“What the fuck do you want from me?”
“…”
“Seriously?”
“…”
“It figures that the God of Death can’t speak… can you at least write something down? Maybe send a text? For fucks sake, at least have some kind of telepathy…”
“…”
The shadowy figure wearing a black cloak, covered in mist and holding a giant black scythe with runes all over the blade was apparently Matallost. Azrael knew enough about the back story of Royal Road to recognize the three main religious figures. Freya was the God of beauty, abundance and probably some other important stuff, no one really knew what she looked like exactly. Belacus was the God of fighters, so probably sort of like a god of war, but maybe a not? Most people didn't even know about Matallost though, since no one seemed to even know where it’s churches were, not quite sure if it has a gender or not but it’s most likely a typical Grim Reaper type. However, he had no idea why this wannabe God and that generic God-like antagonist were fighting over him? Most likely something about Freya, but of course he got stuck with the one who doesn't speak.
‘At least the other one would probably explain the situation before he tried to steal my soul or some such shit.’
They were floating on top of a cloud above a land that looked like a sewer in hell… just an endless river of souls and black muck surrounded by wastelands on each side. The reaper pulled two gigantic white, shiny fishing rods out of the hole where its face was supposed to be and handed one of them to Azrael. He just cast the line down into the sewage without even using bait and waited a few minutes. It seemed like something was tugging on the line when he quickly yanked it up, pulling along a soul. It was a sobbing little boy who was wearing ragged clothing holding onto the massive hook with both hands. Matallost leaned over and whispered something to the boy that was impossible to hear from even a few meters away and the child’s astral body began to change from a dark green tint, to a shimmering bright blue. After that, he quickly dropped the boy down a bit and then launched him up into the distorted sky that was a disgusting grayish color. However, after a certain height the boy’s ghostly figure exploded in a brilliant flash of blue light. It was impossible but it almost looked like the shadowy figure was actually smiling as he stared at the afterglow for a few moments, then continued to fish.
“Sigh, I guess it was about time for me to learn a new skill…”
However, even after a few hours there was no bite on his line, even as the thing next to him was catching one every few minutes. That’s when he realized what was wrong, he already had 10 skills and he hadn't decided on a class yet. He was definitely irritated but then a window popped appeared in front of him.

When the people of the Versailles Continent die, their bodies are destroyed and their souls or personalities are left behind. Sometimes they simply linger on in the world of the living, but usually they fall down into the Wailing River where they struggle to retain their memories and experience until they can receive a new body. However, even though Matallost has dramatically altered the passage of time, he is still alone in his quest to recycle the endless stream of disembodied personalities to be reborn all over the continent. He has requested your help fishing out the souls and using the Voice of Death to give them new names and sending them to their new bodies.

A concept that is foreign to the Versailles Continent, an envoy or messenger of the Gods! Until now the Versailles Continent had a predictable ebb and flow that was carefully regulated by the most powerful beings that had existed since the beginning of time. However, once the Freedmen appeared, the balance was destroyed. Coming from another world to this one, you are considered a mysterious and powerful entity that could bring salvation or damnation to Versailles.

Azrael was a Jack of all trades type of person in the first place so if he wasn't forced into a situation like this, he probably would have ended up reaching level 100 without even being able to decide on a class. Although not being able to invest points where you want, or need, seems pretty bad, the amount of total stat points he would receive per level increased every time he gained a new stat. There was also another factor to consider, stat points could be raised in many different ways and if a person was willing to mindlessly grind out skills, they would be able to painstakingly increase the specific stats that they needed.
After a few hours went by there was finally a bite on the line, but there was problem. Matallost made it look so easy, but apparently souls are actually pretty heavy. It took him over an hour of struggling to reel the mass of ectoplasm up to where he could even see it but the moment the purple spirit came into view, it leg go and fell back down into the river. A total of six hours was wasted because he didn't have enough strength, but that wasn't even the worst part. The number of souls in the quest requirements was increasing by about 1 every 6 hours, although it wasn't really 6 hours. Time was being warped within the section of the river they were hovering above, he could only guess by looking at how slow the river was moving outside compared to inside, but it seemed like the ratio was 5 hours inside was only a second outside.
It might seem impossible to be able to think 72,000 times faster than normal, but it really isn’t. A typical person will spend 20 minutes at a time in REM sleep, which is the state where one dreams. It was common for Michael to have lucid dreams where he could experience thousands of years but usually the memories would fade quickly. The trick was know how to forget, rather than being able to remember. There are always limits, but they’re usually much higher than you can possibly imagine.

