30: A busy afternoon

After spending time in the library, they found a lot of stuff, but only some was useful. Other people were flooding in as they got the same idea themselves. After an hour fights were already breaking out over books.

As they watched one super strong berserker who sought to be a Deity of war got tripped up and went face first into a book case, angering the books. The berserker started to bleed a bit. It was just a cut, but the books were angry and now had the scent of blood. The berserker did not manage to escape. He did, however, manage to grab the centaur that tripped him and pulled him into the kill zone. Neither made it out.

Everyone avoided that section for a while.

As they looked among the shelves they came across some small study tables. At one was a pile of clothing and equipment next to a very smug seeming book that was chained in place. They made sure not to touch it.

Someone tried to steal from the clothing and the book was using it as bait for more victims. They managed to spot that, and they actually spotted it growing thicker!

They made sure to spread the word about that trick.

They quickly left before the place became a battleground!

They headed to Drenak’s mote to practice. They even managed to combine practicing. Harlen practiced her flame Manipulation by using it guide the flames around Garion’s topless body as he endured the heat and Jane observed, trying to learn more. After a while she used flames hot enough that most people would pass out, but Garion focused and stayed awake.

Jane told him “Focus on how it feels! Think about the difference to your body!”

Then Harlen drew the flames away, and Garion was splashed with cold water.

That stunned him greatly, and only due to Limit Breaker he did not pass out from shock!

He managed to remain standing, despite feeling weak and dizzy.

Then they had him lie down and let the power wear off. Once he did so, the shock to his system and dehydration caused by the heat hit him hard! He even passed out for a bit, but they took care of him. By the time dinner came back around, he was mostly recovered

They just had time to return to their own motes, shower and get changed before going to dinner.

Once at the tables, everyone was softly murmuring. There were places for Felinia and Gallen!

Those two came forth and looked over the crowd a bit sadly.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

Felinia told them “Some of you may notice a few others are missing. Eight students died today in the library. The books got them all. They were given the opening by carelessness and students fighting.”

There were gasps at that as people could not believe it.

When the noise settled down, Felinia told them “As for the matter of the Psychopomps, they will need special lessons for their duties, and lack the free time most of you can use. Do you have any questions regarding them?”

One teen girl called out and said “I am interested in being a Goddess of Reincarnation. Would I be able to be one, finding souls and bring them to a world to reincarnate for reasons?”

Felinia calmly told her “That is one way to go through the buildup of souls we have started to get. Not as fast as it could be, but it can work.”

Jane got an idea and called out “Can you have a world where everyone is a reincarnation, and only get their original memories latter on in life?”

Felinia paused and thought about it. “Hmm. That is an interesting idea. It can work.”

Gallen added “Reincarnation would be a very important role. Your job would be to ensure they can’t remember their pasts too early, and you may be able to guide souls to races they may enjoy being, or are more suited for them. For example, putting the soul of someone with a phobia of spiders into a Drider would be a bad idea. Expressly if they died because of spiders. This would really help sorts out the souls in storage.

Felinia looked around and said “If anyone else wishes to join Drenak in this role, come see me, the sooner the better. We will need some time to set up and handle the logistics to handle this.

“Any questions?”

Someone raised a . . . what was that appendage? Anyway, someone raised what passed as a limb for them and asked “What exactly will be able to bring back, and what are the rules?”

Felinia smiled. “Smart question. You can bring the faithless who died that willingly come.”

“So . . . . If I wanted to bring back a lich with an army of undead, it would be allowed?”

Felinia smiled. “Ah, loopholes. I am not saying you can’t do that. What I will say is that as it is a matter of free will, mindless creatures like many corporeal undead can’t make it. Furthermore, the astral place is only for undead spirits. Physical ones would end up in the world I’ve made. There is another issue: If an undead seeks to attend this school and they fit the requirements, you can bring them here via the world. Their followers can follow them through to the world.”

Someone else called out “What if the followers are alive?”

Gallen told them “Don’t be silly; Never publicly ask a question you may not want the answer to.”

Someone called out slowly “If it just requires they have died, I will choose to interpret it to include resurrected people, unless instructed by the staff otherwise.”

Felinia and Gallen smiled. Some had started to learn how to address matters and questions properly. Why ask for official clarification when official ignorance can be so useful?

Someone called out “If we are not allowed to mess with followers of other Deities without their permission, then I am presuming that if the local Deities give us, as Quasi-Deities and not actual Deities when we arrive, permission to gather their followers souls for them, then it would be allowed.”

Felinia replied “I did not say that.”

Gallen added “We can neither confirm nor deny what may occur in other areas away from this multiverse! We are not allowed to even speculate on things that you may do there. If we did so, then it would mean us getting involved in the politics there, and that is forbidden! Any deals that Quasi-Deities and local Deities make in those worlds are not an issue for us if it does not involve us.”

There were knowing smiles. Gallen just confirmed it could be done, but they could not get involved.

Many would came to apply for the job, and many would be refused due to their Domains. Then came the matter of defending souls, and even more dropped out.

Of all those who applied, among the many thousands of students in that course, less than a dozen were considered currently acceptable for the training for job. Flunking out from that side course was still possible.

People had a lot to think of when going back to bed that night.
