and moving down the hill. It wasn't long after reaching the bottom of the hill before the hill regain its color and the lion finished its lunge. Landing right where bay and Violet had been healing. It looked down at all of us, waiting.

"Do we have time to take each out one by one." I asked while trying to think of my own plan.

Bay stood contemplating something when she spoke. "If we do it will be just barely, and that is assuming we don't have to heal between fights and we run to the next hill."

"...Well...We only need to survive for...I think it was a minute?" Rowan asked.

I turned to the team and said. "I believe Rowan's right. Do you guys think you could survive for a minute against those things?"

"On our own?" Violet said nervously.

"If we split up. I'm not sure we'll make it in time. It will take at least a minute to go between hills. Assuming we split 2 and 2 it would probably take a minimum of 3 minutes for the lions and 2 for running between hills. Leaving us barely any time to get to the door and lock." Bay said listing off all the things we would need to do.

"So we are going to have to face them on our own...aren't we?" I asked hoping for a different answer.

"Looks like it." Bay answered.

I had to ask the obvious question. "Can everyone do that?"

"..."

"..."

"..."

Bay let out a big sigh. "We're going to have to. Everyone rest up and get ready."

We all sat and recovered until I realized we were just putting off the confrontation. I stood asking "Is everyone ready?" I could see the concern in there faces as they all stood. "Ok. We'll leave to black one last, since we know what to expect. So when you succeeded go there. Now pick a hill and go." I was trying to be optimistic.

With that everyone split and started to move to different hills.

I made my way to the White lion. I swear it called us cowards for walking around the hill earlier. There is nothing wrong with planning ahead, but that was a challenge if I ever heard one.

I looked up at the Lion, I swear it was looking down on me. I began to cycle my internal mana faster and faster getting ready for the fight coming. I practically ran up the hill.

The lion lunged forward. I attempt to dodge out of the way, but the lion twisted impossibly taring out a part of my left arm. 'How did he do that?' I had deadened my nerves in order to not feel the missing piece of my arm.

The bleeding stopped almost immediately scaring over leaving a large divot in my arm. I cycled the energy faster, my senses heightened, and my movement smoother. I struck back with an empowered kick, knocking the guardian back sliding across the dirt. It looked me in the eyes...Smiling.

It turned and attacked, its forepaws visibly growing 3 times there original size. Not expecting anything like that I had no time to dodge and was swatted away, landing grinding in the dirt, snapping the rest of my arm, and a couple of my ribs. I scrambled...more like hobbled to my feet expecting a follow up but none ever came. When I looked to over I saw the lion moving toward me but its back legs had shrunk in proportion to its arms. It was changing back but slowly.

A chance. I cycled faster and faster until I could barely focus on what I was going to do. 'This is going to hurt.' "Let's Dance." Immediately I felt the mana in my body react, as music began to play in a quick staccato rhythm. When the lion was just about to strike I moved, jerking left and right in a unpredictable pattern, popping and locking away from his strikes. Each movement fueled by a buildup of tension and release. I was able to avoid every strike, but not without cost. Every move at like that would pull and tare my muscles, and I would have to endure the pain as I constantly healed while cycling. I was sure I was healing wrong to, but there was nothing to be done at the moment. I need to endure until time is up. Then I can get at least back into fighting shape going to the black lion.

'I wonder how the others are doing?' At that thought I lost focus on the music and was talked to the ground.

I was trapped, the lion was to heavy for me to move in that position even with my enhanced strength.I pushed and I pulled moving my head out of the lions mouth. Just trying to survive when I felt something...Wrong. My body started to feel like it did whenever Violet was healing me. Burning and painful, but the difference was it wasn't anywhere I was injured. I felt a burning heat in my chest, with growing pressure. It had just begun when *Clink* time was up. The weight wasn't there anymore, and everything lost color. I could move. The lion was frozen above me but it was now intangible as I moved right through it.

The healing had stopped, my chest was burning, and my muscles felt stretched, but I had to move. I grabbed the key and hobbled my way to the black lion to finish the fight.

Bay

Hmm...What are they trying to accomplish with these rooms. They all have been tough, but... almost tailor suited to our team. Our entire team. How much easier would it have been if we just waited for Aster? Don't dwell on that. It has passed and there nothing to do about it at this point. Focus on the now. I kept walking toward the Yellow lions hill. It was one of the farthest away from the black Lion.

I looked up a the guardian thinking on what I knew. It's a Giant Lion, it has special abilities, it probably has different abilities then the black one. Thats all I know, so prepare for the worst. In preparation I opened all of my mana channels. I could feel all the mana around me stop and pull into me.