After a day of struggling in vain, he finally caught one! No wonder it seemed so difficult to catch anything! Matallost was constantly catching humans, elves and dwarves, but there were actually souls of every size, shape and race within the pitch black river. While struggling to hold the minotaur steady he said “Hurry up and tell me your story, if you lie then you’re going back down.” in an irritated voice.
The spirits body was in the shape of a huge blood red human male with a cows head, it yelled “Moooo! Mooo! Moooo!” in a very angry voice, apparently it had the language skills of a cow.
Azrael sighed and yelled “Female, Dark elf, Talia!” in a deafening voice and then his strength surged as he channeled all of his mana into his spectral muscles. After dropping the minotaur down a few meters he launched it up into the sky, just barely managing to make it high enough to explode into a beautiful red flash.

“So that’s the secret…”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Why the hell do these things keep happening to him?”
“Maybe there’s something wrong with his brain?”
“We went through his medical records and found nothing!”
“There must be some error involving the Creativity stat…”
“He isn't the first person in Royal Road to receive it though, there are at least 15,000 others and none of them have been able to manipulate it like he does.”
“We though it would be a fun aspect to allow users to create their own unique skills but it was never meant to affect the game in such a dramatic way.”
“It’s almost as if Versailles is using his thoughts to create more content…”
“It‘s hard to notice but every sixty seconds he enters REM sleep for 1 second and within that moment, a thousand years of detailed history is written and recorded in great detail.”
“At his current speed, it’s simply impossible for him to complete this quest…”
“It’s only been an hour for us but to him it must have seemed like over 10 years!”
“What the hell is So-Ra doing? Tell her to log out and unplug his capsule if that’s what it takes to get him out of there!”
“You know that if she did that he would most likely die! Besides, he doesn't seem to be in any immediate danger…”
“I know, I know! Plus, it would take our concept and development team years to come up with even a fraction of what he creates in a minute…”
What they didn't tell Michael they send him the capsules, was that they would be watching everything he did very carefully. In all the years that they were testing the virtual reality system for Royal Road, they never even considered truly testing its limits. The risk was always far too great and anyone died or was seriously injured during the early stages, the whole project could have been scrapped. However, they did notice that the current temporal ratio was optimal for most users in the beta test. They did 1:1 first, but it just wasn't fast enough, 2:1 was too slow as well and after a few users reported migraines at 6:1 they settled on 4:1 which was perfect.

“God damn it! Freya, what the hell did you do to these people!?”
“Nothing! I just let them try my new potions!”
“By let them try, do you mean you forced them?!”
“Maybe just a little bit?”
Freya and So-Ra were yelling at each other while running as fast as they could from an angry mob of Users and guards through the disgusting alleyways and side streets of Rhodium. It started the moment they escaped from the collapsing Alchemy Guild, without Azrael there to scare them away, the two girls were defenseless. If not for Freya’s demon smog potion, they would have been captured and killed immediately, but even with their head start, they didn't have enough agility to outrun the huge group of medium level users and NPCs. Just when they reached a dead end, two shady looking people covered in black clothing and wearing black masks along with their black cloaks seemed to appear out of thin air in front of them. They quickly grabbed the girls and vanished again only a split second before the mob arrived.
This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.
When they opened their eyes, the two girls were in a place with no light, only the sound of running water underneath their feet and unintelligible yelling above their heads. A man with a deep voice said “Do you two belong to the Alchemy Guild?” that was too quiet to even be a whisper.
Freya said “We are alchemists, but we belong to no one.” in a stern voice.
A high pitched feminine voice whispered “We came to Rhodium in search of an old man who belonged to this cities Alchemy Guild. He was capable of creating special potions…”
So-Ra said “Michael… I mean Azrael did mention something about finding a dead old man in the guild when he got there.” in a quiet voice as she tried to log out again, but she was still in combat.
Their eyes had begun to acclimate to the darkness and the two people became slightly visible. The man and woman were indistinguishable aside from their voices, they were wearing such dark clothes that only their bright green, catlike eyes could be seen. The man said “How high are your alchemy skill levels?” in a slightly louder voice than before.
Freya grinned and said “My alchemy skill is only level 5 but I’m sure I can create the potion you seek. If you can help us escape this city, I will make it for you.” in a voice that sounded extremely suspicious.
So-Ra quickly yelled “She isn't lying! She’s probably the greatest Alchemist in the whole continent!” with a worried look on her face, she still couldn't log out.
The woman sighed and said “Well, we can’t return to the boss empty handed… even though these two seem really suspicious, at least they’re low level so we shouldn't be in too much danger from them.” in an irritated voice. Normally, a person can leave their starting city for 4 weeks in-game but So-Ra was an exception since she had to be able to keep up with Azrael.
After an hour of following the two people who were most likely thieves, which was a class similar to assassins but with more out of combat skills relating to… acquiring items, they finally reached the outside. There was a river that flowed underneath the city, which was used as a fresh water supply. The technology to utilize sewer systems didn't exist in the Versailles continent, in-case you thought that’s where they were. In fact, user avatars didn't actually need to excrete waste in the first place, they were probably afraid that there would be a lot of accidents where the person couldn't tell which body needed to use the bathroom…

