27: Job offer

Dinner was going well, and everyone was surprised when Felinia and Gallen both turned up. That alone was enough to ensure no-one left early.

Before dinner Felinia tapped a glass to get everyone’s attention.

When all focus was on her, she told them in a serious voice “I have an offer to make for anyone getting the relevant Domains for it.

“I created this place for many reasons. One was to train potential Deities, another was to lessen the damage such attempts make, and among the many others was because I was curious. However, there is another very important reason. My primary Domain is Outcasts. Those who are denied afterlives for various reasons fall within my Domain. One of the reasons I made this entire system was to help such souls find a place to call home.

“What I am doing is bring in those who did not find other Powers and who would have died for you to convert and take to your Residences when they die. The town, and the world you will be recruiting from will not have souls made for the babies born there, but be reincarnations of souls none others claimed from outside of this system. When the starting deities of a world make it and go there, they will be able to create the races for that world, and the souls have to come from somewhere, in addition to your followers ho move there with you. This is where they will come from.

“They can be brought into the system other ways, like becoming nature spirits and other things.”

Throughout all of the crowd, not a single student was expecting this, not even Drenak and Shade! Only Gallen and Felinia were not surprised.

Felinia told them “You can guess this will take many, many souls. You would be right if you did so. Even more than I have managed to gather here. So far only Gallen and I have been available to recruit them, while doing our other duties. Considering we normally have to focus on large scale events, this leaves many souls left to suffer.

“Souls without afterlives and protectors can face fates far worse than death, or even true death.”

Taking a breath as to steady herself she made the offer “I am making a job offer for all those with the appropriate Domains to act on behalf of this system by finding and guiding willing souls here. There are conditions. They must not follow another power, unless that Power forsakes them. If so then have relinquished all claim over them. The souls must be willing. None must have claim over them. You do not interfere with the politics of that world. You are neutral. By that I mean you escort the good, evil, orderly, chaotic, neutrals, crazy, and even corporate lawyers if they turn out to have souls. If there are lots of applicants, I would be sending you to different worlds to avoid you clashing with each other. You are expected to turn up for classes and to learn everything. You will still be bound by the same rules of the Estelen even when dealing with Power from other worlds. This is because I do not want a fight with them!

“Any questions?”

Someone called out “What payment are we offered? What Domains are appropriate? And what are the actual limits to what we can do?”

Felinia smiled at that last bit before getting down to business.

“You will be acting as a quasi-deity in those worlds when you start there. However, if you get a following, they will still empower you. Basically you get access to a wider range of potential converts. If some of the dead happened to die while hiding treasure? I never said you had to leave it behind.”

There was a fair bit of chuckling and interest there.

“The appropriate Domains are Psychopomps, those are the ones assigned to escorting the dead to their afterlives normally, and is part of the Grave Domain. Also are Reapers as a side part of their Death Domain. Undeath may just touch on it a bit if used properly and carefully. Travelers may have this as a sub-domain as this is travel from one world to another. Messengers not so much. Other Domains may work, if applicable. Another way of saying is; if you can think of a justification, you can do it.”

People were surprised at the range people could come from.

Smiling she added “For what you can do, the answer is simple; if you can manage it and justify it without causing problems, I don’t really care. Cause problems by stirring up problems for me, and you will learn of fates worse than death as I use you as an example in ways that even those who seek to be Deities of Suffering, Pain, and Torment will be shocked by. Trust me; I have a minor Truth Domain: I can’t lie.”

One guy seemed nervous and asked “What are some things we should avoid?”

“Helping people finish their final business is ok, as is minor revenge. Helping someone get revenge on a religion because they were killed by a zealot from it? No! Doing so to a secular politician? Just be very careful and able to justify it. Destroying the entire government because a minor bureaucrat cut off their pension causing them to become homeless and killed by a gang? No way! Kill an innocent for a crime their great great grandfather covered up to avoid being killed by the criminals? No! Kill the child of a killer? No. Let the murder victim expose their killer, or possibly even get suitable revenge? Do it right and I will probably let it slide. Help a necromancer raise undead to defend a place the souls feel duty bound to protect because they failed in life? Go ahead. Do it yourself if you like, and can justify it without causing me problems.”

Shock was in many faces.

When things settled down a bit, dinner was lively, and Drenak took the chance.

He stood up from his table, and walk over to Felinia.

Bowing slightly. “My lady, I avoided getting followers before and only came here because my father compelled me to. I sort to avoid the politics that often come with followers. I can’t in good conscious leave behind those who also sort to avoid the turmoil of religious politics and feuds , if it will mean they shall suffer as you have said they would. I wish to accept your offer, and shall seek to make that the focus of my Domain.”

Felinia smiled at him. She recognized the showmanship.

“Then I will be glad to accept you in this role. It will take some time for me to sort out the logistics needed for this, but they shall be sorted.”

Drenak smiled “Thank you, boss.” With that he returned to his seat.

People had no idea how to respond to that, but the fact someone accepted so quickly got many thinking!

It would be an interesting night for after dinner conversation.