I looked up at the lion, I had reached the hill was slowly making my way up. The guardian was looking down, standing proudly waiting for his challenger.

Every step forward I filled more and more with energy, expanding further and further preparing for this fight. Once I was with striking distance the guardian let out a loud roar, and stood waiting. 'I think it's waiting for me to make the first move. Well who am I to say no to an opportunity like this.'

I began my spell.

"Earth" My energy connected to the ground beneath my feet.

"Surrounds" The energy expanded surrounding the guardian.

"Sharp and Broken" The mana began to shape sharp and jagged earth. The pressure building more and more until.

"Bursts" Like a bullet massive spike of earth shot forth from the ground all around the guardian looking to impale.

The lion moved smoothly flowing through each spike, sliding inches away from the bursting earth. It danced through without a scratch, making his way towards me.

Seeing the spikes weren't even slowing it down I cut the flow of mana to the spell. Shutting my channels fully preparing whats left.

The lion spun out of the gather spikes swiping a claw in a long ark towards my body. There was only one way for me to dodge. With my closed channels I was able to channel mana into the word instead of the world as I normally do. I began to jump as I spoke focusing on my destination. "MOVE!" I jumped over the claw moving into the reach of the lion just where it wouldn't be able to reach. Its claws moved and tried to catch me but I was out of reach as its momentum carried it farther away from me.

I felt drained from the expenditure of mana as I always did when using my words. Although powerful they took a lot to use, so before I even hit the ground I opened up fully once more and to use one more spell while the lion was off balance.

"Wind, Wall, Expand, Expel." My energy converted into a wall of wind that expanded toward the guardian then Expelled a burst knocking if back once more buying me some time to gather more mana from the air.

It wasn't enough. The lion recovered much faster then I thought, it appeared to grow bigger right before it lunged at me. "Damn Cats." I wasn't ready and knew if I just dodged again I would waste energy and would be in an even worse position. So I braced myself to attempt to dodge normally. 'This is going to hurt.' A claw came swinging at me, I jumped in the direction of the swing, slightly negating the damage but it was still enough to send me flying away, rolling far down the hill.

The guardian didn't let up. Once it saw where I was it jumped leaping high into the air, but I was finally ready. Once it reached the apex of its jump I release my spell.

"Water,Streak, Encapsulate, and Torrent" A large torrent of water encapsulated the lion, flowing hard into the hill dragging the guardian with it. The lion was slowly getting up now drenched. I cut off all my channels and focused the heat inside the water. "MOVE AWAY!" The lion suddenly froze ice locking his body in place as a giant fireball appeared 20 feet away for an instant. Then to nothing. I opened my mana channels one more time reading myself for my last move. At this point it was a race as the lion was starting to break free. The guardian was starting to move when I felt ready cutting stopping the channels.

I spoke. "It is my Victory." The guardian stopped struggling and gave a slight nod of its head.*Clink* The key fell to the ground and the hill began to turn white. I grabbed the key and looked around. It looks like the others are still fighting. Good it gives me time to charge and recover on the way to the hill.

Violet

Why are we even doing this? *Sigh* I know why its the only way out, but why the fuck did we ever go along with that shady ass mayors plan. Oh just follow this quest, your the healer, the heart, the scales...what the blight is wrong with us? This isn't a story book. This is real life and...and...I just want to go home. I felt tears start to form, I cut that shit out real quick. I looked toward my target. The brown maned lion stood up on the hill staring down at me with what looked like pity in it's eyes. Which just pissed me off.

The Guardian opened its mouth but I reached out my mana gripping onto its own mana field. And spoke "Silence! Understand my words! Do not pity me! Now fight!" Why did I do that?

The guardians eyes turned to anger, the lion tore its own arm.

'WhyAAAHhhhhh!!!!!" Suddenly my own arm felt like it was being ripped apart and burning. I looked down expecting to see most of my arm missing, only to find my arm whole and complete. 'Mother Fucker!'There wasn't anything to heal so I felt nothing but pain. "Oh you fucked up." But when I looked up the Guardian was gone. "Shit" I tried to dive out of the way, only to find my feet tied to the ground by...grass? I fell flat on my face one foot taring free. I felt a blast of wind from above me, looking back I could see the lion behind where I just was. The fall had saved me from a mauling. 'You screwed up.' I was now close enough to reach out and grab the lions leg. Encircling it with my energy and ripping it to the side, causing the lion to fall.

Taking this opportunity I began to move all the mass in my body to my arms causing them to grow and stretch while the rest of my body shrank becoming emaciated. I gripped my arms around the guardian's neck.