“Hey, don’t worry about me, I’m fine, so don’t go tearing me out of the capsule or something idiotic like that. I would probably go into a coma or have an aneurysm and die if you did. I’m currently in a temporal bubble that’s about 18,000 times faster than the normal Royal Road speed, so its probably been a couple years for me. Anyway, I’m almost done this quest so I should be able to meet up with you two soon… although I have no idea where I might end up so don’t wait around Rhodium for me. Be careful, this is not just a game but a different reality, don’t be afraid to kill someone else to preserve your own life and take care of Freya. P.S. don’t pick the alchemy class, you suck at it.”

Dementia is more terrifying than any dragon or demon in Royal Road or even reality. Azrael’s mind was being warped by the constant strain it was being put under. Even though it had only been about 10 or 15 years, every time he tried to rest, he ended up being forced to push his brain into thinking thousands of times faster than it was while he was endlessly fishing. However, just when he was at the breaking point, his struggle had finally ended with his 43,900th soul.
The bald old man looked slightly familiar but without even letting him speak Azrael yelled “Female, Dire Wolf, Donathan!” as he launched the spirit into the air with ease.

“Thank you…”
He heard a quiet whisper in his ear as the wind blew across his face and a cold chill ran down his spine, mainly because the thick leather armor he was wearing had huge holes missing on the front and back. When he opened his eyes he could see the bright blue sky, blotted out by the tops of trees, he was standing in the middle of a forest somewhere. After logging out, it was like he was sleepwalking, fulfilling his basic needs for survival unconsciously, eating, drinking, washing his hands a lot, then returning to the capsule while completely ignoring his parents were trying to talk to him. So-Ra was talking to them about something, but he couldn't comprehend the conversation, his mind was blank for once. Michael was so tired that when he laid down in the capsule to start playing Royal Road, he fell asleep.
“What is it? Chwiiik!”
“Giant human? Chwitchwit!”
“Chwik! It’s waking up!”
“Should we kill it? Chwichwitchwit!”
Azrael opened his eyes and saw two orcs standing over his body. There are many words that can describe the typical orc… ugly, fat, tall, green, piggish, and typically they had small tusks along with ears that were closer to a goblin than an elf. However, there was one quality that stood out among all the others.
“This is just a disguise! Chwiiik!”
“Ah! Chwik! I knew there couldn’t be such a large human! Chwichik!”
“What you named? Chwik.”
“Chiwichwik! Fake human name Azrael, real orc name Michwii!”
Orcs are naive idiots who will believe just about anything you tell them, no matter how outrageous it should sound. Azrael could barely remember anything that happened after he started fishing, however long ago that was. He was just going with the flow for the moment while he figured out what it was he wanted to do in this village full of orcs in the middle of some forest somewhere. He suddenly received a whisper from an old guildie he hadn't spoken to in a long time.
-Sigh, Plague, where are you right now?
-Some orc village? Why what’s wrong?
Nexic was one of the only people who accepted his friend invitation when he started playing Royal Road…
-These crazy bitches are telling me they won’t create potions for me unless I bring you here, or take them to you…
-Oh yea! I completely forgot about them…
-El-Oh-El. I just told them that.
-Hmmm, so where are you guys at?
-Some city called Varhales?
-Yea, it really doesn't matter, I’m not actually going to go there.
-Sigh…
-Give me a second, I’ll tell them to make you drugs, I mean potions…
-Thanks…
It was pretty difficult to calm Freya and So-Ra down, but after a few minutes they finally accepted that I wouldn't be able to meet up with them for a while. Freya offered to use her real body to give me a ride or teleport me but I explained how that would be cheating. So-Ra insisted that she needed to be close to me at all times in-case I got into trouble again, but after I explained that she wouldn't be able to help me if she got stuck in the same situation, she quickly stopped caring.
