Chapter 36: Ethics

McGyvor, visibly shaken, addressed Heater, "We have a problem."

"We have a sentient animal; it doesn't exist in the world," he continued. "On ethics, he is the contradiction of all definitions."

"Our society has nuclear plants, science and technology, but in laws, we are as primitive as apes," McGyvor said with a deep sigh. "The Nonhuman Rights Project is currently fighting to give skilled chimpanzees, who have self-knowledge, cultural heritage passed down through 225 generations, and emotional depth, access to habeas corpus, a legal transmutation of their status from property to person."

Heater was astonished. "You're incredibly well-informed."

"I think he's smarter for that than chess," McGyvor replied, with a hint of admiration.

"In any case," McGyvor continued, "for the Wyrm, what is the compatibility with humans in terms of DNA? Can you breed with humans? This might improve your chances. DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT WE ARE SPEAKING ABOUT? DRAGON?"

The dragon showed its palm and moved its clawed finger as if to write.

"WHAT? YOU CAN WRITE?"

Heater quickly brought a pot of paint and an A2 desk paper note, placing it in front of the dragon.

On the paper, the dragon wrote: E=mc²

"MY NAME IS NOT DRAGON, BUT DAATRHH or YVAN."

"HELP ME PLEASE. I'LL DO EVERYTHING YOU WANT, BUT I NEED A PLACE TO LIVE. THANKS FOR THE FOOD. THANKS FOR YOUR KINDNESS. I AM BORED TO DEATH HERE. LET ME WORK TO REPAY YOU."

Heater and McGyvor were moved to tears, and they embraced the dragon.

"KEEP THIS SECRET FROM SARGE. HE IS BETRAYING YOU."

"DON'T HARM THE WOLVES; THEY ARE FAMILY TO ME."

McGyvor questioned, "WHAT ARE YOU? WHO ARE YOU? ARE YOU AN ALIEN?"

The dragon replied, "I AM WYRM, THE LAST DRAGON ON EARTH 36,000 years ago. I am a fragment of a human soul."

"YES, I AM A WILD ANIMAL, BUT DRAGONS NEVER CONSIDERED THEMSELVES ANIMALS. THEY WERE PROUD, SENTIENT, INTELLIGENT, IRASCIBLE, and they loved gold and treasure, which led to their extinction."

McGyvor asked, "Do you like gold? What do you like? You seem to know science."

The dragon answered, "I was a top researcher before I 'fused' with the dragon. He gained consciousness, and I gained a body. I love all metals; they are tasty. I like money, like everyone. Sometimes, I crave ice cream, beer, and some alcohol. I cannot imagine myself drunk. Haha."

The dragon continued, "Please help me. I would like a Lair and to start a new life. Please protect me from humans. I would also like to pray."

McGyvor was stunned. "Pray?"

The dragon exclaimed, "YES, I pray to God. I have to thank Him too because being a dragon has its good points, and I am happy to be a Dragon. In the morning, I want to sing like the birds. I want to dance when I see the sun. I want to sing when I see the moon. I want to ROAAR in the sky. I want to touch the sky, to reach the stars. To love and be loved."

McGyvor tried to comprehend this revelation. "You are alone; it's impossible for you to love and make a family, as you are the last one."

The dragon countered, "No, you are wrong. I'm pregnant. It's why I surrendered easily. I am half my adult size now, and this place is too small. As the last of my species, I can restart the dragon lineage. This is why I need your help. I have both genders, and I can have descendants with a human wife. The dragon form will become dominant at puberty. By ingesting a living body, I 'vore' him or her, and my egg will give birth to an original pure-blood dragon. There is another cruel way, mutation, by injecting my blood and poison mutagen with my fangs. It has a low success rate and is incredibly painful. It's more of a weapon and unnatural, unethical. Please, don't try to use my blood or saliva. As a scientist, it will not work without a soul trigger, which you call Ki or Chi. Without the trigger, it will be blood poisoning, similar to rattlesnake venom. I'll allow you to take some saliva and blood samples if you place the syringe in my open mouth, where it's softer."

McGyvor made a decision. "Okay, you will remain an animal, and I am your legal owner now. We'll address the rest later. If you are an endangered species, we can help you. If you are human or human-like, we cannot do anything for you, and it will be the responsibility of a tribunal, which could lead to your death or euthanasia."

The dragon replied, "I can defend myself, but I hate to kill."

"Alright, you are under our protection. We will try to create a Lair for you in a reserve where you can live and breed. We will arrange for more freedom for you tomorrow, but don't forget that I am responsible for you as your owner."