The guardian realized something was wrong as it desperately began to roll around trying to get me off. I held on for dear life the small area of my body saving me from most damage. I took my chance and reached in deep into the lions body with my mana and surrounded its heart. The guardian became more and more frantic as I was forcing my energy around its heart. Thats when I saw the claws reaching desperately for me I extended a barrier straight ahead of the paw that connected deep into the lions heart. When the paw struck the barrier shattered the lion falling to the ground motionless.

Feeling the lion unconscious or dead. I wasn't sure with the magical construct I let go laying on the ground half dead, trying to move the mass of my body back to normal. It hurt more then I ever could have imagined, but I needed to finish in order to even move.

*Clink* I started to feel human again when the key fell, and the hill turned white. I stood and slowly moved grabbing the key.

"Let's get this shit over with."

Rowan

The world felt so cold and quiet. I could only feel the emotions of my friends far off in the distance and each of them was a cloud of confusion, nerves, anger, fear and exhaustion. I had grown used to my time in the city with all the flavors of emotions all around. Here though...here was quiet, here I began to remember being alone with my thoughts. Alone with my emotions...I don;t think I like it. The closer I got to the lion the stronger and more distinct its emotions. Sadness and acceptance. It was not something I expected and confused me as I looked up a the large purple lion. Once I reached around 30 feet, there was a sudden change to determination which was the only warning I got as a rain of Ice needles flew toward me.

I felt each needles cold path and traced there destination, as I began to move. It was to many to fully dodge, but I needed to move just enough...THERE! "Surprise Attack." I vanished from the spot in-front of the guardian to the side and slammed into the guardians side. Knocking it slightly off balance.

I reached out deep into the earth and found a tree root behind it and had it burst out of the ground to wrap around the guardians leg. It tried to lunge at me but found it's leg yanking it to the ground. I felt the sudden shock and surprise that a little creature like me could stop it. It was its next emotion that made me worried, anticipation.

Not liking that emotion I rushed toward the guardian preparing for whatever it was going to through at me. I didn't expect that I would suddenly freeze mid run, unable to move a muscle. I couldn't even speak to use a word, and forget controlling my mana. The lion stared me down as I struggled to get free. It stood patiently, contemplating something when suddenly I could move.

Something was coming and the emotion was only something I could describe as preparing for an attack. I ran "Run,Run,Run,Run" I built up speed and momentum of a medium size car hitting full force into the guardian, causing it to fly to the end of the hill. The second it landed large spikes of earth shot out striking me in the chest lifting me off the ground. The pain was intense. It wasn't the whole in my chest causing the worst of the pain, it was being held in the air by said hole.

*Clink* I was attempting to extricate myself when the sound of the key falling hit my ears. The world turned white and the earth holding me up turned intangible. I fell to the earth, blood flowing freely from the hole in my chest.

I reached out to the world grabbing all the energy I could and pulled it into my chest. The bleeding stopped and scar tissue formed over the whole. My insides still burned but it was fading to the back of my mind, as the tightness of the scar tissue tore with every movement, causing me to constantly heal the wound. 'I really hope Violet can fix this.'

I grabbed the key feeling sadness from all the defeated guardian's. But the sadness was not from being defeated. "Why does everything here feel so sad for us?"

Unknown

I sat in a dim room watching 8 crystal monitors showing me the fight of our latest batch of hero's.

"Not bad. A little loose here and there, but surprising figuring out these rooms quick." Monitor switches to a close up of the fight focusing on James. "Can't believe you ended up being the hero." The fight ended after the minute was up. The fact that they all showed up at different time helped as the lion was always switching to the new targets, not knowing who to attack. In the end the fight ended with no one gaining any more wounds.

"The got lucky on that last one. But since they did fight it before...Oh well. Whoever there 5th party member is, has a very interesting set of skills." I leaned back to observe as they made there way to the wall to insert the keys. Violet healing the party on the way, jumping from one person to the other.

"There getting close. I wonder how they will do on the next room."

James

We reached the door, with violet jumping around trying to bring us back to health, with mixed results. Any bleeding has been stopped but she is going to have to do a full session with me. My muscles had been stretched and torn past the limit and apparently that lion grew a tumor in my chest. "How the fuck did it do that?"

"It healed you. Then kept regenerating your cells, thats essentially what a tumor is."

I looked at her slack jawed. "Can you do that?"

She scoffed. "Of course. Any healer can."

I wanted to ask more but there was no time as I looked at my first key. It started to melt. "Move!"

We all rushed to the door and shoved all the keys in turning the locks. The door began to open slowly. Looking at the keys I could see them still melting. "Get under the door!" Everyone moved and ducked under the door I stood at the door making sure that if it fell I could hold it. Then the last of the group went through the door.

I took one last look at the egg before moving through the door.
